  • What is it that makes this film such a tearjerker
  • Is this a kids film by default?  Does Pixar ever go another direction?
  • Is the plot regarding Kevin and Charles Muntz stupid
  • Who is Charles Muntz a caricature of?
  • We talk a lot about shapes
  • Ian and Hermes appear in the Coda to keep talking about Mystic River
  • Whether or not Up is the Best Film Ever

  • Whether this film needed more intolerance to make the point they're making
  • If we judge this film more harshly than we should based on some sort of PIxar curve
  • We discuss which nationality's story we feel this is supposed to be suggesting
  • One of us almost don't survive the recording
  • We're joined by BFF of the BFE, Juleen, for the endgame

  • And is Obi-Wan too bloodthirsty?
Ep 29 - Dumbo (1941 - w/ Dan from Lil' Bitch Pod)13 Aug 202001:53:10

We've run away to join the circus with yet another Disney Animated Classic to review and we've gone all the way back to 1941 to review the shortest film in the Disney Canon, in Dumbo.  Unlike the eponymous elephant, we have plenty to say as we tackle a film that includes one of Walt's greatste creations of a beloved and adorable children's character with some outright ugly representations and tactics by Walt & co.  Join your favourite Disney Podcasting team - Ellie, Ethan, and Ian – alongside our special attraction, Dan from the Lil' Bitch Pod, as we analyse Dumbo..  Ellie swoons over baby Dumbo, Ethan and Ian discuss the crows at considerable length, Dan tries to make some sense of Pink Elephants on parade, Ian wishes everything didn't fade out so abruptly and we're all a bit worried that we've broken Dumbo for Dan and we consider if this wouldn't have been a better choice as a package film.

In other Disney news, we give the 2nd episode of "Muppets Now" a look and see if it's fool me twice or as refreshing as a Danny Treljo taco, we discuss Disney's move to put Mulan on Demand at a Premium price, and Ethan tries to get us to care about Tron 3 (It's not working).

So, catch up on some great Disney content and then join the conversation (@talkthemickey), Instagram (@talkingthemickey), or on our Facebook page (@talkingthemickey).  If you comment, you may end up among our 'shoutouts of the week.'

While you're at it,  why not leave a review for us on Apple Podcasts and make us feel pretty dang special after all?  5 stars of special if you're so inclined.

Ep 28 - Blackbeard's Ghost & Muppets Now (with Debbie)06 Aug 202001:38:36

Do you want the one dollar version or the five dollar special?  We're back after a long 10 day absence to take the good ship Disney Plus for a jaunt around the harbour.   Join your favourite Disney Podcasting team - Ellie, Ethan, and Ian – alongside our stowaway, Debbie,, as we analyse Blackbeard's Ghost.  Ellie picks on the special effects, Ethan tries to get his kitten to co-operate, Ian points out the failings in the film's internal logic (there were plenty) and Debbie shares some lovely childhood memories about the film before we all agree that the track meet is a very special 20 minutes of Disney magic.

We also talk about the first episode of the Disney Plus original series "Muppets Now" and determine if it was "Muppets, Wow!" or "Muppets, Ow!" and Ethan provides an update on a bevy of news from a socially distanced Comic Con.

So, catch up on some great Disney content and then join the conversation (@talkthemickey), Instagram (@talkingthemickey), or on our Facebook page (@talkingthemickey).  If you comment, you may end up among our 'shoutouts of the week.'

