Hitting the Career Break Wall? Don't Fall For This Midpoint Trap23 Sep 202600:31:21

Episode 78 - Hitting the Career Break Wall? Don't Fall For This Midpoint Trap

Feeling the urge to pack it in and go back to work right in the middle of your career break? You aren't alone. In this episode, Katrina McGhee and James Hammond dive deep into the hidden "trapdoor" that trips up high achievers around the midpoint of their break.

Once the initial bucket list items and big adventures are checked off, a wave of discomfort, existential questioning, and the familiar urge for productivity can hit hard. Katrina breaks down why your brain panics when faced with spaciousness, the massive costs of returning to work too early, and a simple 3-step framework to help you push through the discomfort and completely transform your life.

In this packed conversation, we explore why default living and decades of hustle culture trick your nervous system into believing that being busy equals being a good person. You will learn how to spot the early warning signs of the midpoint slump, why your brain desperately seeks the familiar comfort of a job, and how a former client successfully handled a sudden job offer without breaking the commitment she made to herself.

To overcome this tricky phase, Katrina outlines her actionable, no-nonsense solution built around defining your core purpose and themes, establishing temporary targets, and creating a grounded morning routine. By leaning into structure and intention instead of defaulting back to autopilot, you give yourself the vital mental space needed to reshape your relationship with work and rest. Whether you are currently on a career break, planning a sabbatical, or dreaming of stepping away from burnout, this episode gives you the exact blueprint you need to master your time without regret.

Does a Career Break Mean You're Not Ambitious Anymore?16 Sep 202600:22:57

Episode 77 - Does a Career Break Mean You're Not Ambitious Anymore?

Are you worried that stepping away from the daily grind means losing your edge?

In this episode of Taking a Career Break, hosts Katrina McGhee (career break and sabbatical coach) and James Hammond tackle a heavy stigma: the idea that taking a career break or sabbatical means you are no longer ambitious.

Inspired by recent client discussions and a viral Substack reflection titled "I lost my ambition in Europe," Katrina and James unpack the traditional, work-centric definition of ambition and why it often leads to burnout. They explore the difference between ambition and motivation, discuss the societal pressure to tie your self-worth to a corporate ladder, and offer a powerful reframe.

Tune in to discover why taking a career break isn't a sign of laziness—it's the ultimate act of being ambitious about your life, your well-being, and living a truly rich existence.

Summer Series #10 – From Survival Mode to World Travel: Nicole’s Family Career Break02 Sep 202601:08:19

Summer Series #10 – From Survival Mode to World Travel: Nicole Starling’s Family Career Break

In the final installment of the Summer Series, host Katrina McGhee sits down with Nicole Starling to explore the transformative power of taking an extended family sabbatical. After facing consecutive family losses, caregiver responsibilities, and corporate burnout, Nicole and her husband decided to pause, pivot, and take their two children on a world-schooling adventure.

Nicole shares the raw reality of planning a global trip, overcoming deep-seated career and financial fears, and managing decision fatigue on the road. She also breaks down how stepping away allowed her family to reconnect, how her kids gained life-changing perspectives, and how she successfully re-entered the workforce—landing a promotion and a raise with her former employer.

Episode Takeaways

Breaks don't have to be "earned"

Rest and space are essential parts of the human lifecycle, not something you only get after burning out.

Realized fears aren't total failures

Returning to your home state or former company doesn't mean you didn't grow; internal transformation changes how you experience your reality.

Kids thrive in the ordinary

The most meaningful memories from family travel often come from everyday interactions, local parks, and simple community connections—not expensive tourist attractions.

Sabbaticals can enhance market value

Stepping away gives you the clarity to recognize your professional worth and negotiate stronger compensation upon re-entry.

Summer Series #9 – Jessica Walked Away From a 60-Hour Week and Discovered a Whole New Life26 Aug 202600:55:22

Summer Series #9 – Jessica Walked Away From a 60-Hour Week and Discovered a Whole New Life

What happens when you're really good at your job, you're making a difference in the world, and yet you know deep down that the life you're living isn't good for you anymore?

In this episode of the Summer Series, I talk to Jessica O'Neill about one of the most incredible career-break transformations I've encountered.

Jessica had spent years building and leading a community food-access organisation in Western Massachusetts. As executive director, she was working 60–80 hrs a week, managing staff, writing grants, working with the board and carrying the weight of an organisation that meant an enormous amount to her. She was successful, but exhausted.

The hardest part wasn't knowing she needed a change. It was letting go.

Jessica feared that everything she'd built would fall apart if she stepped away. Through her work with me, she began to challenge those fears, create a concrete plan for her career break and ultimately give herself permission to choose herself.

What happened next was far beyond what she could have predicted.

During her break, Jessica travelled to England to study equine healing and communication, spent time with her twin sister in Italy, rediscovered writing and gardening, and most importantly, learned how to slow down, breathe and reclaim her own time.

That experience eventually became the foundation for an entirely new career working with horses, combining equine energy work, communication, nutrition, plants and sound therapy into what Jessica and her twin sister developed as the TwinErgy Method.

Summer Series #8 - Elly Quit Her 20-Year Career and Discovered a Completely Different Life19 Aug 202600:49:35

Summer Series #8 - Elly Quit Her 20-Year Career and Discovered a Completely Different Life

What happens when the career you spent 20 years building no longer feels like you?

