In this episode, we talk about asset transfers. Asset transfers occur when a nonprofit gifts part or all of its assets to another organization.

In this episode, we feature three conversations. The episode begins with a conversation with Laura Solomon, Founder of Laura Solomon & Associates. The conversation focuses on the legal aspects of an asset transfer. Next, we turn to a story of a specific asset transfer between Uplift Solutions and the Share Food Program. George Matysik, executive director of the Share Food Program, joins the podcast to talk about how this asset transfer became an incubator for innovation at the Share Food Program. Finally, we tell the story of another asset transfer. This time, Michelle Freridge, executive director of the Asian Youth Center, describes how she sought an asset transfer to encourage culture change.

In this episode, I talk with  Paige Flink, former CEO and board member of The Family Place, and Suzanne Smith of Social Impact Architects. They share the story of DVBeds and discuss how alliances can offer better-shared services to clients through coordination. 

DVBeds is a network of independent domestic violence shelters in Texas. Under a systems alignment theory of change, the program aligns the capacities of the organizations to serve the most individuals and families. The network records real-time bed availability and ensures a warm handoff so that domestic violence survivors don’t have to call a list of shelters to find safety.

In this episode, we are talking about shared service collaboratives. Shared service collaboratives occur when organizations coordinate activities to create more efficient or higher-quality operations. This episode features a conversation with Marjorie Murat, CEO of Dallas Afterschool, and Errika Flood-Moultrie, founder and CE0 of Connections Multiplied and Connections Multiplied, Too. They describe the Early Childhood and Out-of-School Time (ECOST) workforce development program, where early childhood, summer, and afterschool programs share a common staffing agency, payroll assistance, and healthcare coverage for staff. They describe how the program was created and how it evolved to meet the needs of participating organizations and staff needs.

In this episode, we focus on mergers, an underutilized tool for social impact in the nonprofit sector. This episode features an interview with Aina Gutierrez, Executive Director of the Rebuilding Exchange, and Lauri Alpern, President of Open Door Advisors. They talk about the process and results of the merger they led between the Chicago Rebuilding Exchange and the Evanston Rebuilding Warehouse. The merger was supported through a grant from the Mission Sustainability Initiative.
