The Truth About Childhood — And Why Moms Are Leaving the Workforce Ep 11826 Aug 202500:21:25

Why are so many mothers leaving the workforce — and what does it mean for our children?

The Washington Post calls it “erasing pandemic gains.”

But after 35+ years as a speech-language pathologist working with hundreds of families, I see something deeper: maybe these mothers are choosing to reclaim what matters most.

In this episode, I share two powerful family stories that illustrate the difference presence makes — one stretched thin and overwhelmed, the other grounded and intentional — plus the science that backs it up:

  • Erica Komisar’s research on the first three years as a critical window for brain and emotional development.
  • Head Start’s long-term studies showing short-term academic gains faded by third grade, while the strongest benefits were relational.
  • Hart & Risley’s “30 million word gap” study — not just about word counts, but the quality of interaction, proving that presence and tone matter more than quantity.

We’ll talk about identity, vocation, and why women can have it all — just NOT all at the same time. And why childhood is too precious to rush.

12 Easy Tips to Teach Your Toddler to Talk at Home Without the Stress 16 Nov 202200:46:05

The most common question I get from new parents is, "How do I help my baby or toddler learn to talk at home?"

The key to increasing your child's language skills is simple (not always easy), but it's not complicated: model language, limit technology, and get messy!

Children learn best with you ... through play-based interactions that can be embedded in every day activities.

You might say to yourself, "yeah, I know that already." BUT do you live by these examples? Do you really think about how you engage with your baby or toddler? Are you really, REALLY present?

Whether your little one is at home with you full-time or part-time; whether you use childcare / daycare or extended family ... new moms and new dads who are truly present, who understand building engagement and communication skills take everyday opportunities and commitment parenting.

This modern day world makes it more overwhelming, more distracting and more uncertain. But in today's episode I start to break it all down - we review 12 Easy Tips that EVERY parent needs in their back pocket (and on their fridge), to refresh their role, and boost their confidence.

Imagine your toddler thriving, confident with communicating, comfortable with engaging and eager to learn.

You've got this... so let's get started.

If this resonates with you, please go back and listen to Episode #13 What Parenting Style Are You?

Why Don't Kids Listen? 5 Steps to Get Your Child to Listen Better!27 Oct 202200:22:23

Why do you have to repeat something over and over until you find yourself yelling?

Why are they tuning us out?

Although we need to be mindful of early signs of true developmental issues - MOST kids have LEARNED to not listen ... and the truth is, we kind-of trained them to tune us out.

Yep - that's right. You read that correctly.

In today's episode I share 5 simple steps to get your child to listen better ...  it's on us, though.

Parenting can be a complicated journey, and that's why Talking Toddlers focuses on new moms, new parents & grandparents - gain perspective, step back, find clarity, and be open to trying a new twist here and there.

By adjusting our style of communication, we can shape their listening.

Consider the WHY ... and then you can better understand most of these challenging behaviors / habits are typical, normal, healthy growing events - and if we, the parents in charge, stay open to learning-on-the-job; if we open our hearts & minds to what it's like to be 18 months, 24 months, 36 months... even 5 years old???

We have to stop ourselves from thinking & feeling like an adult ... and think like a child who is working hard every. single. day.

If this resonates with you, please go back and listen to Episode #13 What Parenting Style Are You?

5 Strategies to Help Your Toddler Talk With Confidence & Ease ... Make it FUN20 Oct 202200:38:01

Communication is a two-way street.  So why are so many toddlers struggling at finding their words?

Are you uncertain if your toddler is on track developmentally, or are you looking for confirmation? Do you compare to other kids his age ... or hear that voice in your heading, "all kids eventually talk, right?"

You are not alone; most new parents are 'guessing' and 'doing the best they can.' But I don't want you to go it alone ...

In today's episode, I break down five strategies that might be holding your toddler back from finding his voice, expressing herself freely, and engaging with you with glee.

Trust me when I say - most therapists forget these strategies ... even I catch myself from time to time.

You'll walk away from this episode inspired to "be more present" and have more fun WITH your toddler. You'll understand how to adjust everyday activities to give him time to speak and keep the dialogue going ... even with one- and two-word utterances.

You'll begin to tweak the way YOU TALK to encourage him to use his words mores and practice in a playful, joyful manner - with more ease and confidence.

Most importantly, you'll know how to listen, wait ... and truly be present (even in this fast-paced world we live in.)

Enjoy and let go of perfection ... raising kids is messy! You've got this.

