Unlocking the Immune System19 Oct 202500:21:17

Our guest in this new episode is an academic super star: Prof. Carmit Levy who is the Chair of the Department of Human Molecular Genetics & Biochemistry at the Gray Faculty of Medicine. Levy is a renowned researcher in the area of skin cancer.

Prof. Levy and her team recently made a groundbreaking discovery involving a protein called Ly6a, which acts as a “brake” on the immune system. This protein, expressed both after UV exposure and in tumors, prevents immune cells from attacking cancer effectively. In experimental studies, the team showed that blocking Ly6a with a specific antibody reactivated the immune response, causing tumors to shrink—even in cases resistant to existing immunotherapies. This research, published in Nature Communications, not only advances our understanding of the immune system but also points toward entirely new treatment possibilities. Join us as we explore with Prof. Levy how this discovery was made, its future potential, and what it means for the fight against cancer.

In this new episode Prof. Adler-Abramovich is educating us about applications of nano science and materials designed and fabricated in a lab that were inspired by nature (bio-inspired materials). What started as applications for dental sciences, especially with bones, became critically important due to applications across the board from Osteoporosis among the elderly (Osteoporosis is a condition that weakens bones, making them more prone to fractures. It is a common condition, especially in postmenopausal women and older adults), to the regeneration of skin cells.

Prof. Lihi: "In my Laboratory of Bioinspired Materials is focused on mimicking self-assembly processes that occur in nature, including biomineralization and the organization of short peptides and amino acids into ordered nanostructures. We are a material science laboratory with emphasis on organic chemistry and medical-biological applications. The group is developing new organic materials that are used for various applications, such as 3D hydrogels for bone tissue regeneration, which exhibit extraordinary mechanical properties and durability, along with biocompatibility and controlled drug release."

What Can We Learn From the Behavior of Insects?21 Sep 202500:25:11

Prof. Amir Ayali, School of Zoology, Tel Aviv University

In this new Episode we dive into the captivating world of neuroethology and bio-inspired innovation. Our guest is Prof. Amir Ayali, a leading researcher at the Faculty of Life Sciences, who served as head of the Zoology Department from 2011 to 2015. His groundbreaking work reveals how the tiny brains of insects, like locusts and cockroaches, produce complex behaviors—from individual movement to swarm dynamics.

Ayali’s research focuses on the neural and biomechanical mechanisms of locomotion, using insects as models to study motor control, decision-making, and group coordination. He explores how neural systems, such as central pattern generators, integrate with sensory feedback to drive behaviors like walking, flying, and digging. His findings on locust swarms uncover how simple visual cues lead to coordinated group movement, offering insights into both biology and agricultural challenges. Additionally, he investigates insect-environment interactions, including the effects of artificial light and microbiomes on behavior.

A pioneer in interdisciplinary science, Ayali translates biological insights into bio-inspired technologies, from robotic locomotion to novel digging tools. His work bridges neuroscience and engineering, advancing our understanding of adaptive behavior while sparking innovative applications. Published in top journals, his research combines neurophysiology, behavioral assays, and computational modeling to decode the secrets of insect nervous systems.

In the next hour, we’ll explore how locusts inspire cutting-edge robotics, unravel the neural basis of swarming, and question how insect behavior can shape future technologies. We’ll also discuss the impact of environmental factors on insects and their relevance to global challenges.

How to Provide with Food & Energy Security?01 Sep 202500:28:59

Guest: Prof. Iftach Yacoby, The School of Plant Sciences and Food Security, TAU

Our guest in this episode is framer-turned scientist Prof. Iftach Yacoby of the School of Plant Sciences and Food Security at TAU. His mission is to solve both problems at once: Food security and energy security. How is going to achieve this goal? That’s exactly whet this conversation is all about. Fellow researchers from Tel Aviv University explained his idea: To use green algae as tiny solar-powered factories that can produce two things we urgently need: clean hydrogen fuel and protein-rich food. By growing algae with sunlight and water, his team can generate renewable energy while also creating nutritious biomass that can be used as food or feed. This way, the same system helps tackle both climate change and global hunger at once. Hence, micro-algae are a genuine green coin, with one side representing energy security and the other food security.

Now she is trying to reform ultra-Orthodox society from within and believes that a balancing formula can be found within the polemic. "But the mainstream will not mobilize end masse for combat service, it is in contrast to their core belief”. She clarifies: "The ultra-Orthodox DNA is characterized by giving a large place to God in a way that people perceive as irresponsibility. They are not parasites; this is their worldview”.
Dr. Yaffe is featured in our new episode where host Ido Aharoni is asking her about her own personal life, academic research and vision for the integration of the ultra-orthodox community into the general society.

