  • What if you'll do a whole segment on the problem with Capital One. Lani alluded to it but didn't want to get into it. What am I missing? - @AcmeAcresA

  • Intro:  What is the SYPs definition of a catchall?  And can it have FTFs? Does it have to be accepted at almost all merchants? - Keith
    • Main question(s): What is your current catchall card and what do you think is the best catchall card on the market even if you do not have the card?
    • Is there a popular catchall that you think is overrated? If so, why?

  • Would love to hear the team discuss this question I had with a few other CC enthusiasts. Would you rather fly to Asia/Europe directly in premium economy or fly business with a medium/long layover. Personally I'd choose PE, but could see others disagreeing. - KirbyG

  • Have any of you on the panel purchased points strategically for an upcoming redemption or to help meet a SUB? Hilton & IHG are both having limited time points sales with 100% bonus. - JC

  • Given some of Chase's moves and rumored moves recently and the potentially coupon-ey Savor X, any predictions on further couponization/brand partnerships across C1, Citi, & WF? - DDAF

    • Citizen’s latest “top” card has an Annual fee that is flexible based on your relationship with Citizens, is this something you’d like to see to help “manage” some of your Annual fees or do you see this as unnecessary?
  • Lani
    • So Amex came out saying they will refresh the Amex Platinum cards (shocker, i.e. Chase and they do so every 4-5 years). I personally think they are pulling rulers out vs. doing it for business changes. But with so much more money being added to annual fee, competing credits, etc. Is it time to just pick Chase or Amex (based on hypothetical refresh)?

  • RJ
    • We talk a lot about how to manage our set ups if our lives changes or we want to cut down on AFs. But how do you handle preparing for when the banks change the cards when your life doesn’t change?

Viewer Questions

  • If all hotel status was stripped off of cards and you had to pay for it, what would you pay for IHG Platinum (Lani), Hyatt Discoverist (Tariq), Marriott Gold (Matt) and Hilton Gold (RJ). Please consider the multipliers and benefits the status provides and the value you realistically achieve to assign the annual valuation. - AP
    • Maybe change the question a bit in our answers to which status would we pay for?
  • I take that most, if not all of you, are ideally not depleting your points balance all the way to zero/near zero. So my assumption is that occasionally you are paying cash for a trip even though you technically might have the points to cover it. How do you go about making the decision to use points versus cash in that scenario? - DDAF
  • So are annual fees for cards no longer worth it? Looking at the possibilities with no annual fee cards you can access most transfer partners for free between amex, wells Fargo, bilt and capital one. Aside from chase and Citi each ecosystem offers the possibility of obtaining a considerable amount of points. Unless you are looking for a premium benefit is there any other reason to justify an annual fee card for transferrable currencies? - Thic Boii
  • Favorite Futurama character and why? - DDAF

      • Why would Chase try and have the Sapphire card compete with the Platinum when it can create a category of it's own?  What would it take to make the Sapphire your   "one card"? I'm thinking keep the travel credits the way they are, one or two more coupons, 2X catch all, raise the annual fee, 2x in the portal instead of 1.5. Am I asking for too much? - rp2048

  • What's your grail card? And your grail SUB? - Keith
  • Which card or cards do you think are the most beautiful or coolest-looking? And which ones are the ugliest? - DDAF
  • Many times you all have asked for any other bank to add Mobile Wallet as a spending category. The forthcoming Alaska Airlines card is going to have foreign transactions as a spending category. What other spending categories are out there that banks haven't added to good cards would you like to see? - Jason
  • What are your favorite hotel brands inside of Marriott, Hilton, IHG, and Hyatt? (Eg. Westin, Embassy Suites, HIX, Andaz) - AP
  • Now that we find ourselves living in even more uncertain economic times, do you find yourselves using your credit cards less often?  And do you think Americans will prefer cash, debt, electronic payments before using credit as they once did? Will there be any secondary effects with less miles and points generated because the banks pull back on the credit that they are willing to lend to card holders and issue to new applicants? I find myself using my cards much less often than I did at this time last year. - Keith