Ep 27 - Toy Story (Crossover Episode with Best Film Ever)28 Jul 202001:59:38

To infinity and beyond!  Catch us on a very exciting crossover episode this week as the TTM & BFE teams combine to provide a deep dive into the toy box for the 25th birthday of Toy Story later this year.   Join your favourite Disney Podcasting team - Ellie, Ethan, and Ian – as and our our party guest from Best Film Ever, Liam, as we analyse a film that doesn't feel anywhere near 25 years old (according to Ian & Liam anyways). We've all got our moving buddies and we're headed to Pizza Planet (only 1 toy allowed).  It's an existentially critical 27th episode as we discuss:

  • What happens when pitch meetings go badly at Walt Disney Studios
  • Which actor declared his character to be a jerk early on during recording sessions
  • The three departments of a film's production cycle
  • At what point are toys born?  When do they receive consciousness?
  • Someone gets way too excited about a countdown from 10
  • Did Pixar get too dark in some of the sequences from this film?
  • Does Woody forgive the rest of the gang too easily?
  • Ian's hatred for Tim Allen that was put to the test during the screening of this film

Ep 26 - The Adventures of Ichabod & Mr. Toad23 Jul 202001:35:31

Can a film be greater than the sum of its parts?  Not this week.  This week, nobody got to pick as the executive producer determined that it was time for another package film - and we are savage.  Ellie, Ethan, and Ian try to overcome Georgia's absence without losing our respective heads by discussing the 11 year journey to move Wind in the Willows from buying the rights to hitting the screen, the screen animators strike of 1949, we struggle to name more than 1 likeable character in 2 different segments, and Ellie admits she's addicted to nostalgia while Ethan suggests that Toad might be addicted to something else.

Ep 25 - The Incredibles16 Jul 202001:51:06

Syndrome says that if everyone is super then no-one is super. How does this apply to Pixar’s track record of making super high quality films? This week, we’ve actually let Ethan pick a film again after his debacle with “The Wild” and it’s a good one in “The Incredibles.”  Ellie, Georgia, Ethan, and Ian discuss Pixar’s first all-human narrative.   Ethan regales us with tales from context corner and the semi-autobiographical nature of Brad Bird’s screenplay, we debate the internal logic of running back into a burning building, ask whether Frozone ever needs to urinate or if freezing things does the trick, we take a look at the gender politics behind the weight gain behind Mr and Mrs Incredible, Georgia just wants to know how the mask physics work while Ian maintains that Syndrome is a much more sympathetic villain than he's made out to be.

Ep 24 - Frozen 2 (and Peter Pan Fantasy Casting)09 Jul 202001:50:10

They say that some things never change but this week we're journeying into the unknown with Elsa, Anna, and a bunch of characters who mattered in Frozen 1 but largely stand around this time in Frozen 2.  This week's pick does some serious retconning of the Frozen Universe and we try to keep track of a whole new mythology in this financial boondoggle of a sequel.   Ellie,  Georgia,  Ethan, and Ian ask how can Anna's character be so on the nose with her sister but completely different around KrIstoff?   If the fire spirit can't be over fired or the wind spirit can't be over winded, how can Elsa be over frozen?  Finally, how much of this film was just highlight packages of Frozen 1?  We also went around the table (virtually), and gave our thoughts on who should be cast in the upcoming live adaptation of Peter Pan, now that Jude Law has signed on.  Catch up on some great Disney content and then join the conversation (@talkthemickey), Instagram (@talkingthemickey), or on our BRAND NEW Facebook page (@talkingthemickey).

Ep 23 - Hamilton04 Jul 202003:01:57

With Hamilton dropping on Disney Plus on July 3rd, the team at Talking the Mickey weren’t going to throw away our shot to drop a review in time for July 4th - it felt quite apropos, after all. Ellie, Georgia, Ethan, and Ian discuss the challenges – and benefits – of the live musical experience vs the filmed approach, discuss our own suppositions about what Hamilton had in store for us, consider what other chart-topping song King George’s refrain reminded us of, and determine if there’s room for a retelling of Aaron Burr’s story with an all Kiwi cast. Come join a New Zealander, 2 Brits, and a Canadian talk about one of American’s founding fathers and then join the conversation on Twitter (@talkthemickey), Instagram (@talkingthemickey), or on our new Facebook page (@talkingthemickey) and have your comments featured on next week’s episode on Frozen 2.

