Days on File with Jon Coen29 Aug 202401:29:17
Our Guest on this episode is freelance content creator, Jon Coen from Long Beach Island. Jon has been a consummate champion of Northeast surfing for over 20+ years. When the surf magazines were still in their heyday, Jon would be the go to guy for anything in the Northeast happening. He always fought to get local events, surfers, and creatives to get the greater promotion and exposure when the west coast would ignore us.

On this episode we touch on various facets of his career, including content roles with notable brands like Jetty Surf, Vuori, and Red Bull. Jon elaborates on the unique surf culture in Long Beach Island and the community dynamics that sustain it despite challenges like beach replenishment. We highlight LBI local events like The Clam Jam and The Coquina Surf Jam.  Jon emphasizes the importance of a supportive local surf community. The conversation explores broader themes within surf culture, tracing the surf community's ties with music, and looks ahead to the potential resurgence of Surfer Magazine, aiming to prioritize authentic storytelling and diverse local voices in the surf industry. This episode encapsulates the passion and evolving nature of surf culture, emphasizing the importance of community and localized narratives. We hope you enjoy this episode…

Feeling For The Light with James Katsipis29 May 202401:47:25
James Katsipis is a Montauk-born artist, known for his exceptional ocean photography and stunning visual art. Over two decades ago, Katsipis began traveling around the world shooting and exploring distant shores as an adventure and surf photographer. Growing up in and around the ocean is the natural theme and influence throughout his portfolio. Today, as a fine art photographer and in-demand commissionable artist, James’s work is featured in fine art galleries, campaigns, books and magazines worldwide.

He has recently opened his own gallery in Montauk and it’s absolutely beautiful. James has evolved and grown as a person over the years. He’s really come into his own and has had to overcome some large obstacles along the way. He’s humble, smart, emotionally aware and one of our favorite interviews.
We were recently in Montauk the week he opened his gallery. What follows is an in depth conversation with someone who has made many strides to get where he is and now feels comfortable in his own skin. Our conversation wanders from his evolving attitude over the recent popularity of his home town, to his technique and how he handles the ups and down of life. We are really stoked to present to you our conversation with James Katsipis. Enjoy…

Derek Dunfee: Waking Up In the Sea24 Jun 202101:02:45
Our guest was the 2009 XXL Big Wave Paddle In Award winner, a former big wave charger and now turned photographer, Derek Dunfee. Derek is a lifelong surfer raised on the reefs of La Jolla, California, who went on to travel the world and chase swells, becoming one of the most respected big wave surfers on the planet. At present day he's reached a comfort level in heavy conditions that allows him to take his camera into scenarios most could never imagine. Dunfee's images take you right into the heart of some of the ocean's most powerful moments. It's this Unique perspective that makes his imagery so remarkable, and ultimately timeless.
He has recently launched his second book, Waking up in the Sea, where he goes into detail about surfing and chasing big waves. But also opens up about how the concussions and trauma he suffered from big wave surfing impacts him in his everyday life.

Girl's Can't Surf: Film Director - Christopher Nelius23 Jun 202101:03:46
Girls Can’t Surf shares the untold story of a ragtag bunch of inspired, renegade Australian, American, and South African women surfers who battled against inequality, homophobia, and chauvinism of their fellow sportsmen, sponsors, and institutions. As the sea ebbed and flowed, so did their struggle, fortunes, and notoriety of these pioneering surfers, but nothing kept these radical women from catching their own waves.

On this episode of Swell Season Surf Radio, host Karen Song had the privilege of interviewing the director, Christopher Nelius on the upcoming release and the process of making this film.
The films release couldn’t be timelier as women in surfing continues to rise. With the WSL’s recent pioneering of equal gender pay and the sports debut in the Olympics on the near horizon, the time is ripe to look to the past, to see truly how far the sport has come, and the women who made the sacrifices, laid the foundations, and fought for what it is today.

NY Locals Series: Yury Tsedenov17 Jun 202100:59:29
Our guest this week is someone who has become a staple in the lineup at Rockway and has recently gained notoriety for YouTube videos of testing surfboards under Skipper Surf Reviews. His name is Yury Tsedenov and those in the Rockaway community know him well. His videos are from a more entry level surfer perspective posting instructional clips to board reviews. Sure, any board under an expert level surfer can look good, but Yury provides a fresh and unique perspective and gives the average surfer a much better understanding of their equipment. He’s originally from Russia and came to New York City in 2009 and started surfing in 2013. His level of stoke and froth is contagious and we’re happy to have him on the latest episode of Swell Season.

