Welcome to another episode of the Superstar Communicator Podcast, hosted by Susan Heaton-Wright. In this episode, Susan Heaton-Wright sits down with Richard Liverman, the founder of Richer Solutions, a brand consultant and coach who specializes in helping professionals and small businesses articulate their unique value and stand out in competitive markets. Drawing on his wealth of experience with some of the world's biggest brands, Richard Liverman shares practical insights about building personal and business branding, overcoming "British modesty," and strategies to confidently communicate your worth.

Key Points from the Interview:

  • Introduction & Background
Susan Heaton-Wright introduces Richard Liverman and highlights his mission to help talented professionals and small businesses effectively articulate their value (00:00:02 - 00:01:02).

  • The Challenge of Standing Out
Richard Liverman discusses how many businesses have substance but lack the style to communicate it well, likening it to great products with lackluster marketing and the British tendency to be modest about achievements (00:02:10 - 00:04:42).

  • Communication and Visibility in Business
The conversation turns to similarities between small businesses and individuals in corporate roles who don't "grandstand," and how that can lead to them getting lost in the crowd (00:03:39 - 00:04:42).

  • Helping People Buy from You
Richard Liverman reframes sales as helping people to buy, encouraging a mindset shift especially for British businesses, instead of shying away from selling (00:07:35 - 00:07:54).

  • Business Scaffolding & Personal Frameworks
Richard Liverman explains the concept of "scaffolding"—the supportive frameworks (like reviews, routines, strategies) that enable people or businesses to perform at their best. Susan Heaton-Wright shares her "diva contract" story, drawing parallels to the scaffolding idea (00:08:17 - 00:12:04).

  • Rest and Preparation
The importance of rest and preparation as part of the scaffolding needed to maintain top performance is highlighted with examples from sport and personal routines (00:12:05 - 00:13:51).

  • Brand DNA: Authentic Foundations
Richard Liverman introduces the concept of "brand DNA"—understanding and communicating the authentic core of a business or person, including values, "why," and unique strengths. He outlines exercises like the Johari Window to uncover blind spots and enhance self-awareness around brand strengths (00:15:15 - 00:18:23).

  • Feedback and Small Data
The value of both structured and informal feedback (small data) in understanding how others perceive you/your business, helping refine both self-perception and outward communication (00:18:23 - 00:20:07).

  • The Benefits of Clarity
Richard Liverman explains how uncovering your brand DNA and scaffolding not only boosts confidence and communication, but also helps your audience more easily understand and form a connection with you (00:20:37 - 00:22:13).

  • Standing Out in a Crowd
The need to be strategic about networking and to resist comparison or being unsettled by others in your space—a reminder to focus on your unique value (00:24:20 - 00:25:11).

  • Don't Be Boring!
Richard Liverman shares his mantra "Don't be boring!"—encouraging innovation and challenging the "we've always done it this way" mindset (00:25:17 - 00:27:44).

  • Building Presence and Getting Clients
The importance of putting yourself out there, building credibility, and not relying solely on people "just finding you" (00:28:00 - 00:29:51).

  • Top Three Tips from Richard

    1. Don't be boring—challenge yourself to engage others.

    2. Put yourself out there—no one else will tell your story for you.

    3. Get curious—new opportunities and insights come from curiosity (
      00:30:16 - 00:32:13

Why Black History Month is essential in 202529 Oct 202500:30:12

Welcome to the Superstar Communicator podcast with Susan Heaton-Wright! In this powerful episode, Susan returns to the mic after a busy period of running mastermind courses, speaking, and coaching—ready to inspire her audience once again. Today's conversation centers around Black History Month and features award-winning HR professional, speaker, and activist Ije McDougall Together, they dive deep into the meaning and importance of Black History Month, share personal experiences of representation and bias—especially within the UK's healthcare sector—and discuss both the challenges and opportunities facing allies. You'll hear honest stories, insightful perspectives, and practical takeaways on how to celebrate, enjoy, and engage meaningfully with Black History Month. This episode is all about amplifying voices, embracing humanity, and reminding us how representation and allyship can spark real change. Get ready for a conversation that's equal parts thought-provoking and uplifting!

About Ije McDougall: Ije McDougall's story begins in Nigeria, where growing up surrounded by fellow black Nigerians meant concepts like Black History Month were virtually nonexistent—there was no need for it in a society where blackness was the norm. It wasn't until McDougall moved to the UK as an adult that the existence of Black History Month sparked confusion and curiosity. "Why was it necessary?" was the question that lingered.

