Exploring the Benefits and Risks of Cold Exposure: From Icy Plunges to Chilly Showers26 Sep 202500:10:29

Stepping into discomfort might just be the pathway to greater strength, clarity, and wellbeing. This episode dives deep into the increasingly popular world of cold therapy, exploring everything from accessible cold showers to high-tech cryotherapy chambers.

We begin with some personal news about shifting the podcast to a Friday-only schedule, allowing for more thoughtful content creation while maintaining balance. Then we explore the fascinating world of cold exposure and its surprising benefits. Whether you're an athlete looking to speed recovery, someone seeking better sleep, or simply curious about building mental toughness, cold therapy offers something valuable.

The episode breaks down different cold therapy methods, from the beginner-friendly 30-second cold shower to more intensive ice baths favored by professional athletes. We examine the science behind why cold exposure reduces inflammation, improves circulation, enhances mental clarity, and potentially helps regulate sleep patterns. Most importantly, we address the crucial safety considerations everyone should know before diving in—including who should avoid cold therapy and how to start safely without expensive equipment.

Cold therapy represents a perfect intersection of physical wellness and mental resilience training. That brief moment of discomfort might translate into greater mental toughness that serves you in countless other life challenges. Have you tried cold therapy or are you considering it? Share your experience or questions at info@spandexandwine.com or text 913-392-2877. Until next time, pour something in your glass that makes you happy!

Program Design: Your Roadmap to Fitness Success23 Sep 202500:04:59

Ever found yourself wandering aimlessly around the gym, uncertain what to do next? You're not alone. That feeling of gym confusion is exactly what I address in this candid conversation about the transformative power of program design.

Program design sits at that sweet spot between freestyle workouts and full personal training. It's perfect for self-motivated individuals who don't necessarily need constant supervision but would benefit tremendously from having a structured roadmap. As a fitness professional, creating personalized workout plans is one of the most rewarding aspects of my job—seeing clients confidently execute programs specifically built for their needs and watching their progression over time.

The benefits extend far beyond just knowing what exercises to do. With a properly designed program, you'll experience balanced muscle development instead of unconsciously favoring certain muscle groups. Built-in progression prevents those frustrating plateaus. Your gym time becomes remarkably more efficient. Perhaps most importantly, injury prevention is woven throughout, with exercises chosen to support rather than stress your body. There's also something powerful about the confidence that comes from knowing your workout has purpose and direction.

Whether you're new to fitness, feeling stuck in your current routine, or looking to reach new performance heights, a customized program might be exactly what you need. It provides the structure to move forward with confidence and the flexibility to adapt as you grow stronger. Remember today's affirmation: "I achieve my goals by taking clear, consistent action." A well-designed program makes that consistent action much easier to maintain. Reach out if you'd like to discuss how a personalized fitness program could transform your journey!

Finding Balance in Life's Chaotic Seasons22 Aug 202500:07:40

Ever feel like you're juggling too many balls at once? You're not alone. In this raw and candid conversation, I open up about my current struggle with balance while navigating a new job alongside managing my fitness studio, recording this podcast, and showing up for clients. The truth? My balance is completely out of whack right now.

We often picture balance as this perfect, calm state where everything fits neatly into place. But that's not reality. Balance isn't about perfection—it's about going with the flow and trusting that even when life feels wobbly, it's temporary. For control freaks like me, this is particularly challenging! Seasons of change inevitably bring chaos before clarity, and that's exactly where I find myself.

Rather than fighting against this imbalance, I've discovered unexpected joy in becoming a student again. As a fitness trainer, I spend significant mental energy planning workouts for others. But recently, I've been walking into classes and simply following along—no planning, no responsibility—just moving and enjoying the ride. This mental break has been transformative, allowing me to get lost in the moment while still maintaining my morning and evening rituals that keep me grounded.

If you're feeling overwhelmed or stretched thin, perhaps this is your sign to find spaces where you can simply show up and let someone else guide you. Whether it's yoga, strength training, or dance, allow yourself to be the student. Let go of the need to plan or be perfect. Just move and enjoy the experience. After all, sometimes the most balanced thing we can do is acknowledge the imbalance and give ourselves permission to be messy.

Pour something in your glass that makes you happy and remember: perfection isn't the goal—progress and presence are. I'd love to hear what topics and guests you'd like featured on future episodes! Reach out anytime at info@spandexandwine.com or text me at 913-392-2877.