PLAY-Based Learning with 12-18 month olds - keep is simple, let them struggle Ep 2212 Oct 202200:53:16

Episode 022

PLAY is the WORK of your child …

In this episode, I expand on what types of play is best for the 12 - 18 month old AND why they need you to play with them.

It’s a very exciting growth period with a lot of Aha moments.

Your toddler is constantly moving, doing, and trying things out … don’t inhibit this exploration. He is busy building his brain circuits!

Also - I explain why they need to struggle - every once in a while.

Don’t be so quick to “do it for them.”

Childhood is messy - and us adults need to get comfortable with the mess, because the other side is brighter and so much more rewarding.

Penelope Leach, author of Your Baby and Child: From Birth to Age Five wrote:

For a small child there is not division between playing and learning;

Between the things he or she does “just for fun” and things that are ‘educational.’

The child learns while living and any part of living that is enjoyable - is also play.

It shouldn’t end with childhood. Let’s bring it back into our lives, through our children we can reignite our play skills.

Everyone benefits.

Part 3: Does it feel like guilty pleasure? Or is it truly hardwired into our brain?27 Sep 202200:40:06

Did you know that the lack of play can make us more vulnerable to depression, anxiety, impulsivity and sedentarism?

Do you feel pressure to orchestrate your time with your toddler, or perhaps you were told "they figure it out on their own" - let them be kids.

As we continue our discussion into the Science of PLAY I share the need for both ... some structure AND free style play... but the key is that YOU need to tap into your play skills, too.

Parents are great models, guides and play partners.

You don't want to misunderstand the reasons your kids are intrinsically driven to be playful, to tinker with objects, to get messy, to tell tales, to daydream, to make up songs,  to wrestle and ride their bikes fast.

As I wrap up discussing the "7 Types of PLAY" by Dr. Stuart Brown, it's important for you mom and dad to become real with your play skills - we often lose touch as adults - too busy, too many responsibilities? We may feel guilty or even embarrassed when we are "caught" messing around with no real purpose.

The science is pretty revealing - PLAY is central to sparking excitement, achieving wholeness, and building resilience - it is NOT short-lived. We can rekindle it and I assure you, it will make you happier - and so will your kids.

Play might be the most important work we ever do!

So as you listen to this episode, think about how the new school routine can take over your schedule - more duty-like and less natural flow?

Find some authentic family play time. Be creative and mix it up.

Next week's episode I will share specific examples for different ages - but it's always important to have the background, the science that supports our theory, and some real-life experience.

That's what TALKING TODDLERS is about - helping our youngest be engaged, curious, creative, playful, interested and happy - with YOU.

Part 2: The Science of PLAY - It's as critical as sleep & nutrition to your child's healthy development.20 Sep 202200:56:35

PLAY is as critical as sleep & nutrition to your child’s healthy development.

In this episode, I continue to share the 7 Types of Play identified through Dr. Stuart Brown’s work at the National Institute For Play by exploring #4 SOCIAL PLAY.

Social Play - one of the most complex forms of play, helps your child establish social norms, develop interpersonal skills, and helps him create successful friendships and relationships as adults.

Research provides three subtypes of social play: belonging, celebratory and rough & tumble play - which I explain in great detail in today’s episode - it’s that important.

As our modern world continues to change we need to stay vigilant, building a better understanding on how best to support our children through these early, critical years.

It’s not always easy, but it can be FUN!

PLAY is anything but trivial … yet, it is what brings us pure joy, satisfaction and rich connection with others.

Don't let it end with childhood. Let’s bring it back into our lives, through our children and our families, through neighborhood communities and play groups. Everyone benefits.

“Play is as important to our mental health, as food is to our physical health.”

If you haven't listened to Part 1 on PLAY, Episode 19 - go back and listen. I cover #1-3.

  1. Attunement - parents begin to establish an emotional connection with your infant through activities like peek-a-boo and parentese (sing-song baby talk).
  2. Body Play & Movement - your child develops a spatial understanding of themselves and world around them, for example: leaping in the air teaches him the effects of gravity.
  3. Object Play - playing with toys and objects develops problem-solving skills through exploration and manipulation.

THE SCIENCE OF PLAY: Why PLAY is vital to learning & social development. Ep 1906 Sep 202200:53:09

In this episode Erin introduces the strong connection between the PRACTICE of PLAY and the emotional and cognitive development of  the brain.

PLAY is anything but trivial.

It's a biological drive as integral to our health as sleep or nutrition.

PLAY SCIENCE is a real thing - and we all need to take note - no matter what age, with or without children, at work and at home.

