#521: Prone Positioning Basics: Preventing Complications in ARDS Patients22 oct. 202600:49:21
Prone positioning can be so intimidating when you're a nursing student or a brand-new ICU nurse. In this episode, I'm covering the basics and potential complications of prone positioning so you actually understand why we do it, rather than just feeling like you’re trying to keep up. Imagine walking into your patient's room and finding them lying on their stomach instead of their back. They are intubated and sedated, with cushions tucked around their face, chest, and hips, and the monitor leads are sitting on their back. It’s startling if you've never seen it! But it’s also one of the most effective nursing interventions we have for critical care patients fighting ARDS or severe respiratory distress (I saw this a ton with COVID-19 patients, too). Hit play to review what you actually need to know about prone positioning for your nursing school exams, clinicals, and NCLEX, including: What is prone positioning? The "why" behind the pathophysiology and indications of prone positioning Awake Prone Positioning (APP) Two ways to prone a ventilated patient (Roto-Prone beds vs. the manual "burrito method") High-risk nursing complications to watch for Preventing unplanned extubation: Safety checks used to protect the airway during a turn Protecting skin integrity: Crucial nursing interventions for pressure injury prevention How to approach urgent situations with limited access, including emergency response steps and CPR in the prone position Why you should take advantage of hands-on training whenever it's offered Current evidence-based practice guidelines you'll see in the ICU FREE CLASS - If all you've heard are nursing school horror stories, then you need this class! Join me in this on-demand session where I dispel all those nursing school myths and show you that YES...you can thrive in nursing school without it taking over your life! 🎧 #137: The Basics of Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) 🎧 #64: Atelectasis Nursing Interventions 🎧 #46: V/Q Mismatch Explained Simply 🎧 #488: The Perfusion Problem 💕Did you love this episode? #520: MMM - Compartment Syndrome: Risk Factors and Early Signs19 oct. 202600:07:03
By the time pulses disappear in compartment syndrome, real damage has already happened. In the episode, I'm talking about the window before that, because that's where you actually have a chance to catch it before the patient suffers serious consequences. Hit play to review who is most at risk, the two most reliable early cues, and the practical takeaway to help you catch compartment syndrome early. ___________________ Nursing School Survival Blueprint - Feeling overwhelmed or unsure how to approach nursing school? #519: MMM - Three Types of Hyponatremia12 oct. 202600:07:21
Your patient has low sodium, what should you assess before you react to that sodium value and why? The answer to this trips up a lot of students and new nurses. You should assess volume status before reacting to a sodium value, because hyponatremia actually breaks down into three different patterns, and each one points to a different cause and a different fix. Hit play on this short episode where I review the three types of hyponatremia, including their causes and fixes. For a more in-depth dive into the causes, signs & symptoms, and treatments of hyponatremia, listen to episode 17. ___________________ Nursing School Survival Blueprint - Feeling overwhelmed or unsure how to approach nursing school? #518: Noncardiogenic Pulmonary Edema for Nursing Students08 oct. 202600:30:27
Picture this: You're a nurse in the PACU and are receiving a patient who is a 34 year old male with a past medical history of obesity and loud snoring reported by his spouse. Although he does not have diagnosed obstructive sleep apnea, you suspect it. He was given general anesthesia with some ketamine mixed in during an elective septoplasty. Once he gets to the PACU, he has a rapid onset of significant respiratory distress. His SpO2 is dropping even with supplemental oxygen, he has pink frothing sputum, and diffuse crackles bilaterally. What's going on with this guy? How serious is this? In this episode, I'm breaking down noncardiogenic pulmonary edema, including: - Pathophysiology and common causes - Two types of negative-pressure pulmonary edema (NPPE), which is the cause you'll see most often in the OR or PACU - Who is most at risk for NPPE - Nursing care for patients with noncardiogenic pulmonary edema using the Straight A Nursing LATTE method which includes common signs and symptoms, priority assessments, key tests utilized to evaluate the condition, treatments, and follow-up education - A side-by-side breakdown of cardiogenic pulmonary edema vs noncardiogenic pulmonary edema with references to the patient mentioned above and the patient mentioned in episode #515, so you'll walk away knowing exactly how to quickly tell these two conditions apart at the bedside If you've ever looked at a patient with crackles and hypoxemia and immediately thought "heart failure," this episode is going to change how you approach that assessment. Episodes mentioned: #515: Cardiogenic Pulmonary Edema #137: The Basics of Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) To thrive in nursing school, you need a study system that helps concepts like this actually stick, instead of just memorizing lists of symptoms. #516: MMM - Applying to Nursing School? Don't Underestimate The Entrance Exam28 sept. 202600:07:48
If you're applying to nursing school, your GPA probably feels like the whole application. And yes, your GPA is important, but it's only one piece of your application. Most competitive nursing programs are weighing several other factors right alongside your GPA, and the entrance exam is the one that trips up more applicants than you'd expect. If your school requires you to take the TEAS, I highly recommend investing in test prep materials from ATI. They write the exam so you know your time will be spent studying what's actually on the test. ATI has a variety of TEAS Prep packages and they offer 15% off to Straight A Nursing fans. Full disclosure that I earn a small commission when you buy TEAS Prep packages from my link and use the coupon code SAN15 at checkout (no extra cost to you, just savings 🙌). #515: Cardiogenic Pulmonary Edema24 sept. 202600:28:39