NY Locals Series: Mike Becker - The Eternal Tinkerer19 May 202101:20:56
At age 16, Mike Becker started shaping boards in his parents' backyard on Long Island. In 1993 he started Nature Shapes. By 1996 he had a website and was distributing boards up and down the East Coast. Host Tyler Breuer has known Becker since the early 1990’s, when they used to compete together in the ESA competitions and surf the beaches of central Long Island together. Over the years, Becker has grown his surfboard business and has followed in the tradition of legendary New York shapers, John Hannon, Charlie Bunger, and Squeak Sanders. But Mike is more than a shaper. He’s a middle school technology-education teacher, surf shop owner, and inventor. Tyler had an opportunity to sit down with Mike while dropping off a surfboard blank to be glassed at the Nature Shapes factory. The two discussed local surf history, new ways to build boards and how he balances a career and family while running multiple businesses. What follows is pure gold with Mike Becker.

Communicating underwater with Jeremy Grosvenor05 May 202101:20:02
eremy Grosvenor defines himself as a Father, Son, Partner, Sailboat Captain, water sports instructor, 'armchair' artist, and "Deliquent." But he is more akin to some mythological sea creature, an apparition on our shores. Have you seen him floating by? A shape-shifter. Perhaps in the form of an orange outrigger canoe, or some neon-colored U.F.O. (unidentified floating object). Car Park Conversations with Chris Coffin22 Apr 202101:25:27
On this episode of Swell Season, we are turning the tables on our regular art and design host Chris Coffin. This episode is hosted by new contributor Mimi Roterman, and she is joined by former guest and artist Kris Chatterson in what we are dubbing the 'car park' episode: a continuation of an after-surf chat from the week before. Chris Coffin’s visual and performative pieces, as well as his creative processes, anchor the conversation as he intimately shares how his experiences as an lifelong open-water swimmer and surfer are throughlines within his highly varied portfolio. The conversation turns down many different avenues, including the topic of the sacredness within gallery spaces that often feel similar to the contemplative experiences of being in the water, and the effect of the pandemic on the artistic process.

We encourage you to explore Chris coffin’s work found on his website at www.chriscoffin.com He will be showing his new work at the 'Here Comes the Sun' exhibition at the Ursa Gallery in Bridgeport, CT from April 24th. Follow him on instagram at @coffinh20.

Finisterre with Tom Kay17 May 202401:16:52
Finisterre which in latin: finis terrae; means 'end of the earth'. Is a brand that exists first and foremost to meet the needs of the cold water surfer both in and out of the water. People like to call them the UK version of  Patagonia but, I’d wager founder Tom Kay must have mixed feelings about those comparisons. To be compared to an industry leader can be flattering but, I imagine Tom believes that they have their own unique voice and story to tell that can differentiate the two.

Tom Kay, the driving force behind Finisterre has been at the game for over 20 years, slowly building a great reputation for quality products that are sustainably minded. The brand has gained a cult following amongst surfers worldwide who I suspect feel underrepresented in the larger surf culture. Tom and his team are currently poised to make big moves in the coming years that will help to drive the surf world to think more sustainably.

I was fortunate enough to have met Tom late last year at an event at their beautiful store in London through my mate Matt Bar of the Looking Sideways Podcast. Tom was extremely friendly and engaging. You could tell this was a very sharp but passionate person. Unfortunately, I had to leave shortly after meeting Tom but the few minutes I got to speak  with him, I felt like I could talk to him all night. I decided I needed to have him on the show. I’m excited  because we are fortunate enough to have Tom as our guest on this episode of the Swell Season Surf Podcast.

Ellie Miller10 Mar 202101:07:22
Ellie Miller is a registered nurse who lives in Brooklyn, NY and has been practicing as a Labor & Delivery nurse for 8 years. She is about to embark on her 3rd career as a midwife and is an adult learner surfer, having started in earnest about 3 years ago. A few months back, Ellie and host, Tyler Breuer had an incident in the water. Tyler had reacted as many experienced surfers tend to.. with condescension and a bit of attitude. But Ellie remained calm and understanding. Then something amazing happened. Instead of ruining each other's sessions, the two had a remarkable conversation about etiquette, appropriate behavior in the lineup and the two have become friends. This episode is a conversation about how surfers can make the lineup better for all and how we appropriately deal with each other when there are incidents while surfing. It also shows how experienced surfers have much to learn from the newer surfers. We hope you enjoy this conversation.

