The last time anyone saw 49-year-old Emily Anderson was December 29, 2005. As husband, Jerry Anderson was naturally the first suspect. But he seemed to be able to account for his time that day and he passed a polygraph. After an anonymous call, Emily’s body was discovered on January 7, 2006. Nellie Jackson opened her business in 1930, the start of the Great Depression. She ran her bordello openly for the next 60 years, through wars and social strife. She was a beloved matron of Natchez, Mississippi despite her profession because she was such a generous, charitable woman. And she became a legend after working as an FBI informant during the Civil Rights movement. She was fearless. She was an excellent business woman and a pillar of her community. Natchez was devastated when she was brutally attacked in July of 1990.

In the early morning hours of June 6th, 1996, a woman named Darlie Routier called 911, screaming that she and her sons had been stabbed. When police and paramedics arrived on the scene, 6 year old Devon Routier, who would have been 7 in a week, was already dead, from 2 deep stab wounds.

5 year old Damon Routier had four stab wounds to his back and was unresponsive but was still rushed to Baylor hospital where he was pronounced dead at 3:26am, an hour after his mother called 911.

On July 8, 1997, a young sailor returned home after a week at sea, and found his wife dead in their bedroom. Michelle Moore-Bosco had been raped and murdered. Police quickly zeroed in on a neighbor who insisted he was innocent. But after 10 hours of coercive interrogation, he confessed. Six months later, when his DNA was not a match, police changed their theory of the crime. Now, instead of clearing the neighbor, they insisted he didn’t act alone. Over the next few months, police would claim up to 8 suspects had attacked Michelle. Four would actually be indicted. It would take over a decade to prove their innocence, even though police had a DNA match and confession from Michelle’s real killer.

On May 22 1992, Betty Wilson frantically called 911 from her Huntsville, Alabama home. She found her husband, the esteemed Dr. Jack Wilson, in a pool of blood. Someone had bludgeoned and stabbed him to death. Initially, police had no suspects. Until an anonymous tip led them to a man named James White. James confessed to killing Dr. Wilson to prove his love for Betty’s twin sister, Peggy. According to James, Peggy had insisted that he murder her sister’s husband. In June of 1959, the torsos of two men were found in a rural part of northeast Alabama. The gruesome discoveries sparked a media firestorm as locals feared they had a mad man stalking their homes. In 1960, 25 year old Irene Garza was raped and murdered in McAllen, Texas. The Mexican-American former beauty queen, was a devout catholic and a pillar of her community. She was last seen going to confession on Holy Saturday before Easter. The McAllen community was outraged and heartbroken and there was a massive investigation. In June of 1994, a car was found in a ditch on a deserted stretch of Little Mountain Road in Newberry, South Carolina. A woman was found slumped over the steering wheel. Though the road was in a rural area thick with woods and steep ravines, where accidents often happen, police immediately suspected foul play. The woman, named Vickie Lander Beckham, had horrific injuries to her face and neck that could not have come from such a minor accident. Soon law enforcement discovered that Vickie, a senator’s daughter, and her husband Stephen, son of an Episcopal Bishop, were in the middle of a divorce. The investigation became scandalous front page news with the powerful men in each family caught up in the drama.

In the summer of 1991, the small town of Cherryville, North Carolina, was horrified by two double murders. A local was quickly targeted by police, a man related to one of the families. And it destroyed his life. Another accidental death was tied to the murders, brought on by the fear of one of Cherryville’s residents. In September of 2011, a 25 year old woman from Hendersonville, TN, traveled to a wedding near her alma mater, Western Kentucky University. While at the wedding, she changed in front of the entire wedding party. And then posed for photos in a bridesmaid’s dress she had been fitted for 9 months earlier. No one noticed anything unusual about Lindsey Lowe’s appearance or behavior. But 2 days later, she would secretly give birth to twin babies in the bathroom she shared with her sister in her parents' home. She said she had a stomach virus and missed one day of work. And then she returned to her job as if nothing had happened. And then her mother went upstairs to start a load of laundry for Lindsey and was horrified at what she found in her laundry basket.

The new mother, 18 year old Jessica Currin, was found partially clothed, badly burned and already decomposing. The incompetence of local police doomed the case from the beginning. In 1994, a New York writer released a very southern gothic, non-fiction, crime novel. “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil” became a national sensation. John Berendt’s seductive prose and his cast of eccentric characters drew readers into the lush culture of Savannah, Georgia. But the central plot was a scandal from 1981. Semi-closeted socialite, Jim Williams, had shot his lover dead in the study of his home. He went through four trials for the murder of Danny Hanson, a record in Georgia at the time. Berendt’s book became a movie in 1997, directed by Clint Eastwood. Many people don’t know the real story of the Mercer House murder. This is a look at the case, as well as the book and movie that captivated the nation.

The Death of Andrew Lewis -- a beloved musician is shot. His ex-girlfriend was a witness. The shooter, Eli Miller, was her date and he had been trying to assault Andrew all evening. Miller would claim it was self-defense. But how is shooting someone in the back of the head self-defense?
