Mount at the double: United are off to Bilbao09 May 202500:44:07

Mason Mount had his best moment in his injury-hit United career so far and then twenty minutes later he had an even better one as Ruben Amorim's men recovered from a rocky start to, eventually, cruise into the Europa League final.

Low on confidence and struggling to get out of their own third, it took a triple sub from the manager to liven up the performance, but the impact was almost instantaneous. Bookended by the two Mount goals, Casemiro and Rasmus Hojlund also scored, making it a remarkable 7-1 on aggregate against an accomplished Athletic Club.

So it's another trip to Bilbao, this time to face Tottenham on May 21st; an opponent United haven't beaten since October 2022. Will it play out as a Premier League fixture might? We're not so sure. West Ham probably will on Sunday, though.

Brentford loss forgotten as Bilbao beckons05 May 202500:50:36

Manchester United's terrible run of form in the Premier League continued at Brentford as a VERY youthful side lost 4-3. Alejandro Garnacho had a good day, as did Mason Mount, but it's all a bit 'Groundhog Day' and we're not too perturbed by the result.

We will, however, be disconsolate if Amorim's men are not able to defend their three goal lead going into the second leg of the Europa League semi-final against Athletic Club.

Champions League football is the prize, of course. Manchester United's women achieved that at City's expense with a battling draw in the Manchester derby at Old Trafford.

Lyon draw 'best result of season' despite Onana errors11 Apr 202500:46:21

After Joshua Zirkzee nodded home from a magnificent lifted pass by Bruno, giving Manchester United the lead in Lyon with moments left, we began putting together a triumphant podcast.

Unfortunately, there was still time in the Europa League quarter final first leg for Andre Onana to concede; all this coming after a war of words with Nemanja Matic and a bad first-half error to gift Thiago Almada the opening goal.

Judging by Ruben Amorim's comments, there's a non-zero chance Altay Bayindir will start the game at Newcastle. More importantly, there's a pretty good chance Manchester United will progress to the Europa League semi-final stage.

The Rise of Garnacho & Mayor Andy Burnham on Old Trafford Plans11 Mar 202400:44:55

Once again, it wasn't pretty, but Manchester United got the job done. two-nil at home with Alejandro Garnacho winning two first-half penalties, scored by different players.

The same questions remain, though. Casemiro's wasteful performance with the ball was the latest worrying midfield display and a huge performance was required by both centre halves, especially this season's unexpected hero Jonny Evans.

One person who didn't enjoy Saturday's game is Evertonian Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester. He joins us to discuss his role on a new task force of "decision makers" aiming to get the ball rolling on the redevelopment of Old Trafford and the surrounding area.

In Focus: Andre Onana, Women's Team, Everton07 Mar 202400:44:35

The team have relocated to Hotel Football, overlooking a very famous waterway, not that Ian Irving would know. We're going in-depth today, first on Andre Onana, the subject of 'cautious optimism' and a detailed profile by Andy Mitten and Carl Anka.

Slightly less optimistic, though not without hope, is the outlook for Manchester United's Women's team. They haven't been able to recreate the magic of last season having lost key players. Might they lose an even bigger asset in Mary Earps?

...and, with Everton coming to Old Trafford this weekend, there's no room for any sentiment with wins at an absolute premium.

Rashford thunderbolt not enough as City grind down United rearguard04 Mar 202400:39:14

Marcus Rashford would have been a huge talking point on Manchester derby day whatever happened after his op-ed for the Players Tribune. But, with less than ten minutes on the clock, he struck hope into red hearts with a lightning strike from thirty yards.

Throughout the first half Erik Ten Hag's innovative selection had Pep and City frustrated, albeit they used the lion's share of possession and territory to carve out some decent chances, one in particular...

But, Phil Foden turned the game on its head with two goals, and we were left wondering if this was a worrying indictment of United's status quo or if injuries were sufficient to justify the game-plan.

Relief at Casemiro cup winner ahead of derby29 Feb 202400:42:01

The awesome foursome are united once again on Monday morning after Manchester United scraped through to the FA Cup quarter finals at the City Ground.

