| Episode 41: THE PILGRIMAGE - Part 5: WAITING ROOM - with Hania Rani | 31 juil. 2026 | 00:22:33 | |
The final installment of a five-part pilgrimage to the 2026 BIG EARS festival. At Big Ears, the Polish pianist and composer moved between two modes: the orchestral expansiveness of her piano concerto Non Fiction with the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra, and the arpeggiated synth patterns of her solo electronic alter ego Chilling Bambino—a love letter to her Prophet 8 and a chance to escape the rigor of classical composition for smaller, weirder rooms. She discusses why she created the alias ("people who don't know Hania Rani can just enter with curiosity"), the value of creating space to think in an overscheduled world, and the festival's ethos of genre refusal, where listening means staying with what you don't yet understand. | Episode 41: THE PILGRIMAGE - Part 4: IN RESIDENCE - with Booker Stardrum | 30 juil. 2026 | 00:27:00
The fourth installment of a five-part pilgrimage exploring the 2026 BIG EARS festival. The drummer of LA quintet SML, Booker Stardrum reflects on the group’s remarkable six-set residency, where groove-based improvisation pivoted from dance party to delicate texture, fueled by the rare alchemy of strong personalities who refuse to dominate. Stardrum also discusses Close-up On The Outside, his deep new solo album for We Jazz, a quiet meditation that showcases his unique compositional voice apart from his collaborators. Against the backdrop of a festival that felt like a love letter to LA’s rise as a gravitational center for contemporary music, he notes the cross-pollination on display: “When we lock in, we lock in. It’s an honor to play with musicians of that talent.” Sound Propositions should be available wherever you get your podcasts, so please keep an eye out and subscribe (and rate and review, it helps others who might be interested find us). The third installment of a five-part pilgrimage exploring the 2026 BIG EARS festival. The harpist Mary Lattimore discusses her duo set with Julianna Barwick in a Knoxville church, where their ethereal songs took on added weight. She reflects on Tragic Magic, their recent full-length born from processing sadness while seeking sparkle, including a song written for them by Roger Eno and a cover of Vangelis' “Rachel's Song" bookended by field recordings of the first rain after the LA fires. She also discusses working with 18th century harps, scoring moving images, and why she likens the festival to summer camp. | Episode 41: THE PILGRIMAGE - Part 2: WELSH PRIMITIVE - with Gwenifer Raymond | 28 juil. 2026 | 00:18:14
The second installment of a five-part pilgrimage exploring the 2026 BIG EARS festival. The Welsh guitarist brought her "Welsh primitive" to a dive bar in Knoxville—Appalachian fingerpicking channeled through 90s punk energy, delivered barefoot and shredding by noon with thumb picks in hand. She discusses reinvention over preservation (tradition, she says, is just "good licks"), her first-ever pilgrimage to Appalachia (and its surprising links to Wales), last year's ACL-beloved Last Night I Heard the Dog Star Bark, her recent WFMU live album, and her surprisingly effective duo with the "diametrically opposed" Hayden Pedigo.Sound Propositions should be available wherever you get your podcasts, so please keep an eye out and subscribe (and rate and review, it helps others who might be interested find us). | Episode 41: THE PILGRIMAGE - Part 1: TECTONIC PRAYERS - with Chuck Johnson | 28 juil. 2026 | 00:15:20
The first installment of a five-part pilgrimage exploring the 2026 BIG EARS festival. Chuck Johnson, known for his pedal steel work, talks about his sample-based solo drone set in St. John's Cathedral, a fitting stage to deliver tectonic, low-end rumbles and sustained harmonics, as documented on his live Caoine series. The episode also recaps the "Scoring the Story" panel, breaking down the grueling labor and ego-suspension required in film composing. Johnson also explains why this spacious, filter-driven shift felt like the next logical step for his practice, and how it has grown out of his recent practice as a DJ.

