Every Stranger Has a Story, Let's Start Listening | Trailer05 May 202600:01:08

“Every stranger has a story.” This is what Hunter Prosper realized when he began posting man-on-the-street interviews with real-life strangers to his social media accounts. Now, Hunter is expanding his social media series into a new weekly video and audio podcast, Stories from a Stranger, featuring portraits of multiple strangers connected by themes of love, loss, regret, inspiration, illness, family connections, and more.

In each episode, Hunter brings his innate warmth, curiosity, and charm, interviewing people from all walks of life and sharing anonymously submitted confessions. Interviews start with a question and then grow in unexpected ways as strangers open up and share their most defining moments. From the deaths of loved ones to using their most painful moments as inspiration, to finding their greatest loves, no subject is off-limits. Their stories are raw, intimate, and bursting with humanity.

Right now, it is easy to feel like the world is irrevocably divided. Stories from a Stranger is a warm reminder that we are all human and more connected than we realize. It’s an invitation to empathy. Every stranger has a story. Let’s start listening.

S E3: Using Pain as Inspiration25 May 202600:59:04

Hunter Prosper meets two strangers who found inspiration in their hardest moments, and learns how one woman's cancer journey led her to find the love of her life.

Meet this episode's strangers:

- Marco shares the story of the man he knew instantly was the love of his life, the sudden disappearances that shattered him, and the cancer diagnosis that followed their final breakup. As a former dancer, he came to see his illness as his body mourning alongside his heart, and eventually transformed that grief into a three-part choreography, Safe from Sleep—bliss, loss, and journey—that brought him back to the stage after 20 years and all the way to Carnegie Hall.

- Heather once abandoned her art because it felt “inconvenient” and too vulnerable to share. A sudden cervical cancer diagnosis and a hysterectomy at 35 shattered her dream of carrying a child and left her feeling “broken”. In the quiet of recovery at her parents’ home, she picked up old art supplies and rediscovered a talent that now brings her peace. Over time, she came to see her experience as a strange kind of gift that stripped her down to her “bare bones,” led her to meet her future husband.

- Ismael is Heather's husband. He wasn’t looking for love when he moved to London and joined a group bike ride—only to realize, on that first ride, that he’d just met his future wife.

S E1: Love Throughout Your Life11 May 202600:46:36

Hunter Prosper meets three strangers at three different stages of life and asks them what love means to them. In this episode of Stories from a Stranger, we explore how love looks and feels different at every age—from the dizzying rush of a first crush to the quiet comfort of a lifelong partner, and the ache of wondering if love will ever come at all. Today, yesterday, and tomorrow, love is in the air.

Meet this episode's strangers:

- Sally, 96, who calls a college boy who gave her "a tingle" the love of her life, remembers the man who massaged her frozen feet on a ski trip and became her husband, and recalls the shock of being told she’d never have children, only to get pregnant on her honeymoon and become the matriarch of a sprawling family. She talks about losing her husband Joe, letting go of lovemaking, and living by her motto: “If you don’t ask, you don’t get.”

- Ella, 18, has never been in love or in a long-term relationship and wonders if that makes her unlovable. After a string of talking stages that go nowhere, she’s left asking, “Am I the problem?” even as she still believes in love and tries to learn how to be happy on her own.

- Tish, an artist who makes slice‑of‑life comics, had nearly given up on dating in New York when a quiet, gentle follower named Akeem messaged to say he loved her sense of humor and the way she sees the world. A first dinner turned into skating dates, Comic-Con cosplay, and a second date where she knew she’d marry him. Now married, they go to couples therapy even when things are good, determined to keep choosing each other and to grow together. For Tish, love is an anchor in a world where everything else changes.

Their stories remind us that love isn't one thing. It evolves, it disappoints, it surprises us, and sometimes it finds us when we least expect it.

- Infertility and unexpected pregnancy

S E6: Sometimes Blood Isn't Thicker Than Water15 Jun 202600:54:03

Hunter meets with three individuals who had less than ideal relationships with the people who raised them and discusses how those relationships have shaped their adult lives.

Meet this episode's strangers:

- Latoya shares the story of a distant father and the fragile, beautiful bond they finally built in the last three months before he died. She describes his health struggles and the constant childhood fear that she’d get a call saying he was gone, and how that shaped her relationships with men. Yet in the end, she chose to show up for him at his lowest moment, ending what a friend called “a cycle of abandonment” in her family and reminding her father he was still worthy of love.

