| Oteil Burbridge | 20 Sep 2023 | 00:29:51 | |
You won't find many bass players on the jam band scene more respected than Oteil Burbridge. He's best known for his time in The Allman Brothers Band, where he served from 1997 until the group ended their storied career in 2014. Before that, Burbridge was in the Aquarium Rescue Unit, a group founded by former wrestling manager Colonel Bruce Hampton that was known for blending top-tier musicianship with freewheeling fun.
After The Allman Brothers, Burbridge formed Dead & Company with John Mayer, Jeff Chimenti, and Grateful Dead alums Bob Weir, Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann. This summer, they embarked on their last tour.
Burbridge's latest project is Dead-adjacent: An album of eight ballads written by Robert Hunter and Jerry Garcia called Lovely View Of Heaven. You can hear his jazz influence all over the record, and I have to say his singing is on point as well. Burbridge has been performing these songs with his group Oteil & Friends.
Burbridge is usually on the hosting end of the podcast - he has his own called Comes a Time - but here he joins me to take us through the album and offer some incredible insights on the Hunter/Garcia songwriting team.

| Country star Suzy Bogguss | 07 Oct 2020 | 00:48:08 | |
The Suzy Bogguss story starts in the small town of Aledo, Illinois, where she grew up listening to her dad's Merle Haggard 8-tracks. In 1985, she got a big break when she sang at Silver Dollar City, a Nashville amusement park that Dolly Parton turned into Dollywood the next year. With Parton's endorsement, she became a featured performer at the park and earned a record deal.
Bogguss is more of a song interpreter than a songwriter - the title track of her 1989 debut album Somewhere Between is a Haggard cover - but she did co-write one of her biggest hits: "Hey Cinderella," an unconventional take on the famous fairy tale.
Speaking from her home in Franklin, Tennessee, Bogguss tells the "Hey Cinderella" story, talks about her Dollywood days, and performs her song "Letting Go."

| Amanda Brown on songwriting, touring with Alicia Keys, and The Voice | 02 Oct 2020 | 00:44:48 | |
Born and raised in a Christian family in New York City, Amanda Brown was influenced mostly by gospel music until her time at the highly prestigious LaGuardia Arts High School. After a brief stint at Howard University, she decided to pursue music full time and soon found herself on tour singing backup for Alicia Keys. Three years on the road and she was ready to pave her own path. Singing in late-night clubs in NYC she earned her chops as a performer and decided to audition for season 3 of The Voice.
In this episode of the Songfacts Podcast, we get a behind-the-scenes look at her time on the show, including the day-to-day workflow and the nerves she had leading up to her stellar performance of Aerosmith's "Dream On."
Since placing fifth on the show, Amanda has released the album Dirty Water, toured with Adele, and is set to release a new EP and the single, "From Here," at the end of October.

| Monique DeBose on Improv Singing and her "Rally Call" | 30 Sep 2020 | 00:49:36 | |
From her time improvising at UC Berkeley, to traveling the world performing and finding her voice as a songwriter, Monique DeBose has an incredible story to share. A polymath with degrees in Spiritual Psychology and Mathematics, she earned acclaim for her one-woman show Mulatto Math: Summing Up the Race Equation in America and is a prominent speaker who has done TED Talks.
DeBose has made her mark in music with songs that carry the weight of struggle and experience. Her 2018 song "Damaged Goods" looks at how our perceived faults are part of our humanity; her 2020 track "Rally Call" summons the disenfranchised to stand up and fight, because every voice matters. She discusses both of these songs in this episode of the Songfacts Podcast, and also explains how improv singing gave her an artistic foundation.
Speaking with DeBose, it's clear why she gets invited to TED Talks: her energy can fill up a room and leave you wanting more.