Mom of Special Needs Twin Boys, Blogger, Podcaster & Retreat Host w/ Becca Ingersoll13 Sep 202400:33:37

Last summer I took an online course with Cathy Heller, host of the Abundant Ever After Podcast, to start my own podcast. I can’t begin to tell you how much I learned and made many wonderful friends. Within that group, we were assigned “podmates” to encourage each other, brainstorm and for accountability. That group has meant the world to me. They have become people I rely on and look forward to chatting with weekly. We took a break over the summer from our calls but I know we will get them going again soon. Becca Ingersoll is in my group we fondly refer to as Pod 30 (clever name because on the spreadsheet we were assigned we were group 30…haha creative geniuses at work there) and is today’s guest. She is a mom of twin boys with special needs, a writer & blogger, podcaster and retreat host. She is such a positive, caring, giving, incredible woman that I am blessed to call my friend.

Take a listen to hear her talk about her life's work helping women identify their life passions to help them live a more fulfilled life!

More about Sandy from her web site: The Well Aligned: Helping women get curious about their life passions

"Hello, my name is Sandy, and I'm a career + mindset coach.

My story began 20+ years ago working in the natural products industry. I bounced around between brands in natural products and wellness gradually working my way up the ladder into managerial positions. I love the fast pace of the industry and working in sales; however, I knew that I had much more to contribute. My true passion has always been mentoring and guiding people in the industries I love! Natural products have become how I Iive, healthy cooking and an active lifestyle. I always incorporate a healthy modality or wellness routine into my life daily.

This brings me to today, I decided to launch my career coaching business for women who wish to transition from mid-life jobs that no longer serve who they are into their soul-driven careers."

Your Body Is a Partner, Not a Project19 Aug 202500:08:32

Remember when you started a workout because you ate that cookie? Or stepped on the scale and let that number ruin your perfectly good day? It's time we talked about breaking free from this cycle of shame.

Shifting from punishment-based workouts to joyful movement is a game-changer, especially for women in our 40s, 50s, and beyond. We've spent decades believing exercise was something we did because we weren't good enough—a consequence rather than a celebration. But what if movement became an act of love instead?

This episode explores how finding physical activities that genuinely excite you transforms your relationship with fitness. Whether it's dancing with abandon, walking with friends, or lifting weights to feel powerful (not to earn your dinner), joyful movement helps your body feel like a partner rather than a project.

We also tackle our complicated relationship with the scale—that small device that somehow holds immense power over our self-worth. The truth? That number doesn't measure strength, energy, happiness, improved sleep, reduced inflammation, or any of the meaningful ways your body serves you daily. When we focus on consistency and how we feel rather than arbitrary numbers, real, lasting results follow.

Your body deserves kindness, not constant criticism. Move because it feels good. Rest when you need to. And remember that being a work in progress is exactly where you should be. Text me at 913-392-2877 or email info@spandexandwine.com if you need support finding your groove again. And please, if this message resonates, share it with someone who needs to hear it today.

Alex Olson works with students with visual impairments and their families to provide supports and services to ensure they have access to education/therapy. Wine wise, she used to work at a wine shop in her home state of Florida! And used to do wine tours/wine pairings on a sail boat. She enjoys wine, but definitely in moderation.

How Vulnerability Leads to Freedom w/ Alenda Jacobson15 Aug 202500:41:33

What does it really take to heal from profound childhood trauma? Alenda Jacobson's story offers a raw, unflinching look at this journey as she shares her experience of sexual abuse from birth to age seven and the chaotic family environment that shaped her early life.

With remarkable openness, Alenda reveals how trauma taught her to constantly scan for danger, prioritize others' needs above her own, and develop an almost supernatural empathy as a survival mechanism. "I was very tuned in to everything going on around me because I was trying to predict next moves," she explains. "I couldn't feel safe if I couldn't feel other people's emotions." This hypervigilance came at a steep cost, disconnecting her from her own needs and creating patterns that followed her into adulthood.

The turning point in Alenda's healing journey came not during therapy, but after it ended. Walking away from a session feeling unsatisfied, something shifted—she realized there had to be more to healing than what she'd experienced. This awakening led her to embrace practices she'd previously dismissed and to question long-held beliefs. Most importantly, she learned that healing requires feeling: "You have to feel your feelings and they're not going to go away until you sit with them and stop being afraid of them."