- Carmel opens up about how her relationship with her mother contributed to her letting go of the dream of “true love” and a soulmate, even as her friendships feel like the deepest soul connections she’s ever known. Growing up in a home where affection was transactional and physical touch was absent, she learned that love had to be earned through achievement, a pattern that persisted within her adult relationships. The most painful wound came when, during a fight, her mother told her she wished she had aborted her, words Carmel still hears in her head every day.

- Leon discusses what it is like to have a narcissistic father and the pain that has been inflicted upon the family. Leon came to realize that it was impossible for his father to love and care for him the way he needed, and that the best thing was to keep his distance.

S E5: Our Spirits Are Stronger Than Our Bodies08 Jun 202600:42:44

Hunter meets three people whose lives were upended by devastating illnesses. They share their stories of survival and how they refused to let sickness get in the way of living their lives.

Meet this episode's strangers:

- Sandra survived a catastrophic stroke and fell into a coma. Doctors told her mother that she would never wake up. Her mother refused to let doctors remove life support and proved Sandra could still hear by asking her to squeeze their fingers and move her foot. Sandra describes a visit to “paradise,” where she was told, “You have a purpose to fulfill,” before being sent back to her life. Now she walks Central Park for miles, has completed the New York City Marathon, and uses her story to show other stroke survivors that “it’s not the end.”

- Cheri was a healthy 18‑year‑old dancer when a mysterious autoimmune disorder suddenly took away her ability to walk and move. Doctors told her parents to prepare for the worst as treatments failed, but Sherry—fully lucid inside a body that couldn’t respond—refused to accept that her life was over. She grieved the loss of the old version of herself, yet slowly shifted from “why me?” to “why not me?” as she rebuilt a new life.

- Gil reflects on losing his closest friend, Tom, just before the pandemic and the years it took to process that grief. Then a routine blood test led him to a cancer clinic, where he spent ten days convinced he had only months to live before learning he had a chronic, slow‑moving leukemia instead. Those days staring “into the abyss” forced him to ask whether his life’s work really mattered, and then finding out he was not dying led him to not take life for granted.

- Stroke recovery and near-death experiences

- Power of family advocacy in hospitals

- Overcoming autoimmune paralysis

- Reclaiming identity through dance

- Living with chronic leukemia diagnosis

Hunter talks to three people who are living with disabilities, and how it’s effected them.

Meet this episode's strangers:

-Gabriella was diagnosed with profound hearing loss when she was a baby. She received cochlear implants, and after attending a preschool for the deaf, she transitioned to “mainstream” schools where most people didn’t realize she was deaf. Hunter talks to three people who were raised by parents suffering from addiction, and how that changed them.

Meet this episode’s strangers:

-Troy was raised from age two to seventeen by his stepdad, who is an ex-NFL player. Troy looked up to him, but as his stepdad’s alcoholism spiraled out of control, he drifted out of Troy’s life. S E14: Still Thinking About Them: Stories of Love, Loss, and Legacy10 Aug 202600:41:54

Hunter talks to strangers who are carrying on the memories of loved ones that were taken too soon.

Meet this week’s strangers:

- When Yauri was introduced to Matthew by a mutual friend they immediately became close friends. Matthew was a chubby, goofy friend who would always crack jokes and let Yauri practice her hair styling skills on him. Unfortunately, Matthew had one foot in the gang world and was tragically shot and killed. The loss of Matthew rocked Yauri. She describes the depression that followed, and how she still thinks about him all of the time, and the neighborhood day that honors his memory.

- John lost his mother Barbara earlier this year. She had John at the age of 16 and he felt like they really grew up together. Her remains were buried in Indiana just three days before the conversation, making the grief fresh; this process allowed John to relive their shared history and reflect on their relationship. He carries a picture of her and has taken her ashes on a “tour” to places like Hawaii and Indiana, continuing to include her in family journeys.

-Sean’s grandfather, Paul, died in June and was one of Sean’s biggest inspirations, especially in motivating him to pursue engineering. Paul served in the army during the Korean War but was stationed in France, where he “ate his way across Europe,” and was known for always having a funny story or trick to make people smile. He now sees Monarch butterflies as signs that his grandfather is with him, which helped him move through the main stage of grief; seeing them makes him happy rather than sad.

S E13: Lost Time, Found Compassion: Healing My Teenage Self03 Aug 202600:42:11

Hunter talks to three strangers who had moments in their youth that changed the shape of their lives going forwards. Even though they’re adults now, they still feel their young selves inside.

