Drew and The Athletic's deputy managing editor Marc Carig sit down to voice their thoughts on Baseball Reference including Negro League statistics into their database, a step towards recognizing an era in baseball that goes unnoticed more than it should. The duo share why this decision is a positive impact on the game, and what further steps should be made. Though the conversation is buttressed by optimism for the future, there are still pitfalls and shortcomings MLB and other chroniclers need to recognize to keep propelling this movement forward.

Yes, a typical Sunday series pitted against a vicious division rival, what more suspenseful, intense, nail-biting affair could you ask fo...oh...it's 18-4? Wait, what?! 18 to FOUURRRR???? Toronto teed off on Boston in a most glorious fashion. A fashion in which two fashionable podcasters, Drew and Kaitlyn, talk about in today's pod. Diametrically opposed to the jacked offense, is the Jays' languid pen. Is Andrew Miller a pitcher that could reinforce the bullpen? Bo Bichette's play over the weekend reflects his growth at the plate. Vlad is baseball's best hitter, full stop. Also, what we miss most about Rogers Centre.

He and Drew unhinge the truth from fiction in the foreign-substances-on-baseballs discussion. Spider Tack, sunscreen, Elmer's Glue, whatever pitchers use, should it be viewed as a performance enhancer? How does it affect a baseball? What changes have been made to baseballs, themselves, over the last couple of years? Why is Nate Pearson still battling control issues? Dr. Sonne breaks down Pearson's offerings. He also does the same for Alek Manoah. Lastly, the duo dives into Toronto's pitching development approach/results.

Yikes...this slump stinks. With clothespin-pinched noses, Drew and Kaitlyn weave through Toronto's losing streak. With series losses to both Boston and Tampa, is there one underlying shortcoming that can be attributed to their lack of success? Was the sweep by Tampa all the more stinging considering it's...well...Tampa? Why are Tampa's "faceless goons" in the bullpen better than Toronto's "faceless goons" in the bullpen? How are the Rays able to identify unheralded talent better than the Jays? When will we see the best version of Toronto? Are injuries the only thing holding this team back, or will upgrades need to be made? Gurriel Jr. playing 1B is telling about how Toronto views his defense.

Another week of Blue Jays baseball, another bullpen arm inevitably injured. Drew and Kaitlyn ponders when (or if) the injury-prone bullpen heals up and reunites if they'll return to their early-season splendor. How detrimental is losing David Phelps to a lat injury? How will it shape the bullpens for weeks to come? Among the many bright spots on this Toronto team, the bats certainly merit mentioning. Vlad produced homers in three straight games for the first time in his career. Is he nearing Mike-Trout levels of excellence? Marcus Semien has quietly manufactured a strong '21 campaign. How much more can he contribute to this club? Speaking of this club, is playing in Dunedin a reprieve for the Jays, or is it similar to playing in an opponent's ballpark? Semien shares his thoughts on TD Ballpark's advantage/disadvantage. With Boston on the horizon, could Toronto overtake the AL East's top position? Lastly, Drew and Kaitlyn recount their Covid-19 vaccine experience.

Hit it DJ Khaled! "Another one." Yes, Toronto, yet again, swept the Atlanta Braves by orchestrating an impressive, epic come-from-behind-series-finale win. Drew and Kaitlyn muse what Thursday night's resilient win says about the Jays. The duo extrapolate Blue Jays April performances that can carry through the rest of the season, and those that are destined to peter out. The Jays junkies opine over a trio of pressing matters: 1. What's up with Lourdes Gurriel Jr.? 2. Can Nate Pearson be fixed? And what does Kaitlyn think about Pearson's latest challenges. 3. Is it time to call up Alek Manoah? Kaitlyn drops some big knowledge on us, much like big Vlad drops both legs simultaneously to perform the splits. This was really a poor attempt at segueing into KM's Vladdy splits story, nevertheless. Lastly, a look ahead to Phillies-Jays.

