Are Rideshares (Uber) Safe For Solo Travelers? 8 Tips to Feel Safer
20 Feb 2024
00:11:47
We often think nothing of requesting an Uber or rideshare car these days. When I was growing up, we were warned to never get into a car with a stranger. Yet we do it all the time as a means of transportation, especially when traveling. Could we use some extra cautious steps to feel safer? YES. Here are 8 tips to ensure a safer ride.
1) Book your request through the app and make sure no one is around to potentially see your information. 2) Check your driver's rating ad reviews. 3) Share your ride/trip with a trusted friend or family member. 4) Confirm the license plate, make of car and driver's profile photo before getting in the vehicle. 5) Sit in the back seat with your luggage. 6) Stay aware of your surrounding and track your route on your phone. 7) Never share that you are traveling alone. 8) You could designate your end point a block away or somewhere else so your driver doesn't know where you are staying or going.
We all want to be efficient in our packing. But are packing cubes the answer?
Packing cubes are typically nylon or polyester material, rectangular bags with a zipper and mesh portion to let air out.
They are helpful to: 1) Organize your clothes 2) Prevent wrinkles 3) Condense your packing area by 5-10% 4) Keeps clean clothes separate from dirty clothes
TIP: Always take 1-2 empty packing cubes for dirty clothes

Are you a foodie? Do you like to experience the authentic cuisine of the country where you are traveling? Annie Sim, CEO of The Table Less Traveled, is bringing an intimate concept of food and travel together. With culinary exploration at the heart of their travel experiences, Annie Sim labels herself the CEO — Chief Eating Officer — of The Table Less Traveled. Her love affair with travel began at age 13 when her parents took her out of the U.S. for the first time. The moment she woke up in a thatched-roof hut with elephants and giraffes just steps away, everything changed and she hasn’t stopped exploring since. While spending 10+ years abroad, Annie built lasting friendships with local chefs, business owners, and friends who were “people people” just like her and open to welcoming travelers into their homes. In the spirit of coming together and exploring somewhere new, she founded The Table Less Traveled in 2015, pairing a love of travel and food with her relationships that extended outside of tourism to distill iconic experiences of global cultures and create an intimate and authentic environment to experience them firsthand. After adding virtual and interactive cooking classes to the company offerings because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Annie can now also call herself a connection expert as her team works to bring those same chefs from around the world and their global recipes straight into the kitchens of travelers, home chefs, and foodies. The Table Less Traveled transports work teams, families, and strangers to Italy, Japan, Peru, and beyond through in-person and virtual shared experiences so they can gain a deeper appreciation for destinations around the world.

23 Jan 2024
00:11:04
Being sick is no fun. But being sick in a foreign country away from the comforts of your home can feel worse.
Staying healthy while traveling actually begins beforehand by building up your immune system.
1) Reduce your stress 2) Make sure you are well rested beforehand and get adequate sleep while traveling too. 3) Hydrate- before and during your trip, especially if you will be consuming alcohol. 4) Watch what you eat-before and even maybe while on your trip. If you have allergies, get them under control beforehand and take any medications needed. 5) Purchase travel insurance.
I also use Airborne and vitamin C for immune support, before and during travels.
Concerned About Feeling Safe While Traveling? 3 Criteria To Determine Where to Go
16 Jan 2024
00:10:57
Safety as a solo traveling woman should always be on our minds, even during the planning stages.
In Episode 12, I offer 10 Safe countries that are safe for solo female travelers. https://www.buzzsprout.com/2048349/12058242
Consider these 3 criteria before picking a destination, especially as a new solo traveler.
1) Go to a place where they speak your native language. You will have one less barrier and found yourself less anxious because you are able to communicate with others easily.
2) Go on a road trip. I feel more confident when i take a road trip because it's my vehicle, I can take what I need (packing-wise) and even leave a place if I don't feel safe.
3) Go where there are lots of people. Traveling to a remote area can be challenging and create anxiety. When your destination is a populated area, you can feel safer as there are more people to maybe ask directions or questions.

There are several different Camino routes one can take and my guest today, Joy Alway, has walked many of them. Joy Alway grew up in Devon, England but always dreamed of travelling and seeing the world so studied Business Studies (Travel and Tourism) and moved into the world of tour operating, working in Paris and London. She married young and spent her twenties living and working in London and gay Paris. Her thirties and forties were spent in Geneva, Switzerland bringing up her two precious sons, fighting cancer, and organising tours to Switzerland for musicians. Her fifties have been spent looking after her father until he died, volunteering in old people’s homes, working in a hotel in France, dealing with a devastating divorce, and now walking and writing about life’s rich tapestry, and treasuring every experience that helps her evolve and grow.

