#243: Sepsis Bundle NCLEX Review08 Sep 202200:24:33
Sepsis is a life-threatening medical emergency that is caused by a massively overblown response to infection. Sepsis affects more than 1.7 million adults in the U.S. each year and is a leading cause of death in U.S. hospitals. In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in three patients who die in the hospital have sepsis. Early recognition and treatment are necessary to improve patient outcomes. Early goal directed therapy for sepsis was first introduced in 2001, and the Surviving Sepsis campaign was launched in 2002. Since then, guidelines for the management of sepsis have been developed and continually improved upon. These guidelines are often referred to as “the sepsis bundle.” Want to maximize your learning by reading this information, too? Check out the article and references here. RATE, REVIEW AND FOLLOW! #236: Medical Terms You Don’t (Yet) Know04 Aug 202200:42:45
When I was a student (and new nurse) I remember hearing medical terms all the time that would make me think, “I should probably know what that means, but I’m too embarrassed to ask.” And I hated how that made me feel… lost, incompetent, out of the loop, and unsure of myself. You can imagine what feeling this way did to my confidence level. Yep…pretty low sometimes. In this episode I’m diving into some common medical terms that students (and even experienced nurses) often feel a little unsure about…terms like: Sensitivity vs specificity Hypoxia vs hypoxemia Crystalloid vs colloid And let’s not forget medical slang like “the gap,” “rainbows,” and “Christmas trees” After listening to this episode, you’ll be absolutely fascinating at your next cocktail party and probably feel a lot more confident at the bedside, too! Straight A Nursing Podcast Trailer04 Jun 202400:04:19
In this show, Nurse Mo breaks down a wide range of nursing school concepts so they’re easy to understand. Each episode aims to help nursing students improve their study techniques, pass nursing school exams, and feel more confident in clinical. If you’re nervous about nursing school, not “getting it” in lecture, or feeling overwhelmed with all the information you have to learn, this podcast will help you optimize your study time so you can learn more with less stress. While nursing school is challenging, it doesn’t have to be impossible. When concepts are explained in a way that “just makes sense”, nursing students have better recall on exams, feel more confident working with patients in clinical, and are better prepared for NCLEX. Nurse Mo understands the struggles nursing students face and draws on more than 11 years of clinical experience to make nursing school less intimidating. Each episode removes the “fluff” and focuses on the key things a nursing student (and nurse) needs to know about a variety of disease conditions. The show also provides tips for succeeding in nursing school, guidance for students and new nurses, and insider information to help you excel at the bedside. Learn more about your ad choices. Nurse practitioners are advanced practice nurses that fulfill a variety of roles in the healthcare setting. Having an NP license enables a nurse to write orders, prescribe medications, diagnose health conditions and, in some states, can even operate independently without physician oversight. I had the great pleasure of interviewing Latrina Walden, CEO and founder of Latrina Walden Exam Solutions. I hope this inspires you to pursue your dream of becoming an NP! #229: BONUS! What if your teacher is terrible?15 Jul 202200:30:13
First off, let me say that I 100% think most nursing school instructors are passionate about teaching and sincerely want their students to succeed. With that said, you will occasionally get a teacher that you either think is a “bad teacher” or who just doesn’t teach in a way that resonates with you. Some students may take this as an opportunity to give away their power and just resort to complaining and feeling resentful…but not you. The truth is, no one is perfect and the key is how you react when your instructor is “not so great.” Register for the FREE Workshop: Learn 5 key ways nursing students struggle and what you can do instead!