| Author Ken McNab on The Last Days of The Beatles | 23 Sep 2020 | 01:01:03 | |
From the moon landing to the Stonewall riots, to Woodstock and Altamont, 1969 gave the world incredible highs and pivotal lows. Through it all, the most famous band in the world, The Beatles, struggled to keep it together while also putting together some of their most treasured music.
In his book And in the End: The Last Days of The Beatles, author Ken McNab details this historic year for the Fab Four on a month-by-month account. It opens in chilly London with the infamous rooftop concert, takes us through the painstaking recording of the songs that would form the albums Let It Be and Abbey Road, and gives us an inside look at the chaotic business side of the band.
In this episode, he posits on what broke up The Beatles and explains how Abbey Road could have been very different if George Harrison got the space on the album he deserved. The book is available here:

| Kirk Hamilton of Strong Songs | 16 Sep 2020 | 00:50:18 | |
What makes a song great?
Kirk Hamilton is the guy to ask. A few years ago, a friend asked him to use his vast musical knowledge to explain why Toto's "Africa" is so special, which led Kirk down a path to his Strong Songs podcast, where he deconstructs songs in glorious detail; he's covered tunes by Michael Jackson, Fleetwood Mac, and even the Hamilton musical.
We had the opportunity to speak with Kirk about his musical education and qualifications. He also takes us on a dive into the world of video game music and lets us in on his process for putting an episode together in his home studio - it's quite the musical undertaking.
So join us for a great conversation with Kirk, who has one of the most cheerful podcast voices around, and then head over and listen to his podcast, Strong Songs.

Simon Milliman, or "Urban Jack" as he is currently known on stage, is challenging himself to write 12 albums in 12 months. As you can imagine, this doesn't leave time for revision - it's kind of like free writing, but with music. Simon is a fixture on the music scene in Portland, Oregon, where he lives with his wife, kids, dogs, and yes, chickens. Full of energy and endless creativity, Simon is relentlessly upbeat; he's one of those people who make you question how you are spending your own free time.
As Simon explains, there are a number of challenges that come with being continually creative and with making each album unique in sound and style. Here, he talks about his approach, and also discusses a couple of his past projects, including his time live scoring a film with a band that must have been playing as tight as anyone in order to hit those cues. Please check out his music below and stay tuned as there is much more to come from Urban Jack.

| Eric Victorino explains how internet killed the video star | 02 Sep 2020 | 00:50:22 | |
In 2007, Eric Victorino's band Strata toured with Sonny Moore, who later became Skrillex. Victorino could feel the musical tides shifting away from the rock band model and toward the kind of electronic music generated by DJs or virtual acts. Teaming up with Giovanni Giusti, whom he met online, Eric formed The Limousines and scored in 2010 with "Internet Killed The Video Star," a song portending this musical cybershift.
As we've learned from the coronavirus lockdown, the convenience and endless possibility the virtual workspace affords can also lead to anxiety and depression, especially in the setting of an uneasy social and political climate. As Eric explains, he has to make music these days with his own mental health in mind.
In the summer of 2020, Victorino re-fired Strata and released an aggressively melodic new tune called "Around The Bend," which he wrote under unusual circumstances with his bandmate Ryan Hernandez. In this episode, Eric talks about building a catharsis into that song, dissects "Internet Killed The Video Star," and explains what it's like going from band member to making music with someone you've never met. This interview took place as he was surrounded by California wildfires, knowing he might have to disconnect and take his family to safer pastures at any time.

| The Metallica Episode with Renée and Steffan of Metallica's Official Podcast | 06 Sep 2023 | 00:49:52 | |
In August 2023, Metallica launched an official podcast, The Metallica Report, hosted by two longtime members of their camp: Renée Richardson and Steffan Chirazi. Renée runs the band's All Within My Hands foundation and has been interviewing and covering the band since her days as a DJ in San Francisco; Steffan is a British journalist who started covering the band for Sounds in the '80s and was later poached by Metallica to run their official magazine, So What! (yeah, Metallica isn't just a band - they're an organization).
We're thrilled to have Renée and Steffan as guests on the show to glean their insights into Metallica's music and find out what's happening on the M72 Tour, where the band play two completely different shows in each city, with film screenings and other events in between. After hearing this episode, you'll get a clear understanding of what motivates the band and might even give their Lou Reed collaboration another listen.

