Business - How to Make Your Clients More Sticky With Lewis Potts, Part 230 Jun 202400:38:05

In this episode of the Stay Hungry podcast, Joel Stone and Lewis Potts discuss the intricacies of customer expectations and business growth strategies. They explore how defining a niche and understanding shared goals are crucial steps in creating a successful business journey. The conversation highlights the importance of setting clear expectations as a business owner and the impact of meeting, rather than exceeding, customer expectations. Joel and Lewis discuss common misconceptions about customer satisfaction and emphasise the need for stability and predictability in client relationships.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Once you’ve got your niche, have an idea of what the common shared end goal is and build a journey. What are the milestones? What are the peaks? What are the struggles they’re going to experience?
  • You, as the business owner, are responsible for setting the expectation and meeting it. If you’ve got a paying customer with an insane expectation of what should happen, that’s because you’ve not done your job.
  • 89% of businesses say that they aim to exceed their customer’s expectations. Less than 1% of customers, that did the same set of research, care. 99% of customers simply want their expectations met.
  • 99% of customers simply want their expectations met, not exceeded. The gap is that at no point has the service provider asked them what their expectations are.
  • People spend too long trying to exceed their client’s expectations. All your customers want is security, stability, and predictability.
  • There’s loads of problematic behaviours in businesses that stop them from being able to grow. What’s the goal? What's currently stopping you from getting to it? And what are we going to do about it?

Mindset - Live Boldly, Authentically and Aligned with your Values25 Sep 202200:34:25

In this episode, Joel sits down with Carla Reeves who is a coach and mentor that helps hyper achievers who want to build a business without negatively impacting their personal lives. She helps them to find and maintain balance. Carla explains how her own experience led to her pursuing this passion.

During the podcast, she shares valuable strategies and tips that anyone can use to help them to live a bold, authentic life that is aligned with their values. Something that automatically leads to success in both their personal and business lives. She explains how to be the entrepreneur of your own life (life-preneurship), which includes learning to use the skills that make you successful at work to achieve success in your personal life.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Often, friction within relationships goes hand in hand with success. But it does not need to be this way. In the podcast, Carla explains how to avoid this situation.
  • Many people keep bumping up against the same barriers in life, repeating the same mistakes.
  • Most people have a survival model they developed in crisis, which is OK. But it is not healthy to keep using that model when you are not in crisis.
  • Everyone has habits. How you treat people, use money, what you eat etc. That´s not always bad. But as life changes your habits also need to change.
  • Journalling enables you to be honest about what you think and feel. The more you write freely the easier it is to also be your true self in life.
  • Journalling empties the trash. It gets rid of the noise, which builds up in your head.
  • Writing down what you want to achieve from a conversation, meeting or activity is incredibly powerful.
  • Putting your thoughts down on paper slows you down enough to see what is really important.
  • Play, adventure and relaxation all create fuel to help you to work better, so make time for them.
  • Before you do something, ask yourself – Does this align with the life I want to create? Doing this acts as a filter which keeps your personal life aligned with your values and you on track.
  • When you get your thinking, your behaviour and your actions all working in the same direction with your values, amazing things start to happen.

BEST MOMENTS

‘I had become a master of making everything look good on the outside. But I didn´t know how to take care of the inside. ´

‘The first piece of work I do with people is to uncover what I call their survival model.’

‘The secret to confidence is kind of realising that nobody has it. Everybody´s brain is trying to protect them.’

In this episode, Joel, and Andy talk about how LinkedIn has changed…and not for the better.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • The LinkedIn algorithm is favouring clickbait and virtue signalling, right now.
  • Pictures of fit people without their tops on or wearing tight shorts also have more reach.
  • It is hard to cut through all of the noise right now, to the point where people are deciding their energies are better used elsewhere.
  • Your best organic tactic on LinkedIn, at the moment, is to employ a VA to old DM people in a very authentic way.
  • Now is a good time to look again at old-school methods like direct mail or business cards.

BEST MOMENTS

‘Is LinkedIn a loud, bloody awful place to be at the moment? ´

‘It´s not a sex thing.’

‘Just because you are B2B don’t feel the pressure to post on LinkedIn, ten times a week.’

Marketing - There's No Point in Marketing Without Sales07 Aug 202200:40:44

In this episode, Rob Austin, from SME Skills, and Joel have an in-depth chat about the sales function of a business. They tackle sales stereotypes and how to ask powerful, authentic questions in your sales process.

They discuss why every business needs a sales process, why you are not the main character in your prospects' story and why getting a "no" is still a result. As well as how to take the fear out of picking up the phone. They also explain how to trick Jordan Belfort into buying his own pen and much more besides…

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Most people think about the act of making a sale negatively.
  • Marketing does not have that stigma.
  • There is no point in marketing if you don't follow through and make sales.
  • To sell effectively you must get your mindset right. How to do that is discussed in the episode.
  • You must 100% understand what you are doing. That is only possible through practice. Don't wing it.
  • When selling, give people options that will genuinely get them to where they want or need to be.
  • You must care and genuinely want to deliver for the prospective client.
  • Realness is essential, people know when you are not being genuine and react badly when you try to deceive them.

