Marla Aaron: Redefining Jewelry with Individuality07 Jul 202300:44:22

In this episode of Tattoos & Torah our host, Rabbi Iggy, will explore the fascinating world of Marla Aaron, a visionary jewelry designer who is redefining the concept of jewelry with her eponymous collection. Launched in 2013, Marla's collection showcases her passion for bridges, hardware, and jewelry, captivating individuals worldwide. Join us as we delve into the remarkable journey of Marla Aaron and explore how she is reshaping the boundaries of jewelry design.

What started with a single lock has evolved into a diverse collection that can be worn in limitless ways, serving as "jewel tools" to complement and redefine the concept of "precious" in jewelry. While the collection boasts a sleek, industrial aesthetic, its inspiration is deeply rooted in the emotional and personal jewelry of the Victorian and Georgian eras. Over time, Marla Aaron has skillfully incorporated various elements to expand the collection's artistic range.

Marla Aaron's rebellious approach to jewelry led to an innovative milestone in December 2017—the installation of their first jewelry vending machine at the renowned Brooklyn Museum. Embracing their pioneering spirit, Marla and her team are currently in the process of building additional machines to make their unique pieces even more accessible.

The collection received further recognition in 2016 when it was showcased at the Museum of American Finance in New York City as part of the exhibition "Gold: Worth its Weight." This exhibit celebrated the collection's distinctive blend of artistry and craftsmanship, leaving a lasting impression on visitors.

Embracing the power of social media, Marla and her team regularly unveil new designs on Instagram, providing followers with an exclusive first look. With an unstructured approach to releases, each design is a surprise, adding an element of excitement and anticipation for fans of the collection.

Marla's philanthropic initiative, the #lockyourmom Project, is a testament to her compassionate nature. Single moms are gifted sterling silver Baby Heartlocks, specially created for them. This heartwarming project has touched the lives of hundreds of deserving single moms across the nation, showcasing Marla's commitment to making a positive impact.

Prior to launching her collection, Marla accumulated over 25 years of experience in marketing and advertising. Notably, she played a pivotal role in the launch of Cosmopolitan Magazine in Spain and orchestrated unique marketing campaigns, including one that involved sending British sports cars home with recipients. However, her true passion lay in designing jewelry, and she pursued this calling wholeheartedly.

Marla is an alumna of Syracuse University and holds a graduate degree in journalism from Columbia University. She currently resides in New York City with her husband, where she indulges in knitting and eagerly awaits visits from her children who are away at college. When not immersed in these activities, Marla devotes her time to designing jewelry and enthusiastically shares her creations and musings on Instagram, inviting others into her imaginative world.

Soul Spa10 Jun 202200:23:45

What is the soul? How (and why) should you nourish it?

This week, Rabbi Iggy takes us through theories of the soul in an episode that draws from the wisdom of the ancient philosophes, to the Talmud, to a socialite-turned-nun.

In this episode, Rabbi Iggy invites us to build our own relationship to our soul - and reveals how we can nurture it like we do our bodies.

Misfits, Warrior Women And Rabbis18 Sep 202000:58:42

New beginnings require us to look inward, muster up some bravery, and take action. When we prime ourselves and move into these new beginnings, we get to forge a path of change for ourselves and find not only strength, but wisdom and insight in the process. We exercise our sovereignty and proclaim to ourselves and to the world - I MATTER. I have God-given, intrinsic value to be, to exist and to thrive. I get to choose, and by doing so, I manifest my right to live, to love, to express myself and to make a difference. Rosh Hashana (Jewish New Year) is the perfect opportunity to talk to pioneer and visionary Harriet Rossetto who, over 30 years ago, created Beit T’Shuvah, the first Jewish Residential rehab. Her view that everyone is capable of redemption is at the core of BTS and remains to this day not just an idea, but a way of life for many recovering addicts. In this episode, they explore these topics:

  • How does one change?
  • What are the steps one needs to take to create a better life?
  • How do we truly adopt the belief that we matter?

Check out this episode that captures Rabbi Iggy and Harriett Rossetto's conversation about what it means to help people change for the better.

Beyond The Veil...11 Sep 202001:12:20

God-shots, moments of clarity or near death experiences happen to people all the time…

These phenomena are hard to explain, but they create a profound, lasting impact for many.

These moments influence our own understanding of faith, God, spirituality and soul. In this episode of Tattoos and Torah, we dive into the power of the near death experience, and the ways in which they can serve as the portal into those life-changing spiritual insights.

Our guest this week, Dr Eben Alexander is author of the book ‘Proof of Heaven: A Neurosurgeon’s Journey into the Afterlife’, which was on the New York Times Best Seller list for 97 weeks. He has been featured widely in the media and across a range of communities, having presented at hundreds of lectures around the world in churches, hospitals, medical schools, and academic symposia, as well as appearing on TV shows including Super Soul Sunday with Oprah Winfrey.

In this episode, Dr. Alexander speaks to Rabbi Iggy about his personal experience with out of body and near-death experience (NDE), which he experienced while in a meningitis-induced coma in 2008.

Their conversation about consciousness, its nature and reality, and the lessons we can learn from moments of almost crossing over, provokes many inquiries about our values, our connections and our world. If you’re interested in diving deep into spirituality, soul work and what connects us all, then this is MUST-LISTEN episode. (edited)

For Every Moment We Had04 Sep 202000:15:34

From the moment we are born and draw our first breath, we start the countdown to the day we give out our last one.

This clock is inherent to our lives. Birth, in fact, starts the clock. Life causes it.

Our challenge while we’re here is to honor every moment of life, to witness it’s precious uniqueness and make sure we create meaning out of it.