Ep 22 - The Princess and the Frog02 Jul 202002:08:14

This week we are Film Stories' reigning British Film Podcast of the Week and to celebrate we're "Goin' Down The Bayou' as Georgia's choice takes us to Mardi Gras and the city of New Orleans with "The Princess and the Frog."  Ellie,  Georgia,  Ethan, and Ian discuss a lot of people getting angry over a theme-park ride being rebranded, Ethan shares a personal story or two about his own experiences with the film during a difficult time in his life, Ellie is concerned at Lottie's attitude towards men, Georgia's bringing us Context Corner this week, and Ian's convinced every song in this 'glorified rom-com' (his words) is some sort of Jungle Book rip-off - with the exception of "Friends on the Other Side" which sounded a little too Aladdin for his taste.  Catch up on some great Disney content and then join the conversation (@talkthemickey), Instagram (@talkingthemickey), or on our new Facebook page (@talkingthemickey).

Ep 21 - Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey25 Jun 202001:51:32

It's time to go on an Incredible Journey.  Ellie's moves us up 1 year from Newsies into 1993 with Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey (itself a remake of a 1963 film)   Ellie,  Georgia,  Ethan, and Ian debate the merits of 2D animation vs voiceover and live animals, we go into great detail on the lengths the production team went to in order to ensure animal safety.  We all get a little emotional about the thoughts our respective pets may have in their heads and we deduce that Ethan might just be a soulless robot (but he likes cats - take that all you cat people).  Catch up on some great Disney content and then join the conversation (@talkthemickey), Instagram (@talkingthemickey), or on our new Facebook page (@talkingthemickey).

We've also got some MASSIVE news to share about the podcast. So listen up.

Ep 20 - Newsies (and Hercules Fantasy Casting)18 Jun 202002:03:04

Headlines don't sell papes; Newsies sell papes!  It's a shame Newsies didn't sell many cinema tickets.  Ian's pick brings us back to 1992 and the first time most of us saw Christian Bale on our screens in the role of Jack Kelly in Newsies   Ellie,  Georgia,  Ethan, and Ian ask how Bill Pullman's character is able to spread the word of the Newsies strike through his own newspaper - are his Newsies not on strike?  Is Oscar Winner Robert Duvall the worst thing about this film and was Razzie (and Oscar) winner Alan Menken unfairly criticised for a pretty good soundtrack.  Did we ever find out what borough Spot Conlon was from and finally, did Davey even really learn how to be a Newsie on his half a day on the job?  We also went around the table (virtually), and gave our thoughts on who should be cast in the upcoming live adaptation of Hercules.  Catch up on some great Disney content and then join the conversation (@talkthemickey), Instagram (@talkingthemickey), or on our BRAND NEW Facebook page (@talkingthemickey).

  • the ethics of voice modulation
  • the last week in the streaming wars
  • And are we heading towards a second season of Obi-Wan Kenobi?
Ep 19 - The Wild11 Jun 202001:44:59

Sometimes the worst films make for the best episodes.  Ethan's pick brings us the 2006 computer-animated debacle that was "The Wild".   Ellie,  Georgia,  Ethan, and Ian debate why the film wanted to keep explicitly reminding us of much better Disney properties,  discuss the shameful Canadiana that was forced to the audience throughout the first act, consider why their were so many characters stuffed into this film if none of them were going to be developed or really have an arc, and ask if anyone cared about Ryan at any point in the film.  Also, who names a Lion cub "Ryan"???  Throw on Disney Plus, catch up on some great Disney content (or this film) and then join the conversation on Twitter  (@talkthemickey), Instagram (@talkingthemickey), or on our BRAND NEW Facebook page (@talkingthemickey).

