His honesty and wisdom are beyond his years, offering parents an inside look at what it's like for a child to not just follow a plan , but truly own their progress.

82: Navigating the Holidays While Gluten & Dairy Free with Laura Falzon09 Nov 202300:22:02

Laura worked for years in the travel industry before starting her own business as a birth doula. When Laura's oldest child needed to adapt his diet to manage his ADHD symptoms, their whole family learned to trust their bodies and heal themselves through a gluten-free and dairy-free diet, but the love of travel didn't stop, so they developed an approach to take their diet on the road and continue their family adventures around the world.

Now she shares her expertise on her YouTube channel, Five Hungry Travelers, to help families confidently travel with kids with dietary restrictions.

This episode is packed with actionable advice that will empower you to turn these holiday challenges into opportunities for growth and connection.

"I don't need to give the full run down to the full extended family. I highly recommend picking out your one or two point people who can help you out and start there."

"I specialize in helping people travel with kids with dietary restrictions, but I don't think you should do that until you've got that base layer laid."

"Try to shift your mentality to one that is not making food an event and go back to finding activities that are the event."

"Everywhere we go, food is held up as an activity, and it shouldn't be. Go have fun and move your bodies, and then go eat something."

"We don't need to knock ourselves out with every last thing being food-centric."

"Try to stick with things you already know in the new place…Do a little research on the new place."

"Make sure you show up not starving."

81: Parenting ADHD Kids Using the Collaborative and Proactive Solutions Model with Kim Hopkins-Betts02 Nov 202300:28:49

Traditional parenting methods don't often work for children with ADHD. Have you ever asked either of these questions:

Why don't consequences work with some children?

What can parents do instead of these traditional methods that don't work?

Kim Hopkins is an independently licensed clinical social worker who has specialized in working with behavioral challenged kids for more than 25 years. She has managed the clinical departments of two organizations serving youth and families in residential facilities, foster homes, therapeutic day schools, and homeless shelters.

She has been a Collaborative and Proactive Solutions, which is CPS for short, trainer since 2007, helping schools, residentials, hospitals, and parents to successfully implement the CPS model from Dr. Ross Greene. Kim is also the director of outreach and communication for Dr. Ross Greene's nonprofit, Lives in the Balance.

In this episode, Kim shares tips about how to parent children with ADHD using the Collaborative and Proactive Solutions Model developed by Dr. Ross Greene.

Key Takeaways:

[4:09] Why do some kids struggle more than others?

[6:10] Why do consequences often NOT work, and what can parents use instead?

[9:24] The first step in teaching kids lacking skills

[12:55] What parents can do in the heat of the moment (An Explanation of Plan A, B, & C of the Collaborative and Proactive Solutions Model)

[16:43] Summary of Plans A, B, & C

[17:48] The 3 steps in Plan B

[19:13] How long this system takes for families to incorporate

[22:56] Resources to help families begin using the CPS Model

[24:46] How Kim got started using the CPS Model

[26:39] Kim's top tip for parents

Memorable Moments:

"Kids who exhibit behavior in the face of problems and frustrations do so because they lack the skills not to. This is a skills deficit situation. A lot of traditional parenting techniques talk about it as being a motivation deficit situation. We don't believe that at all."

"They [consequences] don't get the job done because they're not doing anything to address skills."

"You can observe their feelings. You can observe their behavior. But it's their thought process that if you had a little glance into would really position you to better help them."

"Pouring on empathy…can really help bring a kid back to baseline."

"The durable, problem-solving, skills-teaching piece happens only proactively."

"Nothing good happens in the heat of the moment. So…let's avoid you even getting there."

"Step 1 is where you have the empathy step…Step 2 is the define the adult concern step…Step 3 is the invitation step where we're going to invite the kid to consider possible solutions with us that address what they told us in the first step and what we said in the second step."

"A good solution meets two criteria: it's got to be realistic…and it's got to be mutually satisfactory."

"Tune out the noise of all the pressure that people are putting on you….You know your child."

80: Leaky Gut with Dana Kay26 Oct 202300:30:22

In this episode, Dana Kay discusses one of the most common underlying stressors she sees in the lab work of children with ADHD and something that parents often ask about: leaky gut.

Dana Kay is a board certified holistic health and nutrition practitioner, working with families all across the USA, helping them to naturally reduce those challenging ADHD symptoms.

Learn about leaky gut, a common underlying stressor of children with ADHD that can exacerbate ADHD symptoms, by tuning in to this episode.

Link Mentioned in the Episode:

Key Takeaways:

[2:54] How Gut Health Affects ADHD

[4:59] The Role Antibiotics Play in Gut Health

[8:24] The Frontal Lobe's Role in the Body

[14:28] What is Leaky Gut?

[19:25] How Leaky Gut Affects Food Intolerances

[22:09] Summary

[22:53] What Causes Leaky Gut?

[23:50] How Leaky Gut Shows Up In the Body

[25:42] How to Correct Leaky Gut

Memorable Moments:

"All of our children's health is quite literally connected to everything that occurs in the gut."

"80% of the entire body's immune system is located within the gut, so gut health is super critical."

"What the gut-brain connection means is that, in essence, our brains are deeply connected to our guts. If our guts aren't functioning well, our brains won't be able to function well either."

"95% of the body's serotonin and 50% of the body's dopamine is produced in the gut."

"The gut and brain are constantly sending messages back and forth."

"Let's stop shooting water at smoke and start getting to the underlying issues!"

"Compromised gut = compromised brain."

"When leaky gut is present when we eat food (even the healthiest food), before the gut has had a chance to break it down, it can go through the holes in the gut in that leaky gut into our bloodstream."

"Something started the leaky gut, then the leaky gut causes food intolerances and the food intolerances continue to cause leaky gut. So in order to heal the gut, you must remove these foods or they will continue to break down the lining of the gut and you won't be successful."

"If you ever do a food intolerance test, you need to make sure that you test the gut as well. You want to see if there's leaky gut."

"One of the main reasons I recommend everyone stop consuming gluten is because it  triggers increased intestinal permeability in EVERYONE, even those who don't show an allergic response to it. And when a person has increased intestinal permeability, that can lead to leaky gut."

"Leaky gut shows its ugly head in about 80-90% of the tests that I run on children with ADHD."

"Leaky gut affects the whole body."

"The gut is connected to everything."

"Leaky gut isn't a death sentence. It's not permanent. It can be corrected, and it can be done without medication, through dietary and lifestyle modifications and supplementation."

"Diet is the foundation of any plan."

"Rome wasn't built in a day."

"Companies might not listen to our voices, but they will listen to our money."

"One of the most important things parents can do - regardless of which plan they choose to follow - is to communicate the plan BEFOREHAND and explain why it's so important."

"Safe candies are those that avoid some of the worst ingredients out there...ingredients like artificial colors (like red 40 and blue 1), artificial flavors, and of course, like I always say, those top inflammatory foods (gluten, dairy, and soy)."