| Julia Cannon | 23 Aug 2023 | 00:31:05 | |
Aaron Lee Tasjan, a terrific singer-songwriter who was a guest on the Songfacts Podcast in 2021, turned me on to Julia Cannon, another very gifted songwriter who also produces, sings and plays multiple instruments. Cannon is highly introverted, so her promotion is mostly word-of-mouth. Once you hear what she has to offer, you'll probably spread the word too.
"How many issues can I blame on my absentee dad?"
That's one of many questions Cannon asks on her new album, How Many. We'll start with that song, then get into some other songs from her catalog, find out her songwriting and production philosophies, and learn about her move from Alaska to Boston, where she studied at the Berklee College of Music.

| Cole Gallagher | 26 Jul 2023 | 00:36:14 | |
Our guest today is Cole Gallagher, who has said, "They say that the only way to understand the world around you is by looking within." After our conversation talking about his new EP, The Confluence, set for releasing on Aug 4, I think it is clear that Cole considers his answers before responding and certainly takes the time to observe the world around him.
At only 21 his voice sounds as if it's been around much longer. Cole is clearly a gifted songwriter, and for this record he was fortunate to be backed by some incredible musicians, including members of Jason Isbell's backing band The 400 Unit. So roll down your window and let the breeze hit your face as we get to know Cole Gallagher.

| Raye Zaragoza | 28 Jun 2023 | 00:37:54 | |
Raye Zaragoza is our guest today and we are chatting about her new album, Hold That Spirit, set for release on August 11. Listening to the album, I can tell this is an artist who is not afraid to get personal and bare her soul through her art.
Beyond talking about these new songs, this episode goes into some of Ray's more personal moments, including breaking off a wedding engagement and using those funds to produce this album, as well as her battles with an eating disorder.
I found Raye and her music to be inspirational and honest, a testament to how we are not alone in our struggles.

| TikTok sensation ROSIE | 14 Jun 2023 | 00:36:30 | |
On the show today we have one of the most fascinating success stories I have heard in a long time! ROSIE (Rosaileen Scher) is a 23-year-old singer/songwriter who got her big break from a viral TikTok post of her song "Never The 1." She gives us the inside look at the days and moments surrounding that event, and it is incredible!
ROSIE has a new EP dropping on June 23 called 5 Songs For Healing. Before our interview it was easy to tell that Rosie is a great songwriter, but after speaking with her it became clear that she is also so much more. At only 23, she has the maturity of someone much deeper into their career. Her ability to convert her life's circumstances into relatable songs that are obviously connecting with millions should help her reach her dream, which is to perform and have a positive impact on as many people as possible.

| Devon Portielje of Half Moon Run | 31 May 2023 | 00:28:24 | |
Maybe you are getting tired of me saying this, but I am so excited to bring you this episode and this amazing new music from the Montreal band Half Moon Run. Our guest is Devon Portielje, one of the three band members, all of whom sing and play multiple instruments.
Their new album, Salt, drops June 2. This album caught my ear and engaged me front to back, so I really enjoyed speaking with Devon to find out how some of these tracks came together. Whether it's strumming a ukulele on the beaches of Thailand or scraping old audio files looking for hidden gems, these stories don't disappoint. So please enjoy Devon Portielje of Half Moon Run!

| American Idol winner Phillip Phillips | 17 May 2023 | 00:37:48 | |
It's kinda crazy that Phillip Phillips is just 32. He was 21 when he won American Idol back in 2012 and released his coronation single, "Home," which played during the Olympics that year. Phillips didn't write that song but has written or co-written most of his songs since, including all the tracks on his latest album, Drift Back, set for release on June 9.
It's his first album since becoming a dad in 2019. Phillip tells us his son is both strong-willed and amazing, and he's up for the challenge. In this episode, he talks about how fatherhood and married life gave him a new perspective that informed the songs on the album and takes us back to his Idol days when he did a very memorable acoustic cover of "Thriller."