This is the first episode in a series for the month of September - as we begin the Back-To-School schedule (whether that's inside home or at a school site) - we all need to re-evaluate our feelings toward play.

I believe parents are getting bad advice - and play is getting a bad rap!

I begin this conversation with introducing Dr. Stuart Brown's work and site his book, PLAY: How It Shapes the Brain, Opens the Imagination, and Invigorates the Soul

He states, “Of all animal species, humans are the biggest players of all. We are built to play and built through play. When we play, we are engaged in the purest expression of our humanity, the truest expression of our individuality. Is it any wonder that often the times we feel most alive, those that make up our best memories, are moments of play? That is something that struck me.”

The National Institute for Play (NIFP) describes seven different patterns of play - and I cover the first three in this episode. We will continue this discussion throughout September - as PLAY is that vital to your children!

Consider these benefits:

  • strong correlation between success & play activity
  • builds self-confidence
  • boosts creativity
  • development of social skills
  • helps memory, language and symbolic recognition
  • teaches stress management
  • promotes healthy physical development

Mom, put on your oxygen mask first, please!24 Aug 202200:38:53

As the summer comes to an end and we start to transition back to school schedules, whatever that may look like for you and your family, change is hard.

Give yourself time to adjust.

Be patient with yourself. Be patient with your family. Be patient with your little ones.

Be realistic.

This episode is a reminder that parenting is a journey and you are learning-on-the-job. There is no perfect path ... stay open to growth and exploring new ideas.

Why Do Some Kids Persevere? Are they just born that way?16 Aug 202200:47:11

Why do some kids persevere, figure it out, or seem to be unflappable?

Are some kids just born that way? Can we become more resilient?

Can we humans change our perception, develop grit and tenacity - or is it fixed at birth?

In this episode, I dive deep into some of the original research behind the FIXED vs GROWTH MINDSET by Dr. Carol Dweck; how we can use her large body of work to benefit our parenting style while raising our children and even challenge ourselves to continue to grow and learn.

Of course, I cover some honest  controversies that appear 20 years into exploring her body of work and impressions - yet, I find much of the FIXED vs GROWTH MINDSET theory to be worthwhile and encourage all parents to consider how we approach effort vs. praise while raising toddlers and beyond.

Remember, this podcast is about asking questions. The more I have studied the process of learning or how the brain learns to learn, the better I understand how growth and change are more in our control (even though we don't like to admit it) - maybe because then we are more accountable for the outcomes.

We know that our words have meaning, and humans have a tendency to lock into those  meanings with strict boundaries:

  • I'm not very good at math.
  • I don't like public speaking.
  • I am a slow reader.
  • I get frustrated easily.
  • I'm not very creative.

Now don't get me wrong, I do believe we all have different strengths and weaknesses - different gifts and interests, and we tend to gravitate toward the things we are good at and make us feel better about ourselves.

But where did some of the initial "perceptions" come from?

5 Brain Myths That Won't Go Away - Don't Fall For Them!09 Aug 202200:58:18

Can you separate brain facts from brain fiction?

In this episode I cover how several brain myths, or neuromyths, won't go away and have led us to ineffective or even counterproductive strategies as parents, teachers, and students.

Don't fall for them! Challenge yourself to think logically as I walk you through 5 Neuromyths that persist - even when debunked years ago!

So why do misconceptions about the brain continue? Most people simply want to believe - it's an easy, quick answer to personal challenges or when faced with a child who "beats to a different drum."

Yet, research indicates that most of what teachers are 'sure they know about the brain'  is simply wrong - even when faced with limited evidence.

In this episode, I share some possible reasons behind this persistence and how parents can weed through the noise.

  • Legitimate science results get oversimplified by the media to generate sensationalized headlines
  • Complex science results are misinterpreted and Word-Of-Mouth carries them through schools, teaching methods, parent coaching, and personal growth programs.
  • Results are over-generalized and seem to take hold into everyday interactions - AND policies, programs and trainings are created around weak, general assumptions.

I admit, it can be confusing - especially since researchers themselves can't even agree on how best to study the brain  ... BUT that doesn't mean we don't question such broad sweeping statements, such as "we only use 10% of our brain's capacity."

I promise after listening to this episode you will feel more empowered to ask questions, listen to your intuition and begin to let go of misconceptions that don't serve your children.