What makes this conversation truly special is Alenda's profound wisdom about self-love. "Unfortunately, you're not going to find healing where you were hurt," she shares, "which means you have to do the hardest thing you've ever done—learn to be in love with yourself." Her journey reminds us that while others can support our healing, ultimately we must become our own healers and "the hero to our own story."

Have you experienced trauma that still affects your life? Listen to this episode for compassionate insights from someone who's walking the path of healing. Text me at 913-392-2877 or email info@spandexandwine.com to share your thoughts or connect with Alinda.

So, you might be thinking, what exactly is CBD and how does it work?

• CBD is one of the fastest growing and most talked about health and wellness products on the market today because it offers a natural solution for so many health concerns.

• CBD, also known as Hemp Flower Extract has extremely low levels of THC, .03% or less. The low levels of THC supports safe use of CBD daily without any psychoactive properties.

• CBD is a chemical compound found in the cannabis plant with properties that can aid in reducing anxiousness, pain, inflammation and so much more.

• CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid system or ECS, which is made up of a series of receptors located throughout our body. Discovered only in the 90's, these receptors can help assist in the management of pain, stress, sleep, regulate appetite and improve motor and neurological function.

• When taken daily, CBD boosts our natural endocannabinoid system, which results in increasing balance within the body and mind.

This video talks about CBD and the potential of the industry: https://vimeo.com/499905713

So why is Green Compass the trusted leader in Hemp-Based Wellness?

• Our hemp is grown in USDA Certified Organic fields, which means they are free of heavy metals and no chemical herbicide or pesticide is used.

• We are vertically integrated, which means, the company owns and controls each part of the planting, harvesting, innovation, manufacturing, and fulfillment processes.

• We use small batch CO2 extraction to separate the beneficial compounds from the plant. It takes more time but produces a higher quality hemp oil.

• Our lab conforms to the GLP/GMP standards and uses efficient processes without degradation of beneficial compounds so that the product quality is as high as possible.

• We utilize stringent independent third-party lab testing to ensure efficacy and safety.

• And, every product is backed by a no-risk, 30-day money-back guarantee.

Breaking the Cycle of Negative Thoughts: How Your Inner Dialogue Shapes Your Health12 Aug 202500:06:42

What if the most powerful wellness tool isn't in your kitchen or gym bag, but between your ears? Dive into the fascinating science of how our thoughts shape our physical health and wellbeing.

The numbers are shocking: we have up to 60,000 thoughts daily, with a staggering 80% being negative and 95% repetitive. That's right—we're not just thinking negative thoughts; we're thinking the same negative thoughts on repeat like a broken record. This mental pattern doesn't just stay in our heads—it shows up in our bodies, with the CDC reporting that up to 90% of doctor visits stem from stress-related issues. From high blood pressure to weakened immunity, that internal dialogue is literally making us sick.

But here's the empowering part: you can rewrite this story. This episode offers practical, science-backed strategies for breaking the negative thought cycle without falling into toxic positivity. Learn how to replace disempowering thoughts with strengthening ones, how to acknowledge negative thoughts without letting them "set up camp," and why treating your mind like valuable real estate (not a trash bin) might be the healthiest choice you make today.

Whether you're feeling overwhelmed by negative self-talk or simply want to optimize your mental wellness routine, this episode provides the perfect blend of motivation and actionable steps. Ready to transform your thoughts and, by extension, your health? Pour something in your glass that makes you happy, and let's talk about making your inner dialogue work for you, not against you. Your body—and your wine glass—will thank you for it.

From A Young Girl Tracking the Weather to Forecasting & Fitness w/ Karli Ritter07 May 202400:19:38

Vote for me as Ms Health & Fitness 2024!!! Click here

Karli Ritter is Kansas City's best meteorologist and is today's podcast guest!!

From the Fox4KC web site:
Karli Ritter joined FOX4 in March of 2007 and forecasts for FOX4 News from 6:30-10 a.m.

Karli’s passion for weather started at a young age while she was growing up in central Florida. In between the afternoon thunderstorms, she would often track every hurricane in the Atlantic Ocean on her own personal tracking map. Then she saw a waterspout in the Florida Keys and she was hooked!

