Here’s what I hear a lot from public sector leaders when they realise they need a support team for their career transition:

“I know I need this. But I don’t know where to find these people.”
"All my close friends are colleagues. I can’t be open with them.”
“I don’t have anyone in my network who’s done what I’m thinking about doing.”

It can be a real constraint.

Especially in the public sector, where your world can feel quite closed: colleagues, the people you work with, maybe some long-standing friendships.

Everyone seems to know everyone, with only a few degrees of separation.

And yet: everyone is kind of in the same boat, facing the same constraints, thinking the same thoughts.

So where do you find people who’ve made different choices?
Who’ve taken different paths?
Who can model something new for you?

How do you know where to look?

Let’s talk about that.

I show you where you can find three key roles for your career transition support team. And: how to approach people you don’t already know.

I recently worked with two leaders navigating career change, and they needed completely different support teams.

One leader was drowning in possibilities. She had five ideas and couldn’t decide between them. She needed someone to help her structure her thinking and break things down into steps. A Manager and a Trusted Expert were the roles she needed.

The other leader was paralysed by fear. He needed someone who believed in him and who motivated him to work things through step-by-step. A Motivator and a Mooringwere his priority.

If I’d given them both the same template – all six roles I talked about last week – one would have felt overwhelmed and the other would not have gotten what would actually help.

Your support team isn’t one-size-fits-all. It needs to be tailored to YOU.

In this episode, I help you figure out which roles matter most for where you are right now.

Imagine you’re putting together a team at work to tackle a complex project.

You wouldn’t just hire six people and hope they figure it out. You’d define roles. Clarify responsibilities. Make sure each person knows what they’re supposed to be doing. That’s the difference between a group of people and a functioning team.

Building a support team for your career change works exactly the same way.

But here’s what most people do: They vaguely mention to a friend or a family member that they’re thinking about making a change. They hope someone steps in with the right help. And then they’re disappointed when that doesn’t happen.

It’s not because people don’t care. It’s because nobody knows what their job is supposed to be.

In this episode, I’m going to walk you through 6 distinct roles. Each one serves a different function.

By the end, you’ll have a checklist. And a checklist makes everything easier.

I once worked with a public sector leader who understood that having people around her would help her with her career change.

But when it came time to actually reach out to someone to say ‘I need help’?

She froze.

“What if they think I’m weak for not being able to figure this out by myself? What if they judge me? “

It was about managing perceptions. Her own self-image, and the way others might see her.

These aren’t irrational fears. They’re real concerns.

Asking for help went against everything she’d learned.

In becoming a leader, she’d learned:

– Not to burden others with problems.
– To project competence.
– To "be professional".
– And that "vulnerability counts against me".

Notice the pattern? The assumptions? And judgments?

Let’s talk about that. And about the gap between knowing you need support and actually asking for it.

A client of mine used to think career change was a solo mission.

You figure out what you want.
You make a plan.
You execute it.

Easy peasy, right?  If only it was that simple!

But for this leader, the idea of asking someone else for help felt like failure. Because he'd had to admit he couldn’t do it by himself.

So he read books and articles. Consumed newsletters about finding your passion and designing your life.

It helped – a little.

What he didn’t realise at the time: The thing he actually needed wasn’t another worksheet. It was other people with different perspectives.

In this episode, I talk about why building your own support team isn’t a luxury – it’s the difference between struggling alone and actually moving forward.

Have you ever tried to grab a bar of soap in the shower?

It just keeps slipping out of your hands. The tighter you grip, the faster it escapes. And the more frustrated you get, the more force you use – which only makes it worse.

Changing your public sector career can be a bit like that.

The harder you try to pin down THE answer – the perfect new job, the perfect new career –  the more elusive it seems to become.

Your mind spirals or goes blank. It’s hard to form a clear thought. And you end up exactly where you started:

Stuck in a career that no longer fits.

In this episode, I share a different way of approaching this.

One that takes the pressure off… and actually opens up more possibilities.

I notice something interesting when I talk to public sector leaders about investing in themselves.

They’ll spend thousands on a degree and professional qualifications without blinking. They’ll invest their time in training courses their employer sends them on.

But when it comes to investing in something that helps them figure out what they want next in their career and life, and how to make that happen, suddenly they pause.

And I think I know why.

Because degrees and certificates are tangible. You can put them on your CV. You can show them as proof that you’ve learned something.

But…

  • Clarity about your values
  • Knowing what actually matters most to you
  • Confidence in your decisions
  • A sense of agency over your career and life

You can’t put those in a frame on your wall!