Ep. 5: Kassia Meador20 Jan 202101:43:40
California born and bred, Kassia Meador began surfing at age 14. By 17-years-old, Kassia was a sponsored pro-longboarder, traveling the world. Known for her graceful surf style, Kassia was crowned the "queen of noseriding" by the New York Times and in 2011 ranked 2nd on the WSL women's longboard tour.

Throughout her career as a competitive sponsored athlete, Kassia was actively involved in designing products under the umbrella of her sponsors. In 2013, Kassia left sponsored surfing to build a brand--that focused on quality instead of quantity, working towards more conscious solutions rather than contributing to the larger global issues. In 2015 she launched KASSIA+SURF, a brand for women by women with design rooted in authenticity gained through 23 years experience. She is our guest on this episode of the Swell Season Art & Design Series with Chris & Chris. We dive into her career, her experiences with building an ethical brand and becoming a sound healer. Wavemaker: Nick Hounsfield10 May 202402:03:05
Nick Hounsfield was introduced to surfing by his father Brian in the mid 1970s on his regular visits to Cornwall in the United Kingdom. He has been an avid surfer ever since.Nick became an Osteopath by trade and founded a successful family business with this wife.

But as time wore on and when Nick’s father passed away in the late 2000’s, he started to think about the world a little differently. He began to think about open spaces in nature and the healing aspects of engaging and being in nature. He started to realize that a lot of people's poor health was due to a number of things such as not exercising, not eating well, lack of connection to others, lack of nature connectedness  and so on…

He set about trying to pull these different factors together and look at how he could solve some of these issues through one holistic vision. By chance this was around the same time that Wavegarden released a video of their first technology which would bring waves inland, for the first time.

Nick had a eureka moment. And this was the start of his mythological quest to bring his concept of The Wave to the United Kingdom. It’s been a long journey for Nick, which involves every obstacle you can think of on his way to realizing his vision. Fundraising, permits, Global Pandemic, shaky economy, Brexit, and a stroke. But, Nick persevered and has succeeded in realizing his vision and pioneered a new business model while minimizing its environmental impact and offering an exceptional surf experience with a safe, inclusive space for all surfers. We think you are going to really enjoy this episode. Thank you for listening…

The Sunday Joint Preview Episode07 Sep 202001:09:37
We really pleased to announce a new podcast that Tyler Breuer has been working on with Matt Warshaw of the Encyclopedia of Surfing, David Scales of Surf Splendor Podcasts and my brother Jamie It’s called the Sunday Joint. Think Car Talk meets Encyclopedia of Surf meets High Fidelity. A preview of the first episode is now streaming on WAX. On the premiere episode of the Sunday Joint with Tyler & Jamie Breuer, the boys dismantle, rearrange, and neatly place back on the shelf the 13 Biggest moments in Surf of the 21st century. Then it's on to the St. Christopher surf-themed medallion, which causes Tyler to question his fashion choices as a grommet, as he wore the medallion while also wearing Z-Cavariccis & a white turtleneck. The brothers finish off the episode with a round of "Stump my Bro!" Tyler asks Jamie one question related to Matt Warshaw's Sunday Joint newsletter. Jamies does the same to Tyler. Alcohol is involved. All this and more on the opening episode of the Sunday Joint, an Encyclopedia of Surfing podcast. Distributed by The Surf Splendor.

Jack Farley Hates Single Use Plastics21 Aug 202001:22:57
On this episode of Swell season, we speak to Aussie transplant, Jack Farley about ocean advocacy, Taking 3 for the Sea, Moving to NYC and surfing the Rockaway's. An Australian living in Brooklyn, Jack loves to discuss plastic pollution with others and share the knowledge he has learned while working for Take 3 For The Sea for 6 years. Take 3 is a NGO that aims to conserve the environment and protect wildlife from the impacts of plastic pollution and waste by leading a movement of people connected to the planet.

Since moving on from the Take 3 team earlier this year, Jack gained a certificate of Corporate Sustainability from NYU and has been focused on expanding his understanding of the plastic pollution crisis. He is now currently focussed on the private sector and the oncoming Sustainability Revolution. What is interesting about Jack's story is that it's not that unfamiliar to many of us who moved to NYC. Coming to NYC in search of something and in that search the city shapes and helps define you. Maybe it's the density of this city, the fact that we all have to tolerate and help each other in order for this city to function, but New York has a way of bringing awareness and understanding to many of those who move and live here. We explore this and more on this episode. We hope you enjoy...

