He joined leading City firm Cazenove in 1985, serving as its first Chief Executive from 2001 until 2008. He played a critical role in the firm's transformation from a private stockbroking partnership into a modern investment bank as part of the American giant J.P. Morgan. His book ‘Blue Blood’ provides a firsthand account of managing the firm during this period.

Since leaving Cazenove, Robert has had a portfolio career serving as an advisor to individuals and boards – mainly within financial services. He is currently Chair of the Board at Marex, a diversified, global financial services platform.

He is one of the UK’s most successful entrepreneurs. He founded Intercapital in 1986, a firm which soon became one of the world's largest inter-dealer brokers.

In 1998, Intercapital merged with EXCO, and a year later with Garban plc, forming ICAP – with Michael as CEO. ICAP joined the FTSE 100 in 2006, and in 2016 sold its hybrid voice broking business. This led to the formation of NEX Group, again with Michael as CEO. In 2018, CME Group acquired NEX, and Michael became a director and Special Adviser at CME.