Casemiro's late run, late in the game, was just enough to edge out relegation-threatened Forest in a "scrappy" encounter, and Erik Ten Hag was in a scrappy mood himself, defending Bruno (who assisted the goal with inventive free-kick delivery).

However, the Manchester Derby comes next and, with so many positional problems it's difficult to be bullish about this one. Will Andy's hearty rallying cry inspire the team, and the fans, to turn Manchester red again?

Fulham defeat puts pressure on Ten Hag26 Feb 202400:43:48

A Monday morning full-house from the podcast team, but there's precious little positivity on offer after Manchester United lost at home to Marco Silva's Fulham.

An injury to Rasmus Hojlund in training on Friday was a huge blow and it was alarming how much that unsettled the United attack. Our main concern, though, is how familiar many of the team's problems look.

Erik Ten Hag bemoaned the inability to sign an additional striker over the last two transfer windows, but there's no doubting the pressure on the manager now to produce results; starting with the FA Cup tie at Nottingham Forest on Wednesday.

Hojlund's on fire: Luton win becomes a grind19 Feb 202400:40:55

Manchester United won 2-1 at Luton's Kenilworth Road on Sunday night, and Andy Mitten was the happiest man in Bedfordshire.

It wasn't all plain sailing, despite Rasmus Hojlund setting new Premier League record's for United's fastest goal and their fastest two-goal lead away from home.

In fact, it became a bit of a chore. Partly because Luton showed their resilience, but also as a result of some tactical errors by senior pros. Thank Carrington, then, for Kobbie Mainoo who put in another calm, collected performance in midfield.

Ashworth targeted, plus exclusive interview: Director of Academy, Nick Cox15 Feb 202400:49:40

Manchester United have identified Newcastle's Dan Ashworth as their primary target for the position of Sporting Director. With investment from Sir Jim Ratcliffe's INEOS nearing approval, a period of dramatic change seems inevitable.

McTominay delivers huge three points at Villa12 Feb 202400:40:44

Ian, Carl, and Laurie are up bright and early on Monday morning in the hope that we can catch Andy Mitten has he passes through yet another airport. This time, it's India, where he enjoyed Manchester United's huge win at Villa in the company of a club legend.

Scott McTominay earned that win with another late goal, prompting a magnificent stat from Laurie. We get into his unique role and a renewed determination from the team that left Erik Ten Hag in bullish mood.

It was a great evening for Harry Maguire who dominated at set-pieces and Diogo Dalot had another good game as well. The pursuit of Champions League football feels like it's firmly back on track!

The Munich Air Disaster: The Legacy08 Feb 202400:43:47

It is sixty six years since the Munich Air Disaster and the death of Sir Bobby Charlton in October means all survivors of the crash have now passed away. Yet, in recent years attendance at services in Munich and at Old Trafford have grown. We discuss the crash's legacy, Daniel Taylor's articles on The Athletic, and how the anniversary is observed.

Robin van Persie returned to Carrington this week to fulfil a requirement of his UEFA Pro License with the Dutch FA. Yet, rumours of an "Arsenal snub" are exactly that, if not worse. We get into the clickbait industry that has been built on modern football's super-clubs.

Coming up next for Erik Ten Hag's team; a trip to Aston Villa. While recent performances have been encouraging, and quite a few fond memories at Villa Park, there's an air of concern with no margin for error in the Champions League race.

Worst Manchester derby ever? 'Huge' Lyon match preview07 Apr 202500:38:48

United and City played out a dull 0-0 draw at Old Trafford, with both sides lacking cutting edge. City, without the injured Haaland, couldn’t break down a well-organised defence. United will be happy to finish with a clean sheet, having conceded 17 in their nine previous league matches at Old Trafford under Ruben Amorim.

Garnacho was United’s main outlet but wasteful and a decent Zirkzee effort was well saved by Ederson. De Bruyne — set to leave City this summer — couldn’t provide a spark in a flat game.

City stay fifth in the table, United sit 13th, and both teams will just be glad not to have lost.

Also on the show, we preview the upcoming Europa League clash against Lyon with the help of Julien Laurens. Can United keep their season alive?

