On Wednesday after practice at Mellencamp Pavilion (thanks to the rain) the media caught up with four players: sophomore second baseman Jasen Oliver, freshman outfielder Hogan Denny, senior left-handed pitcher Ryan Kraft, and redshirt sophomore right-handed pitcher Jacob Vogel. Head Coach Jeff Mercer wrapped up the session shedding more light on the pitching expectations for 2025. Within the warm confines of Mellencamp Pavillion the program officially opened up the 2025 practice season. After practice concluded four players and head coach Jeff Mercer met with the media. The players were senior transfer pitcher Cole Gilley, junior pitcher Aydan Decker-Petty, consensus pre-season All-American junior outfielder Devin Taylor, and senior catcher Jake Stadler. Media meets with Decker-Petty, Oliver, and Mercer following 8-4 to clinch the Michigan series in the season finale By Carl James @jovian34 May 18th, 2024 Indiana pitchers struck out 17 Wolverines and the bats ripped five homers on the way to 8-4 victory on Friday night. Righty sophomore Aydan Decker-Petty struck out 8 in 3.1 innings of work and freshman second baseman Jasen Oliver hit two long balls. The media met with Decker-Petty, Oliver, and head coach Jeff Mercer following the game. Aydan Decker-Petty and Jasen Oliver Indiana next plays Tuesday at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, Nebraska in the B1G Tournament. The Hoosiers are the number 3-seed in the tournament and will face the 6-seed, either Purdue or Ohio State, depending on the results of Saturday's action. By Carl James @jovian34 May 16th, 2024 Indiana scored just two runs in its third consecutive game on Thursday afternoon before exploding for 11 runs in a nightcap they ran away with to start the Michigan series with a doubleheader split. In the second game Julian Tonghini pitched 4 innings striking out 8 Wolverines. Brock Tibbitts got on base four times, including two hits and driving in a run. Carl, Cass, and Chris discuss a crazy comeback series win in West Lafayette By Carl James @jovian34 May 6th, 2024; WIUX radio call intro by Ben Haller; Probability overlay from 6-4-3 Charts and D1Baseball.com The Indiana University Baseball team accomplished something that has eluded the program since 2002 - they won a weekend series in West Lafayette. It is also the first road series victory in the series for either team since the opening of Alexander and Bart Kaufman Fields in 2013. It sure wasn’t easy for the Hoosiers. Indiana made four errors and two costly base running mistakes on the way to a 7-4 Friday night defeat. On Saturday and Sunday the Hoosiers failed to score at all in the first six innings of either game. On Saturday, Purdue starter Luke Wagner was excellent, giving up only one hit and facing the minimum, thanks to a double play through six innings. The Hoosiers ran him after two hits in the seventh and scored 6 in that inning including a Carter Mathison three-run blast. The pitching duo of Connor Foley and Ty Bothwell were back and held Purdue to just two runs on the day as the Hoosiers ran away with the game 10-2. On Sunday the Hoosiers again scored in only the seventh and ninth innings, but it was much closer. Indiana was crushing the ball all day but couldn’t seem to find outfield grass. Brock Tibbitts and Carter Mathison finally broke through with back to back hits in the ninth, opening the flood gates of three walks, and infield hit and an error to take the lead. Redshirt freshman pitcher Jacob Vogel pitched the final 4.0 scoreless innings to seal the win. Carl, Cass, and Chris discuss a home series sweep over the Scarlet Knights By Carl James @jovian34 May 3rd, 2024 The Indiana University Baseball team went 3-0, sweeping Rutgers at the Bart this past weekend. This is the second series sweep for the Hoosiers this season, the first at home and the first in conference play. Oh.. and the Hoosiers did this all without the services of ace starter Connor Foley or Brock Tibbitts. Friday the Hoosiers threw a trio of bullpen arms for three innings each who held a very potent Rutgers offense to three runs. Brandon Keyster, Julian Tonghini, and Brayden Risedorph held the Scarlet Knights at bay while Joey Brenczewski, Cal Sefcik, and Nick Mitchell did damage at the plate against a legit Friday night starter to give the Hoosiers an 8-3 win. Saturday the Hoosiers clinched their fourth straight conference series win. Devin Taylor racked up 11 total bases and the Hoosier offense kept the Hoosiers ahead when Ty Bothwell handed the ball to Drew Buhr who was lights out for 5 innings. Sunday, the Hoosiers swept the series in run-rule fashion needing only two pitchers with Aydan Decker-Petty