Canada’s proposed EU associate membership is being celebrated as a historic escape from American dependence, but the invitation is not what Canadians have been told.
“Associate member” is not an existing status in the European Union. There are no published terms, no defined cost, no guaranteed single-market access and no explanation of which European regulations Canada could be required to follow.
Then came the bombshell: European diplomats say Ursula von der Leyen’s proposal had never been discussed with the EU member states required to approve it. One called the announcement “unfortunate.” Another warned that von der Leyen may be promising something she cannot deliver.
Canada celebrated the engagement before Europe’s governments had been told about the wedding.
In this episode of Tap the Maple, Bakes examines:
• Why Canada’s proposed EU status does not currently exist
• Why all 27 EU countries may need to approve it
• The resistance already emerging inside Europe
• Why Mark Carney avoided repeating “associate member” in his speech
• What CETA already gives Canada
• Canada’s enormous trade imbalance with Europe
• The regulatory and sovereignty risks
• Why Europe cannot replace the United States
• How anti-Trump emotion is being sold as economic strategy
Trade more with Europe? Absolutely. But Canadians should not mistake applause for approval, a proposal for an agreement or a prestigious title for an economic plan.
Europe can become a larger customer. Europe cannot become our neighbour.