On the Cutting Edge of Cancer Research11 Jun 202500:30:31

Prof. Uri Ben-David, Faculty of Medicine, Tel Aviv University & Department of Human Molecular Genetics and Biochemistry.

Prof. Uri Ben-David is our guest for this episode of TAU Unbound. He is a professor in the Faculty of Medicine at Tel Aviv University and a researcher in the Department of Human Molecular Genetics and Biochemistry. He obtained his doctorate from the Hebrew University and his post-doctoral work at the Broad Institute of Harvard University and MIT.
His work at the "Ben David Lab” at TAU focuses on a unique, understudied trait of cancer. Changes in the chromosomal composition of the cell, also known as aneuploidy, make for a fundamental difference between normal and cancer cells. The lab combines experimental and computational approaches to uncover the basic biology underlying this hallmark of cancer, track its origins and understand its cellular consequences. By doing so, the lab strives to expand our understanding of the genetic basis of cancer, and to make aneuploidy a therapeutic target for precision cancer medicine.
In this episode Aharoni & Ben David cover the main elements of Ben David’s work:
CANCER ANEUPLOIDY Aneuploidy – the presence of an abnormal number of chromosomes in cancer cells — is characteristic of most tumors, and is rarely observed in normal tissues.
EVOLUTION OF CANCER MODELS The study of the complex genetics of human cancer depends on reliable cancer model systems.
STEM CELLS & CANCER Human stem cells share fundamental characteristics with human cancer cells, and thus make for a unique model system for the study of cancer genetics.

The new frontier of neuroscience, diagnosis and drug development11 Jun 202500:32:05

Professor (Emerita) Illana Gozes is the Director of the Elton Laboratory for Molecular Neuroendocrinology at the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences at TAU

Professor (Emerita) Illana Gozes is the Director of the Elton Laboratory for Molecular Neuroendocrinology at the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences at TAU. Here she discusses with host Ido Aharoni her work, in particular, her scientific breakthroughs spanning decades of cutting edge innovative scientific research. In short, Professor Gozes discovered a new protein to science, she named it activity-dependent neuroprotective protein (ADNP). ADNP is essential for brain formation and when mutated it causes the ADNP syndrome, within the autism spectrum disorders. Furthermore, she discovered that it is mutated in Alzheimer’s disease brains paralleling the progression of disease pathology. With ADNP playing such crucial roles, the Gozes research team derived a small brain protective fragment of it and named this fragment NAP (investigational drug davunetide) toward clinical development. Analyzing clinical trial results, she showed that davunetide protects against brain degeneration in women suffering from the intractable disease, progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), sharing core pathology with Alzheimer’s disease. Davunetide is now in clinical development by Exonavis Therapeutics Ltd (where Prof. Gozes serves as Vice President for Drug Development). Amazingly, she never rests on her laurels. One of her other scientific breakthroughs, stemming from her discovery of ADNP linkage with stress conditions (a risk for Alzheimer’s disease), that in turn is paralleled by changes in the body’s bacterial flora have now progressed to studies on trauma. Thus, in combat shock victims, she and her colleagues identified the presence of certain bacteria in saliva paralleling post-trauma among veterans. The findings of this groundbreaking research point to a typical picture of bacteria in saliva that appears in veterans who suffered from combat reactions, and who now suffer from post-trauma. Together, the results of the studies pave the way for patient stratification, understanding nature versus nurture and the development of personalized sex-dependent therapeutics.

Philanthropy in Israel These Days11 Jun 202500:25:07

Adv. Galia Feit who is a social cause lawyer and the executive director of the Law and Philanthropy Center at the Buchman Faculty of LawIdo Aharoni Aronoff is hosting in the new episode Adv. Galia Feit who is a social cause lawyer and the executive director of the Law and Philanthropy Center at the Buchman Faculty of Law at Tel Aviv University. Galia’s encounter with philanthropy and the establishment of a philanthropy research institute is at the center of our conversation.
Contrary to what most people say about the Israelis, that they are not known for their charitable contributions, the response to the atrocities of October 7th indicates otherwise: the philanthropic response to the 7/10 massacre and the Iron Swords War had been overwhelmingly positive - in three circles: (a) Spontaneous reaction of the Israelis - organizations - volunteering and donations, (b) The response of institutionalized philanthropy - strategic donors, philanthropic foundations, Jewish communities abroad, and (c) Philanthropy's response to the outbreak of anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism - perhaps we can talk another time.
In this conversation Aharoni & Feit also touch upon the deficient response of Israel’s government since that which does not work well in times of routine (government infrastructure for social services) cannot possibly work well in an emergency. Yet, Feit is highlighting an extraordinary picture of civil mobilization and social solidarity post 10/7.
