S2 E25: The Creative Alchemy of Groot Phesantekraal & The Flavourist13 Aug 202600:39:51

Wine doesn't always have to stay in the wine glass.

In this episode of SUITCASE & CHARDONNAY, Renate Engelbrecht chats to Groot Phesantekraal winemaker Richard Schroeder and Julian Short, aka The Flavourist, about their exciting collaboration bringing together the worlds of winemaking and mixology.

The duo has created a collection of cocktails using Groot Phesantekraal wines, with each creation offering a different perspective on the character and versatility of the estate’s wines.

With National Shiraz Day taking place on 21 August, Groot Phesantekraal’s restaurant is putting the spotlight on the Syrah Sour this month - a layered cocktail combining Irish whisky, honey, fresh lemon and a float of Groot Phesantekraal Syrah.

But behind this drink and the other cocktails they’ve created is a much bigger story: one of friendship, creativity and craftsmanship. Richard and Julian talk about their shared curiosity, the journey from vineyard to bar, and why respecting the integrity of the wine is at the heart of their collaboration.

We also chat about the inspiration behind the cocktail series and what’s coming next - including September’s refreshing Farmhouse Spritz, made with the estate’s MCC.

A conversation for wine lovers, cocktail enthusiasts and anyone who enjoys discovering a new way to experience South African wine.

S2 E18: Slow Travel - Sailing Holidays for the Win17 Jun 202600:38:22

In a world that often celebrates busy itineraries, packed schedules, and ticking destinations off a bucket list, a growing number of travellers are seeking something different. They're craving slower, more immersive journeys that allow them to be fully present, savour each moment, and experience destinations in a more meaningful way. It's a movement that's closely aligned with the rise of the Blue Health travel trend — the growing recognition that spending time in, on, or near water can have profound benefits for our mental wellbeing, stress levels, and overall sense of happiness.

For years there's been a perception that sailing holidays are reserved for experienced sailors, ultra-luxury travellers, or those with extensive maritime knowledge, but the reality is that it is far more accessible than you think — and far more exciting!

Imagine waking up to a different view every morning, swimming in crystal-clear bays before breakfast, exploring hidden coves that larger tourist groups never reach, and spending uninterrupted time with family and friends while disconnecting from the constant noise of everyday life. Sailing offers a unique opportunity to slow down, reconnect with nature, and embrace travel at a gentler pace.

Today, we're diving into this fascinating world with Nicci Welgemoed from Sunsail. We'll be unpacking the realities of modern sailing holidays, exploring why they're becoming increasingly popular among experience-led travellers, and discovering how sailing can offer one of the most authentic forms of slow travel available today.

Because, often the moments we remember most are not the expensive gifts. They're the conversations, the shared experiences, and the feeling of being fully present.

Episode 34: Behind the Scenes of SA’s Creative Industry: KAMERS/Makers on Fast Fashion & the Future of Local26 Nov 202500:24:58

This episode takes us into the heart of South Africa’s creative economy, because the things we wear, the objects we cherish, the spaces we curate, and the flavours we love all begin with a maker — a real human with a real story.

And those stories are under threat.

I’m joining you from the vibrant KAMERS/Makers market, a cornerstone of local craftsmanship and one of the most influential creative platforms on the continent. With me is Ben-Carl Havemann, CEO and Co-Owner of KAMERS/Makers, and together we unpack a pressing issue affecting consumers, entrepreneurs, and the broader South African economy: the rapid influx of cheap imported goods and what it means for our artisans, our jobs, and our cultural identity.

This conversation is an invitation — not just to shop local, but to understand why it matters.

Episode 33: What No One Tells You About Working For Yourself18 Nov 202500:35:04

This episode is a little different… It’s just you and me, diving into the truth about working for yourself. Not the Instagram version, not the highlight reel — the real, layered, beautiful, messy, and wildly rewarding journey of building a creative business from scratch.

If you’ve ever wondered what it actually takes, what no one tells you, or what I’ve learnt while juggling a blog, a podcast, a freelance writing career, being a wife and mom, the odd social media post and some consulting on the side — this one’s for you. I’m answering the questions I get asked most often, from clients and curious listeners and even some close family members. While much of this episode might be based on my work under the SUITCASE & CHARDONNAY brand, it’s relevant to anyone building a business, dreaming of working for themselves or wanting to understand how it works to juggle it all.

