| Stanford Seminar - Robots that aren't afraid of contact, an embodied approach | 30 oct. 2026 | 00:56:38 | |
January 12, 2024Hannah Stuart, UC BerkeleyThe world is rich with complex and varied mechanics, which often leads to robots that tend to avoid contact due to uncertainty. However, this richness also opens opportunities for new robotic mechanisms that creatively harness the local environment. In this talk, I'll focus on two recent case studies that use ambient fluids for resilient and compliant grippers with tactile sensing. These inventions apply to logistics pick-and-place automation, as well as more generalized applications. Time allowing, I will also provide another case study in granular media (i.e. sand) interaction for planetary robotics. Inspired by nature, the goal of this research is to access new and resilient robotic behaviors without an over-reliance on digital computing alone, but rather by harnessing morphological computation alongside active control.Uploaded 23-01-24About the speaker: https://me.berkeley.edu/people/hannah-stuart/

| Stanford Lecture - Dancing Cells, Dr. Donald Knuth I 2023 | 29 oct. 2026 | 01:39:31 | |
Don Knuth's 27th Annual Christmas Tree LectureDecember 6, 2023This talk is sort of a sequel to “Dancing Links”, the Christmas Lecture of 2018, because there have been surprising new developments since then—stimulated by the work of Christine Solnon at INSA de Lyon.Uploaded 22-01-24When a computer program explores a large space of possibilities, it needs good data structures that are able to undo every tentative decision that has been made, thereby allowing new decisions to take their place. The dancing links idea is a simple modification of a 60-year-old method (doubly linked lists), which is particularly suited to undoing. As a result, algorithms based on dancing links have become the method of choice for exploring the set of solutions to a huge variety of combinatorial problems. The dancing cells idea, similarly, is a simple modification of a 30-year-old method (sparse-set representation), and it provides efficient support for that same wide class of applications. Indeed, programs based on dancing cells often turn out to be significantly faster than the analogous programs based on dancing links. And again, there is exquisite choreography!See more from Don Knuth: https://online.stanford.edu/donald-e-knuth-lectures► Check out our entire catalog of courses and programs: https://online.stanford.edu/explore

| Stanford Seminar - Harnessing Data for Social Impact | 29 oct. 2026 | 01:04:29 | |
Harnessing Data for Social Impact: Empowering Communities through Visualization and Social ComputingJanuary 12, 2024Narges Mahyar of University of Massachusetts AmherstUploaded 22-01-24Today's world faces several complex problems, such as climate change, transportation, infrastructure, education, and healthcare. Technology, if designed right, can play an essential role in informing people, raising awareness, sharing data, and connecting communities and decision-makers to take data-informed actions. In this talk, I present examples of my recent work on building and studying community-centered tools to empower the general public to engage in real-world socio-technical problems such as urban planning and climate change and bring their ideas and comments for shaping future policies. These examples demonstrate my multidisciplinary approach in combining information visualization, HCI, applied ML, and human-centered AI to design and build innovative tools and technologies to address complex socio-technical problems. I then describe a vision for expanding my research to further advance democracy, equity, well-being, and sustainability by fostering the inclusion and empowerment of marginalized populations. I also briefly present my work on inclusive data visualization to empower the public to understand the data that is increasingly part of their lives and make better data-informed decisions. I close with a discussion of how my work can be applied to other socio-technical problems, such as health informatics and learning sciences.About the speaker:Narges Mahyar is an Assistant Professor in the Manning College of Information and Computer Sciences at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. | Stanford CS153 Frontier Systems | Teaching AI to Touch Atoms | 29 oct. 2026 | 00:47:53 | |
For more information about Stanford's online Artificial Intelligence programs, visit: https://stanford.io/aiFollow along with the course schedule and syllabus; visit: https://cs153.stanford.edu/In this CS 153 Frontier Systems lecture, Periodic Labs cofounders Liam Ferriss and Dorje Chubak — veterans of OpenAI's post-training team and DeepMind's Genome project, respectively — walked students through their eleven-month-old mission to apply AI to the physical world, specifically using autonomous labs to accelerate the discovery of new materials including high-temperature superconductors.Uploaded 29-09-26Operating out of a 40,000-square-foot Menlo Park facility where machine learning researchers work alongside physicists and chemists, their AI system (named Onnes, after the scientist who discovered superconductivity in 1908) runs a continuous loop of computational prediction, robotic synthesis, and experimental verification — closing the feedback cycle between digital intelligence and physical reality in a way no purely in-silico approach can. A key early lesson was abandoning their original plan of spending the first year purely computational: building smaller, semi-manual labs first allowed them to direct the research program and understand what to scale, faster. Dorje emphasized that the results of applying LLMs to actual atoms have exceeded even their own expectations, while Liam stressed that sample efficiency in reinforcement learning — not benchmark climbing — is the core technical frontier when physical experiments can't be arbitrarily scaled up the way digital rollouts can. They closed by pushing back on student anxiety about AGI displacing their careers, arguing that most scientific domains remain largely untouched by LLMs, that the bar to make meaningful AI-physical world progress is still surprisingly low, and that the history of civilization is essentially a materials story — making their work, in their view, among the highest-leverage bets anyone can make right now.

| Stanford Faculty - Meet Perry Klebahn | 28 oct. 2026 | 00:07:09 | |
http://scpd.stanford.edu/innovation-and-entrepreneurship/Perry Klebahn is an entrepreneur to the core. He received his Masters from Stanford in the product design program in 1991 and has taught there periodically since 1996. He left Stanford with his degree and his design project -- a snowshoe. He turned his project into a business, creating the Atlas Snowshoe Company. His experience taught him several things: you can't do anything significant on your own, you need a team; and engineering something is not nearly as much fun as marketing what you have engineered. In 2000, Perry sold his snowshoe business and moved to Southern California to run sales and marketing for Patagonia, an outdoor clothing brand. There, he got a chance to market on a global scale, learning to balance the need to drive sales while building a brand with important commitments and a sustainability message. In 2007 he took on a new challenge at Timbuk2, the original bike messenger bag company. As CEO of the San Francisco-based company, Perry focused on delivering custom products and an innovative customer experience. He implemented many techniques used at the d.school at Timbuk2. A founding faculty member of the d.school, Perry teaches classes including: Launchpad, Design Garage, d.Health, and d.leadership. He runs the executive programs for the d.school.Uploaded 27-09-12Professor Klebahn teaches in the Stanford Innovation and Entrepreneurship professional certificate program.