After sixteen years of living in the UK, McDougall's perspective has evolved. Now, Black History Month is seen as a vital space—an opportunity for black voices to be amplified and heard without interruption. Through personal experience and reflection, McDougall's journey highlights the importance of celebrating black history in contexts where it's often marginalized, and how understanding grows with time and experience. You can contact Ije at IJETALKS.COM

Key points from the interview (bold)

Ije McDougall
00:04:09 - 00:04:25
Why Black History Month Matters in the UK:
"black history Month, from my perspective, is an opportunity for black people to speak uninterrupted is an opportunity for our voices to be amplified."

Ije McDougall
00:04:33 - 00:04:59
The Continued Importance of Black History Month:
"But the reason that we need Black History Month and for our voices to be amplified and for us to be able to speak uninterrupted is because at the moment that is not the case. It is because at the moment our lived experience and our history seems to be disregarded, belittled, or just completely erased."

Ije McDougall
00:07:47 - 00:07:51
Viral Topic: Challenging the Default Status Quo
Quote: "the narrative is still that the status quo, the default position, the norm is white male... but that does not necessarily mean that that is true or that is real"

Ije McDougall
00:10:54 - 00:11:24
Premature Births and Parental Anxiety:
"my first child, she was born at 27 weeks, so she was very, very premature. But the build up to that is things such as, you know, being told it's my first child. So I'm excited, as you can imagine, turning up to the scan with your bladder full because they tell you your bladder has to be full. So I turn up and I am bursting, but nowhere doing this scan. And I'm sitting there and we've ticked all the boxes because we want to know some measurements in regards to."

Ije McDougall
00:17:20 - 00:17:58
Viral Topic: The Impact of Representation in Media:
"every princess, there was no princess that looked like me. There was no good policeman that looked like me. There was no hero that looked like my brother. There was no good teacher, good policeman, wholesome family. They just never look like me. So that is the represent, the lack of representation that I grew up with. However, if we were represented, we were misrepresented as thugs, as criminals, as gang members, we were represented as the one that's not so clever, the comedian of the class, the one who is disposable."

Ije McDougall
00:18:49 - 00:19:01
Viral Topic: Diversity in Media Representation
"It's not that there has been a significant rise that is true in, you know, black and brown people on tv, but it is not to the detriment of anybody else."

Ije McDougall
00:19:16 - 00:19:34
Representation in Advertising:
"if we have a few months where there are no white people on tv, it still would not, it still would not tip it to the detriment of white people because everybody else grew up without representation or with misrepresentation."

Ije McDougall
00:20:47 - 00:21:05
The Reality of Allyship Online:
"I'm not seeing enough people stand up. I'm not seeing enough. You know, allyship is such a buzzword and it's such a useful term because it tells you who people are. But I'm not seeing as many as I wish I was seeing."

Ije McDougall
00:22:25 - 00:22:43
Viral Topic: Authentic Allyship
"You need to understand the issues as a human being. First of all, you do need to gain proximity. Try and get your head around it. And if you, from a human level, you see that, no, that's not fair because another human being shouldn't have to do this, then by all means, it's time to, you know, stand up in your standing up."

Ije McDougall
00:23:31 - 00:23:41
Viral Topic: The Power of Authenticity Online:
"She's not aggressive, she's not fighting anybody, she's not in any debates or arguments. But she just clearly states who she is, what she stands for. And people know."

Recognising others emotions from non-verbal cues28 Oct 202200:39:48

We are joined by Dr Paddy Ross, Associate director of psychology at Durham University. Paddy has done a lot of work on how children learn to read emotions. He highlights the fact that before a certain age, sound is more important than non-verbal cues.

We don't exclusively communicate with what we say but how we say it - and hand gestures, facial expressions and body language play a big role in this. Some highlights include:

1. Wearing a mask (during covid) or not makes little difference in reading emotions because we use our eyes, gestures and body language more.

2. The body is a significant driver for conveying emotions

3. What we don't consider much is what our bodies are doing when we are speaking and communicating. Our body conveys so much emotion.

In this podcast episode Susan Heaton-Wright shares top tips and case studies to ensure you have invaluable engagement with your clients; whether they speak English as their first language or not. * Never assume that because your clients speak some English, they will understand you.

* Be aware of cultural differences. Are there specific topics you you should avoid to prevent your clients being offended.

* Use of examples. Check that the clients will understand the examples you give.