| Harpist Brandee Younger | 03 May 2023 | 00:20:13 | |
You probably don't think about the harp very often, but Brandee Younger is here to change that. She's part of a new generation of harpists, bringing the instrument to contemporary music while also honoring the heritage of harpists of the past, particularly Dorothy Ashby, who elevated the form from the '50s through the '80s.
Younger's harp can be heard on tracks by Alessia Cara, Pete Rock, Jane Monheit, Ravi Coltrane, and a mix of other artists across the musical spectrum. She's also an artist in her own right with several solo albums, most recently Brand New Life, where she reworks some of Ashby's songs and takes on a Stevie Wonder song called "If It's Magic."
On this episode, Younger talks about her musical journey (including how she discovered the harp and who lugged it around) and breaks down some songs on the album.

| The Strip Club Songs Episode | 19 Apr 2023 | 00:50:33 | |
This episode is a little different - it really comes from my endlessly curious brain. Now, I am not a regular attendee of strip clubs. Honestly, they really aren't my thing. But, they are a place where music is played, heard, and completely controls the vibe, so I wanted to talk to some experts and ask them the question that was running through my head. Why, when I think of music played in strip clubs, do I only think of two eras: the 1980s and early 2000s hip-hop?
Danny Meyers and Ilan Fong are current and former strip club DJs, respectively, and provide a professional opinion on this question of mine. The resulting conversation is an in-depth look at an industry I hadn't really thought about at all, but is quite fascinating. From balancing the demands of dancers, owners and clients to keeping up with what is indeed hot in the strip clubs (which also happens to be the name of Danny and Ilan's podcast), we take a deep dive into the music that drives this industry.

Today's guest is Gary Graff, author of Alice Cooper @75. Gary's book goes in-depth to explore 75 key moments in the history of Alice Cooper - the man and the band. It covers his early beginnings, time spent in LA in the 1960s, skyrocket successes in the early '70s, and the enduring career that followed.
Gary discuss some of these moments and also go over a few songs, including "I'm Eighteen" and "No More Mr. Nice Guy." The book is a must-read for anyone interested in Alice Cooper. The "Dying To Entertain Us" chapter, where Alice takes a macabre turn, is particularly compelling, although not for the squeamish. Please enjoy this nightmarishly delightful episode.

| Vashti Bunyan | 22 Mar 2023 | 00:38:59 | |
Vashti Bunyan didn't know her 1970 debut album Just Another Diamond Day had reached cult status until the '90s, when she first typed her name into a search engine. In those 20+ years, many listeners had not only discovered the album, but found it quite profound. In 2000, it was re-issued on CD.
The album is a signpost on the road to "alternative folk" - think Joanna Newsom, Animal Collective, and Devendra Banhart, all of whom have cited her as an influence and collaborated with her. Bunyan grabbed her guitar and started making music again. She released her album Lookaftering in 2005, followed by Heartleap in 2014. He autobiography Wayward, Just Another Life to Live, was issued in 2023.
In this episode, Bunyan talks about her remarkable resurgence and discusses some key songs from her catalog.

| Adele Bertei | 07 Mar 2023 | 00:53:53 | |
When New York City was its seediest - the late '70s - it was also home to burgeoning artistic scene that would bring some life back into the city that never sleeps. Our guest today is Adele Bertei, who was part of the action with The Bloods, the first all-female openly lesbian band on the scene. Adele later became a songwriter, with songs recorded by Sheena Easton and Thomas Dolby. Here, we discuss her remarkable life and her new book, Twist: An American Girl.

| Colin Blunstone of The Zombies | 22 Feb 2023 | 00:46:11 | |
On the show today I have the great pleasure of chatting with Colin Blunstone of The Zombies, who were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2019. If you're not aware of them by name I am sure you are by tune, as they have written some of the most familiar songs of the mid-'60s, including "Time Of The Season" and "She's Not There," which we get a fascinating story about during this episode!
Colin and the band have a new album coming out on March 31 called Different Game that we discuss as well. This was one of those conversations I wish could have gone on and on, as Colin is full of energy and a great storyteller.

| Matt Ellis of Villages | 08 Feb 2023 | 00:32:40 | |
Today's guest is Matt Ellis from the band Villages, a folksy foursome from the nether regions of Nova Scotia. Their new album, Dark Island, comes out February 17. In this episode, Matt and I talk about some of the key tracks and find out the band writes - they are certainly products of their environment.
Listening to the album top to bottom, it's clear these guys are pulling inspiration from everywhere, including American folk, Celtic, and obviously from their Canadian roots. Matt and the band are a tight-knit group who love and trust one another as creatives, which you'll hear in their songs.