BEST MOMENTS

‘For some reason, sales have this stigma. ´

‘I think business owners with sales and marketing are terrified of rejection.’

‘Take the time and really build the rapport.’

Joel and Ryan, both film lovers, reference many films as they discuss the power of video with a particular discussion about the best Rocky film.

  • There is a sense of fun that you don’t get with Instagram.
  • If you provide entertainment, your following will grow super-fast.
  • Build a following and authority using fun, then slowly drip in the business stuff.
  • Your business is not all about you. Your content must be client focused and give them what they need.
  • Social media should be used to start conversations. Only when people reach your funnel can you start to sell to them.
  • Money is a by-product of success. Helping people must be your priority. When it is, success follows.

BEST MOMENTS

‘Reels are your best chance of growing organically and getting engagement. ´

‘Instagram is putting its focus towards being a more video dominant platform.’

‘Using video as a tool for storytelling has been the most impactful thing.’

Mindset - The Importance of Journaling24 Jul 202200:32:51

In this episode, Joel, and Andy talk about why journaling is important and how they have benefited from doing it themselves. They share how it has helped them in their personal and work lives to gain insight into what matters, focus, get more done and de-stress. All things anyone can benefit from too, simply by giving journaling a go.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Journaling might not work for everyone. But it is 100% worth giving it a go.
  • Journaling is a fantastic way to cut through the noise. To identify what you need to do and stay on track when doing it.
  • Look for and acknowledge your wins. Find three wins every day and write them down.
  • Do your journaling early in the day. Take ownership of your morning.
  • Make sure that you note down how you are feeling. That will help you to keep what happened during the day in context.
  • If your primary goal is to earn more money, you will never be satisfied or happy.

BEST MOMENTS

‘Nothing woo woo here, we don’t do woo woo. ´

‘Until I journal, if I am honest, I didn’t know what my priorities were.’

‘Forcing yourself to sit down and write, forces you to think.’

Business - How to Make Your Clients More Sticky With Lewis Potts, Part 123 Jun 202400:33:10

In this episode of the Stay Hungry podcast hosted by Joel Stone, he sits down with guest Lewis Potts to explore essential strategies for success. From the importance of objectivity in decision-making to the transformative power of leadership and dedication, Joel and Lewis discuss practical insights that resonate beyond the sports field. They also talk about the significance of building a niche around shared challenges, emphasising universal principles applicable to any industry or endeavour.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • You’ve got to be objective about things. It’s tough in some situations but you’ve got to zoom out and look at it from a birds-eye-view. Deal with facts not feelings.
  • I captained every American football team I ever played for, so I had to be a leader and the one who made decisions and stuck by them. It amplified who I was as a person. You had to be dedicated to it.
  •  When I talk to people about niche, I don’t care what they do for work, or if they’re male or female. I want you to build your niche around shared problems.

He realised that to sell successfully you have to put yourself into the shoes of your customer and understand their why. Andy started his marketing career working closely with dozens of Shropshire businesses, all of whom had something different to sell. During that time, Andy picked up the skills he uses today to tailor each marketing solution to his client´s businesses, the industries they work in, and the different types of customers they need to reach.

Marketing - Why Cutting Your Marketing Right Now is Crazy17 Jul 202200:33:48

In this episode, Joel, and Andy sit down to discuss why the UK government’s advice to businesses to cut back on marketing and use that money to offer customers lower prices is bonkers. To the point where doing that could result in that company going under.

They share 5 major problems with that approach. Then, explain what you can do instead.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Marketing is an investment, not simply a cost.
  • The people being squeezed by the cost-of-living crisis will not be the ones buying from the brands that spend a lot on marketing.
  • It is estimated that about a third of businesses that went under during the last recession had cut their marketing.
  • Stopping marketing dead turns your flow of customers off. It is better to retarget what you spend.
  • Marketing is partly about creating a desire for your brand or product. When you don't do it, that desire evaporates.
  • Marketing is about protecting your brand as well as about promotion.

BEST MOMENTS

‘I don’t think anyone can give me an example of where short-termism has worked. ´

‘There is a naivety there in terms of whoever´s come up with this campaign.’

‘Price is only a part of the conversation.’

Growth - Investing For Success With Ben Knight10 Jul 202200:42:11

In this episode, Joel sits down with Ben Knight who is the founder of The Trade Tribe, which simplifies and systemises trading to the point where even an extremely busy entrepreneur can find to do it successfully. Ben explains how he got started in business, going from being 50k in debt to owning his dream home and car.