77: The Modern Health Epidemic in Children with Beth Lambert05 Oct 202300:38:19

Our current environment and lifestyle choices are influencing the health of our children. In this episode of the Soaring Child podcast, we are joined by guest Beth Lambert, the founder and executive director of Epidemic Answers, which is a 501c3 nonprofit organization dedicated to reestablishing vibrant health in our children and is at the forefront of understanding and tackling the modern health crisis affecting our children.

Beth is an author, mom,  educator, and former healthcare consultant, and she has monitored and documented the escalating rates of children's chronic conditions for over a decade. She is also the creator and executive producer of the Documenting Hope project, which is a multi-year perspective research study and media project that examines the cumulative impact of environmental stressors on health and their mitigation through personalized and system based treatment approaches.

In this episode, learn more about the modern health epidemic that is affecting our children and discover what you can do to combat  it today.

Key Takeaways:

[4:34] Overview of the modern health crisis in children
[7:02] Answering the question - "Is it that we are better at diagnosing today, or are there actually more cases?"
[8:43] What is total load, and why is it so important?
[12:09] The latest research about total load
[16:20] What led Beth to this field of work and study
[19:21] The most important thing a parent needs to be successful on the healing journey
[22:14] How parents can be more proactive
[26:10] The Documenting Hope Adventures In Healing Conference
[35:00] Final thoughts from Beth

Memorable Moments:

"All of our kids with very few exceptions  - it's the vast majority of kids living in the modern industrial world - are exhibiting symptoms that didn't used to be there."

"We are looking at the sickest generation of children on record."

"Once you understand why, you can unwind it."

"We are really seeing this unprecedented change in children's health because of the way we're living."

"There's plenty of epidemiological data and research done to show that it's not JUST about better diagnosing."

"There's all these different suspected villains as to who's responsible for this epidemic of chronic illness, but the reality is, it's never one thing. The total load concept is about the cumulative and synergetic effect of all of these stressors on our kids' lives."

"The more stressors the child has, the worse the health outcomes."

"We can't let this be our children's future. Our children are not here to be sick and on medications their whole lives."

"It's all about the parent's mindset. If the parent feels defeated…you will not see any progress."

"The reason our kids are sick is because our culture is making them sick, so for you to thrive in today's world, you actually have to do things that are the opposite of what everyone else is doing."

74: HTMA (Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis) Testing with Lisa Pitel-Killah14 Sep 202300:34:18

Did you know that your hair is a window into your body and into the inner workings of your biochemistry? It provides insight into key minerals that are missing in your body and also toxic elements like mercury, arsenic, lead, and cadmium. It can help you find unique imbalances that can be the underlying stressors of many major health issues, including ADHD.

In this episode of the Soaring Child podcast, we are talking all about HTMA testing, which stands for hair tissue mineral analysis. My guest is a functional diagnostic nutrition practitioner, a board certified holistic health practitioner, an HTMA practitioner and educator, a multi-time kettlebell sport world champion, and a health, wellness, and fitness advocate.

Lisa Pitel-Killah discovered HTMA testing and chose to specialize in mineral balance after this specific diagnostic test identified the true underlying stressor of her chronic fatigue and estrogen dominance. Lisa works exclusively with HTMA and has helped thousands dig to the underlying stressor of health issues by focusing on mineral balance and a holistic approach.

Lisa is the founder of Vykon Health, which produces custom natural supplements used by health professionals, including myself, around the globe.

If you're curious about HTMA testing and how it might benefit your child with ADHD, tune in to this episode.

Key Takeaways:

[4:17] What is HTMA?

[7:08] Minerals the HTMA test looks at

[9:37] Patterns the HTMA test looks for

[13:12] How does copper affect ADHD?

[16:18] Potential sources of copper overload

[19:22] The Mineral Wheel

[22:10] Copper dumping

[24:42] How heavy metals show up on HTMA tests

[32:18] Where to find Lisa online

Memorable Moments:

"Hair tissue mineral analysis has been around for decades, and it really came to light in the 70's."

"It gives us a little bit of a deeper picture, and it brings to light things sometimes months or even years before they will show up in blood."

"It's a tissue biopsy of hair."

"When I talk about mineral balance, it's about building and supporting the foundation."

"The big 4 minerals we call them are calcium, magnesium, sodium, and potassium."

"It's all about balance."

"One of the first things to upset that balance is - guess what - stress."

"HTMA patterns are dynamic. They can change. As we start to balance things, those patterns can change."

"The first response to heavy metals is to give the body the minerals it's missing or that are out of balance because that's going to allow the body to have what it needs to do its job."

173: ADHD & Sensory Processing Explained with Michael Soria28 Aug 202500:40:41

In this episode of The Soaring Child Podcast, host Dana Kay dives into some often overlooked aspects of ADHD—sensory processing challenges. She's joined by Michael Soria, a global special education consultant and dad of a neurodivergent child, who brings over 35 years of insight and heart to the conversation.

If your child melts down in the cereal aisle or fights over wearing socks, it may not be "just ADHD"—it could be their sensory system crying out for help. Dana and Michael explore how sensory overload can mimic or magnify ADHD symptoms, and what parents and educators can do to support these children more effectively.

Listeners will walk away with a deeper understanding of the three hidden senses (vestibular, proprioception, and interoception), how to distinguish behavior from sensory triggers, and four powerful Cs—Consistency, Calm Transitions, Communication, and Compassion—for building a more supportive home and school environment.

Link Mentioned in the Show:

Key Takeaways:
[04:56] Learn about the three hidden senses often overlooked in ADHD care
[09:05] Sensory red flags at home—like picky eating or trouble finishing meals
[16:25] The power of the 95-point sensory checklist to clarify what's really going on
[22:05] Michael's "4 Cs" for supporting children with ADHD and sensory challenges
[29:38] How a custom calming space or a "comfort portfolio" can change behavior in the moment

Memorable Moments:
"What if your child isn't misbehaving — their sensory system is just overwhelmed?"

"Transitions are where most antecedents become behavior problems."

"The best activities you can do with your kids are the ones they tell you they like the most."

"Even if they don't have sensory challenges, every child benefits from calming tools."

"Teachers are experts in loving our students, and that's invaluable."

"How cool would it be if I'm having a meltdown and I open a little book and see a photo of me and my dog?"

"Knowledge is power—and so is community."

"If we do this activity at school, parents please also do it at home."

"We're not looking at the behavior; we should be looking at what caused the behavior."

"When your kid screams over socks... it might not be bad behavior."

"The feeling of shame is different from guilt. Guilt is, 'I've done something wrong. My behavior was wrong.' Whereas, shame is, 'I'm bad.'"

"There's 4 categories of behavior that sit on that shield (of shame): minimizing…blame…denying…and rage."

"We want to just accept where they're at, in that moment, without wanting to move them too quickly into reassurance."

"When that child is experiencing shame, they really need to experience us as holding the space for them to experience that."

"Vulnerability and shame…they sit together."

"Some children, in particular where there has been a developed sense of shame or poor sense of self or lower self-esteem, receiving help can be pretty tricky as well."

"You absolutely can support your child to develop a more positive sense of self."

"We can shift their trajectory. It doesn't mean they're going to be struggling forever. We can support them to develop a more positive view…of who they are."

