Pararescue: The Special Operations Job You've Never Heard Of | Real Truth About Jobs
27 Sep 2026
01:38:50
Brian Silva served as an Air Force Pararescueman (PJ aka Parajumper) from 2005 to 2018. Most people have never heard of the job. Everyone knows what a Navy SEAL is. Almost nobody knows that PJs exist, or that every single one of them is also a nationally registered paramedic trained to work combat trauma, mountain rescue, Arctic survival, and open-ocean recovery inside the same career.
Tales from the Shift goes deeper than any other show on jobs. Not just what the work looks like. What it actually does to the person doing it. The real cost, the real rewards, and the truth that usually stays behind closed doors.

Topics covered: Pararescue selection and training pipeline; water confidence and drown-proofing; SERE school and the POW phase; nationally registered paramedic certification; chest tubes and battlefield trauma procedures; fentanyl lollipops for combat pain management; mass-casualty triage; combat search and rescue missions; personnel recovery with Special Tactics units; working alongside Navy SEALs and Green Berets; physician assistant career after the military; PTSD and mental health in special operations; the Golden Hour and evacuation logistics; NASA astronaut recovery missions; the Iran hostage rescue mission
Common misconceptions addressed: - That Pararescuemen are just combat medics. PJs train across parachuting, diving, mountain rescue, Arctic operations, and jungle survival on top of advanced trauma medicine. - That special operators are supposed to just tough out trauma. Brian says trying to push through psychological and physical problems on his own made things worse, not better. - That battlefield pain medicine still means morphine ampoules like in old war movies. PJs now carry fentanyl lollipops instead. - That PTSD only counts if you deployed into direct combat. Brian says trauma is individual and can come from training or non-combat experiences too.

Probation Officer: What 12 Years Supervising Felons Actually Looks Like | Real Truth About Jobs
13 Sep 2026
01:23:42
Thomas Casey is a former Probation / Parole Officer in New Hampshire, a combined role most states split into two separate jobs. He supervised people out of state prison and people sentenced by the courts. Caseloads ran 100 to 200 people.
This episode covers search authority, parole board mechanics, how officers decide when a violation becomes a prison return, and the moment a law change forced Tom's office to send released sex offenders into the New Hampshire woods.
Topics covered: home visit procedure; search authority; probation vs parole; sex offender supervision; risk assessment; officer discretion; caseload management 100-200 cases; parole board; GPS electronic monitoring; interstate compact; domestic violence caseload; career path CO to PPO; district court prosecution
Common misconceptions addressed: - Probation and parole are the same thing. They are separate legal tracks handled differently by state. - A parole officer needs a police warrant to search a home. Supervision conditions may grant search authority directly. - High-risk classification always means a difficult case. Many high-risk individuals were among Tom's most cooperative. - PPO work is mostly arrests. Most is judgment, paperwork, and trying to keep someone on track before prison.

Race Car Driver Proves a Video Game Path to Real Motorsport Is Not a Fantasy | Truth About Jobs
30 Aug 2026
01:02:16
Suellio Almeida is a professional race car driver and racing coach based in Dubai. Before he ever sat in a real car, he built his technical foundation entirely in simulation: Gran Turismo, Assetto Corsa, and iRacing. He has completed over 60 race weekends in real life. He has never crashed.
This episode covers the full arc: how sim racing transfers to a real cockpit and where it falls short, what 63 degrees Celsius inside a race car does to your body, the neck-failure moment at 300 km/h that forced him to become an athlete, the Daytona 14-hour race where he nearly passed out and pulled himself out of the car, the championship final where a rival hired two pros to run him off the track, the five-year relationship that didn't survive the travel, and the burnout-and-depression year he pushed through while still doing 11 US trips and racing a full MSA championship. He explains why speed alone won't get you funded and why racing costs what it costs.
NOTE: This episode has a LOT of visual media. It is recommended that you check out the episode on YouTube.

