George Clinton celebrated his 85th birthday on July 22nd and in this episode of the Soul Patrol we are extending the celebration. We will follow his story chronologically — from the Parliaments’ doo-wop beginnings, through Funkadelic and Parliament at their height, and into the solo records that carried P-Funk into the hip-hop era. Deep cuts, essential collaborators and one or two undeniable classics are all ahead.

Dayton, Ohio is known as The Land of Funk because an extraordinary number of major funk bands emerged from one mid-sized Midwestern city during the 1970s and early ’80s. The Ohio Players, Slave, Zapp, Lakeside, Sun, Faze-O and others built a sound powered by tight rhythm sections, horns, synthesizers and serious stagecraft.