Also, a massive thanks to our friends over at Feedspot who informed  us that they have included us in their "Top 60 Disney Podcasts You Must  Follow in 2020" rankings where we currently sit at #13 (and I believe  hold the ranking of the top film review Disney podcast in that list).   If you've got a podcast to promote, why not head over to Feedspot and  see how they can help you.  Catch our ranking at  https://blog.feedspot.com/disney_podcasts

Ep 18 - Alice in Wonderland (1951)04 Jun 202001:56:06

Well I'm never eating Oysters again and you're late for a very important date with your favourite Disney themed podcast's review of Alice in Wonderland on our communal unbirthdays.  Georgia's pick brings us the Lewis Carroll literary classic brought to life through the animated genius of the Walt Disney company.   Ellie,  Georgia,  Ethan, and Ian debate at length the concept of a clever metaphor that's lost on the target audience, whether too many chefs in the kitchen did spoil the broth, what song needed to be substituted because Kathryn Beaumont wasn't that deft with it, is the Queen of Hearts a good villain or merely an iconic villain, and if everything is nonsense, can there be any substance to the film?  Throw on Disney Plus, catch up on some great Disney content and then join the conversation on Twitter (@talkthemickey), Instagram (@talkingthemickey), or on our BRAND NEW Facebook page (@talkingthemickey).

Ep 17 - Brave29 May 202001:57:40

This one's for all the gingers out there as Ellie's pick has us reviewing our 2nd Pixar film to this point in Brave   Ellie,  Georgia, Ethan, and Ian debate at length the importance of a fishing montage when the goal of the film is to prevent someone being a bear long-term, why is the idea of a mother-daughter relationship arc such a novel idea for a Disney film,  was Brave (the Oscar winner) even the best animated film Disney put out this year?  Which other Disney property made it onto the Scottish registry of Tartans over fifty years ago?  And what is with all the talk about destiny, fate, and choosing your path?  Throw on some Disney  Plus, catch up on some great Disney content and then join the  conversation on Twitter (@talkthemickey) or Instagram  (@talkingthemickey).

Ep 16 - One Hundred and One Dalmatians23 May 202001:55:39

Is Cruella de Ville actually a great villain or just the benefector of excellent character design and an iconic song?  That's the question we undertake this week as Ian's pick has us counting spots, literally.   Ellie,  Georgia, Ethan, and Ian debate the relative distance of London to Suffolk, why half the film is us watching dogs watching television, how can a variety of animals understand the twilight bark but only the dogs can respond?  Is Jasper underrated as a disney villain in his own right?  And what is Roger's wife's name anyways?  Throw on some Disney Plus, catch up on some great  Disney content and then join the conversation on Twitter (@talkthemickey) or Instagram (@talkingthemickey).

Ep 15 - The Hunchback of Notre Dame 16 May 202002:06:00

Everything goin' Topsy Turvy this week as someone suggests Phoebus is 'just a discount Flynn Rider!'  Come join the podcast that puts the  Plus in Disney Plus, Talking The Mickey as Ethan's pick has us celebrating the Festival of Fools with Esmerelda, Quasimodo, Belle's Dad, and some guy trying to sell us Hot & Cool Hamburgers from McDonalds.   Ellie,  Georgia, Ethan, Ian, and Liam debate how dark is too dark for a Disney film, discuss why Frollo is mentioned enough when we consider the great pantheon of Disney villains, consider whether the gargoyles are actually alive or do they just exist in Quasi's mind, and ask ourselves if leaning so heavily into sitcom culture was the right feel for this film,   Throw on some Disney Plus, catch up on some great Disney  content and then join the conversation on Twitter (@talkthemickey) or Instagram (@talkingthemickey).

Ep 14 - Star Wars (A New Hope)08 May 202002:04:52

Ep 13 - Tinker Bell06 May 202001:49:45

Come join the podcast that puts the Plus in Disney Plus, Talking  The Mickey. as we stretch our wings in reviewing the 2008 birth of a Disney Fairies division, Tinker Bell.  Georgia's choice,  brings us to Pixie Hollow and a time long before the Darling children made their way to Never Land.    Ellie, Georgia, Ethan, and Ian discuss how and why Disney went in a direction to bump Tinker Bell up to main character status, consider if she's a likeable character or a bad Egg, discover some serious casting power in players of Tinker's crew and learn about the financial boon that this direct-to-DVD series became for the House of Mouse.  Throw on some Disney Plus, and  catch up on some great Disney content and then join the conversation on Twitter (@talkthemickey) or Instagram (@talkingthemickey).

