81. When Social Workers Invest 28 Mar 202200:43:38
What 3 things do Social Work and Construction have in common?  We both hold space for digging deep and doing hard work. We both have humans who are struggling with very human experiences. Innovative Social Workers are needed in these spaces. Adam Read is an experienced multifamily construction superintendent comfortable with managing $50-80M projects. He’s passionate about developing a workforce environment that helps the “whole person” show up each day. Adam collaborates with experts in trauma, educational neuroscience and child development to go back to the fundamentals of productivity. He is passionate about creating pathways to social justice. Fact check: In 2020, the CDC found that men working in construction have one of the highest suicide rates compared to other industries. Click here for full article. Power of Breathwork29 Nov 202100:40:42
Breathing is POWERFUL. Seriously, this episode had a few blow-my-mind moments. This week we are speaking with Emily Bunting about using breathwork for focus and for processing trauma. This is just one small part of her larger expertise of teaching social workers and helpers to embody self-care for ongoing wellness.   Here is more about Emily in her own words...  I worked in social work for 15 years in a variety of settings.  For the last 8 years I worked for Santa Clara County in California in Child Protection. Throughout my social work career, I had many bouts of burnout before I found yoga and other embodiment practices which had a profound impact on the way I take care of myself. I have become passionate about helping female social workers use holistic embodiment practices as a form of self care. I want to share my knowledge to help others avoid and cope with burnout that is so common in the social work and mental health fields. Most recently I developed a 6 week 1:1 coaching program called Social Worker Self Care Accelerator which is a program designed for female social workers to go from burnout to balance through embodiment work.   Connect with Emily  Website: http://www.emilybuntingcoaching.com/  Emily Bunting Coaching IG: emily.dexter.bunting  FaceBook: Emily Dexter Bunting _____________________ It’s Catherine here; let’s get connected and if it feels right, check out these other amazing resources that will help you in your social work career… Follow & say “Hi” on Instagram  Connect on LinkedIn RISE Directory - A national directory of Clinical Supervisors who are looking to help the next generation of Clinical Social Workers GROW. PTSD: Facts VS Fiction08 Nov 202100:56:16
As a therapist, Virginia Cruse was becoming frustrated with the rumors her clients heard about PTSD that kept them from getting better.  Why did so many of them believe that PTSD had no cure?  That they couldn’t have PTSD because they were not in direct combat?  That they didn’t “deserve” to have PTSD, or didn’t “deserve” to get better?  The answer hit a nerve with Cruse: no one had taken the time to explain PTSD to Service Members in a way that made sense. Soldiers were losing their resiliency and optimism in a culture that propagated misinformation and went against the facts about PTSD, facts that are necessary to know in order to recover good mental health and salvage important relationships. Virginia Cruse, LPC is a Licensed Professional Counselor and National Certified Counselor specializing in Military Issues and Combat-Related Trauma. She provides crisis intervention and evidence-based treatments for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Moral Injury, Depression, Combat Operational Stress, and other diagnoses. Money Tips every Social Worker Needs (even if you're broke)11 Oct 202100:45:18
If your first thought was, "I don't have a lot of money so I wont worry about this right now." This is especially important for you! Let’s be real, Social Workers are great at emotions, but not exactly known for being great at numbers and finances - for better or worse. We are not taught about finances in school and we don’t know what we don’t know. No judgement here! I’m with you. In this episode we ask a financial advisor, what are the top 3 things we need to know about money (even if i don't have much of it)? We cover: - If I don’t have a lot of money, then why would I need a financial advisor? - How do I prioritize expenses between retirement, student loans, credit card payments, and saving for life events? - Can I get financial advice with no upfront costs? Yes, do these 3 things to be prepared: Get financially organized - get those documents out of your “junk drawer” and get your financial statements into one place. Income sources, salaries, insurance information, bank account information, loans, interest rates, health insurance, home/rental insurance, etc. Know where your money is going and be as honest as possible with yourself. Go back 3 months and categorize your expenses into separate categories. Next you want to look for and identify patterns & specific spending habits that are working and not working for you. Save for Retirement, NOW. Start small then gradually increase over time to get the most benefit from compounding interest. Alex Casella, Personal Finance Professional, has worked in the financial services industry since 2009 and over those years has recognized financial literacy needs of social workers and mental health professionals. Alex has developed a comprehensive understanding of financial services through his training and time working alongside successful advisors in the financial planning industry. Micro Practice in a Macro system; Social Work on the Federal Level23 Sep 202100:33:00

Did you know we have social workers in the federal government?? No? Me either until I met this amazing social worker!

This episode we sit with Brenda Flores who reveals her diverse social work background, what she did to go from CPS worker to working with the federal government with Department of Homeland Security. What does a social worker do with Homeland Security? She talks about her role, how she copes with stress, human trafficking, and gives her personal tips on what you can do to help advance your career further.

Brenda Flores is a Victim Assistance Specialist with Homeland Security Investigations who partners with law enforcement agencies and non-governmental organizations to assist victims of federal crimes. After spending over a decade working in the child welfare and immigration arena for local child protective services, the federal administration for children and families, and citizenship and immigration services, Brenda has experienced the crisis’s, challenges, and triumphs of those needing the most help. It is not how well you master the theory and textbooks. It is how well you connect with those you are serving and communicate your understanding and empathy back to them.  Brenda has spoken at various conferences and has participated in numerous local, state and federal work groups dealing with issues ranging from child welfare to human trafficking and immigration. Brenda holds a PhD in Social Policy & Research and an MSW from Loma Linda University.

Here are her tips for you to advance your career as a new Social Worker:

“Take advantage of all the opportunities you have. If you have the time, go to it.”

“Look around and see what needs are not being addressed and what are realistic ways for you to become involved?”

“Don’t be afraid to ask or inquire further. Ask, always ask.”

Bi-racial Identity Formation12 Jul 202100:26:02

We will talk about all of this and more with Chioma Moronu, LCSW, 200RYT; Listen in to learn more! Some of my favorite quotes from this episode: "Being bi-racial and mixed race is just who we are. We don't have to pick." "You're forced to pick one or the other fights when we don't need to pick either one we can be in both fights because both fights are going against white supremacy." "We can be on both sides and fights on both sides. We can still fight against the oppression and the discrimination happening. We are not any less in the fight." What does Unionized Social Work look like?08 Mar 202100:28:07

What would a Union for social workers look like? How can you start making changes towards this for your own workplace? Listen in to hear more from Trisha and Joyce.

"I'm a Chicago native who grew up in a Union home, both of my parents are organizers. I received my Master at the University of Illinois Chicago, and I've been doing community-based medical social work ever since. In my free time I hang with my kids, and bake." - Joyce Klein

"I'm Trisha- the angry, tech-savvy Social Worker on a mission to improve the lives of our clients by improving working conditions and incomes of all Social Service Workers. I hope to one day become upwardly mobile and finally afford to move my family out of my parent's basement. I attended NEIU for my BSW and UIC for my MSW. I grew up in a town just outside Chicago in a household with one parent in a union and the other parent, without. I've seen the difference that collective bargaining can make. It's time for Social Workers to rise up to demand improvements for ourselves and better social care for our communities." - Trisha Anderson