If issuing walks and conceding home runs defined a good pitcher, Nate Pearson would be Hall of Fame-bound; however, this is not the case and, therefore, Pearson is pretty bad. So, Drew and change-up specialist Jonah Birenbaum confabulate about Pearson's...less than memorable outings this year. What going on with the 24-year-old hurler's stuff? Why aren't his commendable Minor League outings translating to the pros? Is it psychological? Could he be DFA'd again? On the topic of underwhelming pitching performances, Anthony Kay continues to struggle. Drew and Jonah channel their Brandon Flowers and go all 'Mr. Brightside' on us, praising both Marcus Semien and Bo Bichette's offensive production. Do you hear that? It's the sound of a world without Jays' radio broadcasts. | Welcome to Spin Rate, your new Blue Jays podcast | 18 Feb 2021 | 01:10:02
Welcome to The Athletic's Toronto Blue Jays podcast, Spin Rate, with Drew Fairservice and The Atheltic's Blue Jays scribe, Kaitlyn McGrath. First off, we're glad you're tuning in, secondly, before getting into the juicy stuff, Drew and Kaitlyn update us on what they've been doing since the end of the season, and address the direction of the show. OK, now for the saucy stuff. Geroge Springer, what does he bring to Toronto? How promising is the outfield, plus, the front office is demonstrating a willingness to spend money, so what's next? The two also converse about Marcus Semien's 2020 and his fit in the infield. Is 2B prime real estate for Semien, or is there enough concern for Bo Bichette at SS that it could force Semien into the gap? What about 3B? Kaitlyn reveals, arguably, her favorite signing of the offseason before the duo discusses Toronto's rotation. Kaitlyn humble brags about how smart she is which sets the table for her rotation grades. (Is a 'B' really that generous?) Let's talk about Robbie Ray and Jake Odorizzi. Lastly, where will the club play this seas...oh, well, we're finding out mid-recording that it's in Dunedin to kick off the season. Nice! We look forward to you joining us on Spin Rate, and can't wait for this season to begin!

Well, at least Blue Bird fans can look forward to next season...maybe. Having a nest full of topics to cover, Drew and Stoeten invite Sportsnet columnist, author, jovial whale neighbor and now podcast guest, Stephen Brunt, to today's show to unpack an eventful season in Toronto (and Major League Baseball in general -- 4:00). Will any of these wacky, frustrating, fun, insert adjective to describe what emotion it evokes in you, rules carry into future years? What can fans expect from Shapiro and the front office in relation to team building and the free agent market? What decisions need to be made in order to improve Toronto's defense? Is Bo Bichette big-league caliber shortstop? How will the team handle that position moving forward? Does the Blue Jays' style of play mesh with what we've seen this year? | Rays Report & Let's Go Exorcise Some Demons! + Answering Your Biggest Blue Jays Playoff Questions | 29 Sep 2020 | 00:54:13
Burn the sage, it's time to cleanse Toronto of these demons of playoffs (and Rays) past. Drew and Stoeten forecast the Jays' series against Tampa Bay (:30). What's there really to fear from the No. 1 overall seed in the American League? Is it realistic the Blue Birds actually win this series? The stunning, though, probably expected development of Matt Shoemaker starting game one engenders further thinking, like, why is Shoemaker starting the opening game of the series (9:15)? What is the most effective way to manage the bullpen in his start? Could we see Nate Pearson in relief? The guys entertain and answer some of your Blue Jays-postseason questions (21:15), including: Will Charlie Montoyo's perceivable future with Toronto be affected by the outcome of this series; are our brains goop for the Brain Bug from Starship Troopers to eat, or are we right to question why Hyun-jin Ryu is starting game two (28:00); how can we expect defensive replacements to look this series (33:45) and how will this postseason impact the Blue Jays' off-season (39:15)?