In this powerful episode of the Summer Series, Katrina sits down with Elly, a former Assistant Dean for International Programs at the University of Illinois, elected county board member, and lifelong high achiever who reached a breaking point. After years of managing teams, navigating bureaucracy, and pushing through burnout, she made a bold decision: quit her job without knowing what came next.

Elly shares the emotional reality of leaving a respected career, the loss of professional identity, and the fear of what other people would think. She opens up about the struggle of learning how to rest, reclaiming mental space, and discovering that spaciousness can be just as uncomfortable as burnout.

What began as a career break turned into something far more transformative. During the break, Elly deepened family relationships, became more engaged in local government, returned to writing, and ultimately made a life-changing decision she never expected: becoming a mother again at 44.

This conversation is an honest look at uncertainty, reinvention, and the courage to choose a life that is aligned with who you are today, not who you were 20 years ago. If you’ve ever felt trapped in a successful career, questioned your identity outside of work, or wondered what might be possible if you finally gave yourself space to breathe, this episode will resonate deeply.

Summer Series #7 - From Burned-Out School Counselor to Medical Interpreter in Guatemala | Heidi Leal's Career Break Story12 Aug 202601:02:48

Summer Series #7 - From Burned-Out School Counselor to Medical Interpreter in Guatemala | Heidi Leal's Career Break Story

What happens when you walk away from a stable career without another job lined up?

In this episode of Taking a Career Break with Katrina McGhee, Heidi Leal shares her remarkable journey from high school counselor to freelance medical interpreter in Guatemala. After more than 20 years in public education, Heidi knew she could no longer continue in a role that left her feeling exhausted and disconnected. She resigned without a clear next step, spent time in Guatemala, and began exploring what a different kind of life could look like.

What followed was not a perfectly planned career pivot, but a series of experiments. Heidi tried selling handmade artisan products, creating travel itineraries, hosting Airbnb guests, and volunteering as an interpreter at a nonprofit hospital. Through those experiences, she discovered a skill that truly lit her up and eventually turned it into a flexible freelance business that gives her the freedom and autonomy she had been craving.

Katrina and Heidi talk about the fear of leaving a secure salary and pension, the guilt many high achievers feel when taking time off, the importance of structure during a career break, and the surprising opportunities that appear when you create space to explore. Heidi also shares the mindset shifts that stayed with her long after coaching ended, including celebrating small wins, letting work be enjoyable, and learning that rest does not have to be earned.

If you are considering a career break, feeling burned out in a long-term profession, or wondering how to pivot into something completely different, this conversation is full of practical insight and real-life encouragement.

Summer Series #6 - Kisha Left Without a Plan: The Career Break That Opened Unexpected Doors

Kisha Ward loved her corporate career—until burnout caught up with her. After years of leading major projects, ERP implementations, mergers, and international supply chain work, she made the courageous decision to negotiate an exit without having another job lined up.

In this episode of Taking a Career Break with Katrina McGhee, Kisha shares the fears that came with stepping away from a successful career, including losing her identity, disappointing others, and facing the uncertainty of what would come next.

What started as a much-needed break became a complete reimagining of work and life. Kisha talks about learning to rest, letting go of constant productivity, rebuilding her relationship with money, and reconnecting with family, friends, health, and creativity.

She also opens up about her writing journey—from struggling to start, to developing a consistent writing practice, to pursuing publication in the fast-growing romantasy genre. Along the way, an unexpected consulting opportunity found her, eventually allowing her to create a flexible lifestyle that combines high-level consulting with extended breaks dedicated to writing.

This conversation is a powerful reminder that a career break is not always a step backwards. Sometimes it is the pause that creates space for a more aligned, creative, and fulfilling future.

Summer Series #5 - Henriette Left a Successful Corporate Career at 55 — And It Changed Everything29 Jul 202601:05:23

Summer Series #5 - Henriette Left a Successful Corporate Career at 55 — And It Changed Everything

Henriette was a successful engineering manager leading multiple corporate teams, but behind the achievements, she was exhausted, disconnected from herself, and asking a question many high achievers quietly carry: “Is this all there is to life?”

In this inspiring Summer Series conversation, Henriette shares how she went from burnout and late-night tears to taking a fully intentional career break at the age of 55. Guided by a powerful vision she called Vision 60, she began redesigning her health, relationships, adventures, and future instead of simply escaping a demanding job.

Katrina and Henriette explore the moment she realised work was crowding out the life she truly wanted, how she created a purpose-driven career break, and why she was surprised to discover she had more financial freedom than she thought. They also discuss the fears that almost stopped her, including the belief that you do not walk away from a well-paid corporate role and the uncertainty of re-entering the workforce later in life.

During her break, Henriette filled her days with long walks, slow running, forest adventures, national park visits, family travel, and meaningful time with her husband, sons, grandchildren, and even her 80-year-old father. She also shares the unexpected joy of making new friendships and learning how to bring celebration and fun into ordinary life.

The conversation takes a powerful turn when Henriette explains how she applied for a dream management role from a lake house while visiting family in the United States, despite not planning to return to work for several more months. What happened next challenged every fear she had about career breaks and re-entry after 50.

This episode is a moving reminder that taking a career break is not about giving up ambition. It can be about coming back with more energy, better boundaries, clearer priorities, and a deeper sense of being fully alive.