As well as explaining why and how he founded The Trade Tribe, before sharing examples of the experience his coaching clients have. Finding success by following his approach which is ideal for busy business owners because once set up, it typically takes 5 minutes a day to maintain.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • It is possible to trade successfully, by setting things up so that you spend as little as 5 mins a day doing it.
  • There is no need to settle for being the cog in the machine we are taught to be, from primary school.
  • Your money does not go on holiday, get sick or need sleep. You can have it working for you 24/7 earning you more.
  • Money does improve things. Having enough gives you choices. For example, you can offload all the things you don't like doing.
  • Investing in yourself includes spending money on things that make your life easier e.g., getting a cleaner.
  • Invest enough money to keep you interested. Most people won't pay enough attention to an investment if it is only £200.
  • Never invest more than you cannot afford to lose.
  • Tap into the power of compounding, by reinvesting most of what you make.
  • Much of the fear is generated by the media.
  • Ben provides his clients with a checklist. Enabling them to quickly assess the suitability of a company for investment.
  • Get a coach or mentor and learn from other people's mistakes
  • As a business owner, you have assets you can leverage.

BEST MOMENTS

‘Your money will work harder for you than any human ever could.’

‘With five to ten grand I think you will see the sort of returns that would make a difference in life which is worth it.’

‘Either way, you pay.’

Marketing - You Must Have a Vision04 Jul 202201:05:46

It’s the 200th episode of the Stay Hungry Podcast, join Joel and Andy as they celebrate this achievement by talking all about the importance of vision! They explore why they have focused on marketing as a topic on the podcast, and discuss a range of topics including the role having a vision plays in guiding you in both your business and personal life; including the sacrifices and challenges this can pose.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Having a vision is separate to a goal. It’s not about the destination but about the journey.

  • Start your day with intent and write your non-negotiables; what do you want to get out of that day? People go round in circles because they have no vision to guide them.

  • If you’re clear on your vision, then you can be clear about the things you shouldn’t and won’t be doing.

  • If you start your business and you aren’t well connected, then traditional networking is a great way to get started and learn how to communicate and make connections in your industry

  • No one likes feeling 'discomfort' and this is why people and businesses can give up too easily. You have to learn and have the bravery to push past this point of difficulty.

  • You don’t learn your biggest lessons from your wins, they come from your losses. It’s ok to get it wrong and fail, what's important is what you take from it to grow and build success.

  • When looking to take on your first recruit, ask yourself two questions, what do you hate doing and what will make the ‘ship go faster’? That will tell you what position to hire for first.

  • Never have more than two call to actions on your websites; it dilutes your message and confuses people.

  • The hot pen technique is to simply imagine where you would ideally want to be in life in three years time, set a timer for 15 minutes and put that down on pen and paper. The only rule is the pen can’t leave the piece of paper!

  • Helping people is a good thing to do but you have to take a step back sometimes and analyse if it is the right thing to do, for them, for you and for your family and business too.

  • Covid and lockdowns allowed many people to re-evaluate their situations, Joel and Andy weren’t immune to this. It made them realise everything they had and what mattered to them and their families the most.

BEST MOMENTS

“Your vision can’t be right if it’s forcing you to do so much that you dislike”

“As a business owner, your personal vision and your business vision need to knit together”

“All forms of networking are always going to be important, but you’ve got to be selective with all of them”

“I used to have a real fear of failure and I taught myself there’s no such thing”

Mindset - What Are Your Non-Negotiables26 Jun 202200:36:07

In this episode, Joel, and Andy talk about what their non-negotiables are and why they are so important to them. The difference that sticking to them makes to how they feel and perform.

They share some marketing non-negotiables you could set. Providing you with the insight you need to focus your attention on the right platforms and tasks.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Without non-negotiables you are letting external forces determine your day.
  • With non-negotiables you are in firm control.
  • Having non-negotiables for each area of your business is highly effective.
  • Spend a specific hour of your day doing nothing else but marketing.
  • Post something effective on social media every day.
  • Reach out to a certain number of people each day. Have a specific goal in mind when you do.
  • Reading your emails before completing your non-negotiables is usually not a good idea.
  • Set daily, weekly, and monthly non-negotiables.
  • Be realistic about how many non-negotiables you can set. You can only do so much.
  • Getting started early is a good way to get stuff done. The morning is a good window for non-negotiables.
  • Build breathers into your day to relax, feed your mind and support your body.

BEST MOMENTS

‘I think it is very good to start the day with some movement. ´

‘Email is one of the biggest killers, if not the biggest, killer of productivity.’

‘In terms of non-negotiables, there is no right or wrong. It is what works for you.’

Marketing - What Top Gun Can Teach Us About Marketing19 Jun 202200:31:34

In this episode, Joel, and Andy explain what Top Gun can teach us about marketing. It may seem like a bit of a stretch, but once you have listened to the episode you will see that a film about an elite training centre for US Navy pilots is indeed a font of knowledge for any business owner.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • You are never going to succeed on your own. You can only do so much.
  • It is no good putting all of your eggs into one marketing basket.
  • Don´t go too broad. Focus in on the person that will actually buy from you.
  • Be careful that your default mindset is not negative.
  • Get comfortable with the idea that some things are going to be hard.
  • Sometimes going back to things that worked in the past is a good idea.

BEST MOMENTS

‘With marketing, you cannot rely on one component alone. ´

‘You need to be laser-targeted.’

Marketing - Leaning Into It With Liam Walsh12 Jun 202200:38:59

In this episode, Joel speaks to one of his coaches, Liam Walsh. He helps fitness coaches to focus on what they need to do to maximise their income. Enabling them to earn well without having to burn themselves out.