Hojlund/Garnacho deliver 'comfortable' home win; fingers crossed for Martinez04 Feb 202400:34:37

Recorded post-match at Old Trafford: Ian Irving, Andy Mitten, and Carl Anka are revelling in the slightly unfamiliar feeling of a comfortable win at home. What's more, it came against a pretty good West Ham team and, by a three goal margin.

Birthday boy Rasmus Hojlund got the scoring underway with the only goal of a "pleasantly boring" first half, and Alejandro Garnacho notched twice in the second period with a cheeky nod to Mohammed Kudus... or was it Ronaldo?!

The only dark cloud on the day was Lisandro Martinez's knee injury; we're hoping it's not as serious as the player's reaction might suggest.

Rashford back with a bang, but Kobbie steals the show02 Feb 202400:39:43

Ian, Carl, Andy, and Laurie expected to be talking about Marcus Rashford, hoped to be talking about a Manchester United win, but had no clue about the rest.

In the end, the evening belonged to Kobbie Mainoo. The 18 year-old scored his first senior goal for the club, a wonderful run and finish, and it was the last-minute winner in a seven-goal thriller!

All this came after Rashford was chosen to start the game, scored five minutes in, and set Ten Hag's men on the way to a dominant first half that should have seen the game done and dusted long before the dramatic finale.

Rashford absent as United ease past Newport28 Jan 202400:44:55

It wasn't all about Marcus Rashford this weekend, but his absence (through 'illness') did provide a medium sized distraction as Erik Ten Hag prepared his squad for a trip to fourth-tier Newport County. What next for the 26 year-old forward who shone last year but can't consistently reach the heights his talent promises?

In the end, the return of some key figures saw the Red Devils through fairly comfortably; although there were a few palpitations when Bryn Morries and Will Evans levelled the scores at 2-2. We discuss Altay Bayindir's competitive debut and Antony's first goal of the season.

Bristol City or Nottingham Forest await in the fifth round but, next up, a Wednesday EVENING kick-off at Wolverhampton, which usually proves "attritional".

Anthony Martial: Is this Goodbye?25 Jan 202400:41:58

We've got a full complement again as we dip briefly back into the Omar Berrada hire with The Athletic publishing fresh details on how the club got their man.

Anthony Martial has undergone groin surgery, which means he will be out for ten weeks. With his contract expiring at the end of the season, he may have played his last game in a spell that leaves us asking what could have been.

Manchester United have a game of football this weekend and everyone at Newport County is excited to be hosting the first ever competitive fixture between the two clubs, not least their manager Graham Coughlan, a huge United fan.

"Speaking of Pies!": INEOS team watch uninspiring routine win at Wigan09 Jan 202400:44:51

Erik Ten Hag picked the strongest Manchester United team available at Wigan in the FA Cup 3rd round and the result was never in doubt, but it still left Ian, Andy, and Laurie a bit cold.

We consider how Dave Brailsford and the INEOS contingent will have viewed the performance, and how they decided who would sit next to who, plus what's really going on with the Martial/Varane contract talks.

And there are a few of our usual asides, including Eastleigh's stadium spec, how Andy's uncle spearheaded the defence of their bench in their Premier League days, and the merits of a pie sandwich.

United and Garnacho frustrated as Elanga pace pays off for Forest02 Apr 202500:46:33

Nottingham Forest pulled off a league double against Manchester United for the first time since they were managed by Brian Clough, and it was United academy product Anthony Elanga who got the early goal.

Nuno's subsequent tactical switch and United's inability to break it down was as predictable as it was frustrating. Alejandro Garnacho showed his annoyance after several shots went astray, but a lack of goals from the whole team is becoming a big problem.

Despite that, there's confidence for the derby at Old Trafford with City still not themselves and Erling Haaland ruled out. Sadly, that will be the last derby of the season after the U18s lost to Aston Villa on penalties in the FA Youth Cup semi-final.

The End of the Year Show: Roll on 2024, ASAP!21 Dec 202300:40:17

Ian Irving is on great form, unlike last time, and the whole team are feeling pretty upbeat about Manchester United's prospects going into the new year.

Join us as we look back at twelve months that started so brightly, with Erik Ten Hag and his squad winning the Carabao Cup at Wembley, before subsiding badly going into the new season.