What Would I Do As A New Mom? Top 10 Parenting Essentials26 Jul 202200:39:58

I am often asked, "What would you do if you were in my shoes?" If I could take my 35 years of clinical practice,  continued education and training, plus my personal parenting experience - without a doubt, these would be my TOP 10 PARENTING ESSENTIALS.

They aren't in any specific order, but they do relate to one another. Parenting through these first three years is often exhausting, but if you have a framework it's much more fun!

Unfortunately, too many parents (especially moms) feel so alone, overwhelmed or embarrassed to ask for help. Navigating this modern day life doesn't come with a "manual" - yes, there is a lot of noise on the internet and too many books to filter through, but that just seems to add to feelings of inadequacies.

Today's episode gives you the top 10 areas to focus on:

  1. Breastfeed/breast milk
  2. Tummy Time
  3. Baby Led Weaning
  4. Read, read, read
  5. Music
  6. Crawling
  7. Limited Screen Time
  8. Build Routines
  9. Narrate
  10. Play with Purpose

KEEP IT SIMPLE: Focus on the basics: nutrition, movement, talking, sharing, singing, building routines, play together - then question if screen time is necessary?

Your little one needs YOU over anything else - your time, your attention, your love and your understanding.

Keep them close to home for as long as possible... growth & development are a process. It happens over time, everyday, through everyday activities and meaningful engagement.

But moms, dads, grandparents and primary caretakers across the board need to stay vigilant - becoming empowered with knowledge helps build courage to stand up for your beliefs.

Do Developmental Milestones Matter?20 Jul 202200:46:29

This episode covers why parents need to step up and be their child's strongest (and best informed) advocate. We can't rely on "systems" such as your pediatricians, early intervention, preschools, or educators. Too many of them take the "wait & see" approach, are spread too thin, or simply don't have the knowledge to inquire further.

Parents who have a better understanding of how to use / interpret developmental milestones are in a much better position to guide their child to success, health and happiness. Yes, there are ranges, but that does NOT mean we don't have expectations.

In this episode Erin encourages all parents:

  1. To be your own detective
  2. Recognize sweeping generalizations are misleading
  3. Don't take the "wait & see" approach

Erin touches upon how the recent CDC changes in their developmental milestones caused serious concerns across various disciplines, and how the controversy is far from over.

What Parenting Style Are You?12 Jul 202200:38:53

In this episode we cover the four (4) main parenting styles and how they influence your toddler's learning.

I always use "labels" with a word of caution, but they can be helpful when we are learning something new or searching for a better understanding.  The quadrants are on a continuum, a kind of slider ruler. We can change according to the situation, developmental stage, number of children, outside pressure, family history and internal voice of "should's" or "could's."

  1. Permissive: No rules; absolute indulgence; "How can I say NO to you?"
  2. Authoritarian: High demand & High expectation; Rules, Rules, Rules; I am the Boss
  3. Neglectful: Uninvolved; careless; aloof; lack of compassion or warmth; distracted
  4. Authoritative: clear boundaries; High expectation with equal reciprocal; "Can we discuss?" Assertive yet compassionate

I encourage you to be OPEN to learning and evaluating  where you are today - knowing we can always make different choices tomorrow. Let our children watch how we are willing to own our mistakes, come back to the relationship, and start again.

This modern life brings many mixed outcomes - which means we all need to be vigilant with how we show up, design and shape our days; and how we create daily habits that either support growth and expansion, or restrict it.

Do you come to the table with an OPEN - or FIXED - mindset?

How do you see your toddler in the future?

Help build his "learning muscles" by providing boundaries, clear expectations, and room to mess up without fear, guilt,  or shame.

Parenting is a learning process. Give yourself room to develop how to nurture, discipline through guidance and practice open communication.

Unpredictable Behaviors Before Two: Eating, Speaking and Learning Everyday Ep 1105 Jul 202200:44:00

In this episode we continue to make a strong connection with eating / chewing and speech development from 18 - 24 months of age. Understanding that kids' preferences may wax and wane doesn't change your style of parenting. Parenting with consistency requires us to set the boundaries around healthy choices while allowing exploration.

Parents who understand how structure, function and development fit together can feel confident their toddler stays on track, and feels at peace even when it gets messy!

#010 Experiencing & Managing Hunger - Why It's Important With Your Toddler28 Jun 202200:39:12

In this episode we continue the series on the connection between eating and speech development. There is a massive developmental explosion - again - between 9 and 15 months and parents feel better prepared and act with confidence when they know what to expect.