carrying a bulk of the workload in the win. Taylor, Sefcik, and Mitchell all hit long balls along with Tyler Cerny hitting a grand slam and Carter Mathison hitting his 40th home run as a Hoosier. Media meets with Taylor, Decker-Petty, and Mercer following 18-6 win at home on Sunday to sweep the Rutgers series By Carl James @jovian34 April 28th, 2024 Indiana did the one thing that they struggled with on Saturday, they did damage right after a mid-inning pitching change and cashed in big on RBI opportunities. Devin Taylor continued his torrid weekend going 2 for 4 with a double and a homer. Aydan Decker-Petty earned the win in 4.2 innings allowing no hits, earned runs, or walks. Media meets with Buhr, Mitchell, and Mercer following 12-6 series clinching win at home on Saturday By Carl James @jovian34 April 28th, 2024 Indiana bats came alive against a quintet of Rutgers pitchers to clinch a fourth straight B1G series victory on Saturday. Drew Buhr got the win on the mound with 5.0 innings of scoreless relief. Devin Taylor had two home runs and a triple from the lead-off spot. Both teams played stellar defense, including right fielder Nick Mitchell who made a leaping grab up against the right field wall in the top of the seventh inning. Media meets with Brenczewski, Tonghini, and Mercer following 8-3 win at home on Friday By Carl James @jovian34 April 27th, 2024 With Connor Foley still not ready to go from injury, Indiana had a bullpen day against Rutgers ace Justin Sinibaldi. A trio of bullpen arms put combined to put up ace numbers with 3.0 innings of work each, while the Hoosier hitters worked Sinibaldi, lead by Joey Brenczewski who went 2 for 4 with a three-run homer in the first inning. Julian Tonghini allowed no runs in his three innings of work, and that includes not allowing an inherited runner to score from third with no one out in the fourth inning. Carl, Cass, and Chris discuss a road series win over Minnesota and a midweek tie By Carl James @jovian34 April 25th, 2024 The Indiana University Baseball team won it’s third straight B1G series this past weekend in Minneapolis. Ty Bothwell was electric as Indiana cruised to victory in the series opener on Saturday. Friday’s freeze-out turned Sunday into a double header. The first game was a disaster for the Hoosiers who struggled in most facets of the game and suffered their 4th run-rule style loss of the season.  The Hoosiers had very short memories as they jumped out to a three-run lead on the third batter of the second game and controlled the game the rest of the way. Tuesday’s anticipated in-state matchup on the big stage of Victory Field in Indianapolis was unfortunately washed out by rain. The game moved to Wednesday in Muncie. The Hoosiers were down 7-1 top of the 8th. 3 runs in the 8th and 9th forced extra innings. No one scored the rest of the way and the game was called a tie for darkness after 12 innings. Carl, Cass, and Chris discuss comeback series win over Penn State By Carl James @jovian34 April 17th, 2024 The Indiana University Baseball team was staring another home series defeat in the eyes in the middle of the second inning on Saturday. Having been blown out on Friday, the Nittany Lions had just lit up Connor Foley for 8 runs and the Hoosier ace was already out of the game. Then a historic comeback ensued capped with Devin Taylor taking home on a wild pitch to give the Hoosiers a 10-9 victory. A dominant win on Sunday clinched the series. However a mid-week setback against Evansville has the Hoosier RPI down to 80th in the country. Media meets with Mercer following 5-4 midweek loss at home on Tuesday By Carl James @jovian34 April 17th, 2024 Last night Indiana had a relatively successful staff day on the mound, holding a veteran Evansville hitting group to just 5 runs, but head coach Jeff Mercer was not pleased with the opportunities the Hoosier bats failed to capitalize on in the middle innings. By Carl James @jovian34 April 13th, 2024 Indiana staged their biggest comeback victory in 14 years, turning an 8-0 second inning deficit into a 10-9 walk-off win. Drew Buhr pitched 4.1 shutout innings in the middle of the game striking out 8. Tyler Cerny's third hit tied the game. Andrew Wiggins drove in three runs, going 2-3 and getting on base three times. Four Hoosiers had multi-hit days including Devin Taylor who went 2 for 5 on the day with a home run and three runs batted in. Freshman second baseman Jasen Oliver had a career day going 4 for 5 with two home runs. The media met with Oliver, Rybarczyk, and head coach Jeff Mercer following the contest. Jasen Oliver and Ty Rybarczyk Indiana next travels to Indianapolis to start a four-game series with Butler.
