What has Graham 'Buzz' Bidstrup of The Angels and Ganggajang been up to lately? OR Beats, Buzz & Books
Join Cheryl Lee - That Radio Chick on STILL ROCKIN' IT for news, reviews, music and interviews with some of our favourite Australian musicians
Graham "Buzz" Bidstrup doesn't just tell stories—he's lived them. As the drumming powerhouse behind iconic Australian bands The Angels, Gang Gajang, and The Party Boys, Buzz takes us on an unforgettable journey through the electrifying pub rock scene of the 70s and 80s where the air was "thick with the unmistakable scent of beer, sweat, and pot."
Born into a musical Adelaide family in 1952, Buzz's path to rock stardom began with a father who could have been a concert pianist (before WWII trauma silenced his playing) and a mother who sang with gusto in church. This foundation, combined with exposure to seminal artists through his older brother, set the stage for his remarkable career. With characteristic humility and humor, Buzz reveals how he transformed The Angels by suggesting Doc Neeson move from bass to frontman—a decision that created magic. "You couldn't take your eyes off him on stage," Buzz explains about the charismatic Neeson, whom he considers the greatest frontman he's ever worked with.
Beyond the music that defined a generation, Buzz's story takes unexpected turns. His unique upside-down guitar playing created GangGajang's distinctive sound. His work with the Jimmy Little Foundation, promoting healthy eating among indigenous children for 25 years, reveals the depth of his character. "That's what I get up in the morning for," he shares, demonstrating how music can be a vehicle for meaningful change. Still active at 73, Buzz continues mentoring young artists as an APRA ambassador while passing his musical genes to his producer son Maxwell.
Whether you're a die-hard Angels fan or simply appreciate authentic Australian stories, Buzz's memoir "No Secrets" delivers raw insights into a musical life fully lived. The book is available now at Woolworths for $24—grab your copy and discover the stories behind the soundtrack of Australian rock.

Sarah Buckley's effervescent energy radiates through every moment of our conversation about The Buckleys, the dynamic sibling band that's breathing fresh life into Australian country music. Growing up in the Byron hinterland with a father who drummed for The Radiators before exploring big band, rockabilly, and boogie-woogie piano, music was always destined to be their path.
"Dad was always playing," Sarah reminisces, explaining how their father deliberately steered them toward country music as a more wholesome alternative to the rock world he knew. This musical upbringing included learning guitar from James T of Canned Heat fame and performing at local festivals from a young age. The journey from competing in the BluesFest busking competition as children to returning as official performers years later represents a full-circle moment that clearly still resonates with Sarah.
The conversation takes an exciting turn when Sarah details her songwriting collaboration with Alexander Lasker from Kingswood. Unlike the structured Nashville writing sessions she was accustomed to, their creative process flowed organically into the early morning hours after breaks for dinner and drinks. This rock and roll approach yielded their previous single "See You Folks Again" and their new release "What Were Your Dreams Made Of" during one particularly inspired night. The latter track showcases Sarah's powerful vocals alongside a fierce mandolin solo in what she describes as "a high energy anthem built for dance floors, festival stages, and country playlists alike."
The family dynamic adds another fascinating layer to The Buckleys' story. Recently, youngest brother Dylan has joined the band after earning his stripes and completing his "band probation," as Sarah jokingly puts it. When asked about playing with siblings, she candidly admits it's "a mixed bag" with moments that are "explosive and very short" before everyone moves on professionally.
This authenticity extends to their annual "Buckleys and Friends" jam session at the Tamworth Country Music Festival, where they strip back to the spontaneous energy of their musical upbringing.
Discover the infectious blend of honky-tonk heart and rockabilly rebellion that's made The Buckleys one of Australia's most exciting young bands. From their #1 debut single to festival stages across two continents, they're proving country music's resurgence is in capable hands. Give their new single a listen and experience pure Buckley magic for yourself!