Liam explains what setting up two businesses taught him and how he applied those lessons to what he is doing now. He explains why you must not be afraid to speak up if something does not feel right, ask questions and be willing to push through tough times. As well as how having a plan and executing it consistently enabled him to go from zero clients to earning 13.5K a month, in under 5 months.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Everyone tends to jump from one thing to another, wasting energy by not following through.
  • Be clear about what you want from your business. How it will benefit you and your family.
  • When you start a business with someone be clear about what each of you wants from it and set boundaries.
  • If you are in business and you think something is not right, speak up sooner rather than later. When you don´t everyone wastes lots of time and energy.
  • Never be afraid to reinvest in yourself to get time back by outsourcing everything that you can.

BEST MOMENTS

‘Having a plan laid out…stops them going off on too many tangents and ultimately procrastinating. ´

‘I hate losing. But it´s OK to lose provided you learn from it.’

‘You´ve gotta lean into your discomfort, big-time.’

‘Everything in your business can be passed on (outsourced).’

Mindset: Everything's Toxic22 May 202200:33:40

In this episode, Joel, and Andy discuss why, right now, everyone is referring to virtually anything that does not fit in with their worldview and narrative as being toxic. They talk about how this over-sensitivity has come about, and the damage it can do to you and others.

They then share ways to stop yourself from getting sucked into looking at everything in that jaded way. Explaining how to keep things in balance. To see the world as it really is, yet still be ready to handle genuinely toxic situations and people, in a healthy way.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • The word toxic means something that is extremely harmful or unpleasant, in a pervasive or insidious way. That is not how the word is being used now.
  • When someone disagrees with us, their views are not automatically toxic.
  • Thinking everything is toxic, closes your mind. Not being ready to listen to others is bad for business.
  • When you think everything is toxic you become hyper-sensitive and scared to put your head above the parapet e.g., use social media to grow your business.
  • You can't always avoid exposing yourself to toxicity, especially in business.
  • Be ready to handle toxic situations you can't avoid in a healthy way.
  • Choose when and how you put your head above the parapet.
  • Take responsibility, if someone is upsetting you, challenge them or stay away from them.
  • If life feels like a grind, seek out the people that lift you up.
  • Look after yourself physically and mentally. It helps to make you more resilient.

BEST MOMENTS

‘My sensitivity to the situation was hindering me.’

‘If you are feeling like everything is toxic. No. 1 have a look at what you are surrounding yourself with.’

‘For business owners, it is not always possible to avoid what is deemed toxicity.’

Marketing: Impactful Images to Power Your Business With Martin Irvine15 May 202201:12:12

In this episode, Joel sits down with Martin Irvine the owner and director of Martin Irvine Productions. They discuss the role images play in marketing and how to create ones that have an impact. Images that get noticed, are memorable and convert. Something Martin has been doing for the coaches and fitness leaders that make up the majority of his clients.

They discuss how businesses can still thrive in recession conditions by marketing hard, understanding their customers and being authentic. As well as talking about what it takes to be successful without becoming overwhelmed by your work life.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Some of the most successful businesses in the world have developed out of a recession.
  • Businesses that scaled during CoVid filled the void and are still thriving.
  • First impressions are important. Today, that means getting your social media right.
  • Knowing your market is essential. It’s not enough to replicate what others are doing.
  • The content you put out must be authentic, including your images.
  • When you get your content and images right you get better quality leads.
  • Outsourcing your image creation and marketing frees you up to generate far more income.
  • Do you wash your own car? Or do you pay someone to do it? It makes sense to take the same approach with your business.
  • Bring people who are better than you into your business.
  • Every successful person has people behind the scenes helping them.
  • Test campaigns out long enough to know whether they work. People give up far too quickly.
  • People know the difference between professional images and amateur ones, you can use that to your advantage.

BEST MOMENTS

‘When the market is down, those that market hardest position themselves as the first choice for when the market comes back. ´

‘Be authentic.’

‘I will take more from a challenge than I will allow a challenge to take from me.’

Growth - Growing Your Business Without Losing Your Sanity16 Jun 202400:33:13

In this episode of the Stay Hungry podcast, Andy and Joel tackle essential topics for business success and personal well-being. They discuss the importance of planning for burnout amidst business excitement, achieving work-life harmony, and optimising financial transactions for efficiency. They emphasise the significance of using the right tools over having all tools, and the balance between hustling and sustainability in business ventures.

KEY MOMENTS

  • When you’re excited about something in business, plan for the burnout. You can achieve an awful lot when the fire’s burning, but at some point you are going to hit a brick wall.
  • You need a work/life harmony. You can work hard on your business but then whatever time you spend with your friends and family, you have to be focused and present.
  • You’ve got to be able to take money quickly. There’s nothing worse than chasing someone for money; send them the payment link straight away.
  • It’s not about having all the tools, it’s about having the right tools. For example, having a CRM will save you a lot of time.
  • You’ve got to hustle, but you’ve also got to acknowledge that you can’t hustle forever. Someone, probably you, will suffer for it.