Her passion led her from central Florida to the panhandle, where she studied at Florida State University. While there, she earned a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Meteorology. During her time at FSU, her involvement with a student-run weather show started her on the path to becoming a television meteorologist. After graduation, she worked in Sarasota, Fla, and Montgomery, Ala.

Since moving to Kansas City, Karli has become involved with many charities around town and loves serving as emcee at their fundraisers. She also earned her Certified Broadcast Meteorologist seal in November 2007 from the American Meteorological Society.

When she’s not in the FOX4 Weather Center, Karli enjoys traveling, cooking, and playing or watching any sport.

Massage Therapy, Energy Work and Being Vulnerable w/ Marcus Lewis19 Apr 202400:30:12

Marcus Lewis is a Massage Therapist with a gift like no one I have ever known. He is empathetic, compassionate, giving, loving & nurturing! I hope you enjoy the conversation I had with him about his services, energy work and being vulnerable.

Marcus Lewis
913-660-8520
bodywisdsommassagellc@gmail.com

Here are the takeaways from our conversation:

1.     We can all be bigger than ourselves when we come together.

2.     Massage therapy is so much more than working with the physical body. Energy work is a large component of it as well.

3.     Create a safe space and be vulnerable with yourself to open more to life. Finding a professional like Marcus where you can take that to the next level is amazing.

4.     The daily grind can get in the way of being in the moment. Choose to do the NOW.

5.     Trust your instinct & intuition. Take two steps forward when it comes to being vulnerable with others. Some will appreciate it and some will dismiss it. You WILL attract your right tribe.

6.     Embrace what is around you.

7.     This breath, this moment. There is nothing beyond that. Stay grounded and know you hold the power.

8.     Everything comes down to relationships & connections. We desire more than the superficial.

The Mindful Nutritionist Shares Her Story Of Overweight to Underweight w/ Jackie Kirschen09 Apr 202400:40:58

Today's episode is full of amazing information from The Mindful Nutritionist, Jackie Kirschen. She shares her story of being overweight at a very young age to going to the extreme of being underweight and developing an eating disorder. Below you will find her bio and I know you are going to love this episode!

Jackie's info can be found at The Mindful Weight Loss Academy - Eat Right 4 Life

"I’m Jackie, owner & Registered Dietitian behind Eat Right 4 Life, specializing in weight loss, bariatrics and childhood obesity. I work w/ adults, kids and families who are overwhelmed with how to lose weight and are tired of dieting, so they can finally feel confident in their bodies, enjoy food w/o feeling guilty and finally lose weight and keep it off for good!

As your Registered Dietitian and nutrition coach, I’m here to provide you with all the tools & guidance you need to finally transform your mind & body so you can achieve the results you’ve been longing for all these years! Through personalized nutrition guidance, I make reaching your goals easy & set you up for long-term success. Nutrition & weight loss can seem overwhelming and confusing. I will work with you & empower you to become the expert of your own health!

My dedication to nutrition & wellness was inspired by my own personal struggles. While growing up, I was always active playing a team sport. However, I was never properly taught how to fuel my body with nutritious foods that could help improve my athletic and academic performance. By the end of my freshman year at Emory University, I weighed my heaviest with a BMI considered morbidly obese on my 5-foot small frame. I never considered the connection my food choices had on my quality of life and health.

After being diagnosed as pre-diabetic in college, the fear of disease, the long term consequences of being overweight, and determination for good health sparked my long weight loss journey. I reevaluated the way in which I nourished my body, both physically and mentally, and began to change my unhealthy eating habits into a healthy lifestyle. After one year of making small healthy changes, I lost 65 pounds & have kept the weight off ever since! My quest to finding a healthy lifestyle did not end the day I reached my goal weight—it catalyzed my passion in the field of nutritional science and encouraged me to become a Registered Dietitian. After seeking answers to my ailments, I became fascinated with the remarkable healing properties of food and nutrition and knew that I wanted to help people in a similar way. I discovered my love of nutrition & have never looked back!

My personal wellness journey inspired me to help others find their own “aha” moments just as I did many years ago. I absolutely love what I do & promise to continue spreading my knowledge and passion for nutrition, health, and wellness. Nothing brings me more joy than seeing my clients reach their specific health goals through the work we do together. I feel incredibly fortunate to practice what I love every single day & hope I get to work with you!"