Episode 32: Taj Hotels Expands Into Africa10 Nov 202500:14:48

The Taj Cape Town has a way of drawing one in, spoiling you to bits and then inspiring you to go out and explore. Its impressive façade is one that tells many a story of the Mother City, with the 5-star hotel occupying a building that used to be the South African Reserve Bank. I’ve stayed at this Taj Hotels property before, but following recent refurbishments of its rooms and suites, I couldn’t resist revisiting.

While I was there, I sat down with Mark Wernich, the Cluster General Manager Africa and Business Development Africa for sub-Saharan Africa for the Taj brand. Apart from Taj Cape Town’s refurbishments, the hotel brand has some exciting expansions up its sleeve...

Episode 29: Exploring The Claremont by Sabi Sabi Collection21 Oct 202500:17:11

During a recent trip to Cape Town, one of SUITCASE & CHARDONNAY host, Renate Engelbrecht's first stops was The Claremont. Many might not have heard of it yet, since it’s just opened its doors on the 1st of October 2025. Renate was lucky enough to be one of the firsts to experience the magic of this boutique hotel – a heritage building designed by architect, Magdalena Gertrude Sauer, who was the first woman to practice architecture in South Africa; a pioneer in her field.

The Claremont forms part of the Sabi Sabi Collection and also happens to be their first Cape Town property, opening up a whole new world of opportunities and avenues for travellers planning to visit South Africa through the brand. Now, you can also include the beauty of the Cape in your itinerary and spend a few days exploring the glorious fynbos and wonderful wines that this part of South Africa has to offer (among a multitude of other things!)

Renate sat down with the Marketing Director of Sabi Sabi Collection, Jacques Smit (with a glass of Buitenverwachting Chardonnay in hand, of course, as the hotel is located mere minutes away from the Constantia Wine Valley). Smit shed some light on what travellers visiting The Claremont can expect and how he sees this beautiful boutique hotel fitting into the bigger picture of travelling with the Sabi Sabi Collection.

Episode 28: Behind the Drinks at Beyond with Jennifer Hugé14 Oct 202500:21:29

Jennifer Hugé is no stranger to South Africa’s service and beverage scene. In fact, she’s the Service & Beverage Director and one of South Africa’s top restaurant groups – FYN – and brings so much more than just a glass of wine to the table. SUITCASE & CHARDONNAY host, Renate Engelbrecht sat down with her recently, following a six-course meal at Beyond Restaurant, located at the beautiful Constantia-based Buitenverwachting.

This wine farm was founded by Simon van der Stel, the first governor of the new Dutch colony at the tip of Africa, and is on the east-facing slopes of the Constantiaberg, a mere 12km from False Bay. The farm originally formed part of the Constantia Estate and even though it changed hands all too often, it flourished as a wine farm from the start. In fact, it flourished beyond expectation, which is why Beyond Restaurant’s name is so apt.

In this episode, we dive into the backstories of some of the drinks Jennifer served during Renate's visit and the inspiration that motivates her constantly evolving beverage menus - not only at beyond, but also the FYN Group’s other restaurants.

Episode 26: Inventure - Exploring the Unchartered Territory Within29 Sep 202500:35:29

Are you searching for ways to truly slow down? Perhaps you crave quiet moments, fewer distractions, and meaningful ways of getting to know yourself better.

Too often, life feels too busy, too full – like an endless rat race. Many of us have unlearned the art of being alone with ourselves, while screens dominate our attention. But there’s hope – and sometimes it lies in stepping away.

In this episode, Organisational Psychologist Julie Robinson shares her journey of embracing slow living in the Karoo and creating transformative spaces for others to do the same. From screen-free travel experiences to powerful off-the-grid retreats in South Africa, Julie shows us how slowing down can become a practice of joy, self-discovery, and connection.

Whether you’re ready for a five-day Karoo slow travel inventure or a shorter introspective travel experience in the city, there’s something for everyone who longs to venture inward, live mindfully, and discover the richness of the present moment.

Together, we explore:

• A new, off-the-grid retreat in the Karoo, South Africa, designed for deep self-reflection and stillness.

• How to balance a busy city lifestyle with mindful travel and intentional slow living practices.

• Tips on creating slow corners in your home to cultivate everyday calm.

This is more than travel – it’s a digital detox retreat in South Africa, an invitation to reconnect with yourself, and a reminder that sometimes the most meaningful journey is the one within.

