Untitled EpisodeArtist on Artist imposter syndrome, and selling your artwork for $10,000 Stefan Baumann
18 Jan 2026
00:31:40
Stefan Bowman invites you to a 3-day plein air workshop at Mount Shasta—limited spots, paint 6–8 pieces, daily critiques, massive confidence boost. He plugs his new book: 400+ pages of distilled knowledge, field guide for any medium. Then he talks with student Chris Lawson, who just scored a $10,000 commission this week—on her goal list. They cover goal-setting (financial, exhibition, skill—break into quarters), pricing smart (square-inch method, raise prices when unsold), creative sales (lease-to-own paintings), and momentum (show anywhere: coffee shop, gas station, church). Wealthy buyers are everywhere—don’t underestimate your area. Biggest thread: impostor syndrome. You’re not faking it. If you’re creating from your own life, you’re an artist—AI can’t touch that human story. Collectors buy you, your club, your dedication. Set goals, price with guts, show up, and live an extraordinary life. #PleinAirPainting #PleinAirWorkshop #MountShastaArtRetreat #LandscapePaintingBook #StefanBowman #PleinAirTechniques #ArtCareerGoals #10000ArtCommission #ImpostorSyndromeArtists #ArtPricingStrategies #LeaseToOwnPainting #ChrisLawsonArtist #GrandViewRanchRetreat #UltimatePleinAirGuide #3DayPleinAirWorkshop #HowToPricePaintings #OvercomingImpostorSyndrome #ArtGoalsAndCommissions #SellingArtInSmallTowns #LeaseYourArtwork

Take your art to the next level, experience success, Baumann interviews Cris Lawson and Learn How
01 Jan 2026
00:27:41
In this podcast learn the secrets of success and how Cris Lawson launched her career with a few good ideas and a lot of hard work. Stefan Baumann interviews Chris Lawson as she explains her insights on how to make your art better, how to put together something that is bigger than just a good idea, and launch it into a success with enough momentum that will carry her our career for years to come. In this interview, we discussed putting together in our show and how to capture the attention of a few major magazines. Stefan Baumann, her coach and mentor, discusses with her the in and out of putting together an event and is good information for all artists to know. Man, you are a dark bully, you couldn't even rise up out of the depths of being mean and at least try to have a pleasant New Year's evening, without bitching and whining and complaining. Everything I do for you all day long, trying to make your life a little easier and making sure you're comfortable and all you do is just blah blah blah you're right daddy I love the way you try to make it wonderful New Year's Eve. It's these kind of eveningsthat brings smiles to my faces because you're such a bright inspiration. Artist Success Interview: Stefan Bauman I had an idea to develop an art show by specifically targeting a market that has been untouched. This focus gave me the motivation to pursue art in a way that stood apart from the traditional paths most artists take. The concept of filling a gap in the market helped me form my initial ideas and clarified my creative direction. The first thing you have to do is improve your artwork. I approached this by understanding the 13 keys needed to create a great work of art. Focusing on these fundamentals allowed me to elevate the quality of my creations and build a solid foundation. Without this step, nothing else would have had the same impact. Improving artistic skill was the crucial starting point for turning ideas into a successful career. How do you define what makes an art project bigger than just a good idea? An art show becomes bigger than just a good idea when it is not merely a one-time event but generates a life of its own. To create something truly impactful, you have to create something big and then be willing to give it away so others can enjoy it. This approach builds momentum and allows the project to grow beyond the initial concept, making the art project sustainable and influential in the long term. What strategies did you use to generate momentum and sustain success over time? Quality artwork is the key. Without quality artwork, you cannot possibly propel your future successfully. Beyond creating great work, it’s important to find someone to help you—someone who has been through the process before and can guide you. This combination of quality art and mentorship helps build lasting momentum in your career.. #artinspiration #artistsuccess #mentorshipmatters #qualityart #artcareertips #creativejourney #artshowideas #artistgrowth #behindthecanvas #creativelife #oilpainting #paintings #artshows #easylife #beginnerartist #gallerylife #creativeflow #abstractart #inspirationdaily #nicheart #artshowsuccess #studentartist #artmentorship #emergingart #successfulartist #gallerytalk #behindthescenes #artbusiness #createniche

Each and every original oil painting is a moment captured by the artist of a remote location discovered by Baumann on his countless journies deep into the American wilderness. Through his keen eye and the steady trained hand of a master painter, Baumann painstakingly recreates the moment that he himself experiences, captured on the canvas first on location, and then finished or recreated back in his studio located on his private ranch in Mt Shasta California. Baumann's plein-air paintings include amazing effects of light, shadow, color, and the natural beauty that he sees in American wilderness landscapes, wildlife, and the architectural styles of older houses and barns. Through his work, viewers enjoy the opportunity to see spectacular places in America that are too remote and inaccessible for most to visit themselves. Baumann’s painting style has been classified by art collectors and galleries as “Romantic Realism with Luminicsm.” Pioneers of this beautiful genre of landscape painting include Frederic Church, Thomas Cole, and Albert Bierstadt of the Hudson River School. They were East Coast artists who journeyed to the Western United States to sketch and paint amazing views of the American wilderness, and then they returned to their home studios to paint stunning detailed versions of these vistas on room-sized canvases. Similarly, Stefan Baumann reveals the true spirit of nature by transporting the viewer to distant lands that have gone unseen and undisturbed on his canvases. Baumann’s passion for painting is fueled by his fascination with and close observation of nature’s sublime beauty and mood. Baumann’s paintings speak for themselves ~ elegant and mysterious, exciting and bold, every landscape and wildlife painting ca