[32:35] Additional tips for parents to teach emotional intelligence

[39:03] Where to find Stephanie online

Memorable Quotes

"Emotional intelligence actually has…26 individual competency or skill areas underneath it."

"Emotional intelligence is our ability to be aware of our own emotions and those of others in the moment and to use that information to guide our actions…and to adjust our behavior as we need."

"It's not that we manage other peoples' emotions, because we can't. But we can manage our relationship and how we show up in a relationship."

"It's kind of impossible for me to raise kids who are kind and patient and empathetic…if I myself am not kind and patient…"

"Having emotions is as much a part of being human as having a nose or an elbow or a brain that you can't see."

"Unfortunately, for so long, they [emotions] have been demonized. We think of them as silly, awkward, fluffy, signs of weakness, something to be shoved down or put away or dealt with behind closed doors."

"How can I shift my lens on these emotions?"

"I often tell parents not to take emotions personally from your kids, especially our beautiful ADHD kids, because it has nothing to do with you."

"My child's nervous system is constantly and unconsciously detecting cues -  like a radar - as to whether I'm safe and things are okay or is there a threat."

"Modeling is showing your kids how to deal with their emotions. So, how to be mad - not "not to be mad" but how to be mad."

"When I say EMF, I mean Electromagnetic Field."

"Our governments don't want us to know the dangers of this. They want us to know how great our cell phones are, but they don't want people to know about the dangers."

"We've got thousands of peer-reviewed studies going back decades linking these exposures to adverse biological effects."

"Most people think EMFs are safe, and then those that are a bit aware know about cell phone radiation but hardly anyone knows about dirty electricity, which is a huge problem."

"Children are, quite simply, more vulnerable than adults."

"The problem isn't just EMFs. It's the EMFs with the toxins with your energetic electromagnetic system."

"We first need to know about it to be able to deal with it."

"Even if you don't take action for yourself, take action for your kids."

"There are 3 ways to mitigate. First we can just turn it off…If you can't turn it off, increase the distance…And the third way is to shield."

"With these EMFs, when you increase the distance, your exposure decreases exponentially…"

"If we're going to deal with this properly, we need to UMM - understand, measure, and mitigate."

"Wires are the key. Wires are safer. Wires are faster….Everything you can do wirelessly, you can with wires better."

"Turn off your Wi-Fi at night."

70: Kryptopyrrole: One Common Underlying Stressor of ADHD in Children with Dana Kay17 Aug 202300:18:50

One of the most common underlying stressors exacerbating ADHD symptoms and affecting mood regulation is something called Kryptopyrrole. Tune in to this episode of  the Soaring Child podcast to discover exactly what kryptopyrroles are, as well as what to do if you suspect your child might have elevated levels of pyrroles.

Dana Kay is a board-certified holistic health and nutrition practitioner, two times International best selling author,  and the CEO and founder of the ADHD Thrive Institute. As a mother of a child with ADHD, she knows firsthand the struggles that come with parenting a neurodiverse child and the freedom that is possible once parents learn to reduce ADHD symptoms.

Dana has been featured in Forbes and on Fox and CBS, and various other online media. She has also been a guest at multiple parenting and ADHD summits and podcasts. She has already helped over 1000 families find freedom from ADHD symptoms so that children with ADHD can thrive at home, at school, and in life.

Memorable Moments:

"In this week's episode, we are going to talk about one of the most common underlying stressors affecting children with ADHD, and that is kryptopyrrole."

"My son used to have explosive anger, anxiety, poor tolerance to emotional stress, irritability. And I could go on and on. All of these symptoms are related to something called Pyrroles."

"People with pyroluria have been found to have exceptionally low levels of both vitamin B6 and zinc."

"Pyroluria is commonly linked to ADHD, autism, dyslexia, anxiety, depression, Down's Syndrome, schizophrenia, learning disabilities, bipolar disorder,  and even alcoholism."

"In extreme cases of pyroluria, there are severe mood swings and even violent behavior."

"Some people with mild to moderate pyroluria can have a quick improvement within a few weeks of increasing zinc and vitamin B6. But others with more severe pyroluria it can take upwards of 3 - 12 months to balance those levels."

"The number one thing contributing to our children's ADHD symptoms is inflammation."

"The World Health Organization (WHO) ranks chronic inflammatory diseases as the greatest threat to human health, and these diseases are being driven by inflammation in the body."

"Pyroluria may contribute to some of our children's ADHD symptoms. If it is at play, it results in a dramatic deficiency of zinc and vitamin B6. It can cause a wide range of emotional and other symptoms."

[21:33]  How to safely detox

[30:13] Where to find Dr. Carlin online

Memorable Moments:

"We live in a toxin-filled world."

"Different children's bodies react to those toxins in different ways. If we pay attention to their symptoms and don't judge them or punish them or medicate them, but pay attention and think, 'What could be causing this? What is the source of this?'…Everything can change."

"Our bodies have a natural system/way of detoxifying themselves."

"When they have these toxin exposures, it's causing inflammation in the body, and inflammation is going to cause more symptoms and that's going to impair the detoxification system even more."

"As long as the source of the toxins you are still sitting in it, you can't get it out….Lower inflammation in general by lessening the exposure."

"You can help support their body's ability to naturally detox….And you don't need a doctor to do this part for you."

"You want to calm the system down, lower the inflammation, get a little detox going, and now we can go deeper if needed."

"Number 1 - clean the diet and the lifestyle. Keep those chemicals away as much as you possibly can and expose them to nature."

"You control what they eat...They need nutrition for the pathways to work correctly…Everything that they eat should be nutrient dense."

68: Frequently Asked Parenting Questions & Answers with Ashley Gobeil03 Aug 202300:37:20

It can be very challenging to parent children with ADHD. In this week's episode of the Soaring Child podcast, Child and Family Therapist Ashley Gobeil joins the show to answer some of the most common questions she gets asked by parents of children with ADHD.

Questions such as…

1. How can I get my child to do X or stop doing Y?

2. How can I explain dietary changes to my child?

3. What are some ways to improve routines in the home?

4. How can parents deal with meltdowns/tantrums?

Tune in to hear her answers to these frequently asked questions!

Key Takeaways:

[2:53] Question 1 - How do I get my child to do X or stop doing Y?

[9:08] The short-term versus long term goals of parenting

[10:47] Question 2 - How do you explain dietary changes to a child?

[19:31] Question 3 - What are some ways to improve routines in the home?

[28:30] Question 4 - How can parents deal with meltdowns/tantrums?

Memorable Moments:

"If these kids could do well, they would. If they can, they will."

"Look at the behavior differently."

"For kids specifically with ADHD, we know their nervous system is really hyper-sensitive."

"Our child often can't control what they're doing."

"The aim of that is to simply leave your child with the experience of feeling seen, heard, soothed, validated, and just acknowledged for all parts of themselves."

"We are actually the container for our child's nervous system."

"When our mindset shifts, that's going to guide our actions, and it's going to guide how we approach it."

"Children learn about their experience of the world through our experience of what we think their experience of the world is."

"Play is one way that children actually soothe their nervous system."