Summer Series #4 - Karin Quit Her Job to Save Her Health—What Happened Next Will Inspire You

What happens when your body forces you to stop?

In this inspiring episode of the Taking A Career Break Summer Series, Katrina McGhee sits down with Karin Holmberg to share the remarkable story of how a planned career break became a life-changing healing journey.

After years of unexplained health issues, long working hours and mounting burnout, Karin reached a point where she could no longer ignore what her body was telling her. What started as a dream of taking a sabbatical soon became a necessity when she was diagnosed with Lyme disease, multiple co-infections and mould toxicity.

Karin shares how early planning allowed her to take a two-year career break, why moving back in with her parents became the key to making it financially possible, and how trusting her intuition helped her navigate one unexpected twist after another.

During her break, she immersed herself in learning about functional health, earned multiple certifications, launched her own practice and ultimately found a new definition of success—one that prioritises health, purpose and alignment over hustle.

If you're wondering whether a career break could change your life, Karin's story is proof that one courageous decision can completely transform your future.

Summer Series #3 - From 3AM Panic to Peace: Jon's Career Break Transformation15 Jul 202600:53:37

Summer Series #3 - From 3AM Panic to Peace: Jon's Career Break Transformation

In this incredibly moving episode of Taking A Career Break, Katrina sits down with former client Jon, who shares his deeply personal story of reaching breaking point after decades in the IT industry.

For years, Jon lived under constant pressure, waking in the middle of the night worrying about work, carrying the weight of responsibility for his team, and believing that taking time away would be selfish. What followed was a journey that changed his life forever.

Together, Jon and Katrina discuss the reality of severe burnout, why asking for help is one of the bravest things you can do, and how a career break became the catalyst for healing—not just professionally, but personally.

Jon opens up about entering an intensive outpatient mental health program, working with a dedicated care team, confronting fears he'd spent years avoiding, and learning that success isn't measured by working harder—it's measured by building a life you actually want to live.

Today, Jon has completely transformed his relationship with work. Instead of chasing promotions and constant pressure, he now works part-time at Ronald McDonald House, has embraced a simpler lifestyle with his wife, and has found a renewed sense of purpose, balance and peace.

Whether you're feeling burned out, questioning your career, or simply wondering if there's another way to live, this conversation is a powerful reminder that it's never too late to choose yourself.

If you've ever wondered whether taking a career break could change your life, Jon's story might be exactly what you need to hear.

Summer Series #2 - Juliana Left a Six-Figure Job to Finally Live Her Dream08 Jul 202601:00:23

Summer Series #2 - Juliana Left a Six-Figure Job to Finally Live Her Dream

Many of us dream about taking a career break—but fear, security and other people's opinions often stop us before we ever begin.

In Episode 2 of our Summer Series, Katrina sits down with former coaching client Juliana Moreira, whose career break journey proves that the biggest transformation isn't always changing careers—it's changing yourself.

After spending two decades climbing the corporate ladder, Juliana found herself questioning whether the life she'd built was really the one she wanted. Faced with a company restructure, a six-figure salary she was afraid to leave behind, uncertainty from her partner, major surgery, and even a European trip during the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, every sign seemed to say "stay safe."

Instead, she chose to trust herself.

During her 15-month career break, Juliana travelled across Europe, embraced solo travel, explored spirituality, launched a personal blog, learned to slow down, and discovered a version of herself she'd hidden away during years in corporate life.

What's most surprising is what happened next. Rather than leaving corporate forever, Juliana returned with new confidence, healthier boundaries, greater self-expression and a completely different relationship with work. Her career break didn't just change what she did—it changed who she became.

If you're wondering whether a career break is possible for you, or you're waiting for the "perfect time," this honest conversation may be exactly what you need to hear.

Summer Series #1 - Brittany Took a Sabbatical...Then Changed Her Entire Life01 Jul 202600:57:22

Welcome to the very first episode of our new Taking A Career Break Summer Series!

Throughout this special series, Katrina sits down with former coaching clients who have taken courageous career breaks and sabbaticals to hear what really happened after they stepped away from work.

Our first guest is Brittany Coleman, whose story is one of the most remarkable transformations we've ever shared.

When Brittany began her sabbatical, she was exhausted after years of nonstop work in the nonprofit sector. Burnout had taken over, and she struggled with the idea of stepping away from a leadership role she believed couldn't function without her.

But what began as a planned sabbatical quickly became something much bigger.

Just weeks into her break, Brittany faced an unexpected divorce. Instead of returning to work as a distraction, she used her career break to reconnect with herself, discover new passions, build healthier boundaries, and completely redefine what success looked like.

Today, Brittany runs her own consulting business, teaches pottery, works part-time in education, and has built a career around work she genuinely enjoys.

Behind the Scenes of a Career Break Entrepreneur: Katrina McGhee’s 9-Year Journey17 Jun 202600:52:24

Episode 74 - Behind the Scenes of a Career Break Entrepreneur: Katrina McGhee’s 9-Year Journey

Nine years ago, Katrina took a leap that made absolutely no sense on paper. She left behind a successful corporate career, launched a business helping people take career breaks, and stepped into a space that barely existed at the time.