Art & Design Series Ep. 2: Ashley Bickerton12 Aug 202002:08:44
On this episode of Swell Season Surf Radio, we continue with our Art & Design Series with Chris Coffin & Chris Labzda. Chris & Chris had the opportunity to interview multi media artist, Ashley Bickerton. This conversation is pure GOLD! Ashley goes into detail about his upbringing in Hawaii, surfing pipeline with some legendary and great surfers, surf culture, his trajectory as an artist as he navigated the decadent 80's art boom in NYC, to his rejecting of the art scene and travelling to Brazil, and finally to Bali. We dive into how his creative process is influenced by surfing and his nomadic lifestyle and how his approach to the contemporary art scene is certainly not the predictable path. This interview is a wild ride! It's a voyeuristic view into the New York art world and reads like Alan Weisbecker's "In Search of Captain Zero." A this and more...

I Heard There Were No Waves in New Jersey with Mike May, Danny DiMauro & Mark Neustadter02 May 202401:41:14
Often overlooked for the warmer waters of its Hawaiian and Californian counterparts, the Atlantic coast of New Jersey has been home to surfing for 135 years, and in turn has held unsung influence over the history of the sport in America. -   Danny DiMauro and Johan Kugelberg.

Our Guests today are the contributors to the latest book from Rizzoli Publishing aptly names: I Heard There Were No Waves in New Jersey: Surfing on the Jersey Shore 1888-1984”. It's a beautiful book and tribute to New Jersey Surfing.

Our guests for this episode is one of the editors and former guest, Danny DiMauro. We also introduce New Jersey surf legend,  and infamous Surf Industry Sales Rep, Mark Neustadter.
We also have former Atlantic City Heavy, Mike May. May is a founding Member of the NJ surfing Hall of Fame and wrote the definitive story on Duke Kahanamoku protege, Sam Reid.

All of them have contributed to this beautiful book. Drawing upon archives of photographs and ephemera from private collections, and from those held in the New Jersey Surf Museum and New Jersey Surfing Hall of Fame, this book is a celebration of East Coast surfing, from its pioneering beginnings at the end of the nineteenth century to its heyday in the 1980s as the scene converged with skateboarding and a shared influence on street style.

It featured insightful texts that illuminate previously unheralded moments in the evolution of the sport, the book not only introduces some of the greatest unseen surf photography of the last century but also lets the Jersey Shore take its rightful place in the history of American surfing.

We hope you enjoy this episode...

NYC Surfer's Unite at Paddle for George Floyd12 Jun 202000:40:14
On June 6th, The Black Surfing Association of Rockaway organized a memorial paddle out for George Floyd. Hundreds of New York Surfers came out to show support for African American community and fight systemic racism. Swell Season was on hand to cover the paddle out and talk to some of the attendees and organizers. What follows are some of the interviews from the paddle out. In order we talk to Lou Harris, Paul Vitale, McHale Anderson, Chad Chadderton & Eric Stafford. We were lucky enough to get a few moments with the founder of the Black Surfing Association Rockaway Chapter, Lou Harris, about organizing the event and his thoughts on the events that lead to George Floyds death. It was a very emotional paddle out but also very heartening. Many of us left with a sense of hope and inspiration.

We just want to thank all of our guests and everyone who came out for the memorial paddle out. This has ignited something for many of us and now we need to put our words and stances into action. We’ve put together a list of some charities you can donate to and some you can volunteer.

Prof. Grace Moon29 May 202001:46:34
Prof. Grace Moon is the founding editor of Velvet Park Media, a queer women's arts and culture multiplatform publishing company that produces print and digital media. She's a painter and teaches fine art and design in the CUNY and SUNY college systems and is currently writing and illustrating a history of surfing before the modern era.
Co-host Karen Song sat down with Grace to discuss her return to surfing in recent years, after a long hiatus. She grew up surfing in Honolulu but gave it up in the late 90's to get her MFA at Pratt in New York City. She never imagined it possible or desirable to surf here of all places. So, she abandoned it for around 20 years. Eventually she returned to the sea and realized there was a lot more of the Aloha spirit than she realized here in NYC.
In the last few months, Grace has surfed her way to conquering cancer. When she was able to do so safely, she surfed during the peak of Covid in NYC, while undergoing chemo. Grace attributes surfing to helping in her healing process.
Throughout the interview, Grace would reveal a thorough wealth of knowledge of surfing in Hawaii, as both a surfer with rich personal experiences, and as an academic and intellectual who has the ability and language to untangle its history from its colonialist patriarchal lens. She is currently working on a book about Hawaiian surf history and we are honored to have her as our guest on this episode of Swell Season Surf Radio.

Music:
Artist: Sonny Chillingsworth
Song: Moe Uhana (Hawaiian Slack Key)
