Determined to find ways to make electric boats with both range and speed, he gathered a task force consisting of some of the world’s leading experts within dynamic modelling, hardware design, hydrodynamics, control theory, machine learning, image & signal processing, structural engineering and electrical machines. Our ultimate purpose is to speed up the transition to fossil fuel-free lakes and oceans. A traditional 7.5 m petrol boat consumes about 15 x more fuel than a family car, leaving a heavy footprint on our planet. Multiply that number with the number of ships and boats in seas worldwide and it’s easy to see that the concept of traditional combustion engine boats is simply not sustainable. Our purpose is to re-think efficiency in marine transportation to radically push the performance boundaries of electric boats and ships. At Candela, we care about doing something good for the planet and all its species. Our inspiration comes from the South American eel; a creature defined by strength and grace. We modelled our boats after the eel’s robust head and sleek, streamlined body – for the safety of a strong bow, and the silence of a dynamic, powerful vessel, run entirely on electric energy. We see nature’s design as something to be emulated, something beautiful. At the head of each vessel is a sculpture of the South American eel. We call this sculpture: The Power of Silence. Drawn by William Pacheco and sculpted by Johan Ferner Ström, it pays tribute to our inspiration and serves as a reminder that our vessels work in harmony with nature. | PURE WATERCRAFT ELECTRIC OUTBOARD TAKES GM INTO EB MARKET | 05 Mar 2022 | 00:08:24
Pure WaterCraft teams up with GM to deliver electric powered outboard motor Drive Legs for growing EB Market. But in 2019 they had just delivered a new prototype. The Green Boater spoke with Pure WaterCraft in 2019 at the Seattle Boat Show. This interview uncovers their strategies which proved solid in attracting their mega partner in the EB space - General Motors. Their sleek drive leg design and proprietary components, including battery and charging systems made them stand out from the rest of the pack. Now they are delivering electric powered systems for the recreational pontoon boat market, the bass fishing boat market and the yacht tender RIB market. Their latest designs build off the original ones showcased at the Seattle Boat Show. At that time their demo electric outboard motor was attached to a 90 year old wooden sea sled which could reach silent running speeds of 40 miles per hour! The biggest news comes at their attractive price point - essentially the same as a 40 HP gas outboard, when factoring the price of the motor, gas tank and starter batteries. The power to weight ratio is also close - an important factor in small boat propulsion. The Green Boater applauds their eco friendly offering which replaces fossil fuel systems with all their associated environmental issues. One aha moment they highlighted was the low profile of the drive leg, essentially freeing up the aft view from the boat. No longer staring into the back of monster 4 stroke cowling - their drive leg sits 3 inches proud of the transom. Future enhancements will be drive by wire and a quieter overall system. A mobile app allows the user to configure the system remotely as well as upload feature enhancements from Pure Watercraft. Watch out for this team. GM and Pure Watercraft are poised to be a leader the EB Market for years to come. | HOW TO USE A COMPOSTING TOILET ON A SAILBOAT | 30 Nov 2021 | 00:10:44
Using a compost toilet on a sailboat presents a few challenges which are different than using it on land. In this episode of The Green Boater TV we meet up with Michael and Esther, founders of WayfindersNow, who share their experience using a Marine Composting Head aboard their 35 Foot liveaboard sailboat. They answer the question, how does a composting toilet work on on a boat? They chose to install an Air Head toilet as the best composting toilet for a sailboat to reduce dependency on pumpouts and to better align with their environmental values. Turns out composting toilets are simpler and cheaper to run than traditional marine heads on a boat. Some boaters may think that a composting toilet smell would be of concern. However, Esther claims the compost material has less odor than their traditional head. In fact the material has an aroma similar to plain potting soil. Cleaning a composting toilet is also fast and simple. Michael freshens the solids bin every 3 to 4 weeks - collected in large compostable bags, they are safely discarded in standard waste bins to complete their composting process in the landfill. Liquids are collected separately in the toilet and disposed of daily in a land based facility. After following this series on Composting Toilets for Boats you may also consider this approach. These toilets save money, save the ocean and are simple and odor free to operate About WayfindersNow Disclosure LINKS WayfindersNow Website WayfindersNow Blog - Composting Toilets Air Head Composting Toilet Website Download FREE Green Boating Guide Follow this 3-part series, CONVERTING TO A MARINE COMPOSTING HEAD, for tips and advice from these liveaboard boaters as they walk through each step of their project.