Lessons to lean into your influence with Joel Green14 Oct 202200:34:29

Joel Green is the CEO of pro level training, the National Director of Nike sports camps, a former professional basketball player, and renowned motivational speaker. He endured significant trauma as a child, and experienced unacceptable racism, yet went on to have a successful basketball career and  to alter his mindset and "Filter". This is such a powerful tool he developed, where he was able to focus on the good rather than continue to be impacted by the appalling acts he witnessed and experienced. Three of many highlights are:

1. Use dark moments to get aways from them even more.

2. Get help and support from others and talk. We all need a network of people who will support us.

3.The power of filtering: being your own therapist and self assessing to see what you need, and what you need to get rid of in your life.

And there are many, many gems.

Key Topics
Amy Rowlinson00:03:0000:03:19

"Bound by Purpose: A Timeless Collaboration": "This is a cowritten book which spans generations. I wrote it with my grandfather, but he's no longer alive. How is that possible? Well, I found a couple of years ago, just after my grandmother died, a journal that he'd kept for 5 years as a prisoner of war."

Amy Rowlinson00:12:0500:12:32

Finding Opportunity in Adversity: "There are always going to be obstacles in life. There are always going to be circumstances which are beyond our control, and that's one of the reasons I used my grandfather's story to share his journey because he was confined in captivity for 5 years as a prisoner of war. There were lots of things that he was unable to control, but what he could do was he was able to learn, study, build his skills up."

Amy Rowlinson00:17:3000:17:34

Top tips for Leading New Graduates06 Sep 202200:34:08

Early September is the time new graduates are employed in their graduate roles. These young people are the "COVID generation" whose degrees were studied, in part, online. And it is even more important to support and demonstrate positive leadership to these talented young people.

I am joined by Nick Simon

He is a recent graduate who has researched his friends' experiences and what they need in the way of information and support to thrive in their new role. The discussion highlighted:

* How important it is to provide information on prospects, working hours, whether it is hybrid, remote or in the office work

* The value of the graduate asking questions and feeling it is okay to do this

* That any hardware and software is already ready when the new employee arrives on the first day.

* Socials to get to know colleagues

* A mentor for the new graduate to discuss challenges.

Here is the transcription of the discussion

New Year Outlooks 202227 Dec 202100:07:40

Speaking and sharing your plans for 2022 are powerful ways to connect with others; be more accountable and receive ideas.

In this episode, I share an exercise I do with my friends and family each year. You will need to download the worksheet from www.superstarcommunicator.com/newyearoutlooks

I still have the sheets from previous years and it is fascinating to see how my family has evolved!

The idea is that you are inspired by each of the questions and write what you wish to do related to it. Then share and discuss your answers with others. Here are three points:

1 There is real power in considering NOT targets and goals but more general changes to your lifestyle and values

2. Sharing your thoughts with others provokes discussions. They might be able to assist you; they might learn something more about you.

3. Then listen to others; how could you support them?

Here is the transcript of the podcast.

Good luck with this exercise, and do let me know how you get on.

How to ask the right questions for valuable feedback?17 Jun 202100:37:38

As business owners and developers, we need feedback from potential clients and stakeholders, to ensure what we offer will be of value. But are we asking the right questions to get the most invaluable feedback? Or are those we ask embarrassed to say what they really feel?

This is the principle of Rob Fitzpatrick's book The Mom Test; which is a brilliant read for any business owner or developer. And this podcast is an interview with Rob. He shares with us:

* Why people lie when you ask for feedback

* Why it is important to get honest feedback so you don't waste time on a project that is not of interest

* How to structure the questions to receive more valuable feedback

* The value of small talk.

Hybrid working and communication03 Jun 202100:12:09

There is no doubt that work environments have changed since the Pandemic lockdown started in 2020. Many companies have recognised the possibility of being able to manage individuals working remotely; and many employees do prefer the flexibility of working remotely. BUT the reality is that many businesses want their employees to be working in offices, where there is a better opportunity to share ideas; work collaboratively and build teams. The challenge is that many offices need to rearrange their work spaces to be COVID compliant and there might not be room to accommodate everyone. SO some individuals will have to work remotely, whilst others will be in the office. In other words, a hybrid workforce.

In this forward looking podcast masterclass I share:

* What is Hybrid working

* How can we listen to employees to reassure them

* The challenge of bridging the gap between those working remotely and those in the office

Please remember to grab your copy of the Hybrid leadership checklist at www.superstarcommunicator.com/hybrid where we share top tips on how to use communication in your hybrid working strategy.

1. You can make more impact in virtual meetings by having good lighting; a good mic and push yourself to ALWAYS say something.
