It’s a technological revolution that is deeply transforming the world and industry in profound ways. Artificial Intelligence is a true game-changer. The global AI market was already worth 280 billion dollars in 2024 – and is expected to be ten times higher within the next decade.

But this revolution is not happening on its own. It is intertwined with the nuclear revolution. On one side, AI is supporting the development of nuclear energy. It helps deliver programmes faster, makes existing plants more efficient, and thereby contributes to meeting the challenges of the energy transition.

On the other hand, nuclear energy supports the development of AI. The technology is increasingly power-hungry. Data centres, in particular, require a reliable and readily available energy source that is also low-carbon to meet the challenges of the energy transition. Nuclear power plants meet this need.

There are therefore strong synergies between AI and nuclear energy - and that’s what we’ll be exploring in this episode of Switch On.

C’est une révolution technologique qui transforme le monde et l’industrie en profondeur. L’intelligence artificielle est un bouleversement. Le marché mondial de l’Intelligence Artificielle pesait déjà 280 Milliards de dollars en 2024. Ce sera 10 fois plus dans 10 ans. Mais cette révolution ne se joue pas seule. Elle est liée à une autre : celle du nucléaire. D’un côté, l’IA soutient le développement de l’énergie nucléaire. Elle permet notamment de délivrer les programmes plus vite, de rendre les centrales existantes plus performantes. Et ainsi de répondre au défi de la transition énergétique. De l’autre, l’énergie nucléaire accompagne le développement de l’IA. La technologie est de plus en plus consommatrice en électricité. Les data centers ont notamment besoin d’une source d’énergie fiable et disponible tout en étant bas-carbone pour répondre aux enjeux de la transition énergétique. Les centrales nucléaires répondent à ce besoin. Il existe donc des synergies entre IA et nucléaire. Et c’est ce que nous allons explorer dans cet épisode de Switch On.

In this new episode, we address a key pillar of the energy transition: optimising the performance and extending the operational lifespan of the existing nuclear fleet.

As electricity demand continues to rise, and while waiting for new power plants to be built, it is crucial to optimise those already in operation.

This strategy is built around two main pillars: improving output by optimising maintenance outages and extending the lifespan of reactors, many of which are reaching or surpassing 40 years of operation. In both the United States and France, major programmes are underway to address this challenge.

Digital technologies play a central role in achieving these objectives. This is what we call augmented engineering: an approach that combines technical expertise with advanced digital solutions to enhance the safety, performance and longevity of nuclear facilities.

Dans ce nouvel épisode, nous abordons un levier essentiel de la transition énergétique : la performance et la durée de vie du parc nucléaire existant. Alors que la demande en électricité ne cesse d’augmenter, et en attendant la construction de nouvelles centrales, il est crucial d’optimiser celles qui sont déjà en service.

Deux grands axes structurent cette stratégie : améliorer la production en optimisant les arrêts de maintenance, et prolonger la durée de vie des réacteurs, qui pour beaucoup atteignent ou dépassent les 40 ans d’exploitation. Aux États-Unis comme en France, de vastes programmes sont engagés pour répondre à cet enjeu. Pour y parvenir, les technologies digitales jouent un rôle central. On parle alors d’ingénierie augmentée, une approche qui combine expertise technique et solutions numériques pour renforcer la sûreté, la performance et la longévité des installations.

In this episode, we will talk about the management of the fuel cycle, a crucial issue in the development of nuclear energy. In a world undergoing profound changes, where carbon neutrality goals are driving new energy policies and conflicts between countries are disrupting the geopolitics of energy, mastering this cycle becomes essential. Today, the European Climate Law commits the EU to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 and to meeting an intermediate target of reducing net greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030 compared to 1990. This objective implies the development of nuclear energy and, by extension, a growing need for fuel, which will impact on all the existing infrastructures dedicated to the fuel production, enrichment and reprocessing stages. New reactor programmes, whether high-power or modular, like SMRs and AMRs, are generating new and increasingly significant fuel demands. It is, therefore, urgent to anticipate these needs. Current fuel cycle plants are also aging, so their lifespan needs to be extended and new ones built. Current geopolitical tensions, especially with Russia, prompt a reconsideration of sources of uranium supply and raise the issue of energy sovereignty.

SMR et AMR : de la vision à la mise en œuvre

L’industrie nucléaire est aujourd’hui portée par une dynamique forte dans laquelle s’inscrivent les projets de SMR, Small Modular Reactors, et les AMR, Advanced Modular Reactors. Ces réacteurs, qu’on ne présente plus, ont notamment la particularité d’être compacts et moins coûteux. Ces condensés de technologie permettront demain de répondre aux objectifs de transition vers une énergie bas carbone. De nombreux pays investissent dans la recherche, la conception et la construction de ces réacteurs nucléaires de nouvelle génération. On compte plus de 80 projets à l’étude partout dans le monde, et des projets sont d’ailleurs déjà en cours de développement en Chine, aux Etats-Unis, au Canada. Les SMR et les AMR semblent être une solution pour une Europe confrontée à un double défi : atteindre les objectifs de neutralité carbone en 2050 et renforcer son indépendance énergétique. La question de la souveraineté énergétique se pose et pour y répondre, l’Europe lance une alliance industrielle sur les petits réacteurs nucléaires modulaires. Et la France joue également sa partie. Sur le territoire français, 11 projets d’AMR ont été sélectionnés par l’État dans le cadre de son grand plan France 2030. Dans la phase 1 de leur projet, ils bénéficieront d’un soutien de l’État et du CEA de plus de 100 millions d’euros. Ce tableau donne une idée de la dynamique nationale et internationale qui anime le secteur nucléaire autour de ces technologies innovantes.

Dans cet épisode, nous allons parler de la gestion du cycle du combustible, un enjeu crucial dans le développement de l'énergie nucléaire. C’est un enjeu incontournable dans le développement actuel de l’énergie nucléaire : l’approvisionnement en combustible. Dans un monde en profonde mutation, où les objectifs de neutralité carbone imposent de nouvelles politiques énergétiques, où les conflits entre pays bousculent la géopolitique de l’énergie, la maîtrise du cycle du combustible devient un enjeu majeur. Le cycle de combustible, ce sont toutes les étapes de production de combustible pour approvisionner les centrales, jusqu’au recyclage de la matière. Aujourd’hui, la loi européenne sur le climat engage l’Union à atteindre la neutralité climatique d’ici à 2025 et à répondre à un objectif intermédiaire de réduction des émissions nettes de gaz à effet de serre d’au moins 55% d’ici à 2030 par rapport aux niveaux de 1990. Cet objectif clair implique le développement de l’énergie nucléaire, et développe donc un besoin croissant en combustible. Les nouveaux programmes de construction de centrales ou de réacteurs modulaires de type SMR et AMR créent ces nouveaux besoins, des besoins qui vont devenir de plus en plus importants. Il est donc urgent de les anticiper. Les usines de fabrication de combustible sont vieillissantes, il faut en construire de nouvelles. Les tensions géopolitiques, avec la Russie notamment, amènent à repenser les sources de production de combustible et posent des questions de souveraineté énergétique.
