Ep #177: Trust & Sabbatical13 Feb 202300:25:53

Showing up and sharing your voice can be scary. It takes courage and trust.

I've been researching the ways and layers of trust and have found it to be really helpful to see all the ways trust serves - and lack of trust can hurt - our impact and leadership.

In this episode, I explore three layers of trust and how they have been a part of my own journey of leadership. From trusting myself, to trusting others, to seeing that there is something much bigger than me that is infinitely trustworthy - these insights have been profound for my own growth.

You'll also hear about a decision that trusting myself has inspired me to make - and why I'm doing it right now.

Specifically, you'll hear about:

  • How I know the difference between when I'm trusting myself and when I'm not
  • The time I transferred all of my trust to others, in a way that doesn't really work, and what I learned from that
  • What my daughter learning to drive has to do with trust - and why it can help you see where you are already trusting beautifully
  • Where trusting others to do what they promise allows us to do more powerful work in the world (and when to not trust others because it gets in the way of our best work)
  • Why being a pilot or co-pilot of your life may not be the only, or even the best, options
  • How trust serves me in making decisions about taking breaks and recalibrating in my business

I hope this episode serves you in releasing and letting go so you can have the spaciousness, confidence and support to do your very best work in our world.

Ep #176: How to Make Boring Content Interesting06 Feb 202300:23:07

In the presentation skills training I facilitate, I'm often asked the question: What do I do if my content is just boring?

The truth is, your content can't be boring or no one will pay attention - it's just the facts.

The good news is - there is no inherently boring content! There is only content that hasn't been crafted in a way that engages that particular audience.

This applies to presentations as well as emails, conversations with clients, business partners and your kids or parents as well.

I created this episode to help you take any content and make it way more interesting.

Specifically, you'll learn:

  • The first and most important thing you must do to craft content that will engage any audience (it's magical, really)
  • What working in the insurance industry taught me about creating engaging content
  • Why stories are important, no matter what your topic - and how to choose ones that work
  • How to approach your content with the right intention so the audience or person walks away with their needs met
  • Ways to narrow and focus your content to meet the needs of the audience or the person you are speaking with

I hope this episode helps you brighten up and focus your content in a way that lights up your audience, whether that's one person or a whole auditorium full of people.

Ep # 167: Creating Your Story Garden05 Dec 202200:25:40

The moment you need a story - in crafting a speech, a current conversation, writing your book, for example - is the hardest moment to come up with a great story.

Knowing that story is a compelling way to bring a concept to life, to draw in attention or to make your content even more memorable, you'll want to have a rich treasure chest of story at the ready.

This is where your story garden comes in!

There are ways to invite your brain to bring forth stories from your past or stories you've heard from others with abundance. When you do it as a creative exercise, there is very little pressure to get in the way of free flowing ideas. I created this episode so you'll know exactly how to create your story garden so it's ready for your next public speaking, book writing or important conversion experience.

When you listen, you'll learn:

  • Why I call this your Story Garden and how it helps you to bring forth better stories
  • The reason unexpected stories captivate attention so well
  • How to use three simple prompts to help your brain reveal great stories
  • The materials you'll need to created a story garden
  • What to do if you start thinking of stories that are unrelated to your prompt
  • Why creating your story garden when you aren't under pressure will make using your stories so much more fun and powerful
  • How I started a storytelling circle on a whim and why it changed my life

Story gardens are so fun! You can see pictures of some of my story gardens on my Instagram at Instagram.com/MichelleBarryFranco.I'd love to see yours. Tag me on Instagram and share a picture of it!

Ep #77: Surrendered Speaking27 Nov 201900:24:23

The tech didn't work for Steve Job's 2007 iPhone launch. Chris Brogan once forgot his notes for a $25,000 talk. My client's slides wouldn't work when she went to speak. It's a given that sometimes in the life of the speaker tech failures and mishaps will happen. In this episode, I'm sharing about the magic that can happen when we learn to stick through the discomfort, release into it and trust what's next. (Hint: This is when some of our best speaking and expression shows up.)

In this episode, I share the four things I do when those nervous feelings show up in my body before I'm about to speak. I hope they give you a new window into speaking freedom too!

In this week's episode, I talk about dropping the mask when you're presenting and how to be even more yourself while inspiring, teaching and captivating your audience.   Get full show notes and more information here: http://michellebarryfranco.com/episode73

Ep #166: How to Tap Your Full Freedom Expression28 Nov 202200:27:54

When you know you are called to use your voice, expertise, and message to serve in our world, that desire can burn strong, even hot at times. It's not just about saying the thing, telling the story… it's about feeling fully expressed when you do it.

And yet, especially for women and others who are marginalized in power in our society, we are taught all the ways we should be careful, stay smaller, and not make other people uncomfortable when we speak on stages, share our message on podcast guest interviews, write your book... This continuous uninvited training can be so stealthy that we don't even realize all the ways it is holding us back from feeling the rich satisfaction of our fullest expression.

In this episode, you'll see the ways you might be holding back, even when you don't mean to, and take away strategies for releasing the fear (and thought storms) that can keep you from showing up in your most glorious, full expression.

When you listen, you'll learn:

  • Specific examples of surrendered expression compared to the careful expression we are taught to share
  • How to connect with your body in order to recognize when you are constricted - and how to tap the feelings of full expression too
  • Questions to ask yourself to help you understand your full expression more completely
  • The impact of "state of mind" on performance - and how to not let it stop you from expressing yourself anyway
  • Ways to remember that Infinite Potential is available to you always
  • Where full expression interplays with spirituality - and why you don't have to be "spiritual" in order to be fully expressed (it'll happen anyway - you are MADE of this)

I hope this episode serves you and your beautiful voice powerfully.