In this special behind-the-scenes episode, Katrina shares the real story of building a business around an unconventional idea. From being featured in Forbes just months after launching, to investing $15,000 in a partnership that didn't work out, to nearly shutting the business down before receiving a surprise book deal, this is an honest look at what entrepreneurship really looks like.

We explore the challenges of self-trust, dealing with setbacks, finding your niche, and learning how success is often built through years of persistence rather than one breakthrough moment. Katrina also reflects on the lessons she's learned from coaching more than 200 career breaks, writing Taking a Career Break For Dummies, launching BreakSpace, and co-hosting this podcast.

Whether you're dreaming of taking a career break, starting a business, making a major life change, or simply wondering if it's worth betting on yourself, this episode offers a candid look at what happens when you keep showing up despite the uncertainty.

Why You Should Stop Waiting for the “Right Time” to Take a Career Break (Fear of Falling Behind Explained)29 Apr 202600:28:55

Episode 67 - Why You Should Stop Waiting for the “Right Time” to Take a Career Break (Fear of Falling Behind Explained)

Is there ever a right time to take a career break—or are you just waiting forever?

In this episode, James Hammond and career break coach Katrina McGhee dive deep into one of the biggest mindset traps holding people back: the belief that you need perfect timing to step away from your career.

From economic uncertainty and job market fears to internal pressure and workplace guilt, they unpack why it always feels like the wrong time—and why that thinking is keeping you stuck.

Katrina introduces the concept of PHOBO (Fear of Becoming Obsolete) and explains how this fear shows up both before and during a career break—often preventing people from fully committing to the change they need.

You’ll learn why the “perfect moment” doesn’t exist, how your brain is wired to keep you in survival mode, and what it actually takes to create a good enough time to step away and reset your life.

If you’ve been telling yourself “maybe next year” or “once things settle down,” this episode will challenge that narrative—and help you take your first real step toward a career break.

Debunking Career Break Fears: What’s Really Holding You Back?22 Apr 202600:25:51

Episode 66 - Debunking Career Break Fears: What’s Really Holding You Back?

Thinking about taking a career break—but your mind is spinning with what ifs?

In this powerful episode of Taking a Career Break with Katrina McGhee, we’re debunking the most common fears around career breaks, sabbaticals, and quitting your job to travel or reset your life.

From financial anxiety and job market fears to worrying about what other people will think, losing career momentum, or “wasting time,” Katrina coaches through real client concerns and reframes them into something far more empowering—and realistic.

If you’ve ever questioned whether taking time off work is a bad idea, worried about ruining your career, or wondered how you’d afford a sabbatical, this episode tackles those thoughts head-on. It’s honest, practical, and designed to help you cut through the noise and make a more informed decision about your future.

Throughout the conversation, you’ll hear why the fear of the job market is often exaggerated, how the idea of a “cushy job” can keep you stuck, and what actually happens to your career prospects after taking a break. We also explore how to manage your finances while on a career break, how to deal with judgment from others, and why taking time for yourself isn’t selfish—it’s often necessary.

There’s also a powerful conversation around purpose and clarity. If you’re putting pressure on yourself to have a life-changing “aha moment,” this episode will help you rethink what a successful break really looks like and why simply stepping away can be transformational in itself.

This is part mindset shift, part practical guidance—and fully focused on helping you move from fear to clarity and, ultimately, action.

If you’re feeling burned out, stuck in your career, or craving time to travel, reset, or redesign your life, this episode might be exactly what you need to hear.

Episode 60 - The Hardest Step of a Career Break: How to Finally Decide to Take One

Deciding to take a career break might be the hardest step of the entire journey.

In this episode of Taking a Career Break, career break coach Katrina McGhee and co-host James Hammond dive into the moment that stops so many professionals in their tracks: how to actually decide whether to take a career break or sabbatical.

For ambitious professionals and high achievers, stepping away from a career can feel risky. You may be dealing with burnout, questioning your purpose, or wondering if there’s more to life than the constant pressure of work — but the fear of losing momentum, income, or identity can keep you stuck in the same routine.

So how do you know if it’s truly time to pause?

Katrina shares the decision-making framework she has used with more than 200 coaching clients around the worldto help professionals evaluate whether a career break is right for them. This practical approach helps people move from uncertainty and overthinking to clarity and confidence about their next chapter.

Together, Katrina and James unpack the mental barriers, fears, and expectations that often stop people from taking a break — from financial worries and career anxiety to the pressure of what others might think.

If you've ever asked yourself:

  • Should I take a career break?

  • How do I know when burnout means it's time for a sabbatical?

  • What is the best way to decide if stepping away from work is the right move?

This episode will help you explore those questions and start thinking differently about your career, your wellbeing, and your future.

You’ll also hear how taking a career break can become an opportunity to reset your priorities, rediscover your purpose, travel, rest, learn new skills, or redesign the life you truly want.

Whether you're dreaming about a sabbatical, career pause, life reset, or extended travel break, this episode will give you the tools and mindset shifts needed to start making one of the most important decisions of your life.

Having The Audacity to Take a Career Break: Why High Achievers Feel Guilty Resting (And Why You Shouldn’t)04 Mar 202600:21:26

Episode 59 - Having The Audacity to Take a Career Break: Why High Achievers Feel Guilty Resting (And Why You Shouldn’t)

Why does taking a career break feel so… audacious?

In this powerful (and fiery) episode, Katrina and James unpack the hidden guilt high achievers feel when they consider stepping away from work — even temporarily.