"If we can ground ourselves in compassion and empathy, that's going to drive how we respond or react in those meltdowns."

"If you feel like you're running out of resource, it's okay to take a break."

"Be your child's external regulator. When they can't regulate themselves, we know from neuroscience, they need to borrow your nervous system in that moment. So if you can stay present, they're going to use your breath, your heart rate, your tone of voice to calm themselves. And that's going to help them feel safe and that's going to decrease the fight or flight."

If you'd like some healthy school lunch ideas, make sure and tune in to this episode!

Key Takeaways:

[3:55] The first step to getting the school on board with dietary changes

[7:07] Why it's so much better to send a school lunch than to eat in the school cafeteria

[7:36] Ideas of what to put in the lunch box

[9:46] Quesadilla recipe with Mango-Cabbage Slaw

[12:13] Elements for a balanced lunch box

[16:06] Additional ideas for lunch boxes

[18:44] How to avoid buying school lunches

[21:03] Important mindset shifts for parents

Memorable Moments:

"One of my least favorite mom duties is packing a school lunch."

"You really want to build a relationship with the teacher and with the school when it comes to managing the whole cafeteria."

"The best place to start is by talking to the teacher. Let her know about the changes your family is going through and let her know that you really need her help to stay on track."

"A simple conversation with the right people can make a world of difference."

"You're going to get so much more nutrition from that lunch that you're sending than anything that comes off of a cafeteria tray in most places."

"When you start to pay attention to what you're eating, you start to notice all of these places where you can make some really good changes."

"Lunch doesn't always have to be a sandwich. It can actually be tacos or pasta, overnight oats, or things like that."

"The best thing I think that anybody can do is to make a list or a chart of all the different food groups..so your proteins, your vegetables, your fruits, and grains, and add all of your favorite things to that chart so that you have a list to always go back and refer to. And you can build your lunch off of that list."

"My number one tip for this is to get the kids involved."

"Not only does the planning make this process easier, but my child is happy."

"I could not let ME be the reason my son was not getting better."

66: Mindfulness Practices for ADHD with Dr. Christopher Willard20 Jul 202300:34:19

Mindfulness and meditation can be beneficial for children with ADHD, as well as for anyone in the family. But what's the best way to get started, and how can we make mindfulness practices enjoyable for children so they actually want to participate?

In this week's episode of the Soaring Child, Dr. Christopher Willard joins the show. He is a clinical psychologist, an author, and a consultant based in Massachusetts. He's spoken in 30 countries, and he has presented at two TEDx events. He is an author of 20 books, including Alphabreaths, Growing Up Mindful, and How We Grow Through What We Go Through. His thoughts on mental health have been featured in New York Times, The Washington Post, mindful.org, cnn.com, and many other places. He also teaches at Harvard Medical School.

Tune in to this episode to discover how mindfulness can benefit you and your child with ADHD.

Key Takeaways:

[4:11] Why Dr. Willard first became interested in mindfulness and meditation

[7:40] How breath is a superpower

[11:37] Benefits of mindfulness that are not always talked about

[15:40] How to make mindfulness more fun for kids

[21:13] How often Dr. Willard exposed his own children to mindfulness

[26:13] What to do when visualization is more difficult for someone

[29:51] How adults can bring mindfulness into their daily lives

[32:31] A challenge to the listeners

Memorable Moments:

"If we can regulate our breath, we can regulate our body…If we're regulating our body, we're regulating our nervous system. Our brain is the biggest part of our nervous system. And then we're regulating our impulses, our attention, our emotions, all of these things that everybody struggles with, but kids with attention issues and executive function challenges really tend to struggle with."

"Just by shifting the way that we breathe, we actually can shift our attention and shift gears and meet the moment for what's required of us."

"If your computer's not working, what do they say? Hit the reset button. It works 90% of the time. We humans have a reset button for our brain, and it's in the bottom of our lungs."

"I know how to create stressed out, miserable students who are unfocused. You just surround them with stressed out, miserable distracted parents and teachers and adults… If we want our kids to be well regulated and present and focused and mindful we need to surround them with adults who are  doing this."

"Mindfulness is contagious. Focus is contagious. Calm is contagious. Self-regulation is contagious."

"Finding these ways to keep ourselves well-regulated…that's actually more important than saying to your kid, 'Go do some breathes'…because then they're learning it through modeling, and they're learning it experientially."

"This is at least as important -  if not more important -  for parents and caregivers as it is for the kids themselves."

"What matters with mindfulness is not that you know 20 different ways of meditating but that you know 1 or 2 that are going to work for you…and a few of those that you can share with your kids."

65: Tutoring Students to Find Their ADHD Superpowers with Ian Siegel13 Jul 202300:46:20

Having a neurodiverse child can be challenging, especially in regards to school and learning. After thousands of hours working one-on-one with students, Ian Siegel realized that many students have lost sight of what makes them so special with a unique capacity to learn.

Ian employs an unconventional but extremely effective approach to excavating the incredible learner that exists in each student he works with. He is the CEO of Streamline Learning and the creator of the iSavant assessment.

In this episode of the Soaring Child podcast, Ian and Dana Kay discussed some of the challenges of the traditional classroom for neurodiverse students. Ian answered the question, "How does ADHD affect a students' ability to take a standardized test, and what can parents do to help their students be successful with tests, homework, and learning as a whole?"

Key Takeaways:

[3:20] Common challenges Ian has noticed when tutoring neurodiverse students

[7:47] Ian's research into brilliance and neurological distress

[10:15] Eye-opening research about neurodiverse students' brilliance

[15:19] Strategies to unlock a students' brilliance

[23:45] Common problems neurodiverse students face with schools

[27:46] How ADHD affects a students' ability to take a standardized test (and what parents can do to help their students)

[30:48] How parents can help students with homework

[34:36] 1:1 tutoring versus classroom learning

[45:15] Where to find Ian online

Memorable Moments:

"What I'm seeing is not even kids who are struggling to get A's. That's not the problem. It's more struggling to accept themselves."

"I'm not convinced that we really know how brilliant kids are at this point because we're only seeing the effects of their environment…of institutions like school that I simply think do not do the job, especially for neurodiverse students."

"Once we start to really pay attention to environmental factors, especially with students who are neurodiverse, there's this incredible bend in how students can transform to really get in touch with their brilliance."

"The kids who are the most brilliant are often the most distracted, the most anxious…"

"A lot of these students who have so much capacity are fundamentally inhibited by the fact that their brains are under fire."

"All negative things in your brain can be explained by a reaction to your environment. It's not you. It's not you at all."

"You've been judging your child and yourself within the framework of an institution that doesn't get the job done."

"Let's change our neurological environment so that they can work."

"If they're behaving in negative ways, that's communication. They're letting you know something is not right with the environment potentially."

"If you don't really give that strong message of self-acceptance, then the percentage of time their brain will be devoted to, 'Am I okay?"…and then either falling into distracted, anxious, or depressed patterns as a reaction to it….it's crazy."

"We are leaving people - kids - really vulnerable in this world by not actually having them integrate what they learn."

"Invite your children to learn by learning about them."