The sacredness of life is in the tension between fleeting moments and the timeliness of each one, between fragility and strength.

Each moment is laden with potentiality. Each life filled with lessons of love, connection, compassion and beauty.

WE ALL HAVE ADDICTIONS!

Our challenge is to not just to find recovery but to learn how to live life better because of it.

As humans on this diverse path of life, riddled with struggle, joy, triumph, addiction, transformation and everything in between, we also have an opportunity to FACE the pain of addiction that leads to overdose, and do so together.

It is in this spirit that we also honor those we’ve lost to addiction on this International Overdose Awareness Day.

We do not need to hide from the reality and impact of addiction (nor can we AFFORD to ignore it).

In this episode of Tattoos and Torah, Rabbi Iggy explore a range of ways we can make meaning in our life and meditate on the role of loss, death and the life we have.

If you are curious about what judaism and other spiritual wisdoms teach about death, loss, life and meanings then this episode is for you.

"Hovering Over The Water"28 Aug 202001:21:22

Our oceans cover 71% of Earth’s surface: that’s serious presence. And yet, we mistreat them, fear their majesty, and abandon them to pollution, poison and trash.

From a spiritual perspective, when we start the book of Genesis, we read that God’s spirit floats above the water. This primordial essence, the vital part of our existence, is there: setting the stage, cradling life, and containing all of the world’s potentiality.

Here is a truth that humans do not LIVE into today: We are charged with the care of these sacred waters. There is a physical and spiritual impact here.

The question I ask is:

Is our mistreatment of the oceans and our environment a reflection of our abandonment of our spiritual life? Can we truly build spiritual strength when we act in ways that are disconnected from our physical environment?

Talking to Markus Reymann from TBA21-Academy, an organization devoted to pushing our knowledge, vital conservation and experience of the ocean through the arts we explore the themes and ideas behind his passion and the actions we must take to save our environment!

In this episode of Tattoos and Torah, Rabbi Iggy and Markus Reymann (Actor and Ecology Activist with TBA21-Academy) explore a range of ways we can go about saving the environment. If you are curious about what your role can be in ocean conversation (and about the  work that’s already underway to preserve our natural treasures), then this episode is for you.

The Voice Of Your Soul; passion and creativity.21 Aug 202000:18:55
Who are you really? How do we find out the language of our self? The language your soul? How do we find our passion? Ignite our creativity? Why is it important in recovery? This episode is for you if you want to get on your way to have more creativity, more meaning and more spirituality in your life? Wonder is the source of creativity, self expression and the moments we stand back and appreciate the majesty of the world. Reading AJ Heschel ideas about wonder and radical amazement “the state of maladjustment to words and notions, is therefore a prerequisite for an authentic awareness of that which is…” When we think of it, Mental cliches, conventional notions. Who wants that? There is a great beauty and great advantage to being a person in recovery sometimes. The brownness of it all , serves as an immune to the banality of it all. In the way that the the big book says ” turning your liabilities into your assets we can turn to our distrust of the system, the rejection of normal mores. To help us find wonder. to embrace our higher incomprehension. Not understand and dismiss but to use it as a step towards discovery, something that might seem wondrous. Not to dismiss it because we don't seem to understand it! Doing that feeds our sense of worthlessness and is toxic. Just because we don't understand at this moment does not say we cant. We have to bravely ask, How can this be? How can it exist? Why is it so? To take our maladjustment and to use it as a lens to see the world. To find radical amazement. To experience life and by doing so to live it. To be it. Create practices that help us find our voice and our creativity like silence maybe ? As Father Richard Rohr suggests The ego loves something it can take sides on. Yet true interior silence does not allow you to take sides. That is one reason contemplation is so liberating and calming. There are no sides to take and only a wholeness to rest in—which frees us to act on behalf of love. we have to be challenging conventional wisdom. We have to ask questions, we have to create room for silence and observation and we have to keep finding new meaning. THAT is creativity and from there we get to see what we want to say to the world. To create. To smile when we see beauty that we perhaps created. We have to either find and art or a hobby.. something that we create.... Holy F*#k, Intimacy And Spirituality14 Aug 202001:33:43

Why is it so hard to talk about sex and intimacy?

We are conditioned to feel shame when it comes to sex, intimacy and our wants. We are not taught how to communicate what feels good to us and what we want from our partners.

How do we overcome that? How do we take control of our own body and our pleasure? And how does this all connect to our recovery, spirituality and creativity?

In this episode of Tattoos and Torah, Rabbi Iggy and Jessica Graham explore the paths one can take to find a more meaningful connection in romantic partnership. They discuss pleasure and spirituality, a well as the way to overcome shame, guilt and fear. Not only that, but they share how recovery and this awareness of intimacy teaches us better ways to live, love and learn about ourselves, our partners and the world.

LOVE: For Those Who Seek it. 07 Aug 202000:22:48

Are you looking for love? How do we maintain it once we “have” it? How does one find it?

In this episode we will talk about all these and how to understand ourselves better and what love is…

Consider this: Like most things in life it’s not easy. But it can be done meaningfully. The ancient greeks had six different definitions or varieties of LOVE. Looking at love from their perspective can inspire us to move beyond our current addiction to romantic love

I believe that it is in our sources that we fine that the key elements of a satisfying and beautiful relationship comes when we are Caring for the other, making sure the we want them to grow and thrive

Every person has his own spiritual essence who’s uniqueness not only is the result of his heredity and education but exists by divine intention. For each and every human being has a specific task to perform in the world, a task that no one else can accomplish though there may well be and more gifted people around to do it

Creativity , Karma and Consequence10 Jul 202001:19:26