Ever wondered what happens when skilled musicians throw away the sheet music and just play? Step into the world of Blues Roulette with Jimi "The Human" Hocking, guitarist for the Screaming Jets and internationally acclaimed blues artist.
Blues Roulette isn't your typical performance—it's musical improvisation at its finest. Founded by bassist Ben Wicks at Melbourne's Catfish venue, these shows feature a rhythm section backing guest artists with absolutely no rehearsal. "There's no charts, it's just get in and play," explains Jimi, whose relief was visible during his first performance when he realized the backing musicians could truly play.
Jimi shares his remarkable journey as a blues musician parallel to his rock career with the Screaming Jets. In 2005, he became only the second non-American to win the prestigious Memphis International Blues Challenge—an extraordinary achievement considering hundreds of acts from around the world compete annually. Most fascinating is that all three non-American winners in the competition's history have been Australian, highlighting our country's unexpected prowess in this traditionally American art form.
Beyond technical proficiency, Jimi's approach to blues balances traditional elements with humor. "I like to write from a fun aspect," he says, comparing his style to Buddy Guy's more upbeat take on potentially gloomy subject matter. The Blues Roulette recordings capture these genuine moments—including musicians learning songs on the fly—preserving the raw, authentic spirit of true blues jamming.
For blues enthusiasts or anyone seeking an unfiltered musical experience, Blues Roulette delivers something increasingly rare: skilled musicians taking risks together in real-time, creating unique moments that will never be exactly replicated.
Check out their performances in Adelaide this weekend or discover their recordings at bluesroulette.com to experience this special musical phenomenon for yourself.

Fifty years after they first plugged in, The Angels continue to electrify Australian music with an undeniable energy that spans generations. Bass player Sam Brewster—son of founding member John—takes us deep into the band's remarkable evolution and enduring legacy.
The Brewster musical DNA runs deeper than most realize. Sam reveals how his family's artistic roots stretch back to his great-grandfather who performed in the first Australian Symphony Orchestra, his grandfather who conducted for the ABC, and now continues through a third generation with Sam on bass and brother Tom recently joining on drums. This musical heritage creates a powerful through-line in The Angels' sound—authentic rock that honors tradition while embracing fresh creative directions.
Sam offers fascinating insights into the band's current chapter, including their lineup changes, with drummer Nick Norton stepping into the frontman role and the release of their latest album "Ninety Nine." He shares the technical challenges of balancing parenthood with rock stardom, the complex process of modernizing their stage technology, and his personal musical inspirations ranging from Jeff Buckley to AC/DC. The conversation weaves through five decades of Angels history, from their humble beginnings as the Moonshine Jug and String Band to becoming one of Australia's most influential rock acts—a band Axl Rose credits as a primary inspiration for forming Guns N' Roses.
The Angels' Go For Broke tour represents everything this iconic band stands for—honoring their classic hits while showcasing new material that proves their creative fire burns as bright as ever. With 13 studio albums, 8 top 10 albums, and 17 top 40 singles behind them, The Angels remain a vital force in Australian music.
Experience their electrifying live show in a city near you and witness firsthand why Jimmy Barnes called them "a band that changed Australian music forever."
Follow The Angels at theangels.com.au and catch their nationwide tour to hear Sam's picks from the new album—"Heartbeats" and "Little Lies"—alongside the classics that shaped Australian rock.