Joel Stone

Joel Stone is a marketer and disciple of business strategy. After seeing the impact of the 2008 recession, he decided to take control and leave employment to set up in business for himself. He quickly built an award-winning design agency, partnering with Andy on numerous projects until they formed Codebreak in 2019.

Having previously helped brands including GlaxoSmithKline, Diageo, Beta Tools, and Channel 4, Joel’s work has been seen all over the world. During that time, Andy picked up the skills he uses today to tailor each marketing solution to his client´s businesses, the industries they work in, and the different types of customers they need to reach.

Marketing: Stop Rolling the Dice on Your Business, Own the Table!01 May 202200:43:57

In this podcast, Joel sits down to talk with Joe DeMaria, CLO at Academy Builders Inc, and founder of Teach to Scale. He explains how he went from selling sweets at school (and getting caught doing it) to becoming a serial entrepreneur. One who has also had great success at transforming several languishing businesses.

He explains why so many firms never break through the $1.2 to $2 million mark and what can be done to stop that from happening. Joe also explains, in detail, how to sell more of the products or services that provide you with the highest profit margin and annually add more profitable products to what you have to offer.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Successful entrepreneurs provide a solution for what are usually very common problems.
  • Too many people build businesses around what we are good at rather than around what customers want and need.
  • Leveraging time only takes you so far. You cannot progress without strategic intent.
  • Don´t neglect market research. Use the data within your company to make informed decisions.
  • Choose the right business method.
  • Offer structure has a massive impact on cash flow and, therefore, success.
  • Focus on selling your highest margin activities.
  • Add a halo tier to your offer. Joe explains why and how.
  • The foundations of your business are critical.
  • Any business can scale by adding new product lines, every year.

BEST MOMENTS

‘A lot of entrepreneurship is about being responsive, not about being creative. ´

‘The problems the best companies in the world solve are the ones that are around us every day.’

‘Market research needs to be a part of everything we touch.’

‘Every business should have product lines, not products.’

Marketing: Do More Of What You're Good At10 Apr 202200:40:23

In this episode, Joel, and Andy speak about how doing more of what you´re good at makes your marketing efforts far more effective. Using David Beckham and several other examples to help the audience to understand how to identify what they should be focusing on.

They also explain why you cannot afford to rely on organic traffic and why you should be backing your successful ads. Rather than doing what a lot of business owners do and trying to boost (fix) the ads that did not do as well. They also discuss the pros and cons of LinkedIn and Facebook ads.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • If you are good at 40% of your job. Double down on doing those things.
  • You can and should be employing people to do the things you are not good at.
  • Specialists always do better than generalists.
  • Generalists are OK at everything. All areas of your business need excellence, not just OK.
  • All business owners want to be good at everything. But nobody can do that.
  • Don´t dilute your efforts e.g., you can´t be across all social media platforms. Focus on the two that bring in the most paying customers.
  • Tap into the power of automation to help you to do more of what you are good at.

BEST MOMENTS

‘We live in a world of generalists. ´

‘Put your focus in the right place, don´t let your ego decide what you work on.’

‘Properly focus on those income-generating tasks.’

Mindset: Nobody Cares Work Harder03 Apr 202200:43:49

In this episode, Joel, and Andy talk about why working hard is still essential. Very few niches enable you to work a few hours a day and make a lot of money. Often, the people who look like they are making money with relatively little work are actually working exceptionally long hours. Andy and Joel explain how you can build yourself up to a point where you can work hard without wearing yourself out and still have a decent family life.

They also launch their new coaching platform and share some details with the audience.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • If your competitor works longer hours than you, they will beat you.
  • Simply working smarter is not enough.
  • There are very few niches where you can work just a few hours a day and succeed financially.
  • Virtually nobody becomes a success overnight.
  • Be willing to do the things that others won't.
  • Spend most of your time on income-generating tasks.
  • Don't take things too far. Understand the need to decompress and ensure you take the time to do it.
  • You can't hustle 24/7.
  • Don´t get addicted to the grind.
  • Use exercise, hydration, and meditation to keep you productive.
  • If you are spending 4 hours a day watching Netflix, just redirecting half of that time can make a huge difference.

BEST MOMENTS

‘Hard work will beat talent, every time. ´

‘If you work 3 days a week but your competitor works 6, they are going to beat you.’

‘When you start working for yourself, work harder… otherwise you are doing yourself a disservice. ´

Marketing: Do You Know What You Do?21 Mar 202200:23:28

Andy and Joel are talking about purpose, mission, and explaining to others what you do.

A good test of this…

Ask your significant other what you do. If they can’t explain it in one clear sentence, chances are you haven’t explained it to them clearly.

And if you can’t explain it to them, imagine how much trouble you’re having explaining it to your potential customers.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Not being clear about what you do and being able to explain it quickly and clearly, in one sentence, to others, is losing you sales.
  • Use one sentence to explain what you do, then invite the other person to ask you some questions.
  • When answering the question, what do I do? try reframing, ask – what do you do to help?
  • We all tend to like to think that what we do is complicated and special.
  • People don´t like arrogance. They like clarity and confidence, which a succinct explanation of what you have to offer them, helps to convey.
  • Allow the person you are talking to, to be in control of the conversation. That way, you will learn more about what they want from you.
  • The most effective brands in the world keep things simple.