They are less tangible. So they feel less real and less valuable.

In this episode, I’m going to talk about what return on investment means. And why the "waste of money" objection might be missing something important.

I want to tell you about Chris. Chris was 46 years old. He’d built an impressive career as a government lawyer.

Worked his way up to being one of the respected voices in his ministry. Smart, competent, well-paid. By most measures, he’d made it.

But when we talked, he told me something in a whisper, like it was shameful: He’d love to become a teacher.

That ship has sailed. I’m too old now. I have a wife, two children, a mortgage. I’ve invested over 20 years in my career as a lawyer. I can’t just throw that away to start over in education. It’s too late.

He said it with such certainty. Like the door had closed and locked behind him.

And I almost leapt through my laptop screen.

Because Chris wasn’t trapped. He was caught in a story. A story that started completely unraveling once we started pulling at it.

In this episode, I talk about the stories that keep us stuck. The narratives that feel like facts but actually aren’t. And what happens when you dare to challenge them.

Imagine you’re shopping for a car.

You could buy:

- a reliable Toyota: It works. It gets you from A to B. It’s affordable.
- a sports car: Fast, exciting, cutting-edge technology. But maybe more than you need.
- a truck: Practical if that’s your life. Wasteful if it’s not.

None of them is objectively “the best car.” They’re just different cars for different people - with different needs and preferences.

The same is true when you’re looking for support to navigate a career change.

There are different options. All legitimate. All useful for the right person in the right situation.

But the right option for you depends entirely on who you are, how you learn best, and what you actually need to move forward.

In this episode, I talk you through the differences between three main options.

And I share 5 question you should ask yourself to make a choice that’s actually right for YOU.

39: How to Ask For A Conversation to Explore Your New Career Idea30 Jun 202600:04:52

One of my clients was excited about exploring a new career direction.

He’d done the thinking. He had his questions ready. He knew who he wanted to talk to.

But when it came time to actually send that first email to someone outside his network, someone he didn’t know, he froze.

He stared at a blank screen for hours.

Then drafted something he didn’t like. He was overthinking it. Trying to find the perfect words. Worrying about bothering people.

The irony is: He’d negotiated complex policy, managed difficult stakeholder relationships, handled several crises in his public sector role.

But asking for a 20-minute conversation to help with his carer change? That felt impossible.

Does this sound familiar?

In this episode, I’m going to close that gap for you. With a simple email template you can copy, paste, and send today.

A public sector leader I spoke to recently told me they’d worked hard to earn their place. They'd been "climbing the ladder" for years.

But instead of feeling proud and satisfied, they wondered:

Is this even the ladder I want to be climbing?”

From the outside, the next step is obvious: another promotion, more responsibility, more status.

But something in them hesitates.

They’re no longer sure they want to.

Yet in the current political and economic climate, with lots of uncertainty, they feel they should.

If this sounds like you, this episode is for you.

LISTEN in to find out whether you actually want a promotion... or a different life.

As a public sector leader, you know how to get things done.

You know the processes, you know the people. You value systems and evidence-based decision-making. There may not always be time for it, but that’s the ideal.

That’s why changing your career can feel a bit overwhelming. You don’t know any clear process for how to go about it.

It’s like you’re standing at the edge of a dark cliff.

You can’t see any clear path. You can’t see the destination on the other side. You can only see the cliff.

Now imagine you had a torch to shine small pools of light around to see what’s out there.

Are you curious enough?
Are you open to finding a way to get across?
To create a path that works for you?

In this episode, I’ll talk about ‘structured curiosity’. It’s a process, consisting of a 6-steps, you can follow to find career options that are the right fit for you.

It’s your torch in the dark.

A few years ago, I joined a gym. I was convinced that having access to ALL the equipment, all the classes, and all the expertise I could possibly need would transform my fitness. But I still had to show up. The gym wouldn't do the workout for me.

These days, I use an online training course. For this stage of my life - with a child, work, volunteering and everything else that comes with that - it’s a much better fit.

The point is: The training course isn’t inherently better than the gym. It’s only better because it suits me at this point in my life.

I think the same thing is happening right now with AI. Not to mention online courses, workshops, books, and all the other tools available to support career change.

Everyone seems to be asking: “What’s the best tool?

But is that the right question?

Let's talk about that.

Can you change your public sector career without risking everything?

YES. It’s not a quick-fix. But you can do it.

And it can lead you to a career that’s more aligned with who you are now – and how you want to contribute to the world in future.