"One thing I noticed about having your brain on fire is that it limits your ability to really stay connected to other people."

"Brilliance comes in many forms: emotional intelligence, straight up IQ, insane memories, perceptual abilities…People are not thinking broadly enough."

Could your child's ADHD symptoms actually be caused by something else entirely—like undiagnosed pediatric sleep apnea? In this compelling episode of The Soaring Child Podcast, host Dana Kay is joined by Kirk Huntsman, CEO and co-founder of Vivos Therapeutics. Together, they unpack the often-overlooked connection between sleep and behavior, revealing how disrupted sleep patterns—especially obstructive sleep apnea—can mimic or even contribute to ADHD symptoms in children.

Dana and Kirk explore the biological and developmental reasons behind sleep-related misdiagnoses, warning signs parents should look out for, and new, non-invasive treatment options that go far beyond medication or surgery. If your child still struggles with focus, energy, or meltdowns—this episode is essential listening. For today's episode of The Soaring Child, we discuss the first FDA-authorized video game for ADHD - Endeavor RX.

My guest serves as the chief medical officer of Achilles, where he's responsible for driving Achilles' clinical research and will continue to validate the efficacy and safety of Achilles Endeavor RX video game treatment for ADHD.

Dr. Kollins spent more than 20 years on the faculty in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Duke University School of Medicine, where he maintains an adjunct faculty appointment. He has published over 200 scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals.

Dr. Kollins has been ranked among the top 100 psychiatry faculty members in the US and also served as principal investigator on more than 50 industry funded clinical trials, so he knows his stuff.

Tune in to learn more about Endeavor RX, the FDA-authorized video game treatment for ADHD.

Key Takeaways:

[5:00] Why providers are still using the same methods to treat ADHD as they used years ago

[8:05] The science behind Endeavor RX and how it helps kids with ADHD

[12:40] Which ADHD symptoms are helped through this treatment

[20:26] Side effects of Endeavor RX

[27:30] Plans to expand authorization to older children and adults

[30:03] How Endeavor RX is different than other forms of screentime

[33:54] How Endeavor RX is often prescribed

[35:33] How well insurance is currently covering Endeavor RX

Memorable Quotes:

"The prototype for Endeavor RX…when given to aging adults…their cognitive performance turned back the clock."

"This is a treatment. This is not a video game. It's a treatment that's sort of disguised as a video game."

"We're very excited…We have high confidence that this treatment is impacting and improving attention."

"One of the big challenges that we face as a company is trying to change awareness and educate. You're not going to see the same kinds of changes that you'll see if you start a child on medicine. It's not going to be as abrupt…but there are changes. This is a relatively slow process."

"I saw one antidote where a parent said that they didn't tell the teacher that they had started on Endeavor and after about 2-3 weeks, the teacher said, 'I'm not sure what's happened here, but this child is now doing XYZ much better…'"

"It's really important to remember that Endeavor RX is a treatment."

"The overall numbers of side effects and adverse events that are reported are tiny."

"This is another option, and it's a very safe option that we know works, and so it should be in the conversation."

"Not all screentime is created equal."

"This is a brand new form of treatment that's never been out there before."

She also writes regularly  for ADDitude Magazine.

If you have a child with ADHD who struggles with executive functioning, homework, or time management, this episode of the Soaring Child podcast is full of great, actionable tips!

Memorable Quotes:

"Our executive functions…are not fully developed until we are in our mid-twenties, so every student…shows up with some deficit."

"Time blindness means you do not know where you sit in time…You might know what time it is, but knowing what time it is does not mean you understand or feel it."

"For a child or student or even an adult to truly be able to manage time, you have to be able to see it."

"You need to make time as visible as possible. You need to externalize it everywhere your child is, so that they can internalize it."

"Your child needs to see time move."

"Put a clock - an analog - in every room that your child spends time in."

"Your kids live in two worlds. They live in the now…and then there's the not now."

"Every single thing has to line up in your child's day to make homework happen."

"If you have a child who has any kind of challenge, the amount of energy they have to put out compared to a kid who is maybe more neurotypical is like 20 times more…They are starting from a deficit."

"I get them moving. That is my secret sauce."

"Movement helps to lay down learning. Movement helps the brain not to strain. Movement helps us be less distracted."

"Every kid shows up to the table with their own homework preferences and personality."

"Most do not get the wiggle room to do things the way that works for them…Give them as much choice and control as we can."

"The start is what is the hardest, so if we can separate the task from the setup, we've actually built the bridge to get started."

Free Tapping Resource that is mentioned in the episode: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IF_0Y-mexbY

Key Takeaways:

2:42 - What is EFT?

4:21 - How EFT works

8:56 - The main tapping points

9:39 - How different points affect different parts of the body

10:55 - Who can do tapping and how it affects various conditions

12:34 - How long a tapping session lasts

21:55 - How to use tapping with children

25:16 - Free tapping resource

Memorable Moments:

"EFT actually stands for Emotional Freedom Technique. Most of us have known it as tapping. What it's doing is, we are tapping on end meridian points."

"We tap on these end meridian points…and what that does is, it sends a calming signal to the brain."

"It's actually been shown, just doing one round of EFT, your levels of cortisol can go down 24% versus traditional talk therapy is 14%."

"The tapping basically neutralizes that negative emotion."

"The beauty of tapping is really accepting yourself where you are."

"Just by tapping, you are decreasing stress in your body."

"What's really key with the tapping is we get really specific to an event. What did you hear? What did you see?...We want to clear all of the 5 senses of that event."

"Allow them to use their words and feel the emotions…Feel it, tap while you're doing it, and allow it to release. Release the negative charge."

In today's episode, Dana Kay takes some of that overwhelm away by sharing her top four supplements for kids with ADHD. These are supplements that have not only worked for Dana's son with ADHD, but have also worked for many of the families she works with.

Tune in to this episode to learn 3 pitfalls to supplementing for ADHD, as well as the top 4 supplements for ADHD.

As a special bonus, for the next two weeks, from June 8-22, 2023, you can grab Dana's top 4 supplements for 20% off!

Click the links below to grab Omega Thrive, Shine Thrive, ProThrive, and/or MindThrive for 20% off using the code 20OFFTOP4 at checkout!

Key Takeaways:

[2:36] Pitfall 1 - Blind Supplementation

[5:18] Pitfall 2 - The Miracle Pill

[7:01] Pitfall 3 - One Size Fits All

[8:49] Top Supplement 1 - Omega 3 Fish Oil

[10:24] Top Supplement 2 - Probiotic

[18:25] Top Supplement 3 - Magnesium

[21:53] Top Supplement 4 - Vitamin D

Memorable Moments:

"Blind supplementation doesn't work for most families."

"Supplements can be very effective and healing, but supplements can never be the be-all-and-end-all for ADHD symptoms."

"You can't supplement your way out of a poor diet or a body riddled with inflammation."

"One supplement that works well for one child might not have much of an effect on another child, or it might even have a negative effect."

"For supplementation to be most effective, it needs to be tailored to each individual child."

"We've got a deficiency of Omega 3 and we've got an overload of Omega 6, and with that comes inflammation, and that can cause ADHD symptoms in children."