Baumann Podcast was Awarded number #11 on the TOP 25 List of Podcasts to listen to in 2023! Thanks for listing and making this happen
In this Podcast, Stefan Baumann Talks to his Patreon group about advertising your brand through your bio and artist statement. This information is vital if you are interested in making your life about Art!
Stefan Baumann is an acclaimed landscape and wildlife artist who paints in oils on location and from his studio at the Grand View Ranch in Mount Shasta, California. He grew up in the beautiful forest of Lake Tahoe, California, and after high school, he studied art and architectural history for a year at Stanford University in 1980 and continued studying art and painting at the San Francisco Academy of Art University. During this time, he began Baumann Fine Art, a business enterprise that promoted landscape painting.
Stefan Baumann believes that “Anyone can learn how to paint; all it takes is desire.” He has been an artist and is an oil painting instructor for the past 35 years and has taught the fine art of oil painting to enthusiastic art students in the San Francisco Bay Area as well as in Southern Oregon, and in Northern California. He says that artists who paint from life, which includes still life painting in a studio and plein air painting on location, have a distinct advantage when creating original artwork because they can paint what they see and feel as they apply their paint to a canvas. This personal experience with the subject is not possible when copying another’s work or painting from the limited image of a photograph. Plein air painting utilizes a painting application technique called “alla prima,” or wet on wet, in which the entire painting is completed before the paint dries. An alla prima painting can be completed in one or more sessions, depending on the type of paints used and their respective drying time; but usually, a painting is virtually completed in one session, making it uniquely suited to painting on location.

Generating original paintings, that was sell to collectors, and leave your competition behind!
01 Jan 2026
00:26:01
In this Podcast Stefan Baumann describes how to create a body of work that is autobiographical and represents the life with living that we all are on a journey with on this planet. To understand how to create autobiographical work will be the foundation of how we move forward and how we separate ourselves from work created by AI and work that is truly created at a passion. In an age dominated by digital influence and AI, people seek authentic connection. Buyers and audiences want art that reflects real human circumstances and feelings, not just flawless images. They want to feel the presence of an artist who has lived through struggle, joy, doubt, and hope. My creative process embraces chance and randomness. Using my phone like a tool of Russian roulette, I access snapshots of a life worth living. These everyday digital fragments—photos, messages, moments—form an autobiographical record. By reinterpreting them, I create visual stories that reveal truths often overlooked. Each image I choose reflects a part of my life’s story, rich with personal meaning. Together, they form a mosaic that speaks to universal human experiences. This emotional connection makes my work uniquely meaningful to collectors seeking depth beyond surface beauty. My art is a living archive of memories and emotions that go deeper than any AI can mimic. It conveys vulnerability, hope, nostalgia—the intangible feelings that give life to my pieces. I want collectors to connect with my work on an emotional level, recognizing themselves in the stories I tell. To do this, I use techniques that embrace imperfection and spontaneity, highlighting raw human emotion rather than polished digital perfection. Even when using digital tools, I prioritize authenticity. I balance technology with intentionality, resisting over-curation to keep the truth of each moment alive. Themes of community, memory, vulnerability, and time run through my art, reflecting what I consider a life worth living: one filled with connection, discovery, and self-reflection. These ideas appear through layered images and symbolic contrasts between presence and absence. Challenges in my life have shaped my artistic voice, adding depth and honesty to my work. These experiences inform how I see the world and the stories I choose to share. What sets my art apart from AI-generated work is its emotional depth and humanity. AI can create images, but it cannot replicate the lived experience and conscious reflection behind my pieces. I am committed to transforming the chaos and beauty of everyday life into art that speaks to our shared humanity. This is the essence of my journey as an artist. #MixedMediaNarratives #HumanVulnerability #MemoryCollage #SpontaneousImagery #LayeredEmotions #AuthenticDigitalArt #AntiAIAesthetics #SelfReflectiveStories

Artist Block What to look for and how to get over it . Be Prepared so you don't get it
29 Oct 2025
00:12:18
Online platforms like YouTube help by providing inspiration and connection, especially for those with limited local support. Personal challenges, including disabilities, can increase difficulties but also inspire resilience. The "four Bs" framework—Beliefs, Behaviors, Barriers, and Benefits—helps artists identify what maintains their block and develop solutions. Artist block is dangerous because it threatens creativity and career sustainability. Passion and a clear mission drive artists through tough times. Coaching and mentorship provide personalized strategies, goal-setting, and encouragement. When block arises, artists can take immediate steps: 1) pause to refresh, 2) engage in free creative play, 3) change environment or medium, 4) talk with peers or mentors, and 5) set very small goals. Keeping a public presence during block maintains visibility and motivation. Pressure to produce can inspire or overwhelm; managing it with realistic goals and self-care is key. Avoiding shows removes important deadlines and feedback, which may deepen block. To stay inspired, artists should seek new experiences, remain curious, and remember why they create. Common misconceptions are that block is failure, limited to unskilled artists, or fixed by waiting. Persistent block warrants professional help such as coaching or therapy.

