The Mental Health System Has Broken Me (feat. Ashley)16 oct. 202600:55:28

Ashley shares her experience navigating a complicated intersection of trauma, substance use, homelessness, and the systems that are supposed to help but fail us time and time again.

Ashley talks openly about living with the effects of Fetal Alcohol Effects, BPD, anxiety, severe depression, ADHD, complex post traumatic stress disorder (CPTSD), PMOS/PCOS and attachment issues stemming from her many traumatic experiences in the foster system.

We talk about substance use, including being three years clean from meth, fentanyl, and heroin, and the realities of trying to survive while experiencing homelessness in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside (DTES).

While this isn't a true crime podcast it's virtually impossible to explain the DTES without talking about Canada's most prolific serial killer Robert Pickton and his ability to get away with as many as 49 murders of women that police agencies didn't care to look for or investigate - despite having ample evidence pointing right to him. If you are interested in a thorough deep dive I recommend the book On the Farm: Robert William Pickton and the Tragic Story of Vancouver's Missing Women. The stories of these women cannot be forgotten - nor can the countless women, especially Indigenous women, who go missing across Canada to this day for whom justice is never found.

Dr. Shari Allen (@mentalectpharmd) is a psychiatric pharmacist and comes on the show to talk all about psych meds and the importance of personalized treatment

Some of the questions we cover include:

  • How do you know the difference between side effects that will pass and the ones that mean a medication isn't right for you?
  • How can we better advocate to our care providers to be listened to when it comes to how meds are or aren't working for us?
  • What is the most exciting medication advancement for mental health in the last 5 years?
  • Do you see any up and coming medications that might help with borderline personality disorder?
  • What makes SSRIs so different from one another when they have the same mechanism of action?
  • Are PRNs for anxiety as common as they seem to be on TV?

What is Internalized Racism and How Does It Impact Our Mental Health? (feat. Jason)28 août 202600:40:52

Clinical psychology PhD candidate, Jason joins the pod to talk about the impact of internalized racism, his research on self-damaging behaviours (things like self-harm, binge eating, substance use), and his experiences growing up Asian in Canada.

We touch on the concept of minority stress, how badly informed we are on the impact of racism on many health outcomes, and how important it is to participate in research!

If you're eligible, I highly encourage you to reach out to participate in this important study.

The RISE-C study is currently recruiting people who (1) are 16 years or older, (2) reside in Canada, (3) identify as Indigenous, Black, or a person of colour, (3) have been treated differently because of their race, and (4) who habitually do things (or have strong urges) that are not in their best interests (e.g., binge-drinking, engaging in eating disorder behaviour,  suicide ideation, or deliberate self-harm).

If you are interested in participating in the study, you can complete the pre-screening survey using this link: https://uwo.eu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_a8BHB591h11CmUe

Understanding Self-Harm Through a Sensory Lens (feat. Maggie)21 août 202601:08:56

Dr. Maggie Flynn is a Doctor of Occupational Therapy specializing in psychiatric care. She explores how sensory-based interventions can transform our understanding and support for people engaging in non-suicidal self-injury (aka self harm) and those living with BPD.

Together, we unpack the history and evolving role of occupational therapy in psychiatric settings, including how sensory modulation and planning for specific sensory activities throughout one's day can support emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and limit behaviours like self-harm.

Maggie shares innovative perspectives on understanding self-harm through the lens of unmet sensory needs, challenging common assumptions and stigma often faced by people with BPD.

Check out the Skills Lab follow up email about self-soothing to get lots of ideas and resources made by Super Feelers for Super Feelers. The email includes Maggie's full slide deck!

Rejecting the Concept of a Disordered Personality (feat. Caroline)03 juil. 202601:20:29

Caroline rejects the whole notion of anyone having a disordered personality which is exactly why I reached out to her to chat with me on the show.

Sure, there are lots of things we disagree on - but there's actually far more we do agree on despite me finding tons of value of having a BPD diagnosis.

Together we explore the complexities of labelling, Caroline's experience discovering she had autism all along, and the impact of significant trauma at the hands of psychology professionals.

We discuss tons of controversies including:

  1. Do personality disorders exist?
  2. Are we overdiagnosing people with things like autism, ADHD and BPD?
  3. Does the way DSM criteria are defined make sense?
  4. AND MORE!

If anything I hope this conversation inspires you to talk with someone who holds different opinions, because that's how we stop the strong divisions causing the world to crumble.

Transforming Youth Mental Health with DBT: Strategies for Parents, Clinicians and Teachers (feat. Dr. Alec Miller)26 juin 202601:03:40

Dr. Alec Miller is the co-creator of Dialectical Behavior Therapy for Adolescents (DBT-A) and the co-author of DBT Skills in Schools among many other books (see links below). We chat about the impact Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) can have on children, youth and families and how this kind of treatment would have saved me and my family from years of trauma and crisis.

We explore how DBT skills can be introduced earlier in life—not just in therapy, but in schools and at home—to support emotional regulation, reduce risk, and build a life worth living from a young age.

Dr. Miller shares practical insights for parents, educators, and clinicians, emphasizing the importance of validation, structure, skills and positive reinforcement over punishment.

This episode highlights the need for addressing emotion dysregulation and suicidality as a family unit - rather than focusing just on the "patient".

We discuss many different programs and resources in this episode. Here's a list of the main ones linked:

Family Stories: The Cost of Not Being Told About Your Diagnosis (feat. Hilary Cassady)15 mai 202600:58:08

When I read about Maya and Hilary's story in the news my heart sank. I didn't even have to finish the article to know that borderline personality disorder misunderstanding and stigma was at play.