    • This isn’t a Travel or Credit card topic; but it isn’t just me, general macroeconomics are just broken right? The “Law of Supply and Demand” seems to have died off somewhere, and now it’s just the “Law of what you’re willing to pay” and like…At some point that has to break, right?
  • K1D
    • We all love to travel, but how are credit cards allowing you to have other financial freedoms? What are some of the wins that you have experienced because of credit cards that are not travel or points/miles related?
  • Tariq
    • We’ve all picked our bank ecosystems based on our travel partners (Chase/Bilt for United & Hyatt, Amex for Delta & Hilton), but if you could choose which bank had your transfer partners, which would you choose and why?
  • RJ
    • There was a time when airline ticket prices were regulated. From 1938 to 1978, the Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) oversaw routes, fares, and schedules. That all changed with the Airline Deregulation Act of 1978, which opened the doors to competition. Since then, flights have gotten cheaper—but so has the experience. Gone are the quality meals, spacious seating, and polished service, as airlines now race to offer less for less.
    • Would you support a return to standardized pricing on routes if it meant bringing back the “golden age” of air travel?

  • What are the most useful overlapping transfer partners? For example, Aeroplan is a transfer partner for Amex / Capital One and Star Alliance. Perhaps break it down into domestic and international travel? - Trucker X
  • The Thanos Snap happens and instead of wiping out half of the population, one bank that issues credit cards is no longer. Each of you pick one bank between AMEX, Chase, Citi, and C1 and figure out how the remaining banks respond to fill the void created by the bank that is snapped out of existence - Jason
  • There are some interesting long-term plays in this game - examples might be getting one of the Chase Marriott cards to product change to the Ritz after a year, or timing Southwest card applications to secure the Companion Pass, or at the extreme running seven figures of spend through a Platinum card to fish for a Centurion invite. Which long-term credit card play is the most interesting to you? - SpaethCo
  • Each of you has a different preference as to which points ecosystem you want to primarily earn in for redemptions. Aside from adding the obvious transfer partner (Lani = united, Tariq=Hyatt, RJ =Delta & Hilton, Matt= jet Blue maybe?) What would Wells Fargo need to do to their cards/rewards program for them to become the preferred ecosystem in your wallet. Like for example if they added a grocery category or made bilt points interchangeable or something of that nature would that be enough to entice you to their ecosystem - Thic Boii

Every Kick In the Groin Begins with K19 Apr 202501:51:14

00:00:00 - Welcome to the show!

00:01:38 - Question 1 - For a very long time, people with a “business” have been able to apply for Business credit cards and all the bonuses and perks associated with them despite the fact that their “business” might not be super duper legit. What changes that have nothing to do with “business” verification could banks do to slow this down?

00:09:32 - Question 2 - So how much points diversity is too much points diversity? I currently have points in all 6 transferrable currencies ecosystems. Is it worth it in your opinion to have your points balances split to take advantage of transfer bonuses when they suit you?

00:19:55 - Question 3 - I have a non credit card question for you, if you won $2 million would you keep your job and what would you do for the rest of the year? It's April now so from April to December what would you do and where do you see yourself in 5 years after the winnings?

00:30:17 - Question 4 - We often talk about the credit card game as travel and often coded for middle class folk. How do you think people rebuilding credit or low income earners can effectively and efficiently leverage credit?

00:43:14 - Question 5 - With what seems like a regular series of issues with DCA regarding safety and near misses, what are your thoughts regarding travel to that area? Do you think it’s still incredibly safe and convenient and fly to DCA or do you look to maybe fly into IAD or heaven forbid BWI?

00:53:41 - Question 6 - Question for the podcast, but probably mostly Matt. Wells Fargo has had transfer partners for almost a year now. Does it bother you that they haven't had any transfer bonuses yet?

00:57:49 - News

01:13:34 - Tariq - Store cards. We all know about them, and for the most part we avoid them in the game. What store/retail cards are actually worth getting, and if a certain store closes, does the issuing bank close the account, or do you get an involuntary product change?

01:26:12 - RJ - Should banks have a similar program to hotels/airlines around buying points or being able to have a “subscription“ to points other than the multipliers on the cards? What would you want them to look like?

01:39:41 - Matt - With modular cards an impossible dream, what other incentives, besides credits, do you think issuers could use to provoke more loyalty/dedicated spend?

