321: Social Activism - A case study in language learning02 Jul 201900:53:58

In this episode, Olly speaks with Simon Robinson about his social activism projects and their impact on his language learning.

In Today's Episode:

Simon Robinson is an English language teacher living in Okinawa, Japan. He's been involved in multiple social-change projects over the year and has witnessed how being part of a movement has had a huge impact on his Japanese. In this episode, we explore his various projects, how they've helped him with his languages, and also suggest ways for you to do the same. To connect with Simon, please visit:

Here's an overview of the benefits of social activism in your language learning:

  1. It's learning by doing
  2. It's exciting and emotionally involving (even more so than stories!) - perfect for effective retention of new vocabulary etc
  3. It covers all skills (reading listening writing speaking) as well as translation/interpreting (if that's what you like) - for example it can be fantastic for speaking skills - you will be having emotionally-engaging high-level communication pretty much every time you participate (daily, if you get very involved!)
  4. A learner can choose how to participate, focusing on the activities/skills they feel drawn to - if you like translation you can do it, or if you prefer to ditch your L1 and go full-on immersion you can do that too!
  5. It's completely free
  6. It can take up a lot of time if you want it to - perfect if you are serious about developing your skills via an immersion approach
  7. You can do it from anywhere - most organisation takes place over the internet (You don't even have to participate in your country of residence - live in japan but want to participate in the UK? No problem!)
  8. Most projects are desperate for as many willing volunteers as they can get - if you want to participate you will be welcomed with open arms!
  9. As real work in real projects it will be fantastic work experience, which will be invaluable on your CV
  10. It may even lead to paid work (many projects do have paid positions) tho I should add that it would be unwise to count on this: the vast majority of participants in projects are voluntary.
  11. Last but not least....as a by-product of your language learning you will be helping to make the world a better place!

319: Is it useful to learn songs?25 Jun 201900:17:18

Hilina asks. "Is it useful to learn songs?"

In Today's Episode:
  • The links between musical ability and language ability are sketchy at best...
  • However, most of know intuitively that there is a link
  • I think the most obvious connection is with pronunciation
  • Learning songs is a great way to add variety in your language routine, and to learn vocabulary and phraseology
  • Music is also a wonderful way to focus on pronunciation in your target language

317: Why do I have random bad language days?19 Jun 201900:14:50

Maya asks. "Why do I have random bad days in my language learning?"

In Today's Episode:
  • It's totally normal to have "slow days" in your language learning, or days when your brain doesn't seem to fire up at all
  • The learning process involves lots of ups and downs - it's how you learn!
  • I like to think of the bad days as the time when you're really learning and improving!

313: Can I learn Italian in 4 weeks?05 Jun 201900:13:05

Jorg asks: "Can I learn Italian in 4 weeks?"

In Today's Episode:
  • Yes, you can! But you approach will change depending on your goals
  • If you're just looking to speak and have conversations on your trip, then I'd recommend speaking every day leading up to your trip for 2-3 hour
  • However, to set up a better long-term foundation, I would do exactly what I did on my Italian Project last year - i.e. lots of input!

416 - How Can I Prepare To Travel Abroad In 1 Month?24 Aug 202100:13:05

In this live episode of the podcast, I answer YouTube user Kay Koopmans' excellent question:

"I have a month before I go to Germany for a 10-month foreign exchange program, but I don’t know any German. With a month's time to prepare, what do you suggest I do? Just learn like anyone else? Just memorize vocab? What’s the most effective thing to focus on when you only have a very short amount of time before being thrown into the deep end?!"

  • It's difficult to say what your advantage will be

305: The "Overwhelming Ocean" of Language Learning01 May 201900:21:57

Kristin asks: "How do you overcome the overwhelming ocean of language learning?"

In Today's Episode:
  • How I most relate to this: Cantonese
  • 3 months isn't a long time... so be patient!
  • Recognise that this is a psychological / motivation issue... not a language learning "problem"
  • Over time, you get to know how you work and how you learn, and that's what gives you confidence
  • But staying motivated is the only thing that matters, because without that you're lost

Some tips for doing this:

  • Do a "complete 360" in your study - try something totally different!
    • Take lessons
    • Listen instead of read
    • Stop memorising and get immersion
  • Make sure you're doing what most excites you -- speaking?
  • Find strength from your daily practice
  • Apply mindfulness techniques to the emotions of frustration and overwhelm

303: How can I learn to read Chinese?08 Mar 201900:15:12

Jon asks: "What's the best way to learn to read Chinese?"