Meet this weeks strangers:

- Mia shares how being called “weird” and told she couldn’t sing deeply hurt her as a child, especially as a quirky, ADHD kid who once went to school dressed as a clown. She describes a traumatic recess incident where popular kids staged a fake breakup to humiliate her, chasing her and throwing papers, which shattered her sense of safety but later fueled her compassion and artistic philosophy of creating non‑judgmental, welcoming spaces. She talks about processing these memories through EMDR therapy, learning that childhood experiences lodge in the body and that working through them can be painful but ultimately liberating. Mia reflects on how bullying made her abandon her authentic, “weird” self to fit in as a teen, leading to a sense of “lost time” and a long journey back to self‑trust and self‑expression.

- Jon recalls being a disruptive class clown in ninth grade and having a teacher physically slam him against a wall and call him a “loser” who would “never amount to be anything,” a moment whose full hurt surfaced only later. Johnny also describes a long, hostile relationship with a principal from junior high through high school, and how decades later that principal followed him on Facebook, praised his art, and moved Johnny to tears, feeling freed from the old “prison‑like” school dynamic. Asked about his greatest love, Johnny says it is the creative process itself, which sustains him spiritually and emotionally, serves as meditation and escape, and has been more enduring than his past marriage or romantic relationships. Reflecting on those educators, Johnny says he would now apologize to the teacher he tormented, acknowledging he disrupted what might have been the teacher’s passion and that the teacher had reason to try to stop the source of his pain.

- Amit still thinks often about her fourth‑grade English teacher who taught her after she immigrated from Israel to the United States in 2008 without knowing English. Thrown into public school with almost no English beyond “yes” and “no,” she initially communicated with peers through sounds, he took her under his wing, teaching her one‑on‑one during and after school, and even weekly at the library over the summer, so that by fifth grade she could speak English fluently, if imperfectly. Amit describes how his care made her feel loved and seen, stabilizing an otherwise frightening and destabilizing childhood immigration experience where she initially felt unsafe and unable to express herself. Now a teacher and tutor herself, Amit hasn’t yet reconnected with her former teacher, but wants to tell him she’s doing the same work he did—teaching kids to read, write, and speak English—and that she thinks of him almost every time she teaches.

S E15: Falling in Love is Beyond My Control17 Aug 202600:42:08

Hunter speaks with three strangers about meeting partners who changed the course of their lives.

Meet this week's strangers:

- Niko is a school teacher from New York City who was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. During treatment he grew closer to his long-time friend Lauren who gave him gift packages, which became a catalyst for rekindling their relationship and eventually dating. He describes Lauren’s support as essential, saying he would not have gotten through cancer or remained mentally okay without her; she showed up early, handled everything with grace, gave him hope, and made him feel handsome and normal even when he had lost his eyebrows and eyelashes. He explains that falling in love with Lauren during treatment meant everything; she became the person he wanted around when he felt worst, and he now sees her as his life partner, having already bought a diamond with plans to propose.

- Selene's greatest love is Ethan, whom she first met in 2010 through her cousin on the day of the World Cup final; he is half Spaniard, and they initially connected over rooting for Spain. Their relationship unfolded over years of near-misses: she moved to California and he dated someone else; later they reconnected while she was in another relationship; then again as friends in a group when both had other partners, with him repeatedly “popping out of nowhere.” Eventually, after both had ended other relationships, Ethan directly expressed that he still had feelings and wanted marriage, and despite her hesitance, his clarity led her to give the relationship a serious try, including moving in together earlier than planned. She recalls the relationship feeling easy and largely conflict-free, later wondering if they didn’t argue enough; the turning point came when a disagreement over her wanting to attend a concert prompted him to admit he hadn’t felt the same for some time, which shocked her. They still went on a planned trip to Spain, where she had once imagined getting engaged, but despite trying, he couldn’t rekindle his feelings, leading her to conclude that two good people aren’t always a good long-term fit and that some loves aren’t meant to last forever.

- Kyle’s greatest love is his wife, Bethany, whom he met in Long Beach, New York, during a grassroots effort to petition the city to reinstate the music portion of a surf contest that had been canceled after Hurricane Irene. They first met at City Hall while working with mutual friends to gather signatures; later that night he visited her house, met her family, and, too nervous to ask for her number, wrote his number on her hand at her request. They first said “I love you” about a month into dating while sitting on a couch with friends, describing it as something that felt natural to say. Now married nearly 13 years, Kyle reflects that love has evolved: he feels most loved when he feels truly seen, especially through life’s challenges, and emphasizes that marriage is not easy but that growing up together and sharing those struggles is something special.