From societal pressure to “earn” rest… to the subtle shame around quitting a “good” job… to the fear that a sabbatical will ruin your career — this episode tackles the emotional resistance behind taking time off work.

If you’ve ever thought:

  • “It must be nice to quit your job.”

  • “I should just be grateful.”

  • “What if people think I’m lazy?”

  • “Will a career break destroy my professional reputation?”

This one’s for you.

Katrina shares a personal story that sparked this conversation — and how it mirrors what so many professionals experience when they dare to prioritize their mental health, wellbeing, and long-term fulfillment.

You’ll also hear the powerful concept of an “Audacity Audit” — a practical exercise to help you reframe guilt and reclaim your right to rest.

Because here’s the truth:

You don’t need burnout, a layoff, or a crisis to justify taking a break.
You don’t need permission to want more.
And one year out of a 40-year career will not ruin your life.

But not listening to yourself just might.

What You’ll Learn in This Episode:

  • Why high performers feel guilty taking a career break

  • The societal conditioning that makes rest feel “lazy”

  • How burnout recovery requires courage — not permission

  • Why wanting more from your career isn’t greedy

  • The math behind taking a sabbatical (and why it’s smaller than you think)

  • How to conduct your own Audacity Audit before making a big decision

  • Why most people move on faster than you think when you quit

How to Start Your Career Break the Right Way (What to Do in Your First Week)25 Feb 202600:30:53

Episode 58 - How to Start Your Career Break the Right Way (What to Do in Your First Week)

What should you actually do in the first week of a career break?

In this episode, career break and sabbatical coach Katrina McGhee and co-host James Hammond break down how to start your break the right way — without pressure, guilt, or rushing into the next thing.

Drawing on real examples from the BreakSpace community and Katrina’s own deeply personal experience, this conversation explores why the first week of a career break is about decompression, permission, and reclaiming your time — not productivity.

You’ll hear practical, realistic ideas for how to celebrate the start of your break (from naps and puzzles to solo road trips and freedom days), along with five powerful guidelines to help you decide what your first week should look like.

Furthermore, this doesn't have to be limited to the first week; this could be the first two weeks, three weeks or even a month into your career break. This all depends on yourself and what you feel comfortable with, and this episode is there to get you started!

How To Overcome The Uncertainty Of Taking A Career Break18 Feb 202600:42:31

Episode 57 - How To Overcome The Uncertainty Of Taking A Career Break

Uncertainty is one of the biggest barriers stopping people from taking a career break—and it doesn’t just show up before you leave.

In this episode, James and Katrina unpack why uncertainty feels so uncomfortable, why trying to eliminate it never works, and how learning to sit with the unknown can actually transform your life.

Katrina shares four powerful mindset shifts that help high achievers stop overthinking their career break and start trusting themselves. From understanding how instant information has weakened our tolerance for uncertainty, to reframing worry as unproductive imagination, this conversation challenges the way we’ve been taught to make decisions about work and life.

You’ll also hear why a career break isn’t about finding the “right” answer—but about committing to a decision and making it right through adaptability, self-trust, and discovery. If you’re stuck in analysis paralysis, worried about what comes next, or trying to predict every possible outcome before stepping away from work, this episode will help you let go of certainty and move forward with confidence.

This episode also explores how building tolerance for uncertainty can improve your mental health, confidence, and long-term career satisfaction. Katrina shares practical ways to strengthen this skill—both in everyday life and during a career break—so you’re not constantly chasing reassurance, control, or perfect timing.

Whether you’re contemplating a break, already on one, or preparing for re-entry, this conversation will help you feel more grounded, capable, and confident navigating whatever comes next.

Why Job Searching Too Early Can Ruin Your Career Break11 Feb 202600:22:50

Episode 56 - Why Job Searching Too Early Can Ruin Your Career Break

Taking a career break or sabbatical is meant to restore your energy, clarity, and sense of purpose — but what happens when job searching sneaks in too early?

In this episode, James and career break coach Katrina McGhee unpack one of the most common (and sneakiest) mistakes people make during a break: starting the job search before they’re truly ready. What feels like being “responsible” or “playing it safe” can actually sabotage the entire purpose of taking time off.

Through real client stories from BreakSpace, Katrina explains why straddling two worlds — being half on a break and half in job-search mode — drains your energy, reinforces burnout, and creates unnecessary pressure and self-doubt. You’ll learn why fully disconnecting from work is essential, how to recognize resistance as valuable data, and when it might actually be time to extend your break rather than push through.

If you’re currently on a career break, planning one, or feeling tempted to “just browse jobs,” this episode will help you rethink reentry, protect your time off, and come back to work restored, confident, and aligned — instead of rushed and resentful.

In this episode, we cover:

  • Why early job searching feels safe but often backfires

  • The hidden cost of straddling a break and a job search

  • How resistance and resentment are signals — not failures

  • When extending your break might be the smarter move

  • Why fully unplugging from work leads to better reentry outcomes

If you’re dreaming of a career break or navigating one right now, you don’t have to do it alone. Resources for Katrina’s coaching, book, and BreakSpace community are linked in the show notes.