A patient is stable going into surgery and comes out of anesthesia fine. Twenty minutes later in the PACU, she's gasping for air, her neck veins are bulging, and she's coughing up pink, frothy sputum. Yikes! What just happened? And why did it happen so fast? In this episode, I'm breaking down cardiogenic pulmonary edema, including: - A walk through the actual blood flow pathway that explains why pressure backs up into the lungs in the first place - Two distinct processes that can cause cardiogenic pulmonary edema: ☝️ the classic fluid overload picture <-- you probably learned about this in school ✌️ vascular failure <-- a pattern less commonly taught, where a patient can develop flash pulmonary edema without carrying any excess fluid at all. - Common signs and symptoms - Priority assessments - Key tests utilized to evaluate the condition - Treatments - Follow-up education - References to the patient described above, so you can see exactly how her history, her labs, and her imaging all tell the same story once you know what you're looking at. If you've ever memorized 'crackles plus JVD equals heart failure' without really understanding the mechanism behind it, this episode connects those dots. To thrive in nursing school, you need a study system that helps concepts like this actually stick instead of just memorizing lists of symptoms. I get you started building that system with my free Nursing School Survival Blueprint. 👉 Download the Blueprint 💕Did you love this episode? #500 - Sympathetic vs. Parasympathetic Nervous System - Your Secret Weapon for Pharm16 juil. 202600:36:47
In this episode, I break down the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems in a way that goes way beyond the vocabulary test version. You'll learn: - what triggers each system - which neurotransmitters and receptors are involved - what happens to each major body system when one is dominant, - how understanding this makes drug mechanisms predictable instead of mysterious. By the end, you'll be able to look at medications like atropine, epinephrine, metoprolol, and albuterol and understand exactly why they do what they do, including the side effects. If pharmacology has felt like a wall of memorization up until now, this episode is the key that changes that. LINKS MENTIONED: Nursing School Survival Blueprint - It's free & it walks you through how to study with intention, how to reduce cognitive load in real study sessions, and how to build the kind of understanding that actually shows up on your exams and in clinical. #485: Why Nursing School Feels Overwhelming - Learn how cognitive load theory explains why you struggle to retain information no matter how much you study — and the five-step approach that helps nursing students study smarter, not longer. #494: 6 First Semester Nursing School Mistakes18 juin 202600:37:09
Over the years I've seen students struggle and students thrive, and what becomes clear pretty quickly is the students who struggle tend to repeat the same handful of mistakes. And the sneaky part? Most of them won’t feel like mistakes when you’re making them. It’s not that you're not smart enough, or not working hard enough, or not meant for this. Nursing school rewards a specific kind of engagement with material and most students were never shown what that looks like. I'm covering six of the most common first semester mistakes I see, and of course, what to do differently. You definitely don't want to miss this one if you're heading into nursing school. #488: The Perfusion Problem: Why Your Patient is Deteriorating 21 mai 202600:51:15
You know that moment when you walk into a patient’s room and something just feels… off? Not wrong in a pull-the-crash-cart way. Just… different. Their blood pressure is trending down a little. They’re not quite as sharp as they were two hours ago. Urine output isn’t great. And your brain starts doing that scrambling thing — flipping through every diagnosis you’ve ever learned, trying to figure out what category this falls into. Here’s the thing: that scrambling feeling? It’s not a sign that you don’t know enough. It’s a sign that you’re trying to find the diagnosis before you’ve found the pattern. This episode is about the pattern.   Perfusion is one of those foundational concepts that shows up everywhere — cardiac, renal, neuro, sepsis, shock — and yet it rarely gets taught the way it needs to be. Not just “perfusion means blood flow” but what actually happens when it fails, how your patient’s body responds, and what that looks like when you’re standing at the bedside at 10am wondering if you need to make a phone call. In this episode, we go deep. Like, actually deep — the cellular level, the four components of the delivery system, why blood pressure is often the last thing to drop, all four shock types through one unified framework, and three clinical cases that will change how you think about patient assessment.   By the end, you’ll have a question you can ask about any patient that will immediately anchor your thinking and help you catch deterioration earlier than you thought possible.   Ready to think like a nurse? Hit play.   👉 If this episode helps you see patient assessment differently, the Nursing School Survival Blueprint is a great next step. It’s the free guide that shows you exactly how to build the kind of structured, clinical thinking that makes episodes like this click — and stick. #485: Why Nursing School Feels Overwhelming07 mai 202600:27:37
You studied all weekend. You put in the hours. And you still walked out of that exam feeling like something just didn’t click. If that’s ever been you (or if you’re about to start nursing school and you’re already worried it will be) this episode is going to change how you think about studying. Because the problem isn’t how much you’re studying. It’s what’s happening in your brain while you do it. In this episode, Nurse Mo breaks down cognitive load theory — the neuroscience behind why nursing students get overwhelmed — and walks you through a practical, step-by-step approach for studying in a way that your brain can actually process and retain. In this episode you’ll learn: •  Why effort alone doesn’t produce learning — and what does •  The three types of cognitive load (and which one is actually your friend) •  The four most common habits that silently overload your brain •  A five-step study approach designed to work with your brain, not against it This isn’t about studying harder. It’s about finally understanding why the way you’ve been studying isn’t working, and what to do differently. 👉 Grab the free Nursing School Survival Blueprint: straightanursingstudent.com/blueprint ___________________ Full Transcript - Read the article and view references 💕Did you love this episode?