Wildlife Biologist: The Best Day of My Career Looks Insane to Everyone Else | Real Truth About Jobs
29 Aug 2026
01:21:56
Dillon Jones has spent 12 years studying wildlife across Texas, Belize, and beyond. He's done midnight frog surveys in flooded rivers, pulled bot fly larvae from his own skin, and watched field work end relationships. As a private lands biologist at Goldberry Grove and founder of Learn Adventurously, his job is partly deep jungle fieldwork and partly the computer-heavy data work that surprises most people.
Entry-level pay runs below fast food wages. Jobs go to someone the team already knows. Most people quit. The ones who stay live out of cars, write grants, or find other income while biology stays the thing they go back to.
Questions answered in this episode: - What does a wildlife biologist actually do? - Why is wildlife biology pay so low, and how do you make real money? - Why do most people quit the field? - Why don't trap-neuter-release programs work for feral cats? - What do wildlife biologists do at airports? - How do you get started in wildlife biology before you have a degree?

Firefighter Reveals the Real Cost of 24-Hour Shifts | The Truth About Jobs
29 Aug 2026
01:07:43
Mark Andrew spent his career as a firefighter and paramedic with the Dearborn Fire Department in Michigan, a suburban department that runs both fire trucks and ambulances out of the same stations. In this episode, the retired fire captain breaks down what the job actually looks like: why roughly three out of four calls are medical runs rather than fires, what a 24-hour shift really involves, and why the hardest part of the work isn't the danger, it's the grinding call volume and the sleep it costs. Mark describes the seven years he spent building his resume before Dearborn hired him, the unwritten rules every rookie has to learn, and a mistake he made early on as a newly promoted officer when he tried to do too much himself instead of trusting his crew. He pushes back on the idea that firefighters are overpaid, explains how the fire service has responded to PFAS and forever chemicals in gear and foam, and talks candidly about how the schedule affected his family life and his own long-running struggle with insomnia. He also discusses Leading Through the Heat, the leadership book he wrote after a helmet camera captured a run of fires. By the end, Mark reveals what he considers the real secret of the job, and it has nothing to do with danger.
Topics covered: dual-role fire and EMS departments; 24-hour shift scheduling; paramedic licensing; sleep deprivation on the job; unwritten rookie rules; leadership mistakes after promotion; firefighter pay and public perception; PFAS and forever chemicals in gear

The FBI Profiler Who Caught The Unabomber | Real Truth About Jobs
29 Aug 2026
01:18:10
James R. Fitzgerald is a criminal profiler and forensic linguist. He began as a police officer near Philadelphia, joined the FBI, worked major crimes in New York, and later entered the Behavioral Analysis Unit at Quantico.
Fitzgerald explains what FBI criminal profilers actually do and why the television version is mostly wrong. Profilers do not usually kick down doors or solve cases in 42 minutes. They study offender behavior, victim selection, crime scenes, signature behavior, communications, and patterns that may help investigators narrow a suspect pool.
He also explains how the UNABOM investigation led him into forensic linguistics. Fitzgerald describes the decision to publish Ted Kaczynskiโs manifesto, the language patterns that helped connect Kaczynski to the document, and how authorship analysis became a major part of his career.

Prison Guard Reveals the Hidden World Behind the Walls | Real Truth About Jobs
28 Aug 2026
01:42:28
This is the reality of being a Corrections Officer. Prison guard is an older term, but we're using it in the title as many people do not know that. Tom Casey spent his career on the locked side of the door. A Marine Corps veteran, he spent eight years as a corrections officer in the New Hampshire state prison system starting in the early 1990s, five of them in the maximum security unit. Later, at 47, he returned to the job as a CO at the Essex County jail in Massachusetts. The career, he says, is not babysitting. It is running a small city of people who do not want to be there. He covers the Anatomy of a Setup training on inmate manipulation, the day he found his own brother incarcerated in the unit he was guarding, and the shank attack that earned him a Medal of Honor. He is honest about the cost: a wrecked back, a torn triceps and bicep, hypervigilance that followed him home, and the funerals of coworkers lost to suicide.