Merry Clinch-mas! What a wonderous and fulfilling feeling! Who better to celebrate Toronto's postseason berth with than Drew, Ol' Reliable and Sportsnet contributor, Tao of Stieb?! The talking Toronto triumvirate react to the Blue Jays...umm...not so much valiantly battling their way into extra baseball so much as falling into the 8th seed (4:00). Having secured a spot, and a week before butting heads with the AL's head honcho, is this a good time to allow guys to recover or get some low-stress reps (8:00)? Let's rosterbate. How will the blue birds build out their roster for, presumably, the Rays (16:00)? So lemme ask you this, do you consider this year a success (22:30)? What comes next, and wouldn't it feel good to embarrass the Rays (36:00)? Will Shapiro sharpen his proverbial cleaver and sever the puppet strings attached to Montoyo (41:30)? | Tumbling Toronto, Fisher's Flubs, Expanded Playoffs to Stay & Final Stretch Expectations with Kaitlyn McGrath | 17 Sep 2020 | 00:57:38
The Jays are a playoff team in the same way playoff teams are lifeless scarecrows constantly being pecked, soaked, beaten and being forced to watch actual good teams play baseball while trying to keep a smile. Drew, Stoeten and The Athletic's Blue Jays beat writer Kaitlyn McGrath pursue the truth...well...the relative truth; are the Blue Jays a playoff caliber team (:30)? What perspectives can these Jays journos present amid epic beatings? Derek Fisher...ugh (20:30). If MLB's expanded playoff format is here to stay, how do we feel about 16 teams vying for a pennant after 162 (28:00)? How does this adversely effect players? Magic number: 9. Standing far too close for his liking to a lone burning trashcan with the word "Yankees" crudely scrawled on it is New York Daily News sports columnist and co-host of Baseball Prospectus' "Five and Dive" podcast, Bradford Davis, who joins Drew and Ol'Reliable on today's show (4:15). So...umm...Brad...what's up with the Pinstripe's meltdown? After Brad astutely describes the Yankees' turmoil, the group chats about how anyone who's anyone in the AL postseason, won't want to touch New York with a 10-and-a-half-foot pole in a three-game series (10:00). Seeing as New York is two (one and a half?) horse town, the triumvirate talk Mets baseball, including their glowing weaknesses, Jacob deGrom, improved bullpen and more (13:30). Contiguous, but still Mets related, is Marcus Stroman. Where does his future lie and will the Mets try to retain him (23:45)? Lastly, Brad spoke with Charlie Montoyo regarding Roberto Clemente Day; the Hall of Famers' lasting impact and how minorities can help create a constructive dialogue about furthering racial equality (33:00). | Blue Jays Base Running Blunders & Opening the BAD Mailbag! | 04 Sep 2020 | 00:59:49
There's few more qualified than the seasoned, grizzled Blue Jays podcast vets, Drew and Ol' Reliable, to fully convey the pang felt from watching the Jays' suspect base running (5:15). Chiefly, why is the team's base running so...so...bafflingly disappointing, and though fans take issue with the blunders, a fraction of a fraction are repulsed by players trying to make plays (10:15). Jays enthusiasts, rightfully, take issue with these shortcomings, but why is it they must labor through these mistakes (17:15)? Drew and (And)rew unseal hand-written (virtual) letters from listeners (24:30)! And, amazingly, all include thoughtful questions about the Blue Jays. Go figure. There's potential this novel idea is used, habitually, throughout the sports media landscape. Spread the word! Anyways, Jonathan Villar an upgrade at third base over Travis Shaw? Should the team consider welcoming back Justin Smoak (29:30)? (Note: This isn't a pithy or facetious question.) Is it time we quit chastising the Jays for every little flaw, and, instead, enjoy empty September baseball (32:15)? Does this whole condensed season thing count (35:15)? Would the club consider hanging a banner in the Rogers Centre rafters if they make the postseason? The guys have access to a time machine, right, and of all the crazy, wacky, time distorting things they could do; would they redo the Josh Donaldson trade (41:15)? Is it time Alejandro Kirk joins the team (42:30)? Lastly, Drew and Ol' Reliable take a stab at configuring Toronto's rotation in a three-game series (50:15).