Painting From a Photograph Verses Paining From Your Imagination
19 Oct 2020
00:14:19
In this Podcast, Stefan Baumann talks with his students about painting from your Imagination verses painting from a photograph. When painting from a photograph the artist is limmited by what is on it rarley adding anything to it that would depict the human emagination. We as humans love a story to bring us out of our every day life. Like children the more we put into it, or what I like to call it "PMI" the more we love the story. Painting from your Imagination brings the viewer to a different level of seeing, one that is from the heart and not from the eye. Through his keen eye and the steady trained hand of a master painter, Baumann painstakingly recreates the moment that he himself experiences, captured on the canvas first on location, and then finished or recreated back in his studio located his private ranch in Mt Shasta California. Baumann's plein air paintings include amazing effects of light, shadow, color, and the natural beauty that he sees in American wilderness landscapes, wildlife, and the architectural styles of older houses and barns. Similarly, Stefan Baumann reveals the true spirit of nature by transporting the viewer too distant lands that have gone unseen and undisturbed on his canvases. Baumann’s passion for painting is fueled by his fascination with and close observation of nature’s sublime beauty and mood. Baumann’s paintings speak for themselves ~ elegant and mysterious, exciting and bold, every landscape and wildlife painting captures a feeling, a sense of place, and the magic of light.

Understanding Studio Light through using painting Umbrellas with Stefan Baumann
29 Oct 2025
00:22:11
When painting outdoors, controlling lighting conditions is critical to achieving accurate color perception and rendering paintings that translate well when viewed indoors. Understanding how natural and artificial light interacts with your workspace and painting surface can greatly influence the final outcome. Below are comprehensive insights and techniques based on years of experience in plein air painting. 1. Qualities of an Effective Umbrella for Outdoor Painting The ideal umbrella used for outdoor painting must be opaque, preventing any light from bleeding through. The top half should be white to reflect sunlight and keep the artist cool during long outdoor sessions. The underside must be black and completely non-reflective to eliminate reflective and key light that can interfere with accurate color observation. Using an umbrella that allows light to pass or reflect will distort the lighting environment and complicate color matching. 2. The Problem with Transparent Umbrellas Transparent umbrellas permit excessive light penetration, creating an inconsistent and overly bright environment around the painting area. This excessive light causes glare and reflections on the palette and canvas, making it difficult to judge true colors and values. The uncontrolled light increases the brightness and washes out subtle color transitions, resulting in less accurate color representation during the painting process. 3. Impacts of Excessive Light Exposure on Paintings Viewed Indoors When painted under very bright light outdoors, the colors and luminosity in a painting can become misleading. Paintings created in these over-illuminated conditions often appear darker or poorly balanced when viewed under typical indoor lighting. This happens because the artist may adjust colors to compensate for the intense outdoor light, leading to undervalued color chroma and less vibrancy indoors. 4. Ideal Studio Lighting for Accurate Color Perception The best studio lighting environment features a relatively low light level, such as a 60-watt bulb controlled with an in-line dimmer switch. Less light in the studio environment encourages the artist to "push" the light and luminosity into the painting consciously. This controlled and dimmed lighting environment helps reveal true color relationships and avoids the deceptive brightness that causes color distortions. 5. Advantages of Painting Under Lower Light Conditions Paintings created under lower light conditions often appear more vibrant and luminous when viewed indoors because the artist uses higher chroma and contrast to compensate for reduced light levels. This practice results in richer, more glowing colors that maintain their intensity under a range of lighting conditions. Lower light training also enhances the artist’s sensitivity to subtle tonal variations. 6. Misconceptions About Bright Studio Lighting Contrary to popular belief, bright lighting in a studio is detrimental to color accuracy. Excessive brightness leads artists to lower chroma values in their palette to counterbalance the intense illumination, which unintentionally causes the paintings to appear darker and more muted when seen under normal or dimmer lighting conditions. 7. How a 60-Watt or Lower Light Source Improves Color Perception Using a lower wattage light source improves color and luminosity perception by limiting excessive brightness that can blind the eye to subtle hues. It enables an artist to focus on tonal relationships carefully, producing paintings with a balanced color range and lively surface quality. Dimmer lighting conditions enhance the perception of glow and depth in a painting. 8. Challenges of Painting in Diff