In Today's Episode:
  • Don't make the assumption that you need to learn to write Chinese characters
  • There are many approaches and methods to learning to read and write Chinese
  • For me, the fundamental approach should be to learn by doing the activity that you want to ultimately do. E.g. if your aim is to read, you should learn the script by reading
  • There is real value in learning to write the first few hundred Chinese characters, so you have an awareness of the foundation of writing, such as stroke order and character balance

Note: I refer to a simple graph in the episode that I drew out on a white board in the original video. It's a very basic graphic and you should be able to understand what I'm explaining from audio alone. However, if you want to see the graph for more context, go to 3:46 in the video here:

296: Principles of Language Learning with Lydia Machova | Part 514 Jan 201900:28:03

Welcome part 5 of my conversation with Lydia Machova, from LanguageMentoring.com

In Today's Episode:

Make a Success of Long-Term Learning:

  • I estimate it takes 500 hours (European language, B2 level, efficient time) = 2 years of 1 hours a day with breaks (2 months learning, 1 month break) ... but it's not necessary to learn non-stop! (My Swahili: 11 months, 5 of them off 🙂 ) - but I' m so much further ahead than a year ago!
  • Always make a plan, with a starting and end date - otherwise it's too scary.
  • Alternate methods: not one universal method for everyone, I keep alternating Goldlist and Anki, get tired of it after a few months
  • The island and the wave: when will I not lose the language anymore?
  • Two languages at once

295: Principles of Language Learning with Lydia Machova | Part 408 Jan 201900:36:09

Welcome part 4 of my conversation with Lydia Machovha, from LanguageMentoring.com

In Today's Episode:

To speak from day 1... or not?

  • Start with self-talk, then other speakers
  • Output is so much more important than the person you're talking to! Use other students, don't look for professional native speaker teachers you won't learn mistakes from others (just negligible influence) - because lots of listening input!
  • Less stress with "non-native speakers"
  • Don't worry about making mistakes - this takes a change in mindset but it's possible (especially people from traditional school system)
  • What to talk about (esldisuccions.org)
  • Simplify what you’re trying to say
  • The only way to improve speaking is to speak - not Duolingo, not reading, not grammar exercises

294: Principles of Language Learning with Lydia Machova | Part 327 Dec 201800:31:45

Welcome part 3 of my conversation with Lydia Machovha, from LanguageMentoring.com

In Today's Episode:

Start with lots of input: Listening and Reading

  • TV series are the best - much better than movies
    • without subtitles or with original subtitles
  • Podcasts: many Slovak listeners listen to you for your accent 🙂
  • Read bilingual books or create them with translations
  • Combination of both is great: Amazon book + audiobook (or Youtube: Little Prince)
  • Plan to speak after 1 month - it will boost your vocabulary and confidence

293: Principles of Language Learning with Lydia Machova | Part 220 Dec 201800:23:12

Welcome part 2 of my conversation with Lydia Machovha, from LanguageMentoring.com

In Today's Episode:

Create time, don't wait till you have it....

  • When I wake up, it's my first priority
  • A little test... if you receive a phone call saying that a loved one had been taken to hospital, you would find the time to put everything else aside...
  • Language learning can also become a priority in your life, even if only for a short period
  • 30 min a day can change a lot. 1 hour a day means visible steady growth!
  • System is king! If you don't plan ahead, you need to rely on your willpower - which is very difficult!

414 - How this Mormon Missionary Learned AMAZING Korean10 Aug 202100:40:09

Imagine that you got a letter in the post announcing that you will be put on a plane to Korea in just 9 weeks, where you will stand on a street corner and talk to strangers about your faith IN KOREAN. Add to this the fact that you don't yet speak a single word in the language!

That is precisely what Derek Driggs experienced when he trained to be a Mormon (LDS) missionary at the Missionary Training Center (MTC) in Provo, Utah, before being sent to live in Korea for 2 years back in 2012. In this episode of the podcast, my colleague John Fotheringham interviews Derek about his experience learning Korean and what lessons you can apply in your own language learning adventures.

Note: All commentary in the video is about language learning, NOT religion. Also, please note that though Derek was formerly an instructor at the Provo Missionary Training Center following his time in Korea, he is not an official representative or spokesperson for the MTC or LDS church.

291: How do I decide what to study every day?04 Dec 201800:16:52

Kausalya asks: "How do you decide what to do every day in your core study time?

In Today's Episode:
  • My "Core Study Time" is quiet, focused time that I spend on my target language every morning
  • I don't have any kind of weekly routine where I do specific activities every day
  • Rather, I focus on one activity, often for a period of 2-3 weeks
  • I call these Sprints, which you can read more about in this article
  • The reason for Sprints is that sustained focus is how I've always been able to bring about real, meaningful progress in my language learning
  • Jumping from one activity to another on a daily basis, in my opinion, encourages shallow learning