Toddlers can be unpredictable at times, yet when families have a plan and are able to develop routines, you find peace more often than not. Parenting with intention makes the whole family more relaxed. You look forward to meal times, you understand it's a learning process, you are open to being messy, and truly embrace your toddler's growth!

We don't want to rush these beautiful days; we want to slow them down and savor each developmental milestone.  Watching your toddler build a healthy relationship with food, being able to recognize when he's just fussy or tired and not truly hungry - will alleviate many struggles.

Toddlers Talk Better by Chewing Real Food21 Jun 202200:45:40

In this episode I share the truth about Fruit & Vegetable Pouches. I cannot speak how eating/chewing and speech development are connected without sharing the truth on pouches…  we’ve been duped!

Babies and toddlers MUST experience a variety of food tastes, textures and consistencies in order to build a healthy relationship with real food - as well as exercise their oral-motor skills, LITERALLY.

Chewing and speech go hand-in-hand.

I cover the TOP 3 reasons these abundant food pouches are NOT IN YOUR FAVOR and actually WORKING AGAINST your little guy's development.

Listen with an open mindset.

  1.  NO EXPERIENCE with real food - it's  all pureed together! How do you learn the differences between:  broccoli, carrots, chicken, ham, berries, or apples?

- no touching, smelling, tasting, or looking at different foods

- no chewing which starts the digestion process and helps sense when you're satiated or full

- no opportunity to learn how to feed themselves (fists, fingers, spoon) - just suck???

- no texture means NO actual chewing (which stimulates teeth eruption and strengthens jaws - which helps with tongue placement ... leading to better speech sounds!)

Yikes, it's all connected.

2.  MISLEADINGLY SWEET - everything is blended with cheaper and sweeter foods (apples/pears), so the “spinach” or “quinoa” are masked with sugar!

How do they develop a taste between foods such as broccoli and beef?

3.  NO REAL FIBER - do we really wonder why kids have gut/digestion/poop issues?

For example (on average):

1 pouch has 12-15 grams of sugar and 1 gram of fiber

1 cup of sliced apples has 11 grams of sugar and 3 grams of fiber

1 pouch has 1 tablespoon of sugar!!!!

Chewing an actual apple gives your child fiber, chewing experience (lips/jaw/tongue workout) and satisfaction!

Even when parents / consumers pushed-backed against the amount of sugar … the companies diluted the “recipe” with water to decrease the percentage of sugar per pouch… interesting strategy, right?

Bottom line: real food = real development & real learning!

Happy listening!

How Eating & Speech Development Are Connected and How to Enhance It Naturally (Part 2) Ep 814 Jun 202200:58:49

The human being is an intricate system of systems - and navigating this modern world keeps parents on their toes - or at least it should. Whether you're thinking about having a baby, just became a new parent , or a parent of a first grader - this episode will help shed light on how the developmental parts fit together.

We often need to step back and get different perspectives to see the whole picture (whole child.)

Here we continue  to review the  remarkable connection between eating and speech development - and even if your little guy is getting ready for 1st grade, reflect back to how you managed those first several years. Is there a connection?  How is his attention, listening, speaking, organization, and engagement?

Knowledge is empowering and can bring clarity when there's uncertainty. We can meet our kids where they are and support growth and independence  when we ourselves feel supported and understood.

If you haven't listened to last week's episode - it would be helpful to go back now to #007.

Today's episode covers the 4 - 9 month period and here are some the the highlights:

  • when does your baby first start to use jaw, lip, tongue muscles separately?
  • when do teeth begin to come in for chewing & biting... how does that relate to speech?
  • what kind of "workouts" help to make more room in your baby's mouth for safe eating?
  • doesn't a baby just start talking when he/she is ready?
  • how do tummy time, high chair sitting, and speech relate?
  • are puree foods necessary?
  • why do baby's make such a mess eating?
  • is chewing with your mouth closed automatic?
  • what's grading at this age?
  • is Baby-Led Weaning a real thing?
  • what about choking?

Are Eating & Speech Development Connected? Does it matter? (Part 1) Ep 707 Jun 202201:00:23

This episode topic is SO CRITICAL that I ended up creating a series which will be covered over the next several weeks. You won't want to miss any of them!

This episode is Part 1, and we dive deep into your baby's or toddler's relationship between early eating (sucking and chewing) and speech development. Why? Because we are "hard-wired" to do both AND one feeds the other (pun intended.)

Unfortunately, parents often feel lost or overwhelmed with the amount of information out there, and pediatrician office visits lack the time and honestly, the knowledge to help with specific questions.

