| Take It Personal (Ep 151: Dah Shinin' Album Spotlight) with General Steele | 08 Apr 2025 | 04:14:41 | |
On episode 151, we're teleporting back to 1995. If you had a 5-disc CD changer in the whip, chances are you had Dah Shinin' in one of those slots. Tek and Steele announced their presence with authority on Enta da Stage in '93, then dropped the classic Bucktown b/w Let's Git It On single in early '94, which had everyone patiently waiting for their album. In January '95, the wait was over and Dah Shinin' immediately became a favorite. With their witty harmonizing 1-2 punch, along with the Da Beatminerz, Dah Shinin' was classic upon first listen and the birth of what we now know as the Boot Camp Clik. We're joined by General Steele, as we go track-by-track with him on Dah Shinin'. Learn all about your favorites, whether it's Timz 'n' Hood Chek, Sound Bwoy Bureill, Bucktown, Hellucination, Let's Git It On or Cession at da Doghillee. Steele shares intimate details about the making of every track, including the remixes and some non-album cuts. Steele also shares some hilarious and fascinating stories about recording @ D&D Records, Buckshot, Sean Price, working with Mary J. Blige and of course Tupac Shakur. If you're a Smif-N-Wessun fan or a Boot Camp fan, you're not going to want to miss this episode! | Take It Personal - Little Brother (Phonte & Rapper Big Pooh) Interview | 14 Feb 2024 | 02:33:44
Every once in a while, an interview turns more into a conversation amongst rap dudes. We anticipated having Rapper Big Pooh and Phonte for just 45 minutes, so when I tell you the interview lasted 2 hours and 30 minutes, it tells you just how funny and relatable these guys are to talk to.
We covered an awful lot, yet it wasn't nearly enough once it was over. We discuss the May the Lord Watch documentary, their love for Beck or Bjork and their hate for Sci-Fi and its magical white people. We touch on their ridiculous stretch of music that ultimately burnt them out.
We get into the brilliance of Curb Your Enthusiasm, Ice Cube's Death Certificate, which is better Low End Theory or Midnight Marauders, and Dominican broads making chili con queso.
We also talk Ghostface, Murs, Common, The Roots, Evidence, Kendrick Lamar and their affection for Outkast.
I saw a great quote the other day and it said, "If Wu-Tang is for the kids, Little Brother is for the ones that raise them."
Thanks to Rapper Big Pooh, Phonte, Andre Barnes and our longtime homie, I.D. for the idea. Stay tuned as we prepare to drop our Little Brother tribute in early March.
Enjoy the discussion. http://vevo.ly/Vtyu1R

| Take It Personal - Mr. Eon of The High & Mighty - Take It Personal (Interview) | 14 Mar 2022 | 01:28:03 | |
We’re joined by Mr. Eon of The High & Mighty, who sits with the crew to discuss one of hip hop's greatest eras. We hear stories about how it started for them, the Masta Ace beef, working with Bobbito, The Alchemist, Rashida Jones, Beetlejuice, Kool Keith, Pharoahe Monch, Eminem and Cage. During the late 90s and early 00's, Eastern Conference Records was a staple in independent hip-hop. Who better to tell vivid tales of the indie hip-hop movement than one of the guys responsible for it? What made this era one of the greatest? The music was fresh, innovating, original, honest and most importantly fun. D-I-Y in full effect. Record stores in full effect. Online chat groups where you shared music was definitely in effect. That feeling of excitement while scarfing down a slice of pizza or Gray's Papaya because you couldn't wait to see what Fat Beats on 6th Ave had. When Fat Beats wasn't enough for your fix, you went to the LES to peep A-1 or took the iron horse to Fulton Street, to check out Beat Street and grab a treat from Juniors after. The days in New York during the indie hip-hop movement were magical. Now, let's re-live those memories and magic this era gave us. | Take It Personal (Ep 54: Nas vs. Jay-Z) | 26 Jan 2025 | 05:23:13
We knew when making this that it had to be special. It had to be something unlike we've ever witnessed before, even though the battle took place nearly decades ago. It was important to re-create the magic and the memories and celebrate two of the most decorated veterans in hip-hop.
This epic episode plays like a Scorsese film. But, unlike most films, this gladiator battle has 4 acts. Each battle is carefully curated to bring out the best in each opponent.
We found a way to breathe new life into this battle of rap dominance and New York supremacy. Whether you're Team Nas or Team Jay-Z, we guarantee you moments where you'll feel conflicted, startled and even celebratory.

