Here’s How to Build Collagen the Smart Way05 Nov 202500:17:30

Send us Fan Mail

Speaking of Women's Health Podcast Host Dr. Holly Thacker unpacks what collagen actually is, why production slows with age and menopause, and how to protect and build it with food and daily habits. She weighs the evidence on collagen supplements, shares safety guardrails, and lays out a practical plan for skin, joints, and bones.

Dr. Thacker starts with the big levers: why smoking, alcohol, sugar, and UV exposure damage collagen, and how simple shifts—SPF on chronically exposed skin, smarter sun for vitamin D, and a realistic supplement plan after age 40—help you age slower.

Then she moves to the plate. Dr. Thacker lists the collagen-rich foods like bone broth, chicken skin, and fish skin, plus the nutrients that actually drive collagen synthesis: complete protein, vitamin C, zinc, and copper.

Curious about powders and peptides? Dr. Thacker dives into when and how to choose safe supplement products.

If this conversation helps you think differently about your routine, tap follow, share it with a friend who’s collagen-curious, and leave a quick review so more listeners can find us. The Silent Threat: Understanding Ovarian Cancer02 Sep 202500:31:25

Send us Fan Mail

Ovarian cancer, the second most common gynecologic malignancy, can be cured 90-95% of the time when caught early.

Speaking of Women's Health Podcast Host talks through the risk factors like family history, BRCA gene mutations, obesity, and personal reproductive factors that are essential for early detection and prevention.

• Risk increases with age (over 50), family history, and BRCA gene mutations
• BRCA1 carriers face 35-70% lifetime risk compared to less than 2% in general population
• Pregnancy, breastfeeding, and hormonal contraceptives reduce risk by decreasing ovulation
• Tubal ligation, especially salpingectomy, dramatically lowers ovarian cancer risk
• Common symptoms include abdominal swelling, urinary changes, bloating, early satiety
• Regular pelvic exams and prompt reporting of symptoms are crucial for early detection
• Ashkenazi Jewish women have ten times higher rate of BRCA mutations
• Avoid using talcum powder near genital area as it's been linked to increased risk
• Consider genetic counseling if strong family history exists
• Prophylactic removal of tubes/ovaries after age 40 may be recommended for high-risk women

Preserving Your Cognitive Health As You Age13 Aug 202500:39:44

Send us Fan Mail

The battle against cognitive decline begins long before memory problems appear. Dr. Holly Thacker delivers a fascinating deep dive into the nutrients and supplements proven to protect your brain as you age, with startling revelations about how women's brains age differently than men's.

At the heart of this episode is a treasure trove of practical knowledge about brain-protective nutrients. A newly available over-the-counter supplement called CerefolinNAC Brain Wellness (formerly prescription-only) combines active folate, methylated B12, and NAC to support brain health.

Perhaps most fascinating is the discussion of magnesium's profound impact on brain volume – particularly in women. Despite its vital role in over 300 enzymatic systems, nearly half of Americans consume insufficient amounts.

Beyond supplements, Dr. Thacker emphasizes the critical role of physical activity, social engagement, and cognitive challenges in maintaining brain health. For anyone concerned about maintaining mental sharpness through midlife and beyond, this episode provides the roadmap you've been searching for.

The MIND Diet & MTHFR - How They Play Key Roles In Physical and Mental Health08 Sep 202300:42:19

Send us Fan Mail

The MIND diet (Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay) is a combination of two well-studied dietary approaches - the Mediterranean diet and DASH (Dietary Approach to Stop Hypertension) - with some modifications.

Researchers found those who followed the MIND diet had a 53% reduced risk of developing Alzheimer's disease and those who moderately followed the diet had a 35% reduced risk.

Methyl TetraHydroFolate Reductase (MTHFR) is a gene that produces an essential enzyme in the body. MTHFR plays a key role with regard to many aspects of physical and mental health.

Humans contain two copies of each gene, one from the father and one from the mother, which are referred to as the alleles of a gene. One allele mutation, which occurs in 50% of the population makes it more likely that you will have migraine headaches or other low serotonin medical problems like:

  • depression
  • irritable bowel
  • fibromyalgia

Host Holly L. Thacker, MD discusses how to put the MIND Diet in action and how to treat MTHFR.