When Spandex Moments Lead to Unexpected Growth: Pivoting with Purpose08 Aug 202500:08:33

Ever feel like life has rolled you up, wrung you out, and tossed you in a cart? That's exactly the stretch I've been experiencing lately—and surprisingly, I'm grateful for it.

When my new job opportunity appeared, my first thought was about everything I'd lose: freedom, flexibility, and precious time with my grandsons. But looking deeper, I discovered what I truly needed: financial stability, structure, and new connections. The universe has a funny way of delivering exactly what we need, even when it comes in unexpected packaging. This position literally found me, not the other way around, and I'm choosing to embrace it with deep, lesson-kind-of gratitude.

My vision for destination retreats has transformed too. While Machu Picchu and beach getaways remain on my vision board, my new schedule has inspired something different yet equally magical: weekend escapes just an hour away. These mini-retreats will still feature movement, connection, and yes—wine—reminding us that wellness doesn't require distant travels. Keep an eye out for my upcoming fall retreat that's sure to fill quickly!

Perhaps most surprising has been my Plexus journey. It's been transformative not just for my health but as financial support during this transition. I've witnessed incredible changes in energy, inflammation, gut health, sleep, and more—especially for those consistent with the products. Whether you're interested in the health benefits or the business opportunity, I'd love to connect.

When life stretches you like spandex, it's creating space for growth, abundance, and new purpose. If you're navigating your own stretch right now, I see you, I'm with you, and I'm cheering you on. Send me a message or share this episode with a friend who might need to hear that their current stretch is leading somewhere beautiful. Let's pivot with grace together—breathing deep and rolling with whatever cart life throws us into.

A Mom, A Runner, A Wine Guru & A Fitness Instructor - The Fab Four02 Apr 202400:38:03

Hello and welcome to the Spandex & Wine podcast. I'm your host, Robin Hackney, and today is a special episode because you don’t get 1 guest…you’ll be hearing from 4! About 6 months ago, I went through a workshop on podcasting under the direction of Cathy Heller. It was such a wonderful experience and one of the tasks she has us do was break into accountability groups. I’m happy to say that ours is still together and we are thriving with each other’s support. Today you get to hear from each of them plus me as we ask the others one question that pertains to our individual podcasts. Let me give you just a bit about each one…

Becca Ingersoll is a mom of twin boys with special needs and a survivor of many hard knocks of life. She lives in Utah and her podcast is Finding Joy through Life’s Trials:
https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/finding-joy-through-lifes-trials/id1724570400

Alison Fraser lives in New Zealand and has two podcasts… Women Who Podcast and Our Scotland. She also has a passion for running and ParkRuns in particular.
https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/women-who-podcast-how-to-start-run-and-grow-your-podcast/id1653722280
Our Scotland on Apple Podcasts

Penny Fitzgerald is a wine guru whom I knew before our podcasting workshop through Traveling Vineyard. She was my mentor and I’m so grateful to have her as a friend with me on this journey. What a wonderful support she has been over the years! Her podcast is Penny for your Shots… conversations (and cocktails) with brilliant women. She & I are also teaming up to host the first year of WINE CAMP in September of 2024 in Texas Hill Country.

Reclaim Your Self-Confidence & Feel Empowered with a Boudoir Photo Session w/ Emily Steele29 Mar 202400:30:47

Today’s guest offers services to help women reclaim their self-confidence and experience a sense of empowerment through boudior photo sessions. Emily Steele has been a photographer for 20 years. She has been featured in various magazines and in Times Square during New York Fashion week. I think you’ll really enjoy this episode! I was surprised in our conversation how many similarities there are between our two businesses.

What a cool job! Thanks Emily for sharing your time & story. Here are a few takeaways:

1.     If you’re looking for empowerment or to reclaim/build self-confidence, book a boodwaar session. Check the show notes for Emily’s info or visit emilysteelestudios.com.

2.     Size DOESN’T matter (or shape). You ARE beautiful and deserve to feel that way!

3.     The more uncomfortable we are in safe situations the more we grow. Push yourself & surround yourself with those that will encourage you.

4.     The more that we use things such as alcohol to alter the state of the mind, the less we can work through things. Face fears head on without using anything to mask or numb out of it.

I am booking my session with Emily so if I forget to report back to you, nudge me! Thanks for listening and please share this episode with a friend who deserves to feel beautiful and empowered.