| Episode 30: SLEPT ON IT - with Gabe Bogart | 10 févr. 2026 | 00:47:44 | |
Three years ago I interviewed my friend and occasional ACL contributor Gabe Bogart for Episode 29, our anniversary episode. We had such a good time we talked about doing a podcast called SLEPT ON IT, and so I sat on this episode for years, waiting for us to get off our asses and make it happen. No one ever asked why episode 30 was missing, so it feels right for an episode with this title to turn up years later. We discuss adventurous listening, the dangers of nostalgia, the hip hop renaissance of the 2020s, and much more. Happy Listening! | Episode 40: FASHION (or, MONEY IS FERTILIZER) - with Antonina Nowacka and Dreamcrusher | 28 nov. 2024 | 00:35:53
The second part of a special double feature, returning us to Krakow’s Unsound festival, where we began with Episode 1. The inaugural episode featured Resina and Lea Bertucci, from Poland and New York, respectively, and so for the sake of symmetry, this episode pairs Antonina Nowacka and Dreamcrusher, two artists who make affective, vocal-based music, but to very different affects. That is to say, this is an episode that leans into contrasts: the US and Europe, home and away, morning and night, quiet and noise. We discuss non-dance DJ sets, the relationship between music and fashion, the joys and difficulties of traveling as an artist, and the adventurous programming of Unsound. | Episode 39: REVERSE POLARITY - with Negativland | 26 nov. 2024 | 00:44:03
Negativland has always been about media literacy; their pranks are not only humorous but reveal something about how media function. But in recent years, as the world has changed around them, their relationship to this aspect of their practice has had to evolve. What was subversive in the 80s is mostly met with a shrug today. While sampling has become less essential to their work, the group continues to reappropriate and recontextualize human speech, and in an age of AI voice clones, the importance of using actual voices becomes even more significant. Last fall, I sat down with Negativland’s Mark Hosler and Jon Leidecker (Wobbly) at Krakow, Poland’s Unsound festival to discuss the history of their long running group, the importance of radio, and how the changing mediascape has transformed the meaning of their work as collage has gone mainstream. | Episode 38: DIS/PLACED - with Matana Roberts | 12 sept. 2024 | 01:00:00
Matana Roberts is a multidisciplinary artist, saxophonist, composer, and performer. With the release of In the Garden…, their ongoing, projected 12-chapter series COIN COIN is near its midpoint. Roberts has developed a composition system for the series based on mixed media scores combining graphic notation, visual art, film, and ephemera, channeling the images and (hi)stories left behind. Coming out of the fertile hybrid music scenes of Chicago, Roberts resists being pigeon-holed into any one genre, and has a particularly complicated relationship being labeled as a “jazz” musician. In fact, as they point out in this episode, Roberts rejects binaries in general, preferring to explore other ways of being, a theme which is also reflected in the narratives of each of the chapters of COIN COIN. In this episode, we discuss Chapter Five, the loss of jaimie branch, and the lessons they learned from Montreal. France Jobin has been exploring quantum theory for many years now, an interest that has shown up in her compositions, sound installations, and work with VR. But the pandemic finally afforded the Montreal-based minimalist composer time for deeper study with a personal brain trust of physicists she’d assembled over the years. Jobin recently released Infinite Probabilities (Particle 2) on the great Room40 label. We sat down in Montreal to discuss her formative sonic experiences, her origin in a blues band, her interest in physics, and a growing body of audio-visual work with Markus Heckmann. AGF is a powerful poemproducer. She first described herself in these terms on a track of that title from Westernization Completed, her Ars Electronica winning breakthrough album. Poemproducer became her “internet name,” and has come to stand in for her idiosyncratic approach to vocal-based electronic music. Last November, AGF quietly released Poemproducer, almost exactly 20 years after Westernization Completed. Channeling her internet name into her first proper solo studio album since SOLIDCITY (2017), Poemproducer is built around mutating bass, freeplayed rhythms, and subtle field recordings. We discuss the evolution of her musical practice, her interest in pedagogy, feminism, collective politics and much more. | Episode 34: OLD & NEW DREAMS - with Kerry O'Brien and Will Robin | 28 févr. 2024 | 01:00:57
This episode of Sound Propositions features scholars Kerry O’Brien and Will Robin, editors of the recent anthology On Minimalism: Documenting a Musical Movement. Described as a historical source reader, the book compiles over 100 primary sources retelling the story of minimalist music from the 1950s to the present. Sources include liner notes, interviews, journalism, manifestos, and other material organized chronologically and thematically, with introductory essays from the editors. Not a simple revisionist history seeking to expand the canon, let alone an attempt to dethrone the “Big Four” composers, On Minimalism nonetheless radically reconsiders the scope of minimalist music. In some ways the book is a restorative history, following the offshoots of musical practices that had once been described as “minimalist,” beginning with non-western music and modal jazz in the 1950s up to drone rock and techno of the present. We discuss the influence of Ravi Shankar, why the Coltranes were minimalists, the Julius Eastman revival, and much more. Having first captured our attention with Monolithic Nuance (2018) for Longform Editions, Megan Mitchell’s Cruel Diagonals has continued to impress with each new work. With Fractured Whole, she set herself the task of producing an album using nothing but her voice as raw material. While she deserves recognition as a gifted vocalist, she deserves at least as much praise for her production work, alchemically transmuting her voice into a wide range of instruments and textures. In this episode, she discusses the production challenges posed by Fractured Whole, her background in musical theatre, her work with the feminist archive Many Many Women, and much more. Patrick Nickleson is the author of The Names of Minimalism: Authorship, Art, Music, and Historiography in Dispute, an academic study that radically reconsiders the origins and boundaries of musical minimalism. Uninterested in searching for the earliest work of musical minimalism, or even in doing the admittedly necessary work of expanding the canon to include lesser known but equally important figures, Nickleson instead underscores a different set of shared traits that he sees in (early) minimalism: the importance of collective authorship, often collaborating in a form of “bandness”; the priority of recording to tape over written scores; and distinguishing between “(early) minimalism” and the later canonization of Minimalism as we know it since the early 1980s. In addition to the book, we discuss searching for obscure records online, our shared love of Constellation Records, and the influence of Tony Conrad.