BEST MOMENTS

‘If you can´t, explain to people what you do in one sentence, and say it with clarity and conviction – you’re losing customers. ´

‘Use the partner test... go home and ask your other half – what do I do?’

‘Simplify everything, to its simplest form, where it is still effective.’

Marketing: What Your SEO Guru Doesn't Tell You14 Mar 202200:35:46

Andy and Joel are talking SEO…

There’s no point in having a long-term SEO strategy if all of your goals are short-term.

And even if your goals are long-term, if your website is shocking, making sure it can be found is probably the worst thing you can do.

SEO is a vital tool for the organic growth of a business and should form part of every marketing strategy, but if you haven’t got the fundamentals right, there is no point investing in such a long-term method.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Ranking on the 2nd page of Google is almost as bad as not ranking at all.
  • SEO is useless if your website is rubbish. It won´t convert.
  • It is not enough for your website to look good. It must work well too.
  • To determine whether your site is good, work out whether users are doing what you want them to, while on your website e.g., give you their email address.
  • There are five things your website needs to do, which Joel and Andy share, during the podcast.
  • Demonstrate you understand the person´s problem or desire and that you have what they need.
  • Include your contact details on the homepage. Joel and Andy explain why that matters and how to do it.
  • If most people buy from you on the phone, make that number the most prominent contact detail on your website.
  • Retargeting is essential.
  • There is no point in ranking for a search term that nobody searches for.

BEST MOMENTS

‘If you are driving any traffic to your website…if the website is @#$% they are going to think you are @#$%. ´

‘Our best B2B, most qualified, leads come from mobiles at weekends.’

‘Identify how people communicate with your business…and include that contact detail on your website.’

‘Where’s the best place to hide a dead body? …. On page two of Google.’

Marketing: The Fortune Is In The Follow Up07 Mar 202200:38:30

In this episode, Joel, and Andy speak about why not following up means that you are leaving a lot of money on the table. They explain how to set the scene when following up on a lead, why even if someone turns down a proposal that should never be the end of the conversation, and how to set an attractive price. As well as sharing several more tips any business owner can use to improve their follow-up and secure more custom.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • How much money is being left on the table in your business? – the answer is …a lot.
  • Don´t be British reserve stop you from chasing for an answer after you have sent a proposal to someone.
  • If a proposal says they are going to use another supplier, ring them later to see how they are getting on. Joel explains how that will generate work for you.
  • Pitch your best package first. If they don´t need it or can´t afford it, this opens up the opportunity to offer them a lower-cost package.
  • Do not wait too long before getting back in touch when someone contacts you.
  • Many firms are missing inquiries because of poor business processes. In the podcast, Joel and Andy explain how to solve that issue.
  • Sometimes people want to buy. But life gets in the way, they get busy and contacting you just slips down their list, so be persistent.
  • Focus on people that you can help and do a good job for.

BEST MOMENTS

‘Sometimes you’re sitting on money. It´s in your existing database. People who have inquired that you have not followed up with. ´

‘Always offer the premium package first.’

‘If you think you are bothering people, your email content is definitely wrong.’

Marketing - The Power of Niching Down: How to Dominate Your Market by Specialising09 Jun 202400:31:56

In this episode of the Stay Hungry podcast, Andy and Joel unravel the secrets to business success. From niche targeting to effective communication strategies, they explore how businesses can thrive in today's competitive environment. Listen in as Andy and Joel share invaluable insights and practical tips to help businesses differentiate themselves and achieve growth.

KEY MOMENTS

  • There’s an element of niching in every business, because you might not be niching on service, but you could be on the customer/audience that you serve.
  • An FAQ section on a website is a strong way of overcoming the most common objections. It’s not frequently asked questions, it’s frequently encountered objections.
  • You have to think about what makes you different, particularly when you’re writing. Use the three W’s: who, what, and why. People are more likely to give their money to a family-run business rather than a faceless corporation.
  • The best objection to overcome is one that the prospect hasn’t even thought of yet.

Mindset: Stay Energised with Sasha Buy from The Coaching Club28 Feb 202200:34:15

In this episode, Joel chats to Sasha Buy, founder and energetic leader of the Coaching Club.

Sasha helps busy and burnt-out women to become the BEST version of themselves.

She explains what leads to burnout and how to turn things around. To be able to take care of your responsibilities, but do so without pushing yourself to breaking point, and beyond. Currently, The Coaching Club is targeted at women, but everyone can use her approach to bring harmony to their life

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Many people, especially women, put themselves last.
  • Focusing on looking after the family, friends and delivering at work to the point where there is nothing left for you leads to disaster.
  • When you are unhappy and exhausted, it has a negative impact on everyone around you.
  • Often, the smallest changes make the biggest difference (diet, exercise, work, relationships). In the podcast, Sasha explains how to identify the best changes for you.
  • When you make a change that makes you feel better, the ripple effect means it has a positive impact on everyone around you.
  • Use movement to help you succeed. When we move our bodies, it helps to create positive emotions.
  • Working without breaks is not productive.
  • A few times a day, give yourself a few minutes to reset mentally and physically.
  • Asking for help is not a weakness.
  • Everyone gets their wins in different ways.
  • Positivity comes from within.
  • It takes a lot of effort to be selfless and put yourself last. Channel that discipline to form new habits that enable you to be healthier and happier.
  • Think about what will happen in 5 years if you carry on putting yourself under too much pressure. Then, use that to drive yourself to change.