It’s only right: the greatest producer of all-time receives the greatest tribute of all-time. It was no easy feat selecting and sequencing tracks for this massive show.
We hope after listening to the incredible this Work of Mart homage, you'll agree, DJ Premier is the GOAT. But don't worry, we've made sure to include all the ill-collabos, obscure remixes and of course, your favorite classics too! www.takeitpersonalradio.com www.patreon.com/TakeItPersonal Follow us on Instagram @takeitpersonalradio

| Take It Personal (Ep 19: Atmosphere Tribute) with Slug | 25 Dec 2024 | 04:16:23 | |
On this flashback of Take It Personal Radio, we're hitting you with episode 19, our Atmosphere Tribute.
Over the past few decades, Atmosphere has been touring the globe, making music, making fans and one member, especially, making babies. Hailing outta Minneapolis, Slug and Ant aren’t just a group, they’re Minnesota Nice! The slept-on beatmaker and storyteller have accumulated copious amounts of success throughout the years, so it was time Take It Personal took you on a tribute trip down Atmosphere lane. We cover the classics, the obscure, fan favorites and even some collaborations. We promise you, there will never be another Atmosphere tribute quite like this one. To further cement that, we invited Slug on the show to break bread with us. The 2-part interview plays throughout this 4+ hour tribute show. We delve into a different side of Sean Daley. We talk family, friends, critics touring, Soundset, DJ Premier and some crazy stories like the time Rick Rubin was courting them. When you think Minnesota musicians, you immediately think of Prince, The Time, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, and probably Bob Dylan, but after this show, we have to think Atmosphere will be right there with them.

| Take It Personal Flashback (Mos Def Tribute) | 02 Jun 2025 | 03:10:30 | |
On this flashback of Take It Personal Radio, we're hitting you with our Mos Def tribute. If there was a poster that defined the indie hip-hop movement, it would have the face of The Mighty Mos Def on it. Whether you first heard him on My Kung Fu, The Love Song or Stakes Is High Remix, you immediately knew what you heard was special. We're talking a generational talent. Mos Def had the voice, the sound, the style, the charm, the humor, the endless stories and the ability to spit bars as great as singing those melodic hooks. A real dual-threat. Triple-threat when you factor in his acting chops. If LL Cool J is the face of Def Jam, Mos Def is the face of Rawkus. He breathed new life into hip-hop in the late 90s. Mos was the last Jedi able to carry on that Native Tongues torch. On Episode 85, we cover the catalog, the guest spots and discuss our favorite Mos Def moments. Don't forget to follow us @takeitpersonalradio, as we have an exciting giveaway on this episode.

| Take It Personal (Ep 120: J Dilla Tribute Pt. 2) | 12 Mar 2025 | 04:22:59 | |
Episode 120 is part 2 of our J Dilla Tribute, it also marks the start of our 7th season doing Take It Personal. We started this podcast in 2016 as an excuse to get together and listen to some great music. Who knew this would bring so many people together from all walks of life? We went from talking about rappers on this show to eventually interviewing the very best of them. Rappers we grew up idolizing, we were "giving them their flowers" before that became a played-out word with our titanic tributes. We're putting the explanation point on the remarkable young career James Yancey had. This extra large episode features 3 mixes clocking in over 4+ hours with early Jay Dee production as well as collaborations with Madlib, Phat Kat, Illa J, Q-Tip, Common, Frank-n-Dank, Chino XL, Royce Da 5'9, DOOM, Raekwon, De La Soul, The Roots and Black Star to name a few. This 2-part tribute features over 125 Dilla tracks and has a runtime of 7.5 hours. This is simply our way saying, J Dilla changed our lives.

| Take It Personal (Ep 119: J Dilla Tribute Pt. 1) | 12 Mar 2025 | 02:55:30 | |
Episode 119 is our tribute to one of the greatest producers of all-time, J Dilla. Whether you knew him as Jon Doe, Jay Dee, J. Yancey, Dilla Dog or just Dilla, you knew him as the most influential producer hip-hop has seen in the last quarter century. J Dilla wasn't just a musical genius, he absolutely reinventing the way hip-hop was being created. His passion, imagination and the prowess displayed on each track is something we'll never be able to duplicate. To put it bluntly, J Dilla was simply ahead of his time. On part 1, we're playing the essentials from The Pharcyde, De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, Common, The Roots, Janet Jackson, Q-Tip and of course Slum Village. We also focus on the solo career of Dilla as well as the collaborations with Madlib, Ghostface Killah, MF DOOM and Jay Electronic. Whether we're talking about Pete Rock, Preemo, Q-Tip, RZA or even Madlib, you can immediately identify their signature sound. They hold a special place in our hearts, but J Dilla's place in different. His music hits different. We can't think of a better way to close-out 2022 than with this 2-part tribute in honor of James Dewitt Yancey. Like Joni Mitchell says "You don't know what you've got til it's gone." www.takeitpersonalradio.com Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/TakeItPersonal