It’s far more effective when you make space to think about what you really want next, both in your career AND in your life.

I used to think the only way to build a successful career was to move up within the same organisation. That’s what I saw the people around me doing. But over time my perspective shifted.

Doing work that makes a difference to how people lead their careers and live their lives. Working with leaders from all around the world, supporting and empowering them through times of change and transition.

Valuing my time highly, and working more flexibly and creatively. More importantly, I can be myself and do work that’s the best fit for me without stress or anxiety.

In my 5 month programme, I help my clients gain clarity about what success means to them now.

For now, let’s talk about the most critical mindset shifts for changing careers.

Make sure to grab my FREE downloadable ‘How to Overcome 4 Limiting Beliefs about Shifting Your Career’

A public sector leader emailed me about it, saying:

“Thank you, Yvonne, for producing such a thought provoking guide.
The clarity and honesty you bring are incredibly valuable

for people like me, who are navigating career change and
finding themselves in the slums of a negative mindset.”

Imagine you’re a trapeze artist learning a new routine. You wouldn’t practise without a net below you, would you?

The net doesn’t make the act less brave. It makes it possible.

In the public sector, you’ve likely been performing with a net you didn’t have to build all by yourself. Your employer provided it: steady salary, predictable benefits, pension contributions.

It’s worked well. Until now. When you’re considering a new move, whether that’s because you’re forced to or by choice.

It requires you to build your own safety net. And that can feel daunting, especially when you’ve never had to do it before.

Building your own financial safety net is about having enough clarity and preparation that you can explore your next act – without panic.

And: It’s about taking back agency.

In this episode, I’ll share 4 practical steps to help you build that net, so you can move forward prepared and more confidently.

I was talking to a client recently about his family situation.

He told that, over time, he and his partner had slowly started living on parallel tracks. Not because of one dramatic event. Or because anyone stopped caring.

Just… little decisions, repeated over the years. More travel for work. More pressure. More compromises that were meant to be temporary.

And slowly, their tracks drifted further apart. Different cities. Different routines. Different realities.

At one point, they were barely home together during the week. Sometimes not even on weekends. And when they were both home, everyone felt a bit like guests in each other’s lives.

What struck me most was this question one of their children asked him: “What are your priorities, Dad?”

Quite a question.

Because most people don’t intentionally choose distance from the people they love. They just stop checking whether the life they are living still matches what matters most to them.

And I think many public sector leaders DRFIT into exactly this kind of misalignment – not only in family life, but in their relationship with themselves.

So today, I want to talk about priorities. And about whether your job is serving your life… or consuming it.

When public sector leaders think about career change, they often picture a leap. A big, bold, all-or-nothing move.

They imagine it’s about leaving everything behind… and hoping the next thing works out. And that image can feel risky and scary.

Because…

What if it doesn’t work?
What if you lose what you’ve built?
What if you make the wrong decision?

So instead of moving… you stay where you are. Because it feels safer.

But career change doesn’t have to be a blind leap.

In fact, when you build a smart career transition strategy, it is a series of small, manageable and deliberate steps.

In this episode of the Space To Shift Your Career podcast, I share 3 ways to manage the risks that come with changing careers.

Have a listen and find out how to avoid leaping blindly.

There’s a sentence I hear often in career change conversations with public sector leaders. It usually comes a little hesitantly.

“I’m just… not very good at selling myself.”

And when that thought is there, a lot of things don’t happen: You don’t speak about what you want. You don’t share what you’re capable of.

You don’t lack experience or value. But you hesitate to shout about it because you don’t want to come across as bragging, pushy or - God forbid - salesy.

The interesting part is this: most public sector leaders are unusually good at communicating.

You do it when…

  • managing different internal and external stakeholders
  • building relationships across sectors, maybe even languages and cultures, and
  • navigating complex and often difficult conversations

So the issue isn’t your ability. It’s how you perceive the idea of “selling yourself”.

Let’s talk about that.

“I don’t fit into my role anymore.”

A public sector leader said this to me recently.

“On paper, everything looks fine. The salary is not great, but the benefits are ok and the stability is much better than in other sectors. But I feel like I’m pretending.

I push myself to show up the way I used to – positively, enthusiastically, can-do attitude. But it doesn’t come naturally to me anymore.

I can’t imagine doing this for the next 5, let alone 10 years. I feel like I've plateaued.”

And then they said something that really stayed with me:

“I want to feel inspired again. I want work where I can bring my full self to the table. Where I can use my strengths, do good work and see the impact I’m having. Is that too much to ask?”

