Gordon Hayward's Butterfly Effect on the Boston Celtics
dimanche 4 août 2024 • Duration 25:34
Earlier this week, I wrote about Gordon Hayward’s tenure with the Boston Celtics, how his career arch was altered, and the knock-on effect his injury had on the team’s overall development.
In today’s podcast, myself and Tim Shiels take the conversation a couple of steps further. We look at how the Celtics’ future could have been different:
* Would Marcus Smart have developed the same?
* Would Jaylen Brown have been traded?
* Could Tatum and Brown ever emerge past being high-level role players?
* Would Kyrie Irving have stuck around?
* Would Kemba Walker have come to Boston? Or hurt his knee in the All-Star game?
Hayward’s injury created so many variables that it’s fair to put his injury in the top 5 of Boston’s biggest “What Ifs.”
With it being the offseason and Hayward having announced his retirement last week, now felt like the perfect time to take a bit of a deeper dive into his tenure and how differently things could have turned out.

Episode 27: What's wrong with Jayson Tatum's shot?
jeudi 1 août 2024 • Duration 19:22
Jayson Tatum has been struggling when shooting from the perimeter for the past 18 months. He was inconsistent throughout the 2023-24 season, and had issues in the 2022-23 postseason. Tatum was once seen as a pure scoring threat, who could light up any defense from every level of the floor.
However, Tatum’s game has evolved. He’s no longer a pure scorer. Instead, he’s one of the most complete players in the world. He thrives when driving the lane. It is among the most dangerous post-players on the planet. He’s also a high-level pick-and-roll creator — both for himself and others and is an elite help defender.
Nevertheless, it’s always easier to focus on what somebody can’t do or is struggling to do rather than what they excel at.
Tatum is currently with Team USA, playing in front of an international audience. Since joining Steve Kerr's team, he has been 0-for-7 from the perimeter, which has led to a lot of criticism.
That’s why, in today’s episode, Tim Shiels and I discussed Tatum’s shooting struggles before trying to figure out why they’re occurring and whether they even matter when he can do so many other things.

Analyzing how Baylor Scheierman fits with Boston
jeudi 27 juin 2024 • Duration 28:04
The Boston Celtics selected Baylor Scheierman with the 30th pick in the first round of the 2024 NBA Draft. Scheierman is a five-year production out of Creighton. He is a multi-talented wing who enters the NBA as a high-floor, low-ceiling prospect.
Scheierman has proven himself to be a reliable movement shooter, rebounder, and has shown he can attack off the dribble, create space for himself and tee-up his teammates at times.
Boston has drafted for fit, and took the player that makes the most sense for their system and current needs. Scheierman will likely struggle to crack Boston’s rotation, but given his polish and collegiate experience, he will likely jump ahead of Jordan Walsh in the rotation and will consume the role Svi Mykhailiuk played last season. His talent could see him earn a bigger role throughout the season.
In today’s podcast, myself and Tim Sheils discuss Scheierman’s fit with the Celtics, assess how he suits Joe Mazzulla’s brand of basketball. We also touch on the discussion surrounding a potential crossover with Sam Hasuer (spoiler, they should be able to co-exist) and what to expect from Scheierman this season.
You can listen on Spotify (or Apple)
And, of course, if you prefer YouTube, the video is already live!
While we’re here, let me know how you’re feeling about Scheierman joining the Celtics…Is he the guy you wanted? Did Brad Stevens miss on a different prospect? Let me know!

First Blood
vendredi 7 juin 2024 • Duration 31:30
Something a little different today. Usually, the podcast doesn’t replace a newsletter release. That will continue to be the case. However, with the Celtics securing their first win in the NBA Finals, I wanted to share my thoughts so you could hear my tone of voice — and see how happy I am (If you’re watching on YouTube) — hopefully, it comes across!
So, for today, the newsletter is tied to the podcast. You can tune in via any major podcast platform or watch it on YouTube by following the link.
If you’re new to the show, hit the subscribe button. I will have many things coming out, week in and week out.
And if you’re a paying subscriber, we will be completing the 3x3x3 tomorrow, where we look at some of the offensive and defensive principles we touched on this week and how they played out — or didn’t play out during the opening game of the series! The final 3 x 3 x 3 will be available for everyone, so stay tuned!
Shoutout to my guy Tim Sheils for jumping on with me. You will see a lot of Tim moving forward.