Ep 12 - Mary Poppins02 May 202002:05:44

Step In Time to the podcast that puts the Plus in Disney Plus, Talking The Mickey. This week, Ellie's choice,  brings us to Edwardian England and the 'Age of Men' (at least according to Mr. Banks), in Mary Poppins.   Ellie, Georgia, Ethan, and Ian discuss the turbulent relationship between P.L. Travers and the Walt Disney company, consider which characters may be sociopathic, learn about a tapestry of casting considerations, and debate the quality (and difficulty) of some of the accents in the only Disney film to be nominated for Best Picture in Walt's lifetime.  Throw on some Disney Plus, and  catch up on some great Disney content and then join the conversation on Twitter (@talkthemickey) or Instagram (@talkingthemickey).

Ep 11 - Aladdin (1992)28 Apr 202002:15:13

10,000 years may give you such a crick in the neck but our Deep Dive this week will make you feel like a prince.  This week, Ian's choice, brings us to the ancient (post-apocalyptic?) land of Agrabah where we thoroughly examine Aladdin.   Ellie, Georgia, Ethan, and Ian discuss the turbulent development process which culiminated in the infamous Black Friday, Disney's treatment of its biggest star in Robin Williams, the ever-changing rules regarding the Genie's powers and if there are three different characters angling for the role of 'silent sidekick', which one's the cutest?  Throw on some Disney Plus, and  catch up on some  great Disney contet and  then join our conversation on  Twitter  (@talkthemickey) or Instagram  (@talkingthemickey).

Ep 10 - Treasure Planet20 Apr 202001:49:11

If you thought there was a rant in Lady and The Tramp, hold our tea!  This week we discuss the reimagining of Treasure Island in Space (a harder moniker to remember than you may think) with Treasure Planet.   Ellie, Georgia, Liam, and  Ian discuss the 70/30 rule, unfortunate post-millenium haircuts, how Treasure Planet may be the biggest financial blunder in Disney animation history, and how close it came to a truly bizarre sequel taking place.  Throw on some Disney Plus, and catch up on some  great Disney contet and  then join our conversation on Twitter  (@talkthemickey) or Instagram  (@talkingwithmickey).

Ep 09 - Wreck-It Ralph15 Apr 202001:40:16

Just because you are a 'bad guy' doesn't mean that you are a bad guy.  Wise words from the Russian who likes to crack men's skulls between his thights.  From the  podcast that puts the plus in Disney Plus,  Georgia's selection brings us into the world of our favourite video games (from today and yesterday) with 'Wreck-It Ralph.'  We find ourselves disussing how a film as fan-servicey as this on the surface could ask such mature questions about happiness, fulifilment, depression, and respect.  We  consider if Ralph might just be the best developed character in the history of Disney or whether Venellope ever had a redeeming moment.  Also, is there anything Alan Tudyk can't do?  Throw on some Disney Plus,  and catch up on some  great Disney  content  and then join our  conversation on Twitter (@talkthemickey) or Instagram (@talkingwithmickey).  Why not throw a review request our way?  Who knows, maybe your recommendation will spur our next review.

Ep 08 - The Sword In The Stone12 Apr 202001:38:46

If Merlin felt the 20th century was a 'modern mess' what would he make of life in 2020?  From the  podcast that puts the plus in Disney Plus, Ellie's selection brings us back home to Merry Old England with 'The Sword in the Stone.'  We find ourselves disussing yet another problem with casting and actors maturing over the process of production; we consider which famous person was Merlin's characteristics allegedly based on and we answer the immortal question: who was more memorable in this film, Madam Mim or the Lady Squirrels?  Throw on some Disney Plus, and catch up on some  great Disney  content  and then join our conversation on Twitter (@talkthemickey) or Instagram  (@talkingwithmickey).  Why not throw a review request our way?  Who  knows, maybe your recommendation will spur our next review.