Ep #164: Burnout & Taking a Sabbatical with Joanna Denton14 Nov 202200:44:33

It feels amazing to be in the flow of doing great work. Sometimes it's hard to stop - to step away long enough to have a proper meal or get a full night's sleep. And for short bursts of time, this can be just fine, if it doesn't happen too often.

When you spend too much time working, especially under a great deal of stress, it can be hurtful to your mental and physical health.

The fact that our society inappropriately values hustle and overworking means burnout is way more common that we might realize. No one teaches us how to recognize when burnout is happening, so it can actually become a part of the culture of an organization.

It would be great if leaving a toxic culture to start our own business meant an immediate end to overworking and burnout, but that is often not the case. Habits and beliefs that build up over time are hard to recognize and release, even when they feel terrible.

In this interview with Joanna Denton, Executive & Speaking Coach, we get to hear Joanna's story of burnout - two times - during her career. Along the way, Joanna learned a lot about how to recognize the signs of burnout as well as things you can do to take care of yourself when you notice these signs.

Inside, you'll hear about:

  • Some of the possible shadow side of creating a successful career
  • What burnout means - and how to recognize the signs
  • How Joanna experienced not one, but two, burnouts in her corporate career
  • Why starting your own business is not the answer (in itself) to stopping burnout
  • Joanna's upcoming sabbatical - and how I've taken a few of them in my business, too
  • The reason that writing a book, delivering a TED talk (Joanna has done) doesn't guarantee success or ease in your business, thought leadership or life (and what they DO give and teach you)
  • Ideas for rest and nourishment for your journey as a business leader

Joanna is vulnerable and real, funny and super smart. I hope you love this conversation as much as we enjoyed creating it for you.

Joanna's Bio:

Joanna trained as a coach in 2015, and after working first in an in-house role for her then employer, she started her own business in October 2016, working for clients all around the world and in different industries and organisations.   Prior to that, Joanna worked as a tax consultant for 16 years in Big 4 accounting firms in both the UK and Luxembourg, working up to the level of Director in 2010.  Two burnouts in five years made her fall out of love with her well-established tax career, even though on the face of it she was at the top of her game. In 2014, after burnout number 2, she left tax, became a coach, and changed pretty much everything about how she lives her life. Since then, it has become her mission to make sure that her clients don't wait till their lives are falling apart to make changes in their lives; she helps her clients continue doing what they love, AND do it in a way that they can still have the energy to have a life outside work with the ones they care about.

Ep #43: The Message You Came to Share & Sabbatical27 Feb 201900:12:19

In this week's episode, I talk about why it can be difficult to determine what our message is, even though we know it's inside of us. I've also got an announcement: I'm taking a sabbatical from the podcast. I still love podcasting as a medium, and I know I'll be back. But it's time for me to make some space to get in touch with my own message and find the best way to share it with you.

Ep #40: Who Are You to Call Yourself a Thought Leader?06 Feb 201900:17:01

I want to take a somewhat controversial stance in favor of the term "thought leader." In this episode, I break down the term and talk about why I think it's the best possible description of what so many of us want to do in our work: Make the biggest difference possible and change lives for the better.

Ep #163: Kris McGuigan on Being Courageous & Real in Her Book & Speaking07 Nov 202200:37:12

There is a difference between being an expert speaker and a transformational speaker. They aren't mutually exclusive - some of our most influential thought leaders show up in both capacities.

Kris McGuigan knows how to weave expertise and transformation together with mastery, and that's a real gift. She's the perfect person to listen to and learn from about making your way in the speaking and thought leadership world with authenticity and commitment.

When I met Kris just under five years ago, she was committed to serving from bigger and broader reaching stages but was early on that path. In fact, she flew to my state so we could spend a full day together crafting her first well-paid speech.

The path wasn't easy or straight-forward all the time, but Kris stuck it out and her commitment paid off. She is now speaking on amazing stages regularly and has just published her first (of many, I'm sure) book.

Kris' story and insights are powerful because she knows what it takes to become a well known thought leader, starting from the beginning. But what makes listening to Kris and learning from her even more powerful is the way she brings genuine and honest humanity to the process, and to the world of work.

This is a book about professional courage, a gift to people in companies and organizations who want to rise to their own greatness… and it's a beautiful guide to living a courageous, brave life.

In this episode, we talk about:

  • The difference between the way we picture getting onto great stages - and what it really takes to get there
  • The small step processes Kris engaged to practice telling her more real and raw stories before she put them into her book. Courage in systematic action.
  • When Kris noticed she wasn't ready to be a transformational speaker and how her speaking evolved so that eventually it felt like the only thing she wants to do.
  • The meaningful distinction between workshop speaking and keynote speaking
  • How fear can be fuel for doing great things - and where courage comes in
  • What Courage in Action means for your impact in the world - whether it's career change, life change or stepping into thought leadership

You're going to love Kris McGuigan's book, The Requisite Courage: How to Make Brave Decisions in Business and Life. It's captivating, engaging and actionable.

Kris McGuigan is the founder and principal owner of Professional Courage. As a board-certified, executive coach, keynote speaker and corporate trainer for the nation's most prominent Fortune 500 companies, Kris has helped countless leaders step up and stand out in the marketplace. Her first book, The Requisite Courage: How to Make Brave Decisions in Business & Life, is a science-based approach to fear management that helps you overcome self-doubt, take more risks and get results.
