The primary way that we deepen our relationships is through communication. But as any human knows, communication isn’t always easy — even with the people we love the most! Even in the most respectful and healthy relationships, we will sometimes encounter situations that involve friction. Sometimes, this can take the form of requests or expectations that feel out of alignment with our beliefs or boundaries. Sometimes, it can take the form of conflicting values or opinions. And sometimes, it can involve a serious disagreement about something important. When these situations come up, you have a few choices. Sometimes, “going along to get along” is the right choice. Often, these situations require difficult conversations in order to heal. Addressing the elephant in the room can feel uncomfortable… or even scary! We will often avoid it, but this only allows the issue to fester and the wound to deepen, which can weaken the relationship. At other times, it’s okay to just ignore the topic and move on. And occasionally, the relationship may just have run its course… and it’s time to let go. Astrid, my greyhound, isn’t just a beloved member of the family — she’s also my life coach in many ways and the inspiration for this episode of Soul Guide Radio! As a greyhound, Astrid’s lineage includes thousands of years of breeding for hunting skills and instinct. When she’s chasing rabbits, she is working in her zone of genius. For the sake of the rabbits, I need to keep her tethered on her leash, which keeps a source of joy just out of her reach. If you think about it, I’m sure you can identify areas in your life where you keep YOURSELF tethered — where you put a leash on the pursuit of your own dreams and desires, and hold yourself back from experiences that will bring you joy and excitement. This is YOUR version of chasing rabbits. It’s an act that entices you not because of a promised reward at the end, but because simply doing this thing IS the reward. We tether ourselves from these experiences out of fear — fear of failure, fear of outshining those around us, fear of not living up to the expectations of others. We leash ourselves up to stay safe, but this safety keeps us from living (and thriving!) in the present moment, tapping into the absolute joy of our own focused, untethered energy, and developing mastery through overcoming challenges. If your Divine Guidance Team sent you a wake-up call, would you recognize it? Life’s wake-up calls are also known as “sliding doors” moments. A sliding doors moment happens when a seemingly insignificant decision is made that alters the course of future events, and maybe even the rest of your life — you may remember a 1998 film starring Gwyneth Paltrow that explores this idea. I experienced my own sliding doors moment after my near-death experience in 2009, when I was feeling especially vulnerable and fragile. During this time, I was offered the opportunity to do humanitarian work in Afghanistan. I knew I wasn’t as strong as I’d like to be for this sort of work and that I should ease myself back into life, rather than jumping into a war zone… but my heart said YES. And so I went. While working that job, I met the love of my life. Now, we’re married and raising three beautiful children. If I’d said no to that job and found something less stressful, my life would be dramatically different. This wasn’t a random, inconsequential moment. It arrived by divine design. Have you ever been told to get out of your head and into your body? In the spiritual world, we sometimes make thinking, or being up in our heads, seem like a bad thing. But it doesn’t have to be. There is a ‘right way’ to use your brain and explore… and that is when it’s led from the heart. Heart-led thinking means being fully present in your body and in the NOW, not distracted by remembering everything that went wrong yesterday or feeling anxious about the things you need to do tomorrow.