| HOW MUCH TO INSTALL A COMPOSTING MARINE TOILET | 24 Nov 2021 | 00:04:34 | |
In Part 2 of this series “Converting to a Composting Marine Toilet”, we again connect with Michael & Esther, founders of WayfindersNow.com, who discuss the cost and the work required to install an 'Air Head' Composting Marine Toilet in their 35 Foot Sailboat. As full-time liveaboards on a boat, and in keeping with their motto, living small to gain abundance, this project was a perfect fit. They share practical advice on the cost of each component and the work required to remove the old system and then install the new compost toilet. Notably removing the existing septic system had its challenges. But the building in the new compost system was relatively easy. The Air Head compost toilet cost came to approx. $1000 (2021). The additional parts needed were about $300. The total project cost for installing a marine head totaled approximately $1300. This included an extra fan housing from an Etsy shop called 'Johnny Compost Toilet' (link below). Michaels DIY time (to remove and install) was not included in the total project cost. This would need to be added should you hire someone for your project to convert a marine head to a modern composting toilet. => Watch This Episode on The Green Boater TV About WayfindersNow Esther and Michael founded WayfindersNow to share their stories —inspired by Polynesian navigators—aka wayfinders—who sailed thousands of miles without navigational tools and instead, paid close attention to nature by observing the stars, reading wind currents and ripples on the ocean surface to find their direction. | WHY CHOOSE A MARINE COMPOSTING HEAD (TOILET) | 20 Nov 2021 | 00:08:15
In Part 1 of this series “Converting to a Composting Marine Toilet”, we connect with Michael and Esther, founders of WayfindersNow.com, to learn why they chose a Composting Toilet for their marine head conversion project aboard their 35 Foot Sailboat. "A composting toilet is a type of dry toilet that treats human waste by a biological process called composting. This process leads to the decomposition of organic matter and turns human waste into compost-like material. Composting is carried out by microorganisms under controlled aerobic conditions."** ** Wikipedia Composting toilets have been in use for many years but with the growing concerns about our environment these systems have gained in popularity even among boaters. While traditional marine heads are designed to use a combination of pumps, hoses, tanks, macerators and vacuum systems, composting toilets are actually a very simple and basic design. This simplicity appeals to the boating community who each have stories about the mess, costs, maintenance and eco-impact of operating traditional marine toilets. Esther and Michael are true liveaboards and have decided to modify their boat systems in order to live out the WayfindersNow motto "Living Small to Gain Abundance". Choosing to convert to a marine composting toilet fits perfectly in their philosophy and approach to boat life and the environment. They selected the Air Head Composting toilet as their choice as one of the best budget marine toilets combined with the least cost marine head to maintain and operate. In this episode, Part 1 of their toilet conversion project, they share with us how they went about selecting the best composting toilet for their needs. Hopefully this will help you find out how to choose a marine toilet that suits your needs while keeping our oceans clean. | WHY BOATERS MUST AVOID EELGRASS | 04 Oct 2021 | 00:09:20
That seaweed wrapped around the anchor is not only annoying BUT is actually contributing to the destruction of an important habitat for marine life. The Green Boater catches up with Friends of The San Juans who help us understand the importance of Eel Grass for the health of our oceans. Tina Whitman and Jess Newly explain how boaters can help relieve the stress on our marine ecosystem. Turns out that seaweed so annoying to boaters is actual vital to the health and survival of Orca, for one! How? Well Orcas eat salmon, salmon eat herring, who need shallow-water eelgrass and kelp to lay their eggs in. Kill the eelgrass and we kill the food chain that Orcas depend upon. This episode helps boaters understand the role eelgrass plays in our marine food chain and how boaters can adjust their behavior to help protect eelgrass and the precious food chain for our whales. The Green Boater connects with Molly Fraser whose extensive study found a high number of distancing violations by boaters in the Salish Sea. Her 2020 study with the University of Victoria Coastal and Ocean Research Analysis Laboratory (CORAL) looked at small vessel interactions with cetaceans in the Salish Sea. Her findings were published in the Marine Policy entitled: Compliance of small vessels to minimum distance regulations for humpback and killer whales in the Salish Sea. Whales Guidelines BC Keeping 200 metres away from killer whales in BC and the Pacific Ocean and keeping 400 metres away from all killer whales in southern BC coastal waters between Campbell River and just north of Ucluelet* (June 1 – May 31) * Under the Canada Shipping Act. Some exceptions may apply. Vessel operators will also be asked to turn off their echo sounders and turn engines to neutral idle, if safe to do so, when a whale is within 400 metres. Trans-Boundary Guidelines for USA and Canada* Apply to all whales, porpoises, dolphins, seals, sea lions, any animal hauled out and nesting birds. 