"Research shows that taking probiotics can help reduce inflammation, help detoxification, reduce anxiety, improve mood, and also protect the body against the damaging mental and physical effects of stress."

"Not all probiotics are considered equal. I like using probiotics that reseed the gut rather than putting in strains that go away as soon as the supplement is stopped."

"I had no idea that there was a supplement that could be as effective as a prescription medication!! This is HUGE!"

"Research shows that children with ADHD and anxiety often have low magnesium levels, and using supplements can have that great calming effect."

"My absolute favorite for children with ADHD is Magnesium L-Threonate because it can cross the blood-brain barrier and deliver magnesium directly to the brain, which, as you can imagine, is really helpful for kids with ADHD."

"One of the best natural ways to get more Vitamin D is to get outside in the sunlight! But as this is not always possible, a Vitamin D supplement can be very beneficial as well."

"Unfortunately, not all supplement brands are created equal."

[12:50] Additional advice for grandparents

[15:46] Carolyn's advice for parents who are nervous about talking to grandparents about the changes they want to make

Memorable Quotes:

"With healthcare, medication is the quick bandaid…That medication isn't going to fix it. It's just going to be a temporary bandaid and then when something else comes along, you'll get something else."

"Our pantry is stocked with things that they eat, so when they come, it's there…It's become part of our routine to have it available for them here."

"He used to have these outbursts that would literally bring me to tears, because I knew that wasn't him. It was heartbreaking to see that."

"He now knows what's good for him and what isn't."

"He's definitely a totally different child."

"We as grandparents don't have those children every day. Some of us might. But be as supportive and encouraging as you can of your family. It does work. It is going to make a difference."

"It's not a bandaid. This is a fix."

"Don't give up. Stick with it. Support your family. Do your part when they're visiting with you."

"Sit and explain to your grandparents what you're dealing with and what you're going through and then how you're going to help them help you support the process."

58: Positive Discipline Strategies with Casey O'Roarty25 May 202300:33:31

This week on the Soaring Child, my guest Casey O'Roarty and I are exploring Positive Discipline Strategies.

Casey is a facilitator of personal growth and development and for the last 15 years, her work has encouraged parents to discover the purpose of their journey and provide them with tools and a shift in mindset that has allowed them to deepen their relationships with not only themselves but also their families.

Casey is a Positive Discipline lead trainer and coach. She hosts a podcast, parenting summits, and live and online classes. Her book, Joyful Courage: Calming the Drama and Taking Control of Your Parenting Journey, is a must read for parents!

In this episode, Casey shares tips for connecting with teens, strategies for parents to help them maintain their sense of peace, and so many more golden nuggets for parents! I absolutely LOVE the mantra she shared - "fiercely committed, loving detached."

Key Takeaways:

[4:54] Positive Discipline - what it is and how it benefits the relationship between the child and the parent

[10:45] Personal growth for parents as they begin implementing Positive Discipline

[14:45] Tips for parents of teens for keeping peace in the home

[19:21] The Mantra - Fiercely Committed, Lovingly Detached

[24:56] What surprised Casey the most about the teen years

[31:38] Where to find Casey online

Memorable Moments:

"Positive discipline is based in Adlerian theory, with the core concept being that human behavior is motivated by our perception of belonging and significance."

"Most of us were raised with the idea that we can reward and consequence our kids into doing the right thing. This is totally different."

With "relationship centered parenting…you will foster a space and an environment and a relationship that is going to allow your kids to move through the hard things…to move through the rebellion…to move through the risky behavior and still have a place to land."

"It has created the dynamic where my kids will come to me and say, 'I need to tell you something.'"

"We are the sum of the experiences and the relationships that we have had over our lifetime."

"Did I show up the way I wanted to show up? What was the mistake that I made? I'm going to own that with my kid."

"Finding peace… is a moment by moment experience."

"Everything is temporary. The highs last for a while. The lows last for a while. But there's always a swing back."

"Those hard places are where our kids get to develop so many tools."

"Screens are not inherently bad, based on the amount of time you are using them, but it's just how are you using them?"

"Don't throw the kitchen sink at your teenager. Just look at, what are my child and teenager's biggest challenges right now, and then, how can I address that?"

"It will get better, even though it is difficult right now."

"Finding your own support network is huge."

"It's not about you. You're not the problem, but you can be part of the solution."

53: Building Better Brains for ADHD with Lorraine Driscoll20 Apr 202300:36:07

Think back to when your little one was an infant. Do you remember when he or she first wrapped their little hand around your finger or when that startle reflex was so strong that they would even wake themselves up if they weren't wrapped tight? Both of these things are primitive reflexes.

In this episode of the Soaring Child, Lorraine Driscoll explains how retained primitive reflexes and brain imbalances can affect children with ADHD. Discover the three most common retained reflexes that children with ADHD often have, as well as how parents can integrate brain training technologies and techniques to help build better brains.

Lorraine Driscoll is a brain integration therapist, nutritionist, and the founder of Building Better Brains. As a former teacher, she's passionate about optimally developing the brain so kids can thrive.

Key Takeaways:

[2:48] How Lorraine got into this work

[5:27] Retained primitive reflexes

[7:54] Brain imbalances

[8:14] Potential causes of retained reflexes or brain imbalances

[12:03] 3 common retained reflexes that children with ADHD have

[16:15] The role that brain imbalance plays with ADHD

[20:46] Where to start

[24:03] Brain training technologies that can be helpful for kids with ADHD

[28:48] How this is different than neurofeedback

[29:56] How brain imbalances & retained reflexes affect picky eating

[31:59] What parents can do TODAY to start building better brain connections

Memorable Quotes

"There are a ton of reflexes that infants have, and their purpose is #1  to keep them alive...and then further on in infancy, to assist with gross and fine motor development."

"These reflexes definitely serve a purpose but they should disappear by 3 years of age or sooner, depending on the reflex. And if they don't, basically they create a block."

"With primitive reflexes, they can either be mildly retained or severely retained. And generally, the more reflexes that are retained and the more severely retained, the more severe the condition."

"Most kids who have true ADHD or even autism spectrum typically have an overdeveloped left brain and an underdeveloped right brain."

"The left brain is the gas, and the right brain is the brakes."

Start "with very specific exercises that very much mimic...the movements they would have done when they were an infant in order for that reflex to be integrated."

"The research shows it's best when it's done morning and afternoon or evening."

"If you do nothing else, the best thing you can do is get your child moving."

"Kids who have ADHD where they have poor vestibular function can either sit still or they can pay attention."

Love languages quiz - https://5lovelanguages.com/quizzes/love-language

Key Takeaways:

[3:12] How ADHD impacts siblings

[5:23] What parents can do to support the child in the family who doesn't have ADHD

[8:09] Love languages

[9:31] Other ways parents can support siblings

[13:28] How parents can speak to siblings about the other child's ADHD

[16:30] How to manage ADHD behaviors in the moment

[19:18] How the conversation changes as children get older

[22:17] The importance of consistency in this approach

[24:24] How parents can promote a more positive relationship between siblings

Memorable Moments:

"Behaviors really do communicate their emotional experiences."