If you’re listening to this and something in you is saying, “That’s me…”

Then this episode is for you.

You’ve been in your public sector career for quite some time now, and are wondering what’s next.

You could do your job in your sleep. You are tired of going through the motions. Or yet another restructure or change programme.

You know something needs to change for you to feel alive again.

You have some ideas, questions, maybe even a sense of what you want next in your career and life.

And… you also know: “I should probably talk to some people.”

It’s not like you don’t have a network. You do. In fact, an extended one. Both professionally and personally.

But something holds you back.

You might think:

“I don’t want to bother them.”
“But I’m not asking them for a job, so what’s the point?”
“What if word gets out?”

So you don’t reach out.

And without realising it, another year goes by...

In this episode, I talk about a mindset shift to help you overcome your concerns.

And I share 6 questions (out of the 14 questions I use with my clients) you can ask in your conversations to get valuable data for your career shift.

There’s a phrase out there that always makes me cringe a little.

“Secret sauce.”

You’ve probably seen or heard it before. The one thing that will change everything - IF you pay for it.

I’ve never really liked that idea.

Because when you’re sitting there, wondering what on earth to do next with your career, the last thing you need is another magic solution being dangled in front of you.

You need something practical. Not the answer, but something you can actually use.

So today, I’m going to share with you one of the most powerful coaching questions I use with my clients.

Because I’ve seen what happens when people actually sit with it. It shifts something.

And if you let it, it might just shift something FOR YOU too.

There is this moment public sector leaders don’t talk about a lot.

It’s not burnout in the way we usually think about it.

You're not exhausted from working too many hours. Not overwhelmed because you can’t cope.

You’re experienced. Trusted. Respected. You know what you're doing.

But something has shifted for you.

Maybe you find yourself sitting in meetings, listening to conversations you’ve heard a hundred times before…

Working on initiatives that once felt important…

And then this questions pops up in your mind: “What’s the point of this?”

That thought is uncomfortable.

Because this is the role you once wanted. Maybe even worked really hard to get into.

So why does it suddenly feel… empty?

Let’s explore what’s going on here.

Imagine you’ve spent years building a specialised toolkit.

You’ve used it in high-pressure situations. You know which tool to reach for when things get messy. You’ve solved problems others couldn’t.

Now imagine you walk into a completely different environment…

And suddenly... none of your tools are labelled anymore. They’re all still there. But they don’t look quite the same in this new context.

So you hesitate.

You think: “Maybe I need a whole new set of tools for this.

But what if that’s not true?

What if the real challenge isn’t that you lack the tools…

But that no one has shown you how to use them differently?

That’s exactly what I see happening with public sector leaders considering a career change.

In this episode, I want to help you recognise 3 powerful skills you already have – and how they can carry you through your career shift.

Imagine you’re standing on a lookout, scanning the horizon with a pair of binoculars.

At first, everything looks a bit blurry. So you adjust the focus.

Suddenly, certain things become sharp and clear… while others fade into the background.

Now here’s the interesting part: What you see isn’t just about what’s out there. It’s about how you’ve adjusted the lens.

The same landscape… but a completely different view.

When it comes to their career, many public sector leaders don’t realise they’re looking through a default lens

They don’t realise that they can adjust their lens.

So they keep seeing the same kinds of roles. The same organisations. The same options.

In this episode, I show you how to adjust your lens by creating your own career decision metrics. So you can evaluate your options with clarity and confidence. And notice new ones you might not have spotted before.

At some point in my work with public sector leaders exploring their next career move, someone always asks me, sometimes half-joking, sometimes half panicking:

“What am I going to do with my life?”

That is such a BIG question. And big questions feel HEAVY.

Your career influences where you live, how much you earn, how you structure your days, the people you surround yourself with, and the impact you feel you you're making. Of course, it feels stressful not to have a clear answer.

But when I sit with public sector leaders in that moment, I often notice the stress isn’t really about not knowing. It’s about what they THINK not knowing says about them.

In this episode, I talk about 3 uncertainty traps to avoid to help you feel more at ease with not-knowing.

Imagine you’re standing on one side of a river.

On the other side is work that energises you. That aligns with who you are now and how you want to contribute in future.

The problem?

The water feels fast and unpredictable. Leaping straight across feels risky. Staying where you are feels safe - but stagnant.

Some people find a log to cross. Others hop across stepping stones. Sometimes, the smartest thing to do is build a bridge - piece by piece.

