Jon Patch and crew talk to author Cat Warren about her new book, What the Dog Knows. Cat Warren is a university professor and former journalist with an admittedly odd hobby: She and her German shepherd have spent the last seven years searching for the dead. Solo is a cadaver dog. What started as a way to harness Solo’s unruly energy and enthusiasm soon became a calling that introduced Warren to the hidden and fascinating universe of working dogs, their handlers, and their trainers.

Solo has a fine nose and knows how to use it, but he’s only one of many thousands of working dogs all over the United States and beyond. In What the Dog Knows, Warren uses her ongoing work with Solo as a way to explore a captivating field that includes cadaver dogs, drug- and bomb-detecting K9s, tracking and apprehension dog- even dogs who can locate unmarked graves of Civil War soldiers and help find drowning victims more than two hundred feet below the surface of a lake

Guy Gilchrist, the cartoonist who took over the famed comic strip Nancy in 1995, is celebrating the character’s 80th year in existence since first being introduced on January 2, 1933, as Fritzi’s niece, Nancy. Nancy, a slightly chubby and precocious eight-year-old, first appeared in the strip Fritzi Ritz about the airheaded flapper title character and continues in 2013 as an American daily and Sunday comic strip. Poochie is Nancy's rescue dog. In current strips, Nancy also has a cat named Rocky and a goldfish called Goldie.

Jon welcomes film star, Tippi Hedren, most well-known for her roles in two Alfred Hitchcock films, The Birds and Marnie, and her extensive efforts in animal rescue at Shambala Preserve, an 80-acre wildlife habitat which she founded in 1983.

Tippi began her long love affair with wild animals in 1969 while doing a film, Satan's Harvest, in Africa. She "met" a mellow lion, and much of her life since then has been devoted to the big cats. Deeply involved with international conservation groups to save wildlife, and an outspoken voice against cruelty to animals, both wild and domestic, she's a board member of "The Wildlife Safari", founded by her friend, Frank Hart, in Winston, Oregon. She also served on the board of "The Elsa Wild Animal Appeal" founded by her friend, the late Joy Adamson.

Jon Patch welcomes Janice Stillman, editor of The Old Farmer's Almanac. When Janice Stillman joined The Old Farmer's Almanac as Editor in 2000, she made history. Janice is not only the 13th editor in the Almanac's history but also the first female to hold the title.

In her role as Editor, Janice oversees the development of the annual publication, working closely with writers and other editors to develop new and interesting feature content. She also has a hand in the preparation and production of the seasonal All-Seasons Garden Guide, The Old Farmer's Almanac for Kids, and the Almanac's line of calendars.