| Tackling Toronto's Transactions: How These Moves Improve the Club & Front Office, Atkins' Approach | 01 Sep 2020 | 01:07:38 | |
On a day consumed by trades, it's easy to lose focus on what truly matters (:30). Please make sure we keep the dialogue open and flowing. Drew and Ol' Reliable talk about what they always talk about, your Toronto Blue Ja...wait...what...oh, sorry, I meant the playoff contenting Toronto Blue Jays (5:15). Is it conceivable that this club, with their recent additions in mind, will make the postseason? Before losing ourselves to delusions of grandeur, let's remain rooted in reality for a bit and discuss the club's series of trades; beginning with the Taijuan Walker acquisition (9:30). Could Jonathan Villar's change of scenery be to the boon of Toronto? Specifically, when it comes to aggressive base running (17:00)? Why did the Jays trade for Daniel Vogelbach (27:30)? Is there a chance the squad's "buy-low" mindset in bagging Ross Stripling and Robbie Ray will pay off (36:45)? When he's not padding his 5-to-1 kill-death ratio in Call of Duty, Zubes is busy building the Sportsfeld media empire...and joining Drew and Ol' Reliable to talk all things Blue Jays. Speaking of Blue Jays, why are they performing so woefully? (I mean, aside from the obvious. - 6:00) The trio target an overarching issue this season: the plodding pace of play (12:30). What enhancements can be made to correct the sluggishness, and why is the game in this laggard state anyways? What do we say to the unwritten rules??? Well, listen to find out, silly (20:15). Losing Bo Bichette blows, and, what's worse, Brandon Drury and Joe Panik have been disappointing to say the least (24:45). Nate Pearson was recently added to the injured list because of an elbow injury, could his respite from hurling baseballs really, really fast prove beneficial (33:00)? | The Good, the Bad & the Ugly: Blue Jays' Mixed Bag in Buffalo with Kaitlyn McGrath | 14 Aug 2020 | 01:13:57
As the title of this episode would suggest, Drew, Ol' Reliable and, possibly, someone even more reliable than Ol' Reliable, The Athletic's Blue Jays beat reporter, Kaitlyn McGrath, examine the good, the bad and the, at times, very ugly of the Blue Jays start in Buffalo. But! Before then, the trio wield their words adeptly and fasten details together to create a vivid image of a welcoming Sahlen Park, furnished to properly accommodate the Jays (2:30). From Kaitlyn's perspective, is there a difference covering the games at Sahlen Park from home (8:45)? The flock flies towards Toronto's seemingly good feats as of late, including Jordan Romano and the 'pen (16:00). What positives has Kaitlyn been able to identify (18:45)? Getting into the not so good, re: bad: Nate Pearson, though bright and brimming with potential, has fumbled through his last couple starts (27:15), and Vlad Guerrero Jr. absolutely, unequivocally, needs to begin producing offensively (40:15). As for the ugly, in a normal season, would the Jays consider, if not enact, demoting Guerrero Jr. in order for him to reestablish himself (53:30)? Guess what? It's time for another where-do-we-stand-on-Charlie-Montoyo update (1:00:15)! Two things about Stoeten: 1) He's old and reliable and 2) if he offers you a hamburger, politely decline. You've been warned. Drew (And)rew welcome ProPlayAI chief scientist, Dr. Mike Sonne, to today's show (5:00). The scholarly Dr. Sonne details ProPlayAI's technology and how pitchers like Nate Pearson are using these programs to further their understanding of biomechanics. In what ways are biomechanics/ProPlayAI being utilized to help Pearson and other users (7:30)? Does Pearson's cerebral, thoughtful approach to his craft help him better understand the benefits of sound biomechanics (12:30)? How does player health factor in when analyzing data (15:00)? Will players employing the use of ProPlayAI's understanding of biomechanics, open the door for athletes who we may not have originally thought of as having a chance (18:15)? Which player does Mike believe could benefit from improved biomechanics (22:00)? Drew and Andrew bid farewell to Mike and recap Toronto and Nate Pearson's performances against Atlanta (25:30). Could Pearson benefit from a seasoned catcher? Potentially a guy who's worn a Jays jersey at one point (33:30)? Is Toronto's bullpen the surprise standout for the club so far this season (37:30)?