In this episode of the Space To Shift Your Career podcast, I talk about a powerful but often overlooked strategy  for public sector leaders to change careers.

Changing careers can feel a bit like a divorce. But not just from a job.

It can feel like breaking up with a part of yourself.

The part that introduced you at conferences.
The part that signed emails with a certain title.
The part that felt proud when people asked: “So what do you do?”

When public sector leaders tell me they’re considering a career change, they say it feels like a confession.

Because it doesn’t just feel like leaving a role. It feels like letting go of who they’ve been for years, for decades. And THAT can feel existential.

In this episode, I talk about why career change can feel intense on an identity level, and how you can navigate that transition with more clarity and self-compassion.

Many public sector leaders feel guilty for wanting something different, even when their work no longer lights them up.

They stay in roles not because they still love them. But because they feel loyal.

Loyal to the mission. Loyal to their team.  Loyal to the public sector.

What if loyalty isn’t just something you owe your organisation, but something you owe yourself?

In episode 21 of the Space To Shift Your Career podcast, we explore the flip side of loyalty.

And I talk about why being loyal to yourself might be the most important leadership decision you make.

Do you feel like you’re performing a role you’ve outgrown?

There’s a significant difference between resigning yourself to a career on auto-pilot and living out your ideal career and life.

Your ideal career:

  • Aligns with who you are now and how you want to evolve in future
  • Taps into your strengths, interests and passions
  • Makes you feel alive again
  • And: is sustainable, in all dimensions of the word

It’s easy to get excited about work on Mondays because what you do is right up your alley. You don’t have to go through the motions or re-invent wheels.

The difference is in your sense of ease and flow – even joy! – rather than having life’s energy sucked out of you.

How can you make sure you are changing into YOUR ideal career?

You allow yourself to make space to reconnect with yourself - and to think things through properly.

Give yourself permission to go on a journey to EXPLORE, DREAM and DISCOVER: Where you have come from. Who you are now. And how you want to contribute in future.

That’s what I help public sector leaders do in my Find Your Career Space programme.

It brings you a deep sense of feeling grounded in your identity, values and direction.

As a public sector leader, you don’t make big decisions just based on vibes. You work with evidence.

You don’t just throw ideas around casually. You use frameworks, analysis, robust processes.

So when I say: “Just tap into your creativity about your future…” you’ll probably think it sounds a bit ... fluffy.

But creativity isn’t about doing something vague or impractical.

It’s an essential part of the exploration process.

It’s the phase where you step back and ask: What else could be possible?

Where you go wide before narrowing down.

Because if you don’t allow yourself to explore new ideas, you’ll only ever choose from the options you already know.

And that’s exactly where a lot of us get stuck.

In this episode, I talk about why creativity is an essential tool for exploring exciting career options aligned with who you are now.

And I share 3 steps to help public sector leaders tap into their own creativity.

Have you ever noticed how old scripts stick around long after they’re useful?

Like a template that’s been copied and pasted for years.

No one remembers any more who actually wrote it originally. But everyone keeps using it - because they’ve always used it.

It once served a purpose. It reduced risk. Avoided embarrassment. Helped things run smoothly and efficiently.

But over time, that familiar old template can turn into a handbrake.

In this episode of Space to Shift Your Career, we’ll explore what happens when old templates shape your career decisions.

I’ll talk about the ‘What If’ script and how stories about failure - that many of us are still living by - can hold us back from going after what we actually want in our career and life.

As a public sector leader, you are used to working on wicked problems that don’t have easy answers.

Think back to the last time you led through a complex piece of work in uncertain conditions.

You didn’t have the perfect brief. You and your team just got on with it.

You gathered information. You tested assumptions. And you adjusted as you went.

And yet, when it comes to their own career, many public sector leaders do the opposite.

They wait for clarity before acting. For certainty before experimenting. For the lightning-bolt that makes everything obvious.

Are you waiting for that moment too?

In this episode of the Space To Shift Your Career podcast, I talk about why that moment rarely comes – and what to do instead.

In the public sector, we’re trained to scan the horizon: New policy challenges. Political cycles. Economic trends. Resourcing needs.

We’re used to a working environment where advisors give advice, decision makers decide, implementers implement. That’s just how it works, right?

But lately, it feels like the old certainties are gone.

Geopolitical and economic forces are challenging what we long took for granted.

Things that used to happen out there in the world are starting to feel closer to home.

And for many public sector leaders, something unsettling is happening beneath the surface.

A realisation that their career - the one they thought was stable, values-aligned, and relatively secure - may be more exposed than they ever imagined.