"We've really got to trust our parenting instincts. If it feels like I'm not giving my child enough attention, they might be feeling that way too."

"If we can get a bit of a picture or an understanding of, 'What's the siblings' experience of what's happening in the home? What's their feeling?' Then we can go, 'What's their underlying need?' And then we can respond and support them in that need."

"I often like to start with that verbal observation of what I am seeing between the siblings. And then you do the Name it to Tame It."

"We do want that sibling to feel heard, seen, soothed...But we also want them to be able to hold compassion and empathy for their sibling as well."

"Rather than...'How do we hit with the discipline or consequential action," going, 'what do I want to teach in this moment?'"

"There's the content of what they're saying, but what's actually underneath?"

"You are building a new picture of how your children experience you."

"A really important focus on how we create that sibling relationship is...that parent-child relationship...When that child who is struggling feels connected to, feels heard and understood by the parent, we're in a much better place to build the foundations of that positive sibling relationship."

51: ADHD & Genetics with Kashif Khan06 Apr 202300:49:52

How do genes affect ADHD and other similar disorders? Is there an ADHD gene? What can we do to optimize our genes so that we are living our best lives possible? Why does data privacy matter with genetic testing?

Tune in to this episode of the Soaring Child Podcast to learn the answers to each of these questions.

Our guest today is Kashif Kahn, a Chief Executive Officer and founder of The DNA Company where personalized medicine is being pioneered through unique insights into the human genome. He also is the host of the UNPILLED podcast. His measure of success is not in dollars earned, but in lives improved.

Listen to this episode to learn how ADHD and genetics interact with one another.

If you are interested in learning more about DNA testing and you want to reduce your child's ADHD  symptoms naturally, schedule a free call with our team using this link - https://bit.ly/3X5ZVvT

Key Takeaways:

5:42 - An explanation of genetic predispositions

8:58 - How the science of genetics has changed over the years

14:28 - Is there an ADHD gene?

18:40 - The 3% of people who actually have ADHD

25:49 - An explanation of the 3 buckets within epigenetics

29:18 - What people need to know about data privacy with genetic testing

34:46 - How to manage genetic expression

44:09 - How genes can cause toxins to affect one person in a home and not others in the home

Memorable Moments:

"A gene is an instruction that tells your cells what to do."

"Even in ADHD, we don't see one profile that points to it genetically. There are multiple, and none of them actually cause a clinical ADHD. They all cause behavior that gets diagnosed as ADHD but isn't in fact that at all."

"The majority of what we see in mood and behavior issues, including ADHD, people don't innately have. They're actually wired for some form of superpower and they've been put in the wrong context where they're not using that superpower."

"In the science of genetics, there are genes that they point to that are ADHD genes. The challenge is, that's the 2 or 3% who innately have something…97% of our kids who are struggling were not born with the condition."

"Our DNA is not ready for the way that we live…It's no wonder everyone has ADHD and anxiety. We don't have it. We have neural inflammation, we have the wrong context, we have overstimulation, we have overdepolyment of neurochemicals, which leads to all of these outward behaviors."

"There are 3 buckets epigenetically: environment…nutrition…and lifestyle."

"Pick the right lifestyle choice based on what your genes are saying."

"The body is designed to handle toxins…It's not designed to handle the current reality and the amount we have to handle."

50: ADHD from a Psychiatric Perspective with Dr. Achina Stein30 Mar 202300:40:14

In this episode of the Soaring Child, we are looking at ADHD from a psychiatric perspective, covering topics such as how a child is diagnosed with ADHD, common underlying stressors, dietary changes compared to medication, risks of stimulants, and so much more!

Dr. Achina Stein is a physician, board certified psychiatrist, and has been in practice since 1994. She's also a certified practitioner of the Institute of Functional Medicine, a distinguished fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, and an energy healer. She's the co-owner of her own private practice called Functional Mind.

She is the bestselling author of the book, What If It's Not Depression: Your Guide to Finding Answers and Solutions and has been interviewed about her pioneering work as a functional medicine psychiatrist on many podcasts and summits.

Tune in to this episode to learn about ADHD from a psychiatrist's perspective.

Key Takeaways

[3:29] - What led Dr. Achina Stein to her current work

[10:40] - What is the DSM, and how is it created?

[14:23] - How are children typically diagnosed with ADHD?

[19:55] - Common underlying stressors/root causes

[21:35] - The importance of healthy digestion, protein, and healthy fats for children with ADHD

[23:03] - Dietary changes compared to medication

[24:49] - The Burp Test

[28:49] - Risks and side effects of stimulant medications

[32:52] - Key aspects of treatment plans that are sometimes missed

Memorable Quotes

"My goal for my patients is never to have someone suffer on a long term basis."

"A diagnosis is only needed if you need accommodations, especially for ADHD…or if you want to go on medicine."

"What the DSM is…it's the Diagnostic Statistical Manual of Disorders where a group of people have come together...They are all deemed experts on some level…And then they decide how a diagnosis is made. And none of these diagnoses are made through any objective data."

"There are certain disorders that are considered normal in some cultures that are considered abnormal in other cultures."

"The problem with these tests and with the DSM is that it actually says zero - nothing - about cause."

"Look at habits. I think many functional doctors miss that."

"I see a bigger change in people with a dietary change than I do with medications."

"I would say 60% of people don't tolerate medications as well, or respond to medications when medications are tried. I see a much more robust response to change in diet."

"All mental health disorders basically have the same root causes."

"Everyone is going to have a genetic predisposition to something but you can flip those genes, because it's not the genes that matter so much…it's more the expression of those genes. And you can turn off those bad genes and turn on those good genes through foods and through stress management."

"Focus on those foundations of health."

"I like to call it the SEEDS of health. S for stress, E for environment and toxins. Other E for Exercise, D for diet, and final S would be sleep."

"Sometimes it can be overwhelming, and that's where I think it's important to start by remembering that there are some things we have some control over, and there are some things that we don't have a ton of control over."

"There are toxins in the water. There are toxins in our food."

"When speaking about this to families, it's really important to focus on those things where you do actually have some control."

"Every decision I make, I put some thought into it…what am I exposing my children to? Every little bit makes a difference."

"50% of kids or so have a chronic disease. At this point, 70% of adults do. Most are on medication."

"There's no logical reason not to think about prevention, and there's no logical reason to not think about the root cause of illness. But it's difficult in modern medicine because of the way the system is set up."

"The system is not going to fix the problem."

47: Vision Challenges & ADHD with Dr. Bryce Appelbaum09 Mar 202300:36:05

On this week's episode of the Soaring Child, we are exploring an interesting topic - neuro-optometry and the correlation between vision problems and ADHD.

Dr. Bryce Appelbaum is a pioneer in neuro-optometry, passionate about unlocking life's potential through vision. His expertise includes reorganizing the visual brain post-concussion, remediating visual developmental delays interfering with reading and learning, and enhancing visual skills to elevate sports performance.