The 2-Minute Failure Fix: Celebrate Your Wins04 Feb 202600:27:24

Episode 55 - Why Celebrating Your Wins Matters More Than You Think

In this episode, James Hammond is joined by career break and sabbatical coach Katrina McGhee to unpack one of the most overlooked tools for sustainable success: celebration.

High achievers are often wired to move the goalposts, downplay progress, and focus on what’s missing rather than what’s working. Katrina explains why this mindset fuels burnout, dissatisfaction, and self-sabotage — and how learning to consistently celebrate wins can completely change the way you experience work, career breaks, and life transitions.

Drawing from her coaching practice and personal experience, Katrina shares how celebrating progress (not perfection) builds momentum, confidence, and self-belief — especially during career breaks, periods of uncertainty, or major life change. This conversation is a powerful reminder that success isn’t just about pushing harder, but about noticing how far you’ve already come.

If you’re feeling burned out, stuck in a cycle of never-enough, or struggling to enjoy your achievements, this episode offers a simple but transformative shift you can start using immediately.

In this episode, we cover:

  • Why high achievers struggle to celebrate their wins
  • How focusing on what’s missing leads to burnout and self-doubt
  • The difference between celebrating milestones vs. celebrating consistently
  • How celebration builds momentum during career breaks and big life changes
  • Why progress matters more than perfection
  • A simple weekly practice to start celebrating your wins without guilt

Whether you’re planning a career break, already on one, or simply feeling stuck in hustle mode, this episode will help you reframe success and reconnect with a healthier, more sustainable way forward.

From 3am Work Calls to a Life Rebuilt: A Career Break Client Success Story28 Jan 202600:23:05

Episode 54 - From 3am Work Calls to a Life Rebuilt: A Career Break Client Success Story

What does it really take to step away from a career when burnout feels overwhelming and stopping feels impossible?

In this powerful client story episode, career break and sabbatical coach Katrina McGhee is joined by James Hammond to unpack a real-life journey from chronic burnout to a completely reimagined life. The episode explores the experience of a mid-career professional who was trapped in constant responsibility, on-call work demands, and a deep fear that everything would fall apart if he stepped away.

Through this honest conversation, listeners hear how burnout can quietly escalate into a serious health and wellbeing crisis — and why taking a career break is often not a luxury, but a necessity.

Katrina walks through her coaching process, sharing how fear, financial anxiety, identity tied to work, and feelings of guilt can keep high achievers stuck. The episode also highlights the importance of building the right support system, reframing “selfishness,” and designing a break that leads to long-term life change — not just temporary relief.

This episode is especially relevant for professionals in their 40s and 50s who feel trapped by responsibility, leadership roles, or financial pressure, and who secretly wonder if life could look different on the other side of burnout.

In This Episode, Listeners Will Learn:

  • What real burnout looks like beyond “just being tired”

  • Why many high achievers feel unable to stop working — even when their health is suffering

  • How fear and identity keep people stuck in careers they’ve outgrown

  • What a supported career break can look like in practice

  • How reframing guilt and “selfishness” can unlock real change

  • Why taking a break can lead to a more sustainable and fulfilling life — not career failure

Who This Episode Is For:

  • Burned-out professionals and high achievers

  • Anyone considering a career break, sabbatical, or extended time off

  • Listeners feeling trapped by responsibility, finances, or fear of letting others down

  • Those seeking real, human stories — not just productivity advice

What If You’re Dreading Going Back to Work at the End of Your Career Break — and Don’t Know Why?21 Jan 202600:23:43

Episode 53 - What happens when your career break is coming to an end… and instead of feeling refreshed or excited, you feel dread?

In this episode, James Hammond and career break & sabbatical coach Katrina McGhee respond to a powerful listener question:

What if you’re dreading going back to work at the end of your career break — and don’t know why?

Together, they unpack the emotional crash many people experience after time away from work, especially after a long career break or sabbatical. Whether you’re facing the return to the same job, starting a job search, or questioning everything you thought you wanted, this episode offers clarity, reassurance, and practical guidance.

Katrina shares her 3-step framework for navigating the fear, frustration, and uncertainty of returning to work — and explains why these feelings are not a failure, but valuable information. You’ll learn how to process the emotions you’re experiencing, reconnect with a motivating “why,” and reframe what work can look like after a break.

This conversation is especially relevant if:

  • You feel anxious or resistant about going back to work after time off

  • You’re returning from a career break or sabbatical and feel stuck

  • You don’t want to fall back into the same grind you left

  • You’re unsure whether to return to work, change careers, or redesign your life

If you’ve ever wondered “Why do I feel like this?” or “Is it normal to dread going back to work after a career break?” — this episode is for you.

  • Why dreading the end of a career break is more common than you think

  • The emotional impact of returning to work after travel or time off

  • How to process fear, burnout, frustration, and uncertainty without judgment

  • The importance of finding a new motivating goal after your break

  • How to return to work with more purpose, clarity, and intention

  • Why work after a career break doesn’t have to look like work before it

If you’re navigating life after a career break and wondering what comes next, this episode will help you move forward with more confidence — even if you don’t have all the answers yet.

Revisiting Episode 21 - What Most Career Coaches Get WRONG About Career Breaks14 Jan 202600:24:02

Episode 52 - Revisiting Episode 21 - What Most Career Coaches Get WRONG About Career Breaks

This week, in the final episode of our revisited series, we look back at Katrina’s second appearance on the podcast—Episode 21—and a conversation that’s more relevant than ever.