In this episode Hilary (Maya's mom) shares about the ways in which Maya's mental health changed, the help she tried to get, and the final days of her life where the combination of her mistrust of the health system and a subsequent FOI of her records led her to believe there was no hope left. It was that day that she tragically took her own life.

Together, we explore Maya’s journey and the realities of navigating a system where critical information wasn’t fully seen, shared, or understood and the profound impact of hidden or missed diagnoses, and how a lack of communication across providers and supports can change the course of so many lives.

At the heart of this episode is a mother’s experience of loss — and the ongoing grief that comes with it. We talk about the “what if’s” that linger, the questions that don’t have answers, and the emotional weight of trying to make sense of it all.

Personality Disorder Assessment and Diagnosis (feat. Dr. Steven Huprich)08 mai 202601:05:44

Dr. Steven Huprich, a leading clinical psychologist, researcher, and professor, specializing in personality disorder assessment, diagnosis and treatment.

Together we unpack the differences between the DSM-5 and ICD-11 models of diagnosing personality disorders and how those differences impact people living with personality disorders and those who treat them.

We also take a closer look at what a thoughtful and effective clinical assessment should include and we dive into some of the biggest challenges in diagnosing personality disorders, including:

  • The impact of age and development in personality
  • The limitations of self-reporting in diagnosis
  • The role of context in understanding personality
  • The differences between how we see ourselves vs. how others perceive us

BPD Relationships: Brittany and Justin23 janv. 202601:13:47

Last year Justin was diagnosed with BPD following a really chaotic period of their relationship that they had to work through together.

BPD Relationships: Aaron and Laurie26 déc. 202501:12:11

We're kicking off a brand new called BPD Relationships!

In this series we're diving into one of the most misunderstood areas of life for people living with Borderline Personality Disorder.

Relationships are often where stigma against people with BPD shows up the strongest — but we’re here to challenge that narrative. In this mini series we'll unpack the myths and misconceptions about BPD and romantic relationships, exploring what healthy love can truly look like when one partner lives with BPD.

In this first episode Shannon interviews Laurie and her husband Aaron! They talk about the importance of communication, understanding, and maintaining individuality, as well as the role of support systems and personal growth in building strong, loving partnerships.  Aaron and Laurie share their reflections on navigating the complexities of BPD when you've found your person and how they support each other through all of life's challenges.

Whether you live with BPD, love someone who does, or simply want to understand relationships through a more compassionate lens, this mini series is for you.

We want to show everyone that healthy relationships with BPD exist and provide hope to all of you who might be feeling like they aren't possible for you.

BPD Symptoms: ICD Criteria 12 déc. 202501:00:02

Well it's officially our final episode of the BPD Symptoms Series! In this episode we technically aren't talking about DSM criteria for borderline personality disorder but instead we're talking about the different diagnostic model that is used primarily outside of North America.

We specifically talk about the concept of having a severity scale/continuum for personality disorders and the potential pros and cons for people living with BPD.

We also dive into three symptoms that aren't in the DSM that we find particularly interesting:

1. A view of self as bad, inadequate, guilty and contemptible

2. A sense of alienation and loneliness

3. Rejection sensitivity, problems with trust, misinterpretation of social signals.

And of course as we wrap up the series we get all mushy about how much fun we've had and how much we love each other.

The Impact of Intergenerational Trauma on BPD (feat. Gwen)04 déc. 202500:58:43

Gwen's story is one that many Super Feelers can relate to. With many generations of complex trauma that impacted each generation in different ways, she came to the realization that the symptoms of borderline personality disorder (BPD) go back at least as far as her maternal grandmother, her mother and now herself.

BPD isn't an excuse for behaviours, it's an explanation - something that Gwen has had to come to terms with while learning more about the disorder, herself, and what it means to live as a Super Feeler with BPD.

Gwen was recently featured on a brand new documentary style podcast all about mental health called Brain Stories. Listen to her episode there to get even more about her story in a really beautiful storytelling format on your favorite podcast platforms or by clicking here. Be sure to follow their show to hear first person stories about a variety of mental illnesses - not just BPD!

BPD Symptoms: Self Harm28 nov. 202501:07:41

Self-harm is something that the majority of people with BPD experience at some point in their lives (prevalence estimates range from 50-80+%).

We decided to separate suicide and self-harm for the purposes of this mini series because the two things are often conflated and are actually super distinct phenomena.

Together we explore our personal experiences with self-harm, how they different from suicidality, and how we've learned healthier coping mechanisms.

Throughout our discussion we emphasizes the importance of harm reduction  and the need for understanding and compassion in addressing self-harm (aka don't freak out if someone is self-harming. That doesn't help).

Please listen to this episode with care. While we usually don't talk about self-harm methods on the podcast we did briefly in this conversation.

BPD Symptoms: Dissociation14 nov. 202500:58:40

Dissociation is one of the hardest to explain BPD symptoms. It looks different for everyone and sometimes we don't even know when we are in a dissociated state.

In this episode Laurie, Shane, Shannon and Kat discuss the complexities of dissociation by sharing our personal experiences and insights on how dissociation manifests and impacts us. We also explore how dissociation is often times a coping mechanism stemming from complex traumatic experiences and the fine line between it being a helpful protective factor and a "symptom" to be a target of change.