Ep 07 - Cool Runnings (with Ethan)09 Apr 202001:25:53

Feel the rhythm, feel the rhyme, get on up, it's podcast time!  From the podcast that puts the plus in Disney Plus, Ian's selection brings us all the way to the frigid climates of Canada in mid-February with Cool Runnings.  We find ourselves disussing Disney's initial casting preferences.  Which one line was the only one to remain after extensive re-writes, we discuss the legacy of Canada's own John Candy, and find out which actor rose from being hired just to read the lines to others auditioning for the film to ultimately being cast and stealing the show. Throw on some Disney Plus, and catch up on some  great Disney  content and then join our conversation on Twitter (@talkthemickey) or Instagram (@talkingwithmickey).  Why not throw a review request our way?  Who knows, maybe your recommendation will spur our next review.

Ep 06 - Coco (with Ethan)09 Apr 202001:47:04

From the podcast that puts the plus in Disney Plus, an audience selection  brings us our newest film in the review library to this point (and our first Pixar review),  Coco.  We find ourselves disussing the intricacies of the Pixar team; we learn about how the director of Coco was nervous to set the project in Mexico for fear of not doing another culture's representation justice, and discuss what the impact is of a character's death on those watching the film.  Throw on some Disney Plus, and catch up on some  great Disney  contet  and  then join our conversation on Twitter (@talkthemickey) or Instagram  (@talkingwithmickey).  Why not throw a review request our way?  Who knows, maybe your recommendation will spur our next review.

Ep 05 - The Three Caballeros02 Apr 202001:29:07

From the podcast that puts the plus in Disney Plus, Georgia's selection brings us our oldest film in the review library to this point (again), The Three Caballeros.  We find ourselves disussing how important story is to a piece of art.  We learn about how politics and animation were used together as part of the American Goodwill movement of the FDR government and who decided that Donald Duck was the symbol of Americana?  Throw on some Disney Plus, and catch up on some  great Disney  contet and  then join our conversation on Twitter (@talkthemickey) or Instagram (@talkingwithmickey).

Ep 04 - Lady and the Tramp01 Apr 202001:32:59

Ellie's choice brings us our oldest film in the review library to this point, Lady and the Tramp.  We find ourselves disussing what exactly makes the essence of story and debate whether this should have been shelved for another 18 years.  We find ourselves resorting to labels of 'dog people' and 'cat people' while asking if the film wants us to 'hate people.'  We also learn which iconic scene Walt Disney wanted out of the film and which elements of the story were ripped from the pages of real life. Throw on some Disney Plus, and catch up on some  great Disney contet and  then join our conversation on Twitter  (@talkthemickey) or Instagram (@talkingwithmickey).

Ep 03 - Pocohontas (with Liam)30 Mar 202001:22:51

For the first time, Liam joins the Podcast and brings us the 1995 classic, Pocohontas.  It's another week where we discuss big topics like reperesentation, gender roles, and what makes an appropriate narrative to retell for a family audience.  Moreover, Ellie, Georgia, Liam, and Ian consider how much creative license is appropriate with a story based in historical fact before wondering why Mel Gibson didn't even try an English accent at all.  Throw on some Disney Plus, and catch up on some great Disney contet and  then join our conversation on Twitter (@talkthemickey) or Instagram  (@talkingwithmickey) and we'll give you a warm, English welcome - sadly without the gift baskets.

Ep 02 - Mulan27 Mar 202001:32:18

Li Shang promises that he'll make a man out of Mulan.  Without the long-anticipated (by some) live-action remake, we're all revisiting the 1998 release of animated verison of Mulan.  Questions of gender roles and family roles are explored by Ellie, Georgia, and Ian as we try to upack if the values it upholds are still all that progressive for a 2020 audience.  Throw on some Disney Plus, and catch up on some great Disney contet and then join our conversation on Twitter (@talkthemickey) or Instagram (@talkingwithmickey) or else it'll be dishonour on you, dishonour on your family, and dishonour on your cow.