00:00:00 - Intro

00:00:26 - Opening

00:04:44 - Can you go over when it makes sense to transfer points to hotels (other than Hyatt) because hotel points are always less the 1 cpp and you could do better with things like the cap1 travel eraser or the chase portal with the CSP or CSR. It seems like it makes more sense to either earn those with a cobrand credit card or buy them on sale. - Thic Boii

00:20:49 - Where do you see Priority Pass domestically in 3 or 4 years?  Priority Pass and the bank’s with their own lounges seem to be growing apart. - Keith

00:39:20 - If you could steer the CC YouTube content in a different direction, what would you like to see more of and what would you like to see less of? - Jason

01:07:53 - We see many videos about the extreme success that people have in applying for cards and seemingly NEVER getting denials.  The only time a denial seems to be talked about is when an application goes through a successful reconsideration process.  I personally have scores over 820+ with all the bureaus, a 25+ year old pristine profile and the income/spend to be an attractive customer, and I still get denied for cards.  The question is, how honest are creators being when it comes to how many cards they are NOT actually getting? - Sha-Tan

01:25:21 - We’re a quarter into the year. Do you have at regrets or major course corrections to be made to your travel habits, partners, or overall strategy? - K1d_Cat37

01:39:06 - News

01:47:19 - Tariq - Congratulations! You just won the Powerball jackpot! After taxes you walked away with over $100 million. How do you adjust your strategy now that you don’t need points and miles anymore because you can essentially afford whatever trip you want to take? Do you just go with a flat catch-all card, or do you just get all the premium cards for the benefits? Also, what’s the first trip you’d take once the money hits your account?

02:08:19 - Lani - Quality vs. Quantity; it’s not always about getting the most points: After you hit a certain number of cards, you begin to experience overlap of categories or benefits. Piggy backing on Picking Partners, do you ever use a lower points earning card based on what you need or trying to achieve vs. what can earn the most points. If so when?

02:24:19 - Matt - Wyndham just launched a rewards debit card. After the Durbin Amendment that more or less killed off debit rewards, do you think this is a good play, would you want to see any other companies also take this on?

02:44:05 - RJ - PUJ is better than flat rejection even if it is more opaque. Both in terms of not submitting an app if you can’t get the sub AND in terms of allowing people to decide if the card is worth it for them without a SUB.

  • Now that most premium smart phones cost over $1,500 and are creeping up towards the $2,000 mark, it seems that cell phone coverage through credit cards leaves us with only partial coverage.  Most banks provide between $600 - $1,200 of coverage for lost or damaged phones.  Which cards do you currently use to pay your phone bills, and is there a better overall points-earning card on the market for monthly phone bills? - Keith
  • So I been considering the best route to get status to get a better experience. So if I pick American Airlines as my domestic/ secondary partner I could earn status more specifically by stacking using AA E Shopping portal, AA Dining program, AA travel portal for hotel ie.   Possible spend on credit card. I am considering adding Citi / AADVANTAGE EXECUTIVE WORLD ELITE MASTERCARD ($595) which would provide me some additional benefits when flying on AA steal and would provide me lounge action for the Admiral club when I fly Cathay Pacific. So here’s my theoretical question just imagine
    • That there’s no premium travel cards for you United flyers there’s no premium united club card, there’s no Delta Reserve, and there’s no premium good JetBlue card sorry, Matt. And no stacking ways to build loyalty points. But you have a route to earn status through one your airlines partners such as my is Oneworld. This airline has a a premium credit card that allows you lounge access when you fly your US airlines. And they have all the stacking options. All of the airlines in your in your airline alliance have the same options. So which airline would you pick from the alliance and would you choose to earn status throughout an another airline? - Jared_T

Have you ever been able to book a hotel through an airline portal and also been able to get benefits from your status with that hotel? Example using the United travel portal to book a night at a Hyatt then at check in giving your member number and getting benefits from your status. (I’m thinking of booking a night at a Hilton through the AAdvantage Hotel portal, getting my 10X AA miles from that, giving my Hilton Honors number for breakfast and paying $50 on my Amex Bus Plat for credit and the rest on my aspire card for extra Hilton points) - Anthony

    • The Savor card seems like a lost soul because Capital One makes it so difficult to get their bifecta. (Keith S)
  • AS-HA is the 5th largest airline in the country. They are quite a force in the Western US but fairly irrelevant on the East coast. If AS wanted to greatly expand its reach and be more competitive on a national level they need hubs and focus cities in these locales.  Pick one hub and two focus cities that AS should expand to for future growth (no repeat locations please, otherwise it’ll all be NYC). - AP

