Paul writes his letter to the Philippians for a few reasons. First, Paul is concerned that because Paul’s circumstances might be construed as a curse coming from God. Second, it is Paul’s desire that the Philippians continue in their participation in the gospel. Finally, Paul desires that the Philippians be warned about the theology of those of the party of the circumcision who have adopted a sort of “health and wealth” theology. Paul’s words were directly applicable in his day. They are just as applicable today.

John writes this letter in order to both commend a fellow believer named Gaius and to warn him about someone name Diotrephes who rejects the words and teaching of the apostles. Commendation and warning: these are strong and necessary words for all believers.