At the time, Katrina noticed a surge of career break advice coming from media-facing career coaches, much of it well-intentioned but not always trustworthy. While many career coaches excel at helping people re-enter the workforce, change careers, or polish a résumé, that doesn’t automatically make them experts in taking a career break.

In this episode, Katrina explains why working with a dedicated career break coach—someone who understands the realities, risks, and opportunities of stepping away—can make all the difference when planning time off work and setting yourself up for what comes next.

🧠 Key Takeaways

  • You’re not taking a break to become a better cog in the machine — you’re taking it to live a better life.

  • Let go of productivity guilt and give yourself permission to truly disconnect.

  • Reframing your career break as a life investment shifts the whole narrative.

  • Not every moment of your break needs to serve your next job — it should serve you.

Episode 48 - The Future of Career Breaks in 2026: Trends, Data & Why More People Are Taking Sabbaticals

In this episode, James and Katrina explore an important question as 2026 approaches: Are career breaks becoming more accepted and normalised, or is the movement slowing down? The conversation reveals a clear answer — the momentum behind sabbaticals is stronger than ever.

James invites Katrina to break down the real trends she’s seeing through her coaching, BreakSpace community, and the growing volume of research on the topic. Katrina explains why the demand for sabbaticals keeps increasing, how major platforms like LinkedIn and Harvard Business Review have validated the trend, and why people are feeling more empowered to take intentional time off.

They also discuss the most powerful driver behind the rise of career breaks — seeing other real people do it. Whether through personal networks or storytelling, this visibility creates a ripple effect that encourages others to take the leap.

The episode touches on burnout, shifting work culture, and why more professionals are questioning the traditional path. James and Katrina also share details about a new 2026 mini-series featuring powerful, real career break stories from individuals Katrina has supported first-hand.

For anyone considering a sabbatical, dealing with burnout, or simply curious about the future of the movement, this episode offers clarity, inspiration, and practical insight. Katrina also shares resources and ways listeners can begin exploring their own break.

There Were Signs: How We Learned to Break the Status Quo and Lessons in Courage, Authenticity, and Going Your Own Way19 Nov 202500:29:03

Episode 46 - There Were Signs: How We Learned to Break the Status Quo and Lessons in Courage, Authenticity, and Going Your Own Way

In this reflective and deeply personal episode, Katrina and James explore the moments in their lives when the signs were there all along—the nudges, red flags, and inner whispers that pointed them away from the status quo and toward a more aligned, authentic life. These are the stories that shaped who they became, long before a career break was even on the horizon.

Katrina opens up about her early career choices and the unmistakable moments when she knew she didn’t quite fit into the mold around her. From turning down a “safe” corporate job despite external pressure, to boldly choosing time over money at just twenty-four, she shares the decisions that signaled she was a square peg refusing to squeeze into a round hole. She also recounts a pivotal, vulnerable moment in business school—standing in front of a room of high-achieving MBA students and choosing authenticity over conformity—that ultimately reinforced her belief in staying true to herself.

James mirrors these stories with his own path, including the unconventional decisions that pulled him away from expectation and toward possibility. He reflects on turning away from the typical academic route, choosing music over traditional subjects, discovering the world of long-term travel, and how those early experiences shaped the life he eventually built. His story of working relentlessly to fund a two-year adventure—and the shift years later toward building a sustainable, purpose-driven career—reveals just how powerful it can be to raise the bar for your own life.

Together, they explore how these moments add up: the subtle knowing, the brave choices, the course corrections, and the willingness to disappoint others in order not to disappoint yourself. This conversation is for anyone standing at a crossroads, sensing that something in their life no longer fits, and wondering whether they dare to choose something different.

If you’re feeling the pull toward a career break, a lifestyle shift, or a version of life that aligns more deeply with who you are, this episode will remind you that honouring those signs can open the door to possibilities you haven't even imagined yet. You’re not meant to fit into every space—sometimes the life you want starts with simply admitting the shape of who you are.

I Might Get Bored… or Love It Too Much: Two Unexpected Career Break Fears05 Nov 202500:24:09

Episode 44 - I Might Get Bored… or Love It Too Much: Two Unexpected Career Break Fears

Are you secretly worried you’ll be bored on a career break — or even worse, that you’ll love it too much to ever go back?

In this week’s episode of Taking A Career Break with Katrina McGhee, Katrina and James unpack two surprising fears that stop people from taking the break they’ve been dreaming about. These aren’t your typical money or career worries — they’re emotional, subtle, and surprisingly common.

Katrina shares real stories from her coaching clients, her own experience taking a 20-month break, and what happens when you finally give yourself permission to slow down. Together, she and James explore why boredom can actually fuel creativity, how overstimulation makes rest feel uncomfortable, and what it really means if you’re scared to “like your break too much.”

Then, the conversation turns to that second, almost funny but very real fear — what if you love your break so much you never want to go back? Katrina shares her own experience of not wanting her 20-month break to end, while James reflects on his cycles of working, travelling, and finding meaning beyond the 9–5 grind. Together, they explore what this fear really reveals about our relationship to freedom, fulfilment, and work.

You’ll hear honest reflections on what happens when the fear of freedom meets the reality of modern work, plus practical advice for navigating your return — or redefining what work looks like next.