Melbourne Ska Orchestra electrifies with their cinematic new single "Walla of Jericho" and prepares for a mammoth global tour supporting their upcoming album "The Ballad of Monte Loco." Trombonist and tour manager Wally Maloney takes us behind the scenes of this explosive ARIA award-winning collective that has become one of Australia's most beloved musical exports.
Emerging from Melbourne's vibrant ska scene in 2003, this "super group" united the city's best ska musicians into what was initially planned as a one-off celebration. What began as an annual event gradually evolved into the powerhouse ensemble we know today. Maloney shares fascinating stories about juggling 26+ musicians across international tours and the Orchestra's remarkable journey from local favorite to global sensation.
The conversation delves into their groundbreaking "One Year of Ska" project that earned them the 2019 ARIA for Best World Music Album - an incredible feat where they released one track every week for an entire year. Using what Maloney describes as a "Motown Model," they created 52 diverse tracks spanning classic ska covers, TV/movie themes, and original compositions. Their new music takes an exciting turn, blending spaghetti western cinematic elements with their signature ska sound, while "Walls of Jericho" tackles timeless themes of conflict with an undercurrent of hope.
As Melbourne Ska Orchestra prepares to tour Australia, Japan, and Canada, they promise the same infectious energy and fluid stage presence that has made their live shows legendary.

Rose Carleo captivates listeners with her powerful story of musical destiny, beginning at age 13 when her mother dared her to sing on stage. That pivotal moment launched a lifelong journey through Australia's vibrant rock scene, culminating in the formation of the Rose Carleo Band, known for their blues-infused rock sound and electrifying performances.
The band's new single "Daisy's Song" marks a significant departure from their typically harder rock style. This deeply moving ballad emerged from a place of raw vulnerability when a friend shared his struggles with depression, anxiety, and alcoholism. Rose and her husband Mick transformed these painful experiences into a song of hope and resilience. As Rose poignantly shares, "It's a song about hope, about reaching out... there's a real power in asking for help. It shouldn't be looked at as a weakness."
What makes this release particularly special is its thoughtful presentation. The artwork features a semicolon – a symbol that a person's story isn't over, just pausing before continuing. This powerful visual metaphor reinforces the song's message that even in our darkest moments, we can find connection and meaning by reaching out to others.
Looking ahead, the Rose Carleo Band has exciting plans for fans across Australia and beyond. Their forthcoming album will feature predominantly rock-driven anthems alongside "Daisy's Song" and one other ballad, showcasing their versatility as musicians.
In a nostalgic nod to music's golden era, they'll be releasing the album on vinyl – potentially in a striking blue that matches the single's artwork. With tour dates coming up across Australia and a trip to Japan scheduled for April, Rose's authentic voice and message continue to reach new audiences.
Listen to "Daisy's Song" on all major streaming platforms and follow Rose Carleo Band on social media or at rosecarlioband.com for upcoming tour dates.
Experience the power of music that not only rocks but also heals and connects.

When a band has been creating music together for nearly three decades, something magical happens. The creative chemistry becomes almost telepathic, transforming into what SuperJesus bassist Stu Rudd describes as "the DNA of both of us being in this band."
In this revealing conversation, Ruddy takes us behind the scenes of the recently released self-titled SuperJesus album and their extensive Australian and New Zealand tour, currently riding high on sold-out shows and enthusiastic fan response, the band demonstrates that their creative fire burns as brightly as ever.
The album represents a new pinnacle in the songwriting partnership between Stu and frontwoman Sarah McLeod, who have developed an intuitive musical connection that transcends words. "There were times when we would look at each other and we wouldn't talk, but we knew that we had to put a new chord in there," he explains, offering rare insight into their creative process.
The journey from their early days to becoming ARIA Award winners with platinum albums wasn't without challenges. With refreshing honesty, Rudd recalls the grueling work behind their "overnight" success – including rehearsing daily for 18 straight months. He reflects on how the band was often too busy with the practicalities of touring to fully appreciate their achievements at the time: "You guys are going platinum. Okay, yeah, well, we need petrol for the van because we're driving another 1,400 kilometres." Now, with the perspective of time, he can look back with well-earned pride at what they've built together. Between insights about the band, Stu also shares details about his work with supergroup The Filthy Animals and answers rapid-fire questions about his musical influences, favorite performances, and songs he wishes more people knew.
Whether you're a long-time fan or discovering The SuperJesus for the first time, this conversation offers a fascinating window into the mindset of musicians who continue to create vital, powerful music decades into their career.