But, as we said, we are an optimistic lot, and we're expecting at least six points over Christmas, plenty of improvement from the men in 2024, and for newly crowned SPOTY Mary Earps to tell Arsenal what she told Jenni Hermoso after that penalty.

A creditable draw at Anfield... but how to capitalise?18 Dec 202300:34:20

Ian Irving and Andy Mitten are feeling a little tender this Monday morning. Fortunately, it's not because of another chastening defeat at Anfield!

Laurie Whitwell completes the trio as we dissect a resolute defensive performance from Erik Ten Hag's Manchester United, albeit one with very little attacking threat.

Given recent results, especially those at Liverpool, this can be viewed as a step in the right direction, but the next few steps are even more important for the future of this team and this manager.

Anger after another disastrous road-trip04 Dec 202300:46:15

It's a full house on the podcast as we dissect another awful performance away from home at a top-half Premier League side. A 1-0 defeat in Newcastle didn't tell the story with Ten Hag's men clearly second best throughout.

St James's Park has not been a happy hunting ground in recent years and the hosts were "good value" for their third consecutive win over Manchester United since the Carabao Cup final last February. Erik Ten Hag's in-game management is also looking shaky, especially when compared to last season.

United have been drawn away in the cup(!), but the next three games will be at home, starting with Wednesday night's visit of Chelsea. This time, the opposition are at least as chaotic, probably more, and it's very difficult to predict how this game will play out.

Are United underdogs for Forest trip?28 Mar 202500:50:13

A provocative title? Perhaps; in one sense, of course United (13th in the PL) are underdogs away at (3rd placed) Forest. But, perhaps it's not that straight-forward...

United's results were much improved in March, bringing a player of the month nomination for Bruno Fernandes and a manager of the month nod for Ruben Amorim. Meanwhile, Forest might be without Chris Wood, and maybe there's a distortion in media coverage of player form.

Prompted, in part, by comments from Sir Jim Ratcliffe, Laurie has been looking at player contracts to try and get a firmer grasp on the overall budget and how it might affect transfer business in the future.

The Good, the Bad, the Ten Hag Q&A13 Nov 202300:46:15

Victor Lindelof succeeded where the attackers struggled and provided a winner against Luton. Relief was the most obvious response but, wait, what's that? Manchester United are the most in-form team in the Premier League?!

The club's attention will now turn to Sir Bobby Charlton's funeral on Monday. Then, the following Sunday, the women will face Manchester City at Old Trafford with a big crowd expected.

Luton Town have never won at Old Trafford and they've never beaten Manchester United, not under that name at least. Surely, that's a much needed three points this weekend... isn't it!?

Maguire & Onana deliver vital win but derby day needs dramatic improvement26 Oct 202300:44:51

Today's podcast will be in three parts, with increasing numbers of people. In order of appearance, Ian Irving, Andy Mitten, Laurie Whitwell, AND FINALLY, Carl Anka.

Andre Onana's penalty save was the very last touch of the ball in a dramatic Old Trafford victory, one that reignites the team's hopes of Champions League qualification. Copenhagen's bilingual singing fans were a credit to their , showing great respect as the club said goodbye to Sir Bobby Charlton.

Everyone is hoping for the same on Sunday when Manchester City come calling. Hopes of a respectful reception for Sir Bobby should be the expectation, but whether we should be banking on a home win; that's another matter entirely.

In Memoriam: Sir Bobby Charlton23 Oct 202300:43:18

Ian Irving is joined by Andy Mitten and Laurie Whitwell as we share memories of the life of Sir Bobby Charlton, who died this week aged 86. A truly iconic figure, Charlton was a recognisable name the world over and he is one of only nine players in history to win a European Cup, a World Cup, and a Ballon d'Or.

Yet as a member of the Busby Babes, a survivor of the Munich air disaster, captain of the 1968 European Cup winners, and a club director for almost 40 years, he meant even more to Manchester United.

Tributes were paid before the Premier League win at Bramall Lane and more will follow when FC Copenhagen visit Old Trafford in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Details of how you can pay your respects to Sir Bobby can be found here.