Expect laughter, honesty, and plenty of aha moments — including why “tasting the good life” can raise your standards and inspire lasting change.

Finding Freedom: The Art of Balancing Structure and Spontaneity on a Career Break29 Oct 202500:26:01

Episode 43 - Finding Freedom: The Art of Balancing Structure and Spontaneity on a Career Break

In this episode, James and Katrina dive deep into one of the most common and misunderstood challenges people face when they finally decide to step away from work: how much structure do you actually need when you take time off?

We’ve been conditioned to think freedom means doing whatever we want, whenever we want — but what happens when the complete lack of structure starts to feel overwhelming? Katrina, creator of The Break Blueprint, believes that structure and freedom aren’t enemies at all. In fact, the right kind of structure can become a powerful ally, helping you create space for self-discovery, rest, and exploration without falling into the trap of overplanning.

Throughout the conversation, James and Katrina unpack the tension between control and curiosity — how to balance a desire for routine with the need to let go. Katrina explains how “guardrails” can guide your journey without turning it into an itinerary, and why the version of you three months into a break is wiser, calmer, and more open than the one who started it. They explore the mindset shifts needed to embrace flexibility, listen to your intuition, and build a break that evolves as you do.

The episode also delves into the reality of high achievers — those who are used to constant productivity and goal-setting — and why they often struggle to rest. Katrina shares her advice on how to work with that inner voice that demands results, and how to use a blueprint not to restrict yourself, but to give yourself permission to explore what truly lights you up. From following “glimmers” — those small, joyful sparks that point toward fulfillment — to rediscovering your capacity for play, the conversation reveals how clarity, purpose, and freedom can coexist beautifully.

They also discuss the Sunday Scaries, unused vacation days, and the American work culture that makes people feel guilty for slowing down. Katrina breaks down how our nervous systems adapt to constant doing, and why it takes intentional time and compassion to recalibrate. It’s a conversation that reminds us rest isn’t a reward for productivity.

By the end, the message is clear: freedom doesn’t come from abandoning structure entirely — it comes from creating enough of it to support your spontaneity, while trusting yourself to follow what feels right. Whether you’re taking your first career break, planning time away to recharge, or simply rethinking how you use your weekends, this episode will leave you with practical insight, emotional clarity, and a renewed sense of what’s possible when you finally step off the treadmill.

When Nobody Supports Your Career Break (Do It Anyway!)22 Oct 202500:22:35

🎧 Episode 42 – When Nobody Supports Your Career Break (Do It Anyway!)

What happens when everyone around you — your friends, your colleagues, even your partner — tells you not to take a career break? In this powerful and honest conversation, I sit down with Katrina to explore what it really takes to follow your intuition when no one else understands your decision.

Katrina shares a moving story about a client whose entire support system was against her dream of stepping away from work. Even her spouse begged her not to do it. Faced with burnout and exhaustion, she felt torn between what she knew she needed and what everyone else thought was “safe.” Together, we unpack the emotional side of this crossroads — fear, resistance, guilt, and the deeply personal reasons why people react so strongly when someone they love decides to step away.

We dive into why this pushback often isn’t about you at all, but rather a reflection of other people’s limiting beliefs and anxieties. Katrina explains how clarity — not just confidence — becomes your most powerful tool when the world is telling you no. By crafting a clear purpose statement and defining the themes behind your break, you can start to transform fear into understanding.

This episode also explores Katrina’s three paths to clarity and confidence — whether you’re doing it solo with her book Taking a Career Break for Dummies, joining her BreakSpace community for group support, or diving into one-on-one coaching. Whatever level you’re at, Katrina’s guidance helps you build a plan, a purpose, and the courage to take that first step.

If you’ve ever felt burned out, stuck, or unsupported in your dreams, this episode will remind you that your break isn’t reckless — it’s restorative. You’ll learn how to reclaim your story, protect your energy, and lead with conviction, even when no one else gets it yet.

Whether you’re still in the daydreaming phase, quietly researching, or standing at the edge of giving notice, this conversation will help you find strength, clarity, and permission to move forward.

Escaping the 9-to-5: Proving Worth vs. Finding Devotion24 Sep 202500:20:15

Episode 40 - Escaping the 9-to-5: Proving Worth vs. Finding Devotion

In this episode of the podcast Taking a Career Break with Katrina McGhee, Katrina reflects on one of the biggest questions people face when considering a break from their careers: Are you working to prove your worth, or are you devoting yourself to what truly matters?

Katrina shares how this powerful question surfaced during her own moments of reflection as a digital nomad and life coach. She unpacks the difference between chasing external validation—through promotions, salaries, and titles—and choosing to live with intentional devotion to freedom, fulfilment, and joy.

This conversation goes beyond the surface of taking time off. It’s about rethinking the cultural scripts that tell us success is only found in constant striving. Katrina explores how devotion can look different for everyone, from parenting to travelling the world to creating sustainable businesses. She emphasises that the key is making a conscious choice about where to devote your time, energy, and focus—rather than unconsciously trying to prove you’re “enough.”

If you’ve ever found yourself stuck in the 9-to-5 grind, wondering if all your effort is leading to true happiness, this episode will give you permission to pause, reflect, and reconsider your path. Katrina offers both practical wisdom and personal stories to help you see that a career break isn’t about weakness—it’s about courage, self-awareness, and living intentionally.