Episode 22: Featuring dermatologist and author, Dr. Eyal Levit and his book, The King's Race02 Sep 202500:26:46

In this episode (recorded on Zoom with time difference, so excuse the sometimes dodgy sound), I welcome Dr. Eyal Levit - a dermatologist, but now also author of a children's book, to the SUITCASE & CHARDONNAY podcast.

We dive straight into the importance of parents and children reading books together for opportunities to discuss the narrative, as well as the inspiration behind the book.

The book - The King's Race - follows the journey of a young horse called Spots, and highlights the ebb and flow of life and the lessons we learn from it beautifully.

Soon to be launched, The King's Race is a wonderful gift for those Christmas stockings (yes, we're talking Christmas already!) and a great opportunity for parents and children to spend quality time together.

Under the lifestyle side of the SUITCASE & CHARDONNAY brand, you would have noticed that I am very serious about approaching life at a slower pace and teaching (and allowing) your children to do the same. Books can make this process very easy and The King's Race definitely deserves a spot in your family's children's book collection. It's right up there with books like The Little Prince, teaching lessons through storytelling and subtly opening up conversations around topics like kindness, hardship, friendship and grit.

Episode 19: Chris Bertish - When Adventure Meets Adversity19 Aug 202500:30:26

In this episode of SUITCASE & CHARDONNAY, I sit down with world-renowned adventurer, author, speaker and ocean conservationist, Chris Bertish - a man who has redefined what’s possible on the water and in life.

Fresh off the launch of his ambitious TransCat Expedition: Oceans Without Borders, Chris shares the story behind his bold decision to sail 100 nautical miles into the Pacific before making the tough call to turn back. Instead of seeing this as a setback, he reframed it as an opportunity: to strengthen his vessel, refine his strategy and return stronger, safer and more impactful than ever in 2026.

From surfing Mavericks in California, to paddling solo across the Atlantic, to becoming the first person to wing foil across the Pacific, Chris’ life is filled with record-breaking achievements. But what truly inspires is his mindset - his ability to face adversity, pivot when needed and transform challenges into opportunities for growth and purpose.

In our conversation, we explore:

  • The lessons Chris has learned from the ocean about resilience, courage and adaptability.
  • Why postponing the TransCat Expedition was an act of strength, not defeat.
  • The powerful link between adventure, innovation and ocean conservation.
  • How to reframe life’s obstacles into opportunities for greater impact.

This episode isn’t just about sailing or records - it’s about perspective, resilience and choosing to live bravely.

Episode 15: The Modern Appeal of Estate Living in South Africa22 Jul 202500:32:22

*This episode is brought to you by Pecanwood Estate, a gated golf and lifestyle estate that allows for wellness, balance and peaceful community living near Johannesburg.

If you’ve ever caught yourself thinking about escaping the city lifestyle and wondered what your life might look like when you live in a gated lifestyle estate in South Africa, this episode’s for you.

In today’s fast-paced world, more and more South Africans are seeking a different rhythm – one rooted in intention, nature, community and safety. As I stepped into Pecanwood Estate’s Boathouse Restaurant for this episode’s conversation with Shoni Makhari, one of the estate’s directors, I was instantly transported to the Seychelles’ capital, Mahe. While there is no ocean at this peaceful estate near Johannesburg, there certainly is enough water to give it a similar feel and the incredible calmness of the environment I stepped into at this family-friendly lifestyle estate was magical. In this episode, Shoni and I step into the gates of this estate - one of South Africa’s more established lifestyle estates - not just to find out about its offering and the benefits of living in a South African estate, but also to explore why choosing a modern estate lifestyle like this might be one of the most meaningful decisions for those craving a richer, more connected, slow lifestyle.

Episode 14: How Travel Has Changed Our Perspective On Family15 Jul 202500:55:37

Today’s episode is extra special - and a little more personal - because I’m joined by someone who knows every detour, every passport stamp, and every packed-and-repacked suitcase of this journey… my husband, Wikus Engelbrecht.

Whether chasing sunsets with our children or navigating lost luggage and tiny rental cars, travel has a way of revealing what really matters. And often, it’s not the destination - it’s the people you share it with.

So, in this episode, we’re swapping stories, asking big (and slightly uncomfortable) questions and reflecting on how travel has shaped not just the way we see the world, but the way we see each other and our family.