Yet, feeding, eating and speech challenges continue to rise. Again, we must ask, Why? Parents are looking for clear information on how best to navigate this modern world, raise healthy eaters, strong communicators, and happily engaged young kids!

I begin by describing critical primitive reflexes which are necessary for survival, then we move into what oral motor structures and functions to observe and monitor in the first three months. I also touch upon two (2) additional areas of development that are KEY to building strength, stability, coordination, and a healthy immune system! These areas cannot be overlooked or under-estimated. You may want to listen to it twice! It's that important.

To help you become your child's Number 1 guide and influencer, I also created a "Check List" you will want to download. CLICK HERE to sign up to my email list and  DOWNLOAD  YOUR COPY NOW.

Even if your little guy or gal is a bit older (1-5 years old), this will be very helpful as you may unravel any current issues or questions. This will empower you to  seek appropriate support through a feeding specialist, speech pathologist or other highly specialized professional.

Maybe you're working with a therapist already, and they are focusing on individual sounds your child is struggling with - BUT they aren't addressing the oral-motor (physical) aspects of speech. Hmmm.  Unfortunately, that happens more often than I'd like to admit.

This series will help you generate questions to bring to your speech therapist, teacher or pediatrician. Don't settle with "it takes time" or "he'll speak better when he's ready." Nope. Kids would be clear and understood, IF THEY COULD!

Remember, this is just the beginning. We will continue this discussion over the next several weeks. Stay tuned and share with family, friends, other therapists, your doctor and/or school.

Happy listening!

#006 How are speech and language skills different? 31 May 202200:52:05

In this episode I share the importance of understanding how speech skills and language development differ. Parents are pivotal in laying this foundation, especially in the first few years, so you don't ever want to leave it to chance.

When you  know why babbling is an important precursor to his first words - you'll want to sing, read, and giggle all day long with your little one. When you realize YOU are the most important influencer in your young child's life ... you may want to rethink preschool, or perhaps adjust the hours. Either way, this episode will bring clarity and purpose to your everyday activities as you nurture both speech and language development with certainty.

In later episodes we'll dive deep into oral motor (speech & eating) skills, so today it's about recognizing how to nurture your whole child.

We know our modern world provides a lot of wonderful conveniences - BUT if we keep these early years close to home, bring back basics, make it natural and engaging  - your beautiful child will stay on track and thrive!

Being an informed parent helps you understand subtle differences, identify issues early, seek professional help with intention, and prevent life-long challenges. It's all about prevention.

Mindful parenting lets you guide your child's development with confidence, grace, excitement and ease -  you'll still be exhausted, but it'll be because of a full day of playing with purpose!

Reading To Babies And Beyond: The Top 4 Purposes Ep 00524 May 202200:51:43

Reading To Babies And Beyond - The Top 4 Purposes

In this episode, I share specific purposes behind reading to your baby and beyond. No matter what age you start, reading aloud gives you the best bang for the buck - regarding time, money and effort. It cannot be understated.

Remember what your END GOAL is … build a love for literacy, rich vocabulary, positive attention, imagination and healthy connections, to just name a few.

Reading and writing skills are two sides of the same coin - and are NOT NATURAL. They are built upon a strong oral language system, i.e., listening and talking. Reading aloud provides so much opportunity - at any age!

Parents can sometimes overlook this rich-language experience, thinking, “babies don’t understand yet, reading to them is more important later.” NOPE … not true. Listen to gain insight into just how remarkable newborns, babies and toddlers are - and how much they rely on you to guide them through this modern world.

Even if you don’t like reading out loud … he’s just a baby, he needs you and your voice!

Purpose #1:  Connection & Bonding - your voice is their life-line

Purpose #2:  Books as a Script (facilitating tool) - use everywhere, everyday

Purpose #3:  Create Routines to build self-regulation and independence

Purpose #4:  Language Acquisition takes practice and needs 21,000 words a day (minimum)

Books are your friend - and together build endless opportunities.

HAPPY LISTENING!!

Brains Are Built NOT Born Ep 417 May 202200:35:04
Brains Are Built NOT Born Ep 416 May 202200:35:04

In this episode, I share that although newborns / babies are designed to acquire speech and language naturally, it takes effort ... by all parties - the caretakers and the baby / toddler.

Human babies are born highly unfinished ... they are still under construction.

We understand better how everyday experiences wire our brains (neuroplasticity) and create neuro-connections and networks (learning), but most kids need to be encouraged and convinced to put in the effort.

We can't forget how much our kids rely on us to guide them, model and practice.