Not because they did anything wrong. But because geopolitics, economics, and political priorities shifted.

So today I want to ask you a simple but powerful question:

If forces outside your control changed your role tomorrow, how prepared would you be?

In this episode, we’ll talk about how to take back agency over your career before you’re forced to react.

Many of us entered work in the public sector with a strong sense of purpose and duty.

We measured success by impact: how well we served the public, supported our teams, or upheld fairness and accountability.

Over time, those external measures became deeply internalised: performance reviews, recognition, pay bands. They started to define us.

And yet, the longer we stay, the more we notice a dissonance: that our own definition of success hasn’t been updated in years.

If you’ve been in your public sector career for a while, this might be the moment for a “success definition review”.

A chance to ask: Are the measures you set for yourself still the right ones for who you’ve become today?

In this episode, I’ll share 6 powerful questions designed to help you re-define success in a way that honours your public sector background AND opens up new possibilities.

As public sector leader, you witness how the world is shifting quickly. Long-term strategies like five-year career plans don’t hold up anymore.

But letting go of certainty doesn’t mean letting go of your desire to have impact.

The reason you entered this work was clear: you wanted to solve big problems, make a difference, and contribute to something larger than yourself.

But here’s the challenge: once you’ve framed your impact in that way, it can feel like there are NO alternatives.

You ask yourself: where else could I possibly have this kind of influence?

That belief - that your contribution is only valid at that scale, only meaningful when it’s national or global - can trap you.

It can hold you back from exploring alternative futures. It can keep you disconnected from things closer to home: where you live, and the people around you.

Imagine for a moment that impact has many levels. And you get to choose what matters most to you now.

In this episode, we’ll uncover 3 layers to help you uncover how you want to contribute in future.

Today, on the last day of 2025, I want to share with you my personal end-of-year reflection framework.

Yes, it’s THAT time of the year again!

Why do people do this?

I do it…

  • To be more CONSCIOUS and in tune with my values.
  • To HOLD me from rushing straight into strategizing and planning the next year.
  • To take time to look back BEFORE looking forward.

To notice and acknowledge what has been. Things that went as I had hoped for and the surprises along the way. And to check in on my intentions for the year.

Rather than rushing it, I like to take time to do this. That way I can come back to it a couple of times as new thoughts emerge.

Not only when I sit down and think about it. But also when I’m out and about or pottering around at home.

Then I make an appointment with myself. I sit down and write down my reflections.

I follow a framework of questions that I’d like to share with you today.

I use this with my clients and everyone tells me how eye-opening it is!

You know how every year, as government agencies approach the end of the financial cycle, we rush to close off reports, tidy loose ends, and get the numbers lined up before the cut-off?

We prepare briefing notes, ministerial updates, budget forecasts, end-of-year performance papers.

But we rarely prepare ourselves to transition into downtime.

It’s almost like we assume rest will somehow squeeze itself into the calendar between end-of-year events, office lunches, staff farewells - and last minute emergencies.

But rest does NOT automatically appear!

For many public sector leaders, the holiday period is actually the busiest time of emotional labour:

Family commitments, social expectations, and carrying the responsibility of keeping things steady - “just in case something happens”.

So here’s my question for you today:

What would it look like to apply the same intentional planning you give to your work… to the break your mind and body actually need?

In this episode, I share 3 questions to help you take stock.

Be honest with yourself. And courageous.

Your future self will thank you for it!

If you’ve ever worked on a Cabinet paper, a briefing, or programme update, you’ll know the drill.

Before anything sees the light of day, you run it past the front-page test:

“How would this look if it landed on the front page of the newspaper tomorrow morning?”

It’s automatic – like muscle memory.

I was speaking recently with a group of public sector leaders about their career journeys.

One of them shared that in their team, the risk register was so central that it practically had its own seat at the table.

Then they added: “We even have an opportunities tab!”

They paused… and then said: “It’s empty.

We both laughed, nodding our heads.

But then sat with the truth of that.

When you’ve spent years, maybe decades, in a system that is built on risk mitigation, what does that do to your mindset?

The question that’s been echoing for me ever since is this:

If everything you do at work starts with a risk register… does your career change process start with one too?

In this episode I share 3 ways you can test how your risk mindset affects your career shift.

Have you ever watched a hamster running on its wheel?

From the outside, it looks like motion, progress. All that energy. But from the inside, it must feel like endless circling with no way out.

That’s what it can feel like when you live on autopilot. Work and life are busy. You’ve got your routines to keep moving. But you’re going through the motions. And it’s hard to step off and pause.