| Take It Personal Flashback (Street Level Spotlight) with Al' Tariq & Psycho Les | 07 Jun 2025 | 03:22:43 | |
On this flashback of Take It Personal Radio, we're hitting you with a remastered edition of Episode 67, our album spotlight on the timeless Beatnut's classic Street Level. It's been 4 years since we recorded this episode and our feelings about this album haven't changed a bit. We got to relive this classic album track-by-track with special guests Al' Tariq aka Kool Fashion and Psycho Les. We speak to Al Tariq first and later Les joins with his own perspective. Then, in typical Take It Personal fashion, and we reunite these two guys for the first time in many, many years. In '94, we became immune to classic releases because they were dropping weekly.
Street Level isn’t just a classic album, it’s damn near perfect, front to back. The production is some of the finest you'll ever hear, too. While The Nuts went on to have greater success as a duo with chart-topping hits such as Off The Books and Watch Out Now, their energy and wit always seemed the best when they were a trio.
We released both stand-alone interviews of Al' Tariq and Psycho Les on our Vevo (Youtube) channel, as they discuss their solo ventures, Junkyard Juju, the reintroduction of Big Pun, J-Lo stealing their beat, plus life after The Nuts. There's even a discussion about a possible reunion.
Revisit our Tribute to Street Level - we know you're going to LOVE IT!

| Take It Personal Flashback (Hieroglyphics Tribute) | 08 Oct 2024 | 06:35:30 | |
On this flashback of Take It Personal Radio, we're hitting you with a remastered version of episode 50, our Hieroglyphics Tribute. This was a mammoth one. We've got special guests Slug, Murs, Apathy, J-Zone, The Grouch & Breakbeat Lou stopping by. We interview Del, Domino, Casual & Tajai and they've got stories for days!
Del talks about doing shrooms with Q-Tip to Casual freestyling with Pharoahe Monch at the Gavin. We touch on Casual vs. Saafir and the impact it had on battle rap. We unfortunately find out Ice Cube wasn’t a fan of Gang Starr and thought Kool Keith was too weird. Del explains what it was like not only being cousins with Ice Cube, but their musical similarities and his involvement earlier on in his career.
We learn about Del’s feelings towards the Gorillaz, while Domino breaks down just about every Hiero collaboration imaginable. We talk I Wish My Brother George Was Here, ’93 Til Infinity, No Need For Alarm, Fear Itself, Like It Should Be and No Man’s Land. We discuss their rap dominance prior to being dropped by the label. Tajai’s breaks down his feelings towards the group’s sophomore album and the importance of each album sounding different.
This episode can be a slow burn or a fast one, but we all know Hiero is til infinity!

| Take It Personal (Ep 29 & 30: Native Tongues Tribute) with Mike G. | 01 Jan 2025 | 12:00:01 | |
On this flashback of Take It Personal, we're hitting you with a combined remastered version of episodes 29 (part 1 & 2) our Native Tongues Tribute. This 12+ hour episode features music from the most important, and influential hip-hop collective we've ever seen. With the help and hustle of both DJ Red Alert and Chris Lighty, the Native Tongues were a force to be reckoned with. The Jungle Brothers paved the way for groups like De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest and Black Sheep. Prior to The Flava Unit, Queen Latifah was this crew's Den mother. Along with her protege Monie Love, they were both instrumental in helping the female movement in hip-hop.
The Native Tongues provided plenty of classic albums, countless anthems and produced more offspring than Joe Jackson. The Natives helped jumpstart the careers of Busta Rhymes, Chi-Ali, Mos Def, J Dilla and have influenced artists such as Brand Nubian, K.M.D., Common, The Beatnuts, Bush Babees, The Roots, Slum Village, Little Brother, Kanye West, Black Star, Pharrell, Hieroglyphics, The Pharcyde, J5, Kedrick Lamar, Pusha T, Andre 3000 and even Nas. They've influenced everyone!
The Native Tongue brand was strong despite some internal conflict, growing pains and different career paths. They left an everlasting impression on hip-hop.