Early development is "natural" BUT it's just the beginning - parents are pivotal in guiding their children and helping the succeed - keep moving forward. Even if it's common in this modern day to "let kids be kids" or to think "they'll figure it all out on their own."

My mission is to remind parents of the remarkable gift they have, and how to enhance every day activities to benefit growth, build relationships and acquire language processing skills.

Learning is cumulative - and life long, but we humans must override our desire to "just survive another day." Your baby / toddler needs you to show them the way!

Take inventory - how are your interactions; how much do you truly engage with your little guy or gal beyond taking care of personal needs? This modern day world is busy, stressful and overwhelming - especially as a parent. Being mindful is easier said than done, but I want to share what a difference it makes.

Happy listening!

Must Haves to Get to First Words (Part 2) Ep 309 May 202200:39:42

This episode continues from last week, discussing the 10 Must-Haves to Get to First Words. Children don't just wake up on their first birthday and start talking ... there is A LOT of serious work, growth, and development that can sometimes get lost in the shuffle between feedings, diapers, sleeping and just keeping your little one safe!

Last episode we covered the first 5, so if you haven't listened to last week, go back for #1 - 5. It's important you get the whole early developmental process - just like when building a house, we NEED A STRONG FOUNDATION.

Tune in to learn:

#6.   PLAYS APPROPRIATELY WITH A VARIETY OF TOYS - pretend play is closely related to speech & language development. It demonstrates your child is beginning to understand how the world works and how s/he can engage.

#7.   RECEPTIVE LANGUAGE - understanding simple, concrete statements is critical to staying on-track. This is often THE MOST OVERLOOKED red flag.

#8.   USE HIS / HER VOICE - intentional & purposeful vocalization. Babies need to be noisy! These are the important prelinguistic "workouts" - grunts, squeals, whines, and babbling.

#9.  GESTURES - your child is truly using gestures on his own, with intent and purpose: waving, pointing, blows kiss, shakes head no, pats or gives you objects.

CLICK HERE for the article I mentioned in the episode, by FIRST WORDS* Project.

*  This article does highlight "Earlier is Better" - but please recognize that if a child continues to struggle beyond his 3rd birthday - do NOT limit your expectations. Those first three years are using 'mother nature' to the fullest - kids are typically little sponges, but growth & development is LIFE LONG.  Keep asking questions and seeking guidance.

#10.   IMITATION of ACTIONS - Your child does this routinely! This would include gestures, sounds, simple words and actions.  And s/he is beginning to initiate interactions much more easily with others to get needs met AND to play with you!

Happy listening!

Must Haves to Get to First Words - (Part 1) Ep 203 May 202200:35:35

In this episode, I introduce the first 5 precursors a baby must have to be Developmentally Ready to Talk  for you to consider. This modern world can be confusing, and I don't want you to leave it to chance or to feel uncertain. Some parents may not be aware how much they can do with their babies to build a strong language foundation and help establish a true connection.  Growth and development are not passive. They need YOU to be their guide.

If you're feeling a bit lost, I provide specifics on how to prioritize and what to look for - even during every day activities, such as bathing or eating. Parents can entice, connect, and strengthen early speech skills, naturally.  You've got this!

Next week's episode will cover #6-10

Introduction / Why Now? Ep #125 Apr 202200:40:26

Talking Toddler’s host, Erin Hyer, shares why she is starting her podcast now… April 2022.

If you're a new mom of a young toddler or preschooler and feeling a bit overwhelmed, uncertain, or perhaps looking for confirmation on how well your beautiful toddler is really doing - maybe questioning the “wait and see” recommendation by your pediatrician, or feeling a bit guilty for sheltering him during these unprecedented times, Erin wants you to STOP.

There is no time to look back and no time to “wait and see.” Erin knows you're looking for ways to be proactive and parent with courage - all you need is an experience guide.

Because of her 35 years of clinical practice - on the floor, working with a variety of families, consulting with preschools, training teachers and new graduate students, diving deep into the science, asking questions - she refuses to get sucked into the overwhelming acceptance of “new normals” - skyrocketing numbers of late talkers, non-verbal preschoolers, ADHD, Autism, Anxiety, poor sleep, picky eating, lack of self-regulation, and the list goes on.

Erin’s experience has given her opportunities to be part of those who continually question this “fixed” mindset - those who’s very nature is to “think outside the box,” to peel back the layers, ask WHY, and find solutions.