The same is true when your career ideas only live inside your head. They spin round and round, going in circles, but nothing changes.

This is one of the biggest challenges public sector leaders face: stepping away from the day-to-day to think about what they really want.

So let me ask you:

  • Do you make space to think out loud about YOUR ideas?
  • Do you have a safe space to talk about them?

With someone who doesn’t deflate your ideas, but instead adds air to them?

Someone who fuels your ideas, and asks:  What do you need to make this happen?

In this episode, I share 3 practical ways to step out and start exploring what’s next.

Imagine being handed an old manual to run a department in today’s world.

The structures have changed. The funding streams have shifted. The stakeholders are different. But you're still expected to make things work, using outdated tools.

That’s what it feels like for many public sector leaders considering a career change. They rely on ideas and beliefs shaped decades ago.

Ideas about what a successful career ‘should’ look like. About changing careers being unwise, naive, impossible. Simply an own goal.

Beliefs that might have been useful once. But now?

In a changing world of work requiring us to deal with change at an ever faster pace, to be adaptable life-long-learners?

They might just be keeping you stuck.

In this episode, I unpack 4 common myths holding public sector leaders back from changing careers - even from just exploring alternatives. Myths that self-censor.

I share real life stories of humans who challenged those myths.

Humans with public sector careers, who shifted into something different. Something they had perhaps only dreamed about: a career that makes them feel joyful, energised and alive.

You wouldn’t set out on a long journey without a compass or GPS. Or the maps app on your phone.

Even if you think you know the route, things change: road closures, traffic, better paths you didn’t know about.

And yet... this is how many of us move through our careers in the public sector: we follow the expected road. The logical promotional path. The well-known track, carved out by someone else.

But logic isn’t the same as what’s meaningful TO YOU.

And direction isn’t the same as alignment.

I’ve seen this happening for the public sector leaders who get in touch to work with me.

As one leader told me:

“If you don’t think about what you do, you find yourself in this senior role and ask yourself: Did I actually want this kind of a life?”

In this episode, I want to help you pause and recalibrate.

I’ll share 2 powerful questions (out of the 10 questions) I use with my clients. Both are designed to bring you back to what matters most to you at this moment in your career and life.

Because BEFORE you choose a new direction, you need to reconnect with your own inner guidance system. With YOUR compass.

Imagine a bird in a beautiful cage.

From the outside, it looks like the perfect home: polished bars, regular meals, shelter from storms. The bird is safe.

But when you look closer, you notice the way it stares at the sky. It’s comfortable in there… but the bird longs to fly.

That’s what I hear consistently from public sector leaders who’ve been thinking about their next career move.

They value the stability and benefits of their current role. The “golden” part of the cage.

But they also feel the weight of what they’re missing: more autonomy, creativity, flexibility. More alignment with what they really care about.

They long for something different and wonder: what else might be out there?

But the cage keeps them from following their curiosity.

In this episode, I’m going to talk about the #1 fear that keeps them inside: financial security.

I’ll share three practical steps you can take to go through that door and spread your wings.

>> 5 Meanings Of Space Public Sector Leaders Should Consider When Exploring A Career Change <<

A few weeks ago, one of my listeners wrote to say how much she loved the name Space To Shift Your Career.

She said: “For me, space isn’t just about time. It’s about the physical environment I’m in, especially when I’m in nature. That’s when I finally feel like myself again. Grounded, alive, able to breathe.”

Her words stopped me in my tracks.

Because that’s EXACTLY why I chose the name.  And why I end every episode with “make space, rediscover you, and then take action.”

Space isn’t one-dimensional. It’s not just about finding an empty slot in your diary.

It’s multi-layered: time, environment, energy, people. And the FLOW we feel when we’re aligned.

That’s what we’ll explore in this episode: what “space” really means.

And how extending your definition can help you expand what’s possible for your career and life.

Let me ask you something: When you hear the word ‘dream’, do you roll your eyes - even just a little?

You’re not alone.

To many of us ‘dreaming’ sounds lofty. Naive. The opposite of what we need.

Especially in the public sector, where realism, facts and measurable outcomes are the currency - what place does dreaming have?

But here’s a thought: imagine your career without a vision. No direction. Just duty.

That’s not realism. That’s resignation.

In this episode, I’ll talk about why so many smart, experienced and driven public sector leaders struggle to imagine what’s next for them. And how that might be holding them back more than they think.