| Hamish Hawk | 25 Jan 2023 | 00:50:12 | |
It's not often that I hear a new artist and get taken back to multiple eras and styles of music, but that is what today's guest did! Hamish Hawk is based in Edinburgh and has been making some noise over the last couple of years. When I put on his new album, Angel Numbers, I was taken back to the new age era of the late '70s and early '80s. Then my wife called out from the other room saying, "This sounds like David Bowie!" Quite the first impression!
Today, I chat with Hamish about the album, we dive into some of the details of songwriting, and he plays his tune "Money" live on the show for us!

On this first show of the new year I am so pleased to have Nicholas Gunty and Brian Powers, the duo who make up the singers and songwriters of Frances Luke Accord. They have an amazing new album called Safe In Sound, which is being released for your listening pleasure on February 9th.
Today we get a chance to hear how they came together as a band in college and listen in as they banter about some of their songs and how they came together. Fun fact, they don't always agree! And of course, we get the stories behind some of the tracks off of the new album.

| Third Annual Holiday Songs Special | 07 Dec 2022 | 00:39:20 | |
Hosts from across the Pantheon network talk about holiday songs - good, bad, and sometimes very odd. One host finds "Wonderful Christmastime" triggering; another found a gem by Loretta Lynn called "To Heck With Old Santa Claus." "The Chanukah Song" also gets a deconstruction, as does "Christmas In Hollis" and "Fairytale Of New York" a rare down-on-your-luck Christmas song. Another surprise: A chestnut from Weird Al Yankovic.

| "Africa," "God Only Knows," and Other Songs with Multiple Lives | 23 Nov 2022 | 00:47:42 | |
In this episode, we take a deep dive into some classic songs with Steve Baltin, author of Anthems We Love: 29 Iconic Artists on the Hit Songs That Shaped Our Lives. Baltin got his stories directly from the artists who recorded the songs, conducting interviews with the likes of Joe Perry, Brad Delson of Linkin' Park, and even had a contribution from the famously elusive Tom Waits.
As fellow song investigators, we're very impressed with Baltin's work. He does a great job tracing the trajectory of these songs and putting them into context. He posits, for instance, that "Everybody Wants To Rule The World" would be too smart for 2022 but was perfect for 1985, the "golden era of political songwriting."
Baltin also explains his process - how he got these artists and songwriters to open up about their songs.

| Jesse Colin Young of The Youngbloods | Interview | 19 Jun 2024 | 00:38:01 | |
Jesse Colin Young is a revered figure in the American folk-rock scene. In The Youngbloods, which blended folk, rock, blues, and jazz elements, widespread acclaim came from their iconic 1967 hit single, "Get Together," a song that became an anthem for peace and brotherhood during the turbulent 1960s. The song's enduring message of unity and love continues to resonate with audiences today, cementing the band's legacy in American music history.
But beyond his success with The Youngbloods, Jesse Colin Young has enjoyed a prolific solo career, releasing numerous albums that showcase his versatility as an artist. One of his notable solo works is the album "The Perfect Stranger," originally released in 1982. This album, celebrated for its introspective lyrics and rich musical arrangements, was recently re-released, offering both longtime fans and new listeners the opportunity to experience its timeless appeal. "The Perfect Stranger" highlights Jesse's ability to traverse musical genres with ease, and also showcases duets with legends such as Michael McDonald and Carly Simon.
Throughout his career, Jesse Colin Young has also remained a passionate advocate for environmental and social causes, using his music as a platform for change. His contributions to the music industry and his commitment to activism have left an indelible mark, making him a true legend in the world of folk-rock.

| The Prince Episode with Author Arthur Lizie | 09 Nov 2022 | 00:50:42 | |
Today on the show we have Arthur Lizie, who has a new book coming out on November 15 called Prince On Prince: Interviews And Encounters.
Prince is one of those artists I have loved as long as I can remember but never truly learned much about his story. Through Arthur's book I have discovered why. Prince's relationship with the press was on-again, off-again at best and he did an amazing job at keeping the mystique around his name.
I love the way this book reads with chronological interviews that give us a sense of where the artist was at particular times in his life. In this episode, we discuss some specific songs and talk about a feud Prince had with the Foo Fighters.