BEST MOMENTS

‘It is important to make yourself a priority. ´

‘What is the thing we can focus on first to move the needle. It is just habit stacking.’

‘We start with you, that drop in the water, the ripple then affects everyone and everything around you.’

Marketing: How To Sell With Solution-Based Selling21 Feb 202200:40:31

In this episode, Joel, and Andy explain why great salespeople understand that selling is all about listening to someone´s problems and desires. Then, providing solutions. Something very few people do. So, those entrepreneurs that do take the time, sell when others fail to do so.

  • Learn about copywriting and keep practicing to improve.
  • Use short sentences to make your copy easy to digest.
  • If possible, you want to be sending emails to your list at least once a week.
  • You are not bugging someone if you are providing real value.
  • Things change, which means your copy has to be constantly reviewed and updated.
  • When you are 85, 90% happy with your copy just get it out there.
  • Get a fresh perspective before publishing your copy.

BEST MOMENTS

‘Bad copy can do more harm than good.’

BEST MOMENTS

‘Get the biggest bang for your buck. Know that the money you are spending is attracting the people most likely to buy. ´

‘Nail your niche.’

‘If you want campaigns that are going to serve you well for the long-term, then you're better off going a bit slower at the beginning.’

In this episode, Joel speaks with Rob Moore about scaling your business to seven figures, as both Joel and Rob have already done. They discuss how business owners and entrepreneurs can set themselves up to be ready to benefit from, rather than suffer, from rapid or drastic changes.

Rob explains why when CoVid struck he briefly bought into the panic, started to firefight, and lost momentum. How he recognised this, recovered the situation, and ended up growing far fast than he had before the pandemic.

  • Stay on vision, stay on mission. Be yourself no matter what. (quote)

  • Learn to transcend criticism and negativity.
  • You have to let go to grow. Hire people to do admin etc, so you can focus on the things only you can do.
  • Find mentors.
  • Be true to yourself and learn to be happy with who you are.
  • Focus on doing what you are good at, stop struggling to do what you are not good at, hire someone instead.
  • Look out for opportunities in uncertain times.

BEST MOMENTS

‘Don´t get ready, be ready. ´

‘The three Cs – Comfort, complaints, and complacency are not growth attributes. They are atrophy attributes’

‘No matter what´s going on around me know who I am, know my role and manage my own emotions.’

‘The more you like yourself, the less you need to be liked by others.’

Marketing: The Most Common Mistakes in Marketing24 Jan 202200:26:03

In this episode, Joel, and Andy talk about the most common mistakes people make when marketing. Issues they come across repeatedly.

They explain what people do wrong and, more importantly, provide some simple fixes business owners can use to make their marketing effective.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Consumers respond to visuals, so invest in professional photos, images, and videos.
  • Even with access to great tools, someone who is not a designer is highly unlikely to produce good results.
  • Experience matters. Someone who does marketing all day, every day is bound to have a better understanding than someone who does it a few hours a week.
  • The world of marketing moves fast. What works today, may not tomorrow. You always have to be one step ahead.
  • Be consistent and persevere. You will make more than if you keep trying to make a quick buck.
  • Only post content that either educates inspires or entertains.
  • Measure everything.
  • Niche down to identify your customer and get good at providing what they need.
  • Email is a vastly underused and extremely effective tool.
  • It is more effective to upsell to an existing customer or get them to refer a friend.

BEST MOMENTS

‘There are plenty of people out there that are good at football. There aren´t too many David Beckhams out there. ´

‘If you treat marketing as a part-time job, you´ll get part-time results.’

‘Anything you do in marketing should be measurable.’

Marketing: Top Tips for Lead Generation17 Jan 202200:33:10

In this episode, Joel, and Andy talk about how to use paid ads for effective lead generation. Tips any business owner can use to get the information they need to turn a potential customer´s interest into a sale. Data that can also turn existing buyers into highly valuable repeat customers.

They discuss how to do lead gen ethically. As well as how to target, test, and measure to ensure that campaigns are effective. As well as sharing ways to keep the costs down and improve ROI.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Lead gen is using paid ads to reach people who are interested in your product and providing you with the data you need to turn them into buyers.
  • Paid ads are laser targeted, which saves time, effort, and money.
  • You must put adequate tracking and data collection in place. In the podcast, Joel and Andy explain how to do that.
  • If you want someone´s data e.g., their contact details you need to offer them something (a lead magnet).
  • Never assume. Always test, and measure.
  • Tap into the fact that people are now more willing to give out their phone numbers.
  • Often, the more specific the audience is, the less the ad costs and the better it converts.
  • Follow up on every lead and have a detailed sales process in place.
  • Genuinely solve problems for people, so they will want to buy what you have to offer.
  • Being banned from a social media platform is far less disastrous when you have a database of emails etc, to send promotions to.