So if the word ‘dream’ makes you uncomfortable… stay with me. I’ll share 3 practical ways to remove that stop sign.

Have you ever been on a boat that slowly loses momentum?

It starts off strong. Full speed ahead. Purpose clear. Destination in sight. But over time, it begins to slow. Not because something is wrong. Just because something shifted.

The scenery outside is still beautiful. The passengers are still kind. But your gaze starts to drift towards the horizon. You’re not feeling lost completely, but no longer sure where you’re headed.

You begin to wonder: ‘Is this still where I want to go?’

Maybe you’ve left the familiar shore behind. Or maybe you’re still anchored, because you know the current isn’t quite right for you anymore.

You’ve steered a steady course for years. You’ve served, led, and solved big problems with heart and integrity. And now? The water feels still. Other times choppy. And somehow not yours to sail anymore.

That can be an uncomfortable place, this in-between. You might wonder: ‘Am I just tired? Or is it time for something new?’

If you’re in the public sector and starting to feel that something has shifted for you, you’re not alone.

In fact, you might be in a powerful moment. One where you decide to be more intentional about how you want your next chapter to unfold.

In this episode, I’ll share 3 mindset shifts that can help you move forward with more clarity, integrity and hope for what’s next.

Not by having it all figured out, but by learning to navigate uncertainty in a way that’s more aligned with your pace, your priorities, and your possibilities.

You know those creeping silent changes you don’t notice until one day something feels… off?

It’s subtle. You’re not miserable, not exactly. But you’re also not thriving.

Maybe you notice the Sunday evening blues more often. Maybe it's a tightness in your chest you can’t quite explain.

And then there’s this question emerging in the back of your mind:

“Is this still the right path for me?”

As a leader in the public sector, you're not afraid of hard work. You've weathered crises, shown up with resilience, and stayed committed to making a difference.

You’ve thought: “maybe it’s just a busy season” or “things will settle down.”

But deep down, you suspect this isn’t temporary.

And here's the trickiest part: everything still looks good on the outside. Stable job. Important mission. Great colleagues.

But somehow you have this feeling that you’ve outgrown something. Or that your values have shifted or mean something different to you now. That maybe, just maybe, it’s time for a new chapter.

So what if, without realizing it, you’re staying in a situation that’s no longer good for you?

What if the very structure you rely on for purpose, security, or loyalty is also what's limiting you?

If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone.

In this episode, I want to share a metaphor that might help you understand what’s going on, and what to do about it.

It’s not about jumping ship. It’s about tuning in: to yourself, your assumptions, and the signals your life is sending.

Let’s explore 4 ways staying where you are might be costing you more than you think.

We audit all kinds of things in life.

We check our finances to make sure we’re on track. We get our cars inspected regularly to stay safe on the road. We go to the doctor for check ups.

Even if nothing seems wrong, we still do it. Because little problems can build up quietly over time.

But how often do we do that for our careers?

We just keep going. New role, new challenge, new round of restructuring.

Until something feels off. A rattle. A slow leak in motivation.

Maybe you’re not crashing. Maybe you’re just cruising. But you feel like you’re not exactly thriving either.

That’s when a career audit can be helpful.

A simple way to look back at your past roles, spot the patterns, and ask:

What’s energising me now? Where am I wearing thin?

Because just like with money, or your car, or your health, the earlier you notice what’s out of alignment, the easier it is to make adjustments.

In this episode, I’ll walk you through a set of questions to help you take stock, so you can feel not just functional in your career… but conscious about what might need changing.

Have you ever had that moment, maybe in the middle of a Zoom call or while walking back from a policy briefing, where something in you pauses?

Where, for a split second, you hear a quiet voice asking:

Is this it? Is this what I want for the rest of my life?

You’re not unhappy exactly. You’re doing important work, making a difference, serving the public good. You’ve helped shape programs that matter, maybe even helped shift systems for the better.

People respect you. You’ve built your career here.

And yet, somewhere between the deadlines and the duty, there’s that itch for more freedom, more creativity, more flexibility. More you in the work you do.

Maybe you’ve tried to push it aside. You told yourself it’s not logical or practical. That you should just be grateful for what you have. Especially in these uncertain times.

You’ve told yourself the timing isn't right. Or that you’d have to start from scratch. That stepping away from a career like yours would be risky. Selfish, even.

But what if that whisper inside you is worth listening to?

What if it knows something your logical mind hasn’t caught up with yet?

In this episode, I’m sharing my story. Not because I have all the answers. But because I followed that whisper. And it led me somewhere I couldn’t have imagined before.