If you’re a new mom who's eager to truly shape your toddler’s growth, to be proactive, refuse to leave it “to chance,” or unwilling to “wait & see” - you’ll love following Talking Toddlers - as Erin’s mission is to reduce the clutter, communicate clearly, and build a community of like-minded courageous mothers. Let’s get started.

Is My Baby’s Development Normal? Understanding Milestones & Red Flags: Part 1 Ep 113 22 Jul 202500:45:40

The 4 Building Blocks of Speech Development – Part 1

Long before your toddler says their first real word, two powerful foundations (milestones) must already be in place: interaction and understanding.

These aren’t “nice to have” skills — they are non-negotiable building blocks for speech, language, connection, and future learning.

Yet so many parents are told to wait and see, when in fact, there’s so much YOU can do now.

In this episode, Erin shares:

  • The first two building blocks of speech development
  • Why interaction (shared attention) is the starting line
  • How understanding language comes before using it
  • How development is dynamic (not linear!)
  • The red flags parents often miss
  • What to change at home right now if you’re noticing signs of delay (or just want to keep him on track)
  • And how to recognize real progress — even before words appear

You’ll leave feeling more empowered, more aware, and ready to take action — not out of fear, but from a place of clarity and confidence.

They Got It WRONG: The Hidden Link Between Eating and Speech Development Ep 126 21 Oct 202500:45:38

In this episode, Erin Hyer — pediatric speech-language pathologist and host of Talking Toddlers — unpacks how modern feeding habits are quietly undermining children’s oral-motor development and what parents can do to course-correct with confidence.

You’ll discover:

  • How pouches, purees, and processed foods keep kids stuck in baby patterns

  • The simple, God-designed rhythm that connects eating, breathing, and talking

  • Practical ways to strengthen your child’s jaw, tongue, and attention every day

Because when we understand how kids learn to eat and talk, we can help them thrive — one bite, one word, one day at a time.

Is babbling just a cute stage—or a sign of something deeper?

In this episode of Talking Toddlers, Erin dives into the often-overlooked world of prelinguistic development during your baby’s first year.

Drawing on 35+ years of clinical experience, Erin explains how babbling builds the foundation for speech, how movement (yes, even tummy time!) connects to oral motor skills, and why quiet babies need your attention—not just patience.

Crawling Got Cut—But It’s Still Critical - Here’s Why Ep 10422 Apr 202501:00:16

Part 2 of the “Is My Baby’s Development Normal?” Mini-Series

What happens when a milestone disappears from the checklist?

In this episode, we’re digging into a surprising decision: the CDC no longer considers crawling a core developmental milestone.

But does that mean it’s no longer important?

Absolutely not.

With 35+ years of clinical experience in early childhood development, I’ll walk you through why crawling still plays a crucial role in brain development, sensory integration, coordination, and even future learning.

We’ll explore the sequence of gross motor milestones—tummy time, rolling, crawling, standing, and walking—and how each one builds the foundation for what comes next.

You’ll also learn:

  • Why some babies skip crawling (and what to watch for)
  • How early movement impacts speech, attention, and emotional regulation
  • What you can do today to support your baby’s development—no fancy toys required

If you’ve ever wondered whether your baby is on track—or why movement matters at all—this is the episode for you.

What's Normal Anyway? Understanding Developmental Milestones Ep 10309 Apr 202500:39:38

When should my baby be talking?

Crawling?

Walking?”

If you’ve ever typed those words into Google at 2 a.m., you’re not alone.

In this episode of Talking Toddlers, Erin tackles one of the most common fears new parents have: Is my baby falling behind?

With 35+ years in early intervention, she breaks down what developmental milestones really mean, why PROGRESS matters more than perfection.

Research demonstrates that proactive parenting can truly shape your child’s future.

You’ll learn:

  • What milestones are—and what they’re NOT

  • Why “normal” is a range, not a deadline

  • What it means to be a proactive parent (hint: it’s not about perfection)

  • The “3 P’s” approach: Present, Purposeful, Playful

  • Why small daily habits are more powerful than weekly ‘sessions’

  • What to do when progress stalls—and what to avoid

Whether you’re a first-time mom or just looking for clarity and confidence, this episode will help you understand your child’s development without the overwhelm.

I know it can feel overwhelming—especially in a world full of charts, apps, and social media noise.

But you don’t need to know everything.

You just need to know what matters most.

You’re learning on the job. That’s okay.
You’re asking questions. That’s powerful.
You’re showing up. And that’s what your child needs more than anything.

You are not behind—you’re right on time.

You’ve got this. And I’m here to help you every step of the way.
