Episode 97: Why I Quit27 Aug 202400:30:53

This episode took us almost two months to record. We took a little break, Redacted got the plague (maybe COVID), and now the school year is starting. It’s been a LOT. But we love you and we’re so glad to be back!

We asked you to share why you left teaching, and wow, did you deliver! From burnout to dealing with unsupportive admin, we’re talking about the tough choices we’ve all made to walk away. We’re here to validate your experiences, share some laughs, and maybe even shed a tear or two. Let’s get into it!

Episode 87: What's the Point?18 May 202400:47:43

What’s the point of school? No really, what’s the point? When a student walks across that stage to get their diploma, what should we – as teachers – have imparted to them? Today we’re getting into what we think the most important lessons are. Turns out, it’s more about critical thinking than calculus.

Today we’re reading your submissions about testing. The common denominators are how BORING it is, the absolutely absurd regulations at your schools, and lots and lots of puking for some reason. Let’s get into the highs and (mostly) lows of administering the tests from Uncle Sam.

Episode 81: It's Not Me, It's You03 Apr 202400:53:15

This episode turned out to be an inspo session, which is rare for us. Today, Chanea Bond is here to break down the realities of 'honors' classes. A lot of times, ‘honors' is less about smarts and more about thriving in classrooms without the distraction of behavioral issues. Mrs. Bond lives by the credo 'It's not you, it's the system’ and is here to remind us that sometimes the problem really is the kids – and that's perfectly okay.

Surprise! A lot has happened since our last recorded episode. That’s right, Frazz had her baby! Of course she was literally having contractions while working on the podcast.

This week we’re just shooting the shit. We talk about a few serious topics like school resources and the sisyphean struggle of finding enough Chromebook chargers, but mostly it’s a much-needed decompression session.

Episode 79: Free Your Mind20 Mar 202400:43:49

There can be a lot of reasons you might want to transition out of the classroom. The good thing is that teaching equips you with a lot of transferable skills. Problem solving, project management, group communication, the list goes on and on.

Some jobs out there may require additional degrees and certifications but many actually don’t! We’re used to a very credential-driven system within education but after you leave you’ll find that a lot of positions are much more flexible. Often employers will look at skills and experience before your degree. Remember, your teaching experience is a valuable asset that can open doors beyond the classroom!

Episode 78: Grad School13 Mar 202400:33:35

Grad school isn’t worth it. Unfortunately, both of us are going. Graduate enrollment is on the decline because it's just not being incentivized. We did some “investigative journalism” and found that in most places the pay bump isn’t significant. In our opinion, you should only go if you can make a spreadsheet showing that the money you're investing is worth it. Unless you're rich then go have fun with your passions.

Episode 76: Middle School (Silly, Serious, Scared)28 Feb 202400:49:11

This week’s guest teaches *dun dun dun* middle school! According to WhenNerdsTeach, the key to being a successful jr. high teacher seems to be actually liking and caring about the kids. Who knew! So we’re going to discuss funny bad things instead of depressing bad things! Episode 73: The AI Generation07 Feb 202400:37:07

AI could be compared to the printing press or the internet in how it will probably change society. It’s too late to have the conversation about whether or not kids should be using it - they already are. Instead, let’s turn our attention to literacy, cheating, and how students can use it in a positive way.

Episode 72: School Is/Is Not Childcare31 Jan 202400:36:07

Schools are childcare but teachers aren’t babysitters. When the cost of childcare is out of reach for many Americans, the public education system is what allows parents to show up for work. Schools really do serve a function of society in that way but it's not the main objective. The childcare cliff is imminent and we’ll explain exactly what that means and how it might affect us all.

Episode 68: Brain Rot03 Jan 202400:40:49

Let's dive into the world of phones today where our jokes about brain rot aren’t really jokes. The data shows that kids get better test scores when they aren't glued to their screens, but snatching away their precious devices doesn't go down well – surprise, surprise.

At most schools, it's the teachers crafting phone procedures. Admins, it's time to step up and create school-wide policies. Teachers are drowning in responsibilities; let's not add phone politics to the mix. Tune in for more on this tangled web – no promises on a neat conclusion, but plenty to ponder in your own classroom.

Episode 57: The Spooky Tale of the Missing COVID Funding20 Oct 202300:48:28

Lately there’s been some discussion on TikTok about the “COVID slide.” No, we’re not talking about contracting coronavirus from playground equipment. Today’s episode is about the gaps in education arising in the wake of the pandemic.

COVID didn't cause these issues - for the most part it just exacerbated problems that were already there. Students were bringing the classroom home with them and, for the first time, parents could see from the teacher’s perspective and teachers had a window into their kids’ home life.

Episode 53: The Social Media Fart Clause14 Sep 202300:49:45

We’ve said it before, we’re saying it again: teachers are people too. It’s no longer feasible to ask educators not to be on social media. But without schools providing clear guidance as to what employees can and cannot post, sharing online can be risky - schools might react to teachers’ content, even if it’s unrelated to school or kids.

Today’s guest, FormerlyFatStephen, is currently on leave from his teaching position because of a video that went viral. A system that doesn’t take teachers seriously sure can’t take a joke.

Episode 49: Recess17 Aug 202300:46:52

Recess is a win-win-win. The kids are winning because they're getting their wiggles out and it's good for their brain and body. The teachers are winning because they get more planning time. And then the district is winning because both those things will drive scores. So then why is recess getting shorter and shorter?

Episode 48: Teacher Icks09 Aug 202300:36:19

Welcome back. We're doing something a little different today. Well, it's not a different 'cause we're literally just talking shit, but it's in a little bit of a different format: we're purely talking shit versus having a topic to talk shit about.

So today we're gonna do teacher icks. When we say teacher “icks”, we mean that in whatever your interpretation is. Icks in regards to teacher actions that we think are icky because we don't think they're good for students, icks for things administrators do or say. Here's a list of things we hate. Enjoy!

There are some bananas principals out there and it’s pretty incredible what they can get away with. C’est la vie, I guess that just means we’ll get more letters to read (that was sarcasm).