BEST MOMENTS

‘Lead Gen is using paid ads to get the kind of customer data that is most likely to convert into a paying customer. ´

‘Lead magnets can work really well.’

‘You have to follow up and have a detailed sales process.’

Mindset: Health and Mindset for Business Owners with Ali Maclean03 Jan 202200:27:07

In this episode, Joel speaks to Ali Maclean who has been involved in martial arts, since the age of 7. Competing professionally at the age of 17 as a professional Ultimate Fighter. He is now a coach and a mentor.

Ali explains how he struggled when he had to give up fighting. He and Joel discuss coping with not being able to do as much as you age, how to handle toxic masculinity and the importance of improving your mental health. Ali explains how he uses meditation, gratitude, affirmations, and mindfulness to help himself and his clients.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Understand how you are self-sabotaging yourself. Most of us do it.
  • Procrastination is a form of self-sabotage.
  • As you age, how much you do changes. This needs to be recognised. You need to adapt and refocus.
  • Many people lack routine, structure, and discipline. Without that, you waste a lot of time and energy.
  • Don´t leave your health, fitness, career, or personal life to chance.
  • If you let negative thoughts start to embed, they negatively affect every area of your life.
  • You need to look after yourself to be able to help others.
  •  A lot of men still don´t feel comfortable talking about their problems.
  • If you can´t, be alone and content with your own thoughts. You need to look at what is wrong.
  • Meditation is essential if you want to think clearly and be able to make sound decisions.
  • Gratitude affirmations are highly effective at transforming your mindset.
  • You have to believe in your personal affirmations.
  • Take a moment to relax and enjoy your achievements.
  • Everyone needs rest. If you overdo it, the damage is huge and, often, long-term.

BEST MOMENTS

‘If your mind is spread amongst 3 or 4 different things, they all kind of dilute. ´

‘The routine, the discipline, and being around a group of like-minded people cannot be replaced.’

‘If your own jug is empty, you can’t fill everyone else’s glass. You can’t help your family.’

‘Gratitude overpowers everything.’

In this episode, Joel speaks to Alex McCarthy who is a business mindset coach. She predominantly helps service-based entrepreneurs to scale their businesses in a fun way. Using an approach that creates maximum freedom. Alex is a trained coach and NLP practitioner.

Joel and Alex discuss why when it comes to mindset the holistic approach works best. As well as how our belief systems affect us, how to handle negativity, and how to overcome the doubts that plague everyone.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Most entrepreneurs start working for themselves because they want more freedom.
  • Everyone has a slightly different idea of what freedom looks like.
  • You have to create freedom goals within your entrepreneurial journey.
  • You have to look at your whole life when resetting your mindset.
  • We all hang on to belief systems. Some that we picked up in childhood e.g., money is the root of all evil.
  • Choose who you share your vision with. Not everyone is going to understand, which can pull you down.
  • Follow the people that represent everything that you want to be and achieve.
  • You don't have to have every step figured out, just move towards what feels inspiring and exciting.
  • Move away from what feels constricting to you.
  • Little steps add up to something big.

BEST MOMENTS

‘The reason I started my entrepreneur journey was all about freedom. ´

‘You´ve got to be receptive in a coaching scenario.’

‘You don't have to have the whole 100 steps figured out…. Just move towards what feels inspiring.’

Marketing: Visual Mastery for Coaches and Consultants with Graham Hurst06 Dec 202100:32:56

In this episode, Joel speaks to Graham Hurst who in just 18 months grew what was intended to be a side hustle into a full-blown coaching business that required him to hire staff. Something he was able to do, largely because of the way he used social media. He now uses those skills to coach other business owners. Doing so in a quite different way.

Graham and Joel share numerous tips that any business can use to become more effective at selling on social media and in other ways. They also discuss how to attract the type of clients you want to work with and keep control of when you work.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Social media has been key to turning a side hustle into a large business in just 18 months.
  • You only have 0.3 seconds to catch someone´s eye on social media.
  • No matter how beautifully written or produced what you publish is, if it is not eye-catching people won´t read it.
  • So many people try to sell a $997 product using a $5 image, which doesn´t work.
  • Look at the way products of a similar price point are marketed and learn from that.
  • You cannot serve every audience the same type of image.
  • Always go back to the metrics.
  • Study copywriting to find out how to get people to read the next line.
  • Once you get people reading your copy, work on being more relatable.
  • Sharing one of your interests helps you to make a connection. People prefer to work with someone they feel they can go for a beer with.
  • Only start selling once you have made a proper connection.
  • There are no trade secrets, so just jump in and share what you know. The chances are that they won´t be able to do it and will ask you to do it for them.

BEST MOMENTS

‘Once people start to read your content, start building that relatability.’

‘Use open loops to get people to ask more questions.’

‘Tell people what they need to know. But nine times out of ten they’re going to say can you just do it for me.’
