499. ESPN Hall-of-Fame Reporter/Broadcaster Tim Kurkjian

Tim Kurkjian was the 2022 recipient of the BBWAA Career Excellence Award presented annually by the Baseball Writers Association of America and is part of the Baseball Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. His tenure at ESPN began in 1998 after stints at the Dallas Morning News, Baltimore Sun, and Sports Illustrated. He is a regular contributor to Sportscenter and Baseball Tonight as well as game coverage. He hosts a baseball podcast with his son Jeff entitled “Is This a Great Game, Or What?” In 2025, he was inducted into the Strat-O-Matic Hall of Fame.


In this episode, Kurkjian discusses how baseball has evolved throughout his illustrious career. He addresses recent rule changes as well as marketing challenges the sports faces. He also offers explains the stadium issues facing the A’s and Tampa Bay Rays.

498. Former NBA/NCAA Player/Broadcaster Len Elmore

Len Elmore, former NBA player and Senior Lecturer in Sports Management at Columbia University School of Professional Studies, joined the show to discuss the evolving role of athlete activism and the stakes in today’s political and social climate. Elmore has served as a college basketball analyst for ESPN and Fox Sports and has served in the same capacity for CBS Sports' coverage of the NCAA Tournament and the NBA. He played in the NBA from 1974 to 1984 for various teams, including the Indiana Pacers, Kansas City Kings, Milwaukee Bucks, New Jersey Nets, and New York Knicks.


In this episode, Elmore gives his take on the current NCAA sports climate regarding NIL money and the transfer portal process. He offered insight into the upcoming Final Four, which features four #1 seeds: Auburn, Florida, Duke, and Houston. He also discusses how players use social media for activism and whether today’s political moment is reaching a tipping point for athlete-led activism. He also commented on the unprecedented growth of women’s sports and what their future looks like amid DEI challenges.

489. Eagles Hall-of-Fame Play-by-Play Announcer Merrill Reese

On Sunday, January 26, 2025, the Philadelphia Eagles clinched their 3rd Super Bowl since 2017 with a 55-23 victory over the Washington Commanders. The Eagles will play the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl 59 on February 9th. Merrill Reese has been the play-by-play voice of the Philadelphia Eagles since 1977. Earlier this season he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame by winning the Pete Rozelle Radio-TV Award. He is synonymous with the Eagles and discussed the incredible run by this 2024-2025 Eagles team.In this episode, Reese explained how this season differs from the two recent Super Bowl teams. He also explained how he gets as excited now for Eagles' games as he did in 1977. He discussed the incredible job General Manager Howie Roseman did in putting this roster together. He focused on the acquisition of running back Saquon Barkley. Reese also discussed coach Nick Sirianni and quarterback Jalen Hurts. Finally, he sized up the matchup between Philadelphia and Kansas City, who are aiming to “three-peat” as Super Bowl champions.

389. NFL Hall-of-Famer James Lofton

Hall of Fame wide receiver James Lofton is now in his ninth season calling games for the NFL on CBS. Widely regarded as one of the greatest wide receivers of all time, Lofton was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2003. Lofton was named to the NFL Pro Bowl eight times. He was also named to four All-Pro teams. He also played in three Super Bowls during his career with the Bills. In his 16 NFL seasons, Lofton caught 764 passes for 14,004 yards and 75 touchdowns. He averaged 20 yards per catch or more in five seasons, leading the league in 1983 and 1984 with an average of 22.4 and 22 yards, respectively. Lofton is the first NFL player to record 14,000 yards receiving.After his playing career ended, he became a wide receivers coach for the San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders. Lofton served as a color analyst and sideline reporter for NFL coverage on Westwood One radio from 1999–2001. In 2009, he re-joined the network to team with Dave Sims and later Kevin Kugler on Sunday Night Football broadcasts. He moved to a television position on the NFL on CBS in 2017. He has been the game analyst paired with 3-time Sports with Friends guest Andrew Catalon since then.In this episode, Lofton previews the upcoming Super Bowl matchup between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs. He also discussed his career, and what he brings to the broadcast booth.

Former Rutgers football player turned broadcaster and entrepreneur Eric LeGrand joined the show. In October 2010, LeGrand suffered a life-threatening career-ending spinal cord injury in the 4th quarter of a game vs. Army. In the years since his catastrophic injury, LeGrand has shown improvement in his medical well-being. He has joined the Rutgers Broadcast team on the Rutgers Radio Network. In 2022, he opened LeGrand Coffee House, and in 2023, is launching LeGrand Whiskey.Last Fall, the New Jersey Devils announced the winning black-owned, New Jersey-based business for this season's Devils Buy Black Partnership, a business and marketing program seeking to expand access and opportunity for Black entrepreneurs.LeGrand Coffee House is located in the Avenue & Green Development at 10 Green Street in Eric's hometown of Woodbridge, New Jersey.In this episode, LeGrand details his health status and gives details on his daily routine. 387. WFAN Creator, Former Seattle Mariners Owner Jeff Smulyan

Jeff Smulyan is known for creating the format of sports radio. Smulyan is the Founder, CEO, and Chairman of the Board of Emmis Broadcasting. In 1987, he created WFAN Radio in New York, the 1st 24-hour sports radio station of its kind. That spawned hundreds of sports radio stations across the country. In 1989, Smulyan lead a group that purchased the Seattle Mariners. In 1994, he was named to the White House as a US Ambassador to head the US Delegation to the Plenipotentiary Conference of the International Telecommunications Union.Living in Indianapolis, Smulyan penned his memoir which was recently this year. It is entitled, “ Never Ride a Roller Coaster Upside Down – The Ups, Downs, and Reinvention of an Entrepreneur.” It can be found here: https://a.co/g9fjkDu.In this episode, Smulyan talks extensively about what went right and what didn't during his tenure as the Mariners' owner. 385. Sunday Ticket Moves From DirecTV to YouTube

In December 2022, the National Football League announced that its Sunday Ticket package, which had been on DirecTV for decades, had signed a 7-year agreement with Google to put the package on YouTube TV and YouTube Premium Channels. The new Sunday Ticket deal could be worth as much as $2.5 billion annually, including payments from YouTube and separate agreements to license the package to businesses including bars and restaurants. RedZone, a popular feature that allows fans to monitor Sunday games when teams get within scoring range, will no longer be available on DirecTV, but the N.F.L. will continue producing its own version of the broadcast. 384. What Went On During The Tragic Damar Hamlin Situation

On Monday, January 2nd, 2023, the Buffalo Bills played the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday Night Football. After a tackle of receiver Tee Higgins during the 1st quarter, Bills Safety Damar Hamlin went into cardiac arrest and had to be administered CPR on the field. Hamlin was eventually revived and then taken in an ambulance to a local hospital. The game was eventually suspended. The NFL said in a statement Tuesday afternoon that the game will not be resumed this week and that no decision has been made regarding playing the remainder of it at a later date. David Moulton is a broadcaster on the Florida Sports Network. He is also a spotter/statistician for Troy Aikman on the Monday Night Football broadcast. Moulton was in the booth when Hamlin went down.
