Tao Te Ching Verse 22 – Being Lived by the Tao21 Nov 202300:42:11

When the ancient Masters said, "If you want to be given everything, give everything up," they weren't using empty phrases. Only in being lived by the Tao can you be truly yourself.
— Stephen Mitchell, Tao Te Ching, Verse 22

Tao Te Ching Verse 21 – The Trap of Desire!17 Nov 202300:40:26

Verse 21 gives us three tools to use in daily life;

1. Stop clinging to ideas.
2. Letting it happen rather than manipulation and control.
3. Looking within

We can only see within when we have stopped clinging and let life happen.

Tao Te Ching Verse 20 – Stop Thinking and End Your Problems!13 Nov 202300:54:00

Much of my problems in life are self-inflicted. I try to control many things that I am incapable of controlling. This "living letting go" is a very different lifestyle than I led before recovery.

Tao Te Ching Verse 19 – Living Without Rules!09 Nov 202300:49:56

Living in the way can bring about a move from a fear-based existence toward a Love-based reality that makes rules a place to hide rather than flourish.

Throw away holiness and wisdom, and people will be a hundred times happier.

Tao Te Ching Verse 18 – Living Above the Pendulum!05 Nov 202300:45:52

Is it possible to live a life of Compassion, which lifts us above criticism and faultfinding?

When the greatness of the Tao is present, action arises from one's own heart.
— Jonathan Star, Tao Te Ching, The Definitive Edition, Verse 18

More identification of what life looks like when we choose substitutes rather than what is real.

Tao Te Ching Verse 17 – The Spiral Downward!01 Nov 202300:51:05

To know Tao alone, without a trace of your own existence, is the highest. Next comes loving and praising it, then fearing it, then despising it.
— Jonathan Star, Tao Te Ching, The Definitive Edition, Verse 17

In all interactions, we are one of these four phases. This is an excellent discussion of self-government and how verse 17 of the Tao Te Ching relates to our recovery experience.

Tao Te Ching Verse 16 – Realizing the Source!28 Oct 202300:47:48

What do I believe is the source?
What actions have resulted in my life that brought about a feeling of peace?
What part do I play?
What are my actions for today?

If you can empty your mind of all thoughts, your heart will embrace the tranquility of peace. Watch the workings of all of creation, but contemplate their return to the source.
— J. H. McDonald, Tao Te Ching, Verse 16

Tao Te Ching Verse 15 – Can I Welcome All Things?20 Oct 202301:00:56

The Master doesn't seek fulfillment. Not seeking, not expecting, she is present and can welcome all things.
— Stephen Mitchell, Tao Te Ching, Verse 15

Welcome is defined as greeting in a glad or friendly way – not tolerate, condone, or endure but welcome. And not only welcome but greet in a friendly manner.

Tao Te Ching Verse 14 – Giving Up the Need to Know!16 Oct 202300:45:47

An excellent discussion of verse 14 of the Tao Te Ching and how it relates to our recovery. Are there really any problems to solve? How can we move from living based on the need to know to compassionate living that circumvents the need to know? What actions must I take to live in a place of ease?

Marshall is a retired Southern Baptist pastor. Marshall has written over 20 books, including The Tao of Christ, a Christian version of the Tao Te Ching, and most recently, The Sermon on the Mount, a non-dual interpretation.

Marshall is not in recovery but does bring much to his interpretation of both Taoist and Christian texts. His experience with non-dual awareness is incredibly insightful, not only in this interview but in his podcast and writings.

Tao Te Ching Verse 9 – Care About People's Approval and You Will Be Their Prisoner.07 Sep 202300:49:13

Fill your bowl to the brim and it will spill. Keep sharpening your knife and it will blunt. Chase after money and security and your heart will never unclench.

Care about people's approval and you will be their prisoner. Do your work, then step back. The only path to serenity.

Tao Te Ching Verse 3 – Whan action is pure and selfless, everything settles into its own perfect place!03 Aug 202300:52:14

In this podcast, we discuss how Taoist principles relate to our personal addiction recovery journey.

The Master leads by emptying people's minds and filling their cores, by weakening their ambition and toughening their resolve. He helps people lose everything they know, everything they desire, and creates confusion in those who think that they know. Practice not-doing, and everything will fall into place.

Lou's Recovery Story – How Al-Anon Changed my Life!28 Jul 202301:04:24

Lou has been attending our Tao recovery meeting for years. Lou is the first Al-anon member that we have had the pleasure of interviewing. One takeaway for me was an Al-Anon saying, referencing the person we are there to try to help.

1. I did not cause my loved one's alcoholism

2. I cannot cure my loved one's alcoholism

3. I cannot control my loved one's alcoholism

I hope you enjoy Lou's story!

Don M's Recovery Story – Creativity!27 May 202300:59:46

"Creativity is a bottomless well. It doesn't run dry, It just needs to be fallow for a time. Pushing it was not the answer. The answer was letting go of it, just releasing it, and letting it happen." Don M.

I hope you enjoy Don's story!

We are taking a break from the weekly group meeting and interviewing some past participants, Facebook group members, and a few authors. If your recovery has been enhanced by Taoist text, don't hesitate to contact us and share your experience!

Here are some of the questions we tackle;

1. Background; Where from, vocation, family, a picture of your life then and now.

2. Has your view of the H.P. changed since you started your recovery journey? How similar is your present H.P. to the one you grew up with?

3. Why does the Tao speak to you? How do you see your relationship with the Tao? What is the Tao to you?

4. Do you have a favorite Tao verse or quote?

5. Do you recommend any Tao podcasts other than this one?

6. Any Tao-related books or devotionals?
