  My dear leaflets,

I am going to talk today about the Bush.  As you know, my background is native plants and where do you find most of these plants?  Out bush.  I am not going to pretend I know everything about the bush, but a million years ago, I did a diploma in Natural Resource management which gave me a pretty broad idea about the bush.

Blame my curiosity after my son went caving, and I pondered on plant species in caves.  Be aware, there will be more of these curiosity gems in the mix.

Episode 21 An introduction plus a bite or 331 Mar 202500:16:20

Send us a text

This may say season 2, but the truth of it is, it’s the next 20 main episodes of the podcast, precluding the minis and bites,

So today, I am introducing you to this next season plus a taste of a new thing I wanted to try - bites!  And no, they are not like last time and insects…I think I may be the only one who’s interested in bugs. But we're talking plants.  Favourites of mine, in no particular order, and because our next real episode is on bushland gardens, I thought I would start with some from the rutaceae family.  https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/824570-Leionema-phylicifoliumhttps://vicflora.rbg.vic.gov.au/flora/taxon/a136491f-1203-4ab2-9b68-c3337f72282e

Hello my dear leaflets,

I had wanted to get out this episode of summer happiness before we get into the nitty gritty of podcasting.  We're still in that honeymoon stage of the holidays, aren't we?  Even if most of us are now back at work.  This episode as I said from the other one, is me waffling about my garden and what’s in it and what I have in the way of plans for it over this year!

Apologies for the hiatus that gripped me through Winter.  Will be touching more on this in the next full episode.

Apologies also for the horrendous pronunciation of certain words, for example, notoriety and Latin names of plants. (A blooper reel will be coming out with me stumbling over such words)

This lady was known in the plant world, literary world, and Art world.  She also dabbled in geology and was remembered as a woman who didn't conform to the women of that era.  Opting for trousers instead of the frilly dresses, hats, and gloves of that era.

Hello my dear leaflets.  I hope you're excited for this mini. A little background of my I chode this lady.  Before I went to Burnley College, to study Horticulture, I went to Dookie College.  This was because I had wanted to do agriculture but wasn't really knowing in what aspect.  I had completed an advanced Certificate in Farming the year before. Anyway, what has this to do with horticulture?  It doesn't really.  But as I am doing these minis on inspirational women, I thought I'd do this one on the first woman -"Long live the lady student" who studied and graduated from Dookie college.

Hello my dear leaflets!

This is finally happening.  The crossover - YouTube and podcast episode on seeds.  How long have I been speaking about this?  Have I any listeners left?  This has been in the pipework for ages and I tend to avoid things I get overwhelmed with, but here it is!  Please, before you comment harshly, remember, this is my first dip into cross-platforms.  Anyway, this will be the first of many over the lifecycle of a humble seed.

As I said this is my first step into video and audio, so I did edit both, and described as much as I could,  However, there are a few I will add here, if you have no idea what I am talking about,

When I am at my art station, I talk about using a thing to extract the seeds out of a tomato.  The thing I am using is a craft knife.  Around this time, I also say"We cut like this."  This means I cut the tomato in half.

When I am labeling, I use a Sharpie on a paper bag.

Hello my dear leaflets!

We're going to talk about what plants not to put any where near your vege patch, whether it be due to increasing pests or diseases, or you accidently poison yourself.

Apologies, I know I say this is episode 13, but its actually episode 12!  The update I did a few eps ago stuffed me about.

Why should we have chickens in our backyards?  How many can you have in the Suburbs?  This does have a warning due to the brief talk on chicken death BUT. I will let you know when to fast forward.

Organic recipes from https://gardenerdsking.com/organic-control/

  • White oil

Traditionally used against aphids, tiny caterpillars, leaf miners, mealy bugs, mites, and scale.

  • 500 mL Vegetable oil
  • 100mL dishwashing detergent (organic would be best)

Mix the two liquids in a large far or bottle with a tightly secured lid. Before each use, shake vigorously. Keep it in a cool area. Use 1 tablespoon to 1L water.

  • Chili
  • 125 mL BURNING hot Chili
  • 480 mL water
  • 29 mL dish soap (organic/natural is best)

Puree chili; add water; leave to sit overnight. Strain this mixture (Be careful – it could burn!) and mix in soap and wa-la- a potent homemade, ready-to-use pesticide!

  • Fungal Spray

3.5 L Water

0.5 teaspoon (mild) liquid soap

1 tablespoon baking soda

NB. This needs to be used straight away as it cannot keep.

Don’t spray in the heat of the day and make sure the plants have been watered a few

Imagine having enough room to feed your family of 4 and extended family all year round.  Is it hard to set up?  No, not really.  It will depend on what your vision is.  I.e., do we want raised beds?  Garden plots?  Garden beds, wicking beds, have a sore back?  What about a no-dig garden?

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people should be aware that this episode will contain names of deceased persons.  Associated social media will contain names and images of deceased persons.

With the end of NAIDOC week, I decided to look up some early Aboriginal gardeners; however, this proved a wee bit difficult.  I chat about why this is the case.  Also speak about two ladies who were quoted to have a vast knowledge of plants, the environment, and their uses. Please check out the show notes if you're interested in reading more about the day-to-day lives of these women.

50 years ago was the first scientific source acknowledged the first peoples of Australia and their understanding of the plant world.