| Alex Forbes | 26 Oct 2022 | 01:06:51 | |
We've seen the name Alex Forbes on songwriting credits for years, going back to the '80s with "Don't Rush Me" by Taylor Dayne and "Too Turned On" by Alisha. More recently, she popped up on a great song called "Sugar My" by Jann Klose, who told us about writing it with her.
Our curiosity piqued, we invited Alex on the Songfacts Podcast to learn more, and we're sure glad we did. Alex is a student of the game and also a teacher, coaching songwriting at creativesongwriter.com. In this episode, we talk about some of her most intriguing songs (including one she wrote with Nile Rodgers) and get into a little Songwriting 201, discussing what popular songs have really effective first lines and what dance songs have lyrics that set them apart.

| Ayla Schafer | 06 Jul 2022 | 00:50:34 | |
Well I am very excited for you all to listen to today's show as we have Ayla Schafer. Ayla is an English singer and songwriter who has one of the most unique journeys we have had on the show to date.
This episode goes in depth about how music can affect us as people. As I record this intro, I am camping in the Wyoming highlands and have had a few days to reset, slow down, and clear my head of all the noise that life brings from time to time. I find Ayla's music and story run parallel to this kind of slowed-down mentality. Her beautiful melodies, soft vocal touches and spiritual lyrics remind us that we are all connected to one another and the natural world. So please, sit back, relax and enjoy this conversation with the lovely, Ayla Schafer.

| BJ Barham of American Aquarium | 08 Jun 2022 | 00:48:32 | |
Ten years ago BJ Barham and his band American Aquarium were about to call it quits. They'd been touring nationally at small clubs and had seemingly plateaued in their growth as a band. They'd written some new tunes and decided to hop into a studio with Jason Isbell to record what they thought would be their swan song album, Burn. Flicker. Die. It was not.
As BJ describes in this Songfacts Podcast episode, things changed after that album. When I press him on what he thinks happened, he points to writing songs for himself rather than trying to create something he thought listeners might want. Ten years later and American Aquarium is going strong, about to release their latest album, Chicamacomico, and start a massive summer tour with a headlining slot at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium.

On today's show we have a legendary songwriter and musician Jack Tempchin. Jack is best known for penning the songs "Peaceful Easy Feeling" and "Already Gone," recorded by the Eagles, but there's a lot more in his catalog to explore.
Most recently he has been performing with the band Mrs. Henry. In this episode, we get to hear about their collaboration "Waiting," a song that sounds and feels like a norm-defying Dylan tune. He also tells about his latest songwriting adventure where he goes to the beach and records songs completely made up on the spot.

| Lester Chambers of The Chambers Brothers, Moonalice | 27 Apr 2022 | 00:37:55 | |
Even by the lofty standards of the late '60s, The Chambers Brothers were visionaries, blending rock, gospel and psychedelia into a musical bouillabaisse seasoned with social awareness. Lester is the third of the four Brothers, who were joined by a white drummer named Brian Keenan.
The Chambers family is from Mississippi, but they formed their band in Los Angeles after the oldest brother, George, was discharged from the Army and settled there. "He went to California because he no longer wanted his brothers and sisters to grow up in a place like Mississippi," Lester says. "We got in the car one night and drove up. And, after two-and-a-half to three days we wound up in California, but it was a struggle getting out of Mississippi on the road."
They started performing in 1961 and added Keenan in 1965, the year they earned great acclaim with a performance at the Newport Folk Festival, where they went electric hours before Bob Dylan. Their first album, The Time Has Come, was released in 1967 and includes their masterpiece "Time Has Come Today," a song that still rings true five decades later. That album also includes "Uptown," a song you can see the band perform in the documentary Summer Of Soul.
We touch on all these topics in this conversation with Lester, who also talks about his latest venture, the band Moonalice.