Everyone loves "hacks" whether for travel or general life hacks to make our lives easier. These 7 airport travel hacks will save you time, money and reduce your stress.
1) Get TSA Pre-check status or Global Entry to save time during security check. Lines are shorter, you move through the process quicker and you don't have to remove your shoes. 2) Take an early morning flight. The first flights out are less likely to be cancelled or delayed, plus they experience less turbulence. 3) Take a picture of where you parked if you drive to the airport. 4) Take an empty water bottle. Saves you money from buying bottled water at the airport and no time wasted standing in line either. 5) Check the status of your flight before you leave for the airport in case it is delayed or cancelled. 6) Sign up for lounge access. 7) Place a designating item on your luggage, like a sticker, ribbon or scarf on the handle, especially if you have a basic color suitcase like everyone else.

4 Ways to Immerse Yourself Into A Culture As a Solo Traveler with Guest Karen Gershowitz
24 Oct 2023
00:47:05
My guest today, Karen Gershowitz, has over four decades of global exploration, and a two-time travel book author, unveils solo travel's potential as more than an alternative - it's an avenue to immerse in cultures and forge bonds.
Karen Gershowitz has been traveling solo since age seventeen, when she flew to Europe and didn’t return to the US for three years. In her career as a marketing strategist and researcher she traveled the world conducting thousands of meetings, focus groups and interviews. When traveling for pleasure, those same skills helped her to draw out people’s stories. She learned about their lives, as well as local customs and fashions and what makes them laugh. Her first book of travel stories, Travel Mania, explores the confluence of travel and life events and how travel has changed her beliefs and life direction. Wanderlust continues those stories, addressing issues readers have asked to hear more about—memorable food, people, and places she experienced in her travels. She hopes these stories tickle the travel bug in readers and set them off on their own adventures. Karen lives in New York City.
FOUR WAYS TO IMMERSIVE INTO A CULTURE:
Reading a book in public introduces opportunities for unforeseen discussions and new friendships.
Shared tables at eateries encourage engagement with local residents and fellow journeyers.
Embrace public transit to discover less-traveled regions and experience genuine culture.
Participate in classes and meet-ups to connect through common interests and gain insights from residents.

Reclaim Your Health So You Can Travel The World with Guest Paget Rhee
17 Oct 2023
00:34:22
Paget Rhee of Be Balanced Centers, shares her story about how reclaiming her health has empowered her and given her the confidence to travel and even be bolder in her business and life.
Our health can affect our travels both physically and mentally, making us question if we can even do certain activities.
As women, we are expected to do it all, but this causes stress that affects our health.
Fear is often unnecessary and never comes to fruition. Be wise though when traveling solo but don't let it hold you back or you will never go.
Balancing your hormones to get your health back will allow you to live your best life at any age, and allow you to travel the world.
www.bebalancedcenters.com To reach Paget Rhee: paget.rhee@bebalancedcenters.com
Explore the United States beautifully preserved 63 National Parks.
But before you go, do these 5 things.
1) Check the weather
2) Go to www.nps.gov website for the park you are visiting and check for any alerts or road closures.
3) Obtain any permits (if needed), and make reservations if camping.
4) Get a physical map of the park.
5) Buy an annual National Park pass if you plan to visit more than 1 park within a year. It costs $80 USD.
Consider the time of year when you visit a certain park. Listen for my list and recommendation on WHEN to visit a park based on the month of the year. This is only a sample list.
We all love travel hacks, especially when it comes to packing lighter and smarter.
1) This hack is a double bonus in that it also reduces your liquids if traveling with only a carry-on. (Refer to episode 47 for more ways to reduce liquids when packing). Soak a cotton ball with eye make-up remover, astringent, perfume, etc and seal in a ziploc bag. This will not count towards your liquids. Along those lines, soak a sponge in dish detergent or laundry detergent. Let it dry before traveling. Then just add water to use the soap.
2) Protect your shoes by using doggie poop bags (or gallon ziplocs) or a shower cap.
3) Safely travel with your jewelry by rolling up in a t-shirt. It takes up less space and conceals your jewelry and prevents it from getting tangled.

05 Sep 2023
00:15:12
What habits or routines do you do every morning or evening? Are you continuing those while traveling? We are a species that thrives on routine. Consider the routine of a school year for example.
Sleep and other daily routines often get out of whack while traveling such as sleep, eating patterns, exercise and more.
Ask yourself, what current daily(morning and evening routines) do you habitually perform? Could you continue these while traveling?
You will be a happier person on your trip if you try to adhere to your normal program.