  • Do you ever seek out or utilize 0% apr offers? What’s your typical game plan for funds (CD, HYSA, etc) and do you payback gradually or wait till the last month and pay in whole? - AP
  • What is your trigger to get a new card? - Double Double Animal Fries
    • Is it a specific future redemption? The next step in a grand strategy? A really good SUB? Incidental upcoming high spend? An opportunity to try out a new card/ecosystem?
  • What are your endgame setups (no more than 5 cards)? - AP
  • Should Bilt’s points value be reevaluated since they no longer offer transfer bonuses like they used to?  (And American Airlines left the program). (Keith)
    • Let me further elaborate; Bilt convinced some of us to accept 1x earnings (which we normally never would accept) and to hope & wait for Rent Day transfer bonuses to the likes of Aeroplan and FlyingBlue with 150% transfer bonuses.  Those are all but gone and if there is anything decent then the number of bonus points are capped.
    • I finally came to the realization that earning 2x on my VX with a 20%, 30%, or 40% bonus to some of these programs comes out just as good or better than what Bilt is offering on a one-day transfer bonuses every few months. This is the current math since they nerfed double points on Rent Day by 90%.
    • By lowering the Double Points offerings to 1/10 of the original rates and the extremely limited Transfer Bonuses, I no longer see much of the same value in the Bilt program as I once did.
    • You can get 1x on an Alaska or Hyatt card all day long.  If you want Hyatt points then the CFU for 1.5 unlimited and 3x dining is better.

Also a few other lounges within a reasonable walking distance.
    • Lounge Access is getting crazy (in my opinion). Too many lounges with shared access (i.e. Star Alliance, One World status access), priority Pass access, or direct card access

  • There always seems to be a lot of buzz around "travel protections" on cards, but when you dig into the terms only a small subset of events are covered and the insurance generally excludes the really expensive things that a lot of people assume are covered like buying last-minute replacement flights. (Chase specifically never covers additional/alternate transportation on any of their cards) What's your take on these protections, are they appropriately revered or are they overrated, and is your opinion based on personal experience with the claim process? - SpaethCo

Welcome to a new episode of Stack Your Points!

This week we have the full show for you with news, viewer questions and 4 fun topics.

Matt

- Is there such a thing as a “Best Starter ecosystem?” Or should you not worry about how you start in the game? (MC)

Lani * “Why do you have it?” Cards. Card which you do not often use. Card (s) that do not fit within your Main/Plan A strategy. Card(s) that have reward currencies which you would go out of your way to use? * Example: I have Amex Platty. I do not use it to purchase everyday things (unless its an Amex offer or point stack). Does not transfer to United/IHG. Only use points to transfer out or a good deal within Amex travel portal. So why do I have it? (yes, I have an answer why.)

Tariq * Credit card “strategies” that’ll get you on a bank’s bad side. Do people not know/understand the risk, or do they simply not care until they’re hit with the consequences?

RJ * The hosts of Stack Your Points are all sitting at Café Henri in Queens, New York on November 14th in the morning (allowing you to pick the time so you can catch an early flight if you need). We all have our bags with us.  * Using our loyalty programs and the credit cards we have access to, how would each of us get from New York City to Seattle Washington, each traveling solo? * Where would we stay in Seattle if we wanted to stay with a brand we had loyalty with for a five night stay?  * How much did we spend in points and cash? The flight must have at least one layover.

Viewer questions

  • How do you value points when using them to top up a loyalty account?  Say you want to take a flight that has a cash price of either $650 or 50,000 points (1.3cpp).  You currently have a balance with that airline of 40,000 points/miles, and the airline will sell you miles directly for 3 cents each. - SpaethCo
    • Do you transfer 10k points over to make that redemption instead of paying cash, and if so how do you value those 10k points?
      • A. $650, because it saved you from spending $650 out of pocket at that point in time.
      • B. $300, because that's how much it would cost you to purchase the last 10,000 directly from the airline.
      • C. $130, because the whole redemption was 1.3cpp, so 10k points is only worth $130. (Spaethco)
  • We are seeing more tiered SUBS and SUBs with bigger spend requirements.  Do you think SUB spend requirements are going to keep growing or duration or neither? Why do people like Barclays have one transaction SUBs? - AP
  • Question for @RJ  specifically. Knowing the limitations on  SkyMiles and the increased cost of attaining/maintaining Delta status. Would you ever see yourself moving your loyalty? Or is your semi-loyalty purely due to geographic constraints? - K1d_Cat37
  • In your opinion, what is the most underrated no-AF non-Attune card out there? Mine is the Chase Ink Cash - 5x on streaming, phone services, and cable.  AND up to $25k of Visa & M/C gift cards at office supply stores which you could turn into 5x on any category spending like groceries or dinning. - Keith