1. DO NOT APPROACH or position your vessel closer than 200 metres/yards to any killer whale in the U.S. DO NOT APPROACH or get closer than 100 metres/yards to any other marine mammals or birds, whether on the water or on land. 2. BE CAUTIOUS, COURTEOUS and QUIET 3. LOOK in all directions. 4. SLOW DOWN: reduce speed to less than 7 knots when within 400 metres/yards of the nearest marine mammal . 5. ALWAYS approach and depart from the side, moving parallel to their direction of the animal’s travel. 6. IF your vessel is not in compliance with the 100 metres/yards approach guideline (#1), place engine in neutral and allow animals to pass. 7. PAY ATTENTION and move away, slowly and cautiously at the first sign of disturbance or agitation from any animal. 8. STAY on the OFFSHORE side of the whales. 9. ALWAYS avoid going through groups of porpoises or dolphins and hold course and reduce speed gradually to discourage bow or stern-riding. 10. LIMIT your viewing time to 30 minutes or less. 11. DO NOT disturb, swim with, move, feed or touch any marine wildlife. | X-SHORE CEO RENÉ HANSEN: THE MAKING OF A LEADER FOR MARINE EV PART 1 | 13 Jan 2025 | 00:15:49
"Ultimately 70% of the decisions we make in life, at least the important ones, are emotional," declares René Hansen, CEO of X-Shore, a company revolutionizing boating with its fully electric, silent, and connected yachts. In this exclusive interview, we delve into René's inspiring journey and explore the innovative spirit that drives X-Shore. From Snowboards to Sailboats: A Journey of Passion and Purpose René's career path is a testament to his entrepreneurial spirit and unwavering commitment to purpose-driven brands. His journey began in the dynamic world of action sports, where he played a pivotal role in establishing snowboarding as a mainstream sport. "I learned from the beginning to live in the street of Shibuya or Soho, to pick up on trends that will be coming and creating products and communication from it," he recalls, highlighting the importance of understanding consumer behavior and building brands that resonate deeply with their target audience. This experience instilled in him the importance of understanding consumer behavior and building brands that resonate deeply with their target audience. René's career evolved beyond snowboarding, taking him to the forefront of sustainability in various industries. He played a crucial role in transforming a major agriculture company, shifting its focus from simply selling fertilizer to nurturing a sustainable food system. "What happens when a leader changes the perspective so the vision is clear?" René pondered, reflecting on this transformative experience. "What happens down through the ranks when people clearly understand that in this case, they're no longer a fertilizer company, but they actually are a company that feeds, helps feed the world?" By redefining the company's purpose and emphasizing its role in global food security and environmental protection, René witnessed a remarkable transformation. Employee engagement surged, revenue skyrocketed, and the company's stock price doubled. This experience underscored the profound impact of clear, purpose-driven leadership on an organization's success. X-Shore: Leading the Electric Boating Revolution At X-Shore, René is bringing his unique blend of leadership, innovation, and a deep understanding of consumer trends to the forefront of the electric boating revolution. "I think a lot of brand has lost their soul and they are just become driven by analytics and not really about the core values or purpose or the heart, which is the most important thing," he emphasizes. X-Shore, in contrast, is built on a foundation of sustainability and a commitment to creating a seamless and enjoyable boating experience. The company's focus extends beyond simply producing electric boats; it's about crafting a lifestyle that aligns with the values of environmentally conscious consumers. "Ultimately 70% of the decisions we make in life, at least the important ones, are emotional," René asserts. X-Shore recognizes this emotional connection and strives to create boats that not only perform exceptionally but also evoke a sense of adventure, freedom, and connection to nature.