Dr. Appelbaum is on a mission to change the way the world views vision. He believes there is more to vision than just 20/20 eyesight and has developed programs to retrain the brain and eyes. Dr. Appelbaum has been featured on the front page of USA Today, in The New York Times, and in many others.

In this episode, discover how vision therapy can help children with ADHD.

Key Takeaways:

[3:26] What is vision therapy?

[6:23] How hidden vision problems can mimic ADHD behaviors and dyslexia

[13:35] What is the focusing system?

[16:00] What to do about convergence insufficiency

[21:48] Some exercises to help the eyes

[22:04] The 20-20-20 rule

[25:57] What are the bands for the different ages?

[29:57] Specific supplements that help with eyesight

Memorable Quotes:

"I like to think of eyesight and vision as separate entities."

"All visual skills are learned skills, and they're skills that are either learned well or not learned as well as they could be."

"We learn skills through our life experiences, especially early on. We learn how to integrate both sides of our body, and we learn how to develop the motor foundation from which we then learn how to use our visual system."

"Dyslexia, by definition, means difficulty reading words."

"Convergence insufficiency is essentially the brain's ability to use the outside muscles of the eyes to point in the same place to see something single."

"Treatment options should always start with, 'Can something be done with glasses to make life easier and to make things more comfortable to close the gap in terms of where they're operating compared to where they want to be?'"

"It's basically brain training for the eyes, which should be individualized and should be based off of all the different metrics that are identified, and should have a nice mix of home therapy with office therapy, where there's reinforcement of what has been learned."

"95% of people I've seen in the last two and a half years have had an increase in symptoms or problems that they're no longer able to compensate for, based on this huge introduction of visual stress."

45: CBD Oil and ADHD with Liz Carlile23 Feb 202300:25:21

On this week's episode of Soaring Child, we are  exploring an interesting topic - CBD oil and ADHD. CBD is one of the most highly researched plants and has been shown to be beneficial for a variety of body systems. In this episode, we discuss how it can benefit children with ADHD, as well as their caregivers.

Liz Carlisle is the host of the Motherhood Unstressed podcast. Through the show Liz converses with brilliant minds to empower and uplift her audience of women all over the world to live with less stress and more purpose and joy.

Liz is interested in the importance of non-negotiable self-care for mothers informed by personal experience. All of these pieces of the puzzle culminate into the brand Motherhood Unstressed, which believes that life is meant to be rich with purpose, cherished with loved ones, and wholeheartedly enjoyed.

Key Takeaways:

[3:01] What is CBD oil?

[3:40] What is the difference between CBD and THC?

[5:37] How does CBD oil help balance that system?

[6:44] Is CBD legal?

[9:24] Does CBD help ADHD symptoms?

[13:33] How did Liz get into CBD?

[22:08] Why does quality matter in CBD?

Memorable Quotes:

"CBD is short for cannabidiol and is simply one molecule out of many in the cannabis plant. I think a lot of people hear cannabis plant, and they immediately think of the marijuana plant, but the cannabis plant is kind of like the overarching plant that you can split into the marijuana plant or if it contains less than a certain amount of THC in it, it becomes hemp."

"An interesting point is that we actually make our own cannabinoids. That's why it's called the endocannabinoid system because we produce cannabinoids, and we actually produce it during exercise, during sleep, all of these healthy practices, but most of us don't produce enough."

"It is legal in all 50 states because again, it's coming from the hemp plant. It's not a marijuana plant so you're not violating any federal laws."

"I tell my clients that when you start taking CBD, up the amount that you would normally do in the morning. You could take some in the afternoon and then at night so that you build up that reserve in your system."

"The only side effects I could imagine is if you took way too much, you would probably want to lay down and take a nap."

"When I first started Motherhood Unstressed, I was doing a little bit of mommy influencing and that kind of stuff. And so a CBD brand reached out to me to promote their product."

"Living intentionally to me means starting your day with the intention of like, I know, stuff is going to get crazy. That's the nature of life. But I'm not going to let these outside circumstances overwhelm me."

"I can't control anything else…but I can control how I react to it."

"When a stressful situation comes, centering yourself back into that intention, you know, can be so, so powerful."

"Think about what that does in someone's life, when you go out into your day, and you're not constantly reacting to things."

"CBD is an amazing plant for so many reasons. But it is a great plant for pulling heavy toxic metals out of the ground. They actually used the hemp plant to clean up Chernobyl…So, quality matters."

In this episode of the Soaring Child podcast, 2 dads chime in and share with us about some of the challenges, obstacles, and hesitations they felt when first learning how to reduce ADHD symptoms naturally with their children.

"Is this going to work? Can we trust this?"

"I don't want to spend the money on 'another thing' that may or may not work!"

"I don't want my child to feel different."

In this episode, Dave and Keith shared their personal experiences in helping their children on this journey and offered advice to both moms and dads tuning in who might be nervous about starting the natural journey to reduce ADHD symptoms.

Key Takeaways:

[4:02] About Dave and Keith

[8:21] ADHD symptoms their children were experiencing

[16:12] Hesitations about natural solutions for ADHD

[23:08] The common hesitation - "It won't work!"

[29:48] The common hesitation - "I don't want to waste the money!"

[31:16] The biggest obstacles Dave and Keith faced and how they overcame them

[45:35] Their advice for moms who are nervous to discuss natural solutions with their partners

Memorable Moments:

"Everything that seemed 'traditional' didn't work for us and didn't do anything for us, so it just became the time that we said, 'Let's try something more non-traditional.'"

"The cost of your program - which seemed like a lot upfront - was less than every other thing combined that didn't work."

"It doesn't really matter the cost. I'm trying to help my son be a better version of himself."

"If we medicate this child, we might gain something, but what are we going to lose?...It works sometimes, but other times it causes more problems than it solves."

"I looked at this girl every day and saw the struggle she was having. To me, there was no price on trying to figure that out. It was just that simple."

"I didn't want her to feel different because of something we were trying to do to help her."

"One of the things people are going to be worried about going in to this is that their kids are going to feel deprived. I can tell you 99% of the time, our daughter does not feel deprived."

"We had a lot of stuff to pull out of her diet, but it's worked. We've managed it. After a while, it didn't seem scary. It was just the everyday routine."

"Like any other thing you are doing as you're raising a child, if you're doing it as a team, it's probably going to turn out better."

"Don't say to your husband, 'Do this for me.' Do it for the child. And if there's anything you wouldn't do for the well-being of your child, then shame on you. You definitely got in the wrong business of being a parent."

42: Balancing the Brain with Dr. Titus Chiu02 Feb 202300:48:31

Did you know brain symptoms are messengers of underlying imbalances in the neural networks that make up the brain? Balancing the brain is possible using simple at-home brain training exercises, and the most important first step is getting to the underlying root cause of brain symptoms.

Functional Neurologist, Dr. Titus Chiu, joins us on this episode of the Soaring Child podcast and shares some simple at-home exercises families can begin using today that can make a big difference.

Dr. Titus Chiu is a number one best-selling author, award-winning international speaker, and functional neurologist that specializes in natural brain health solutions. Dr. Chiu empowers people with the holistic tools, tips, and cutting edge resources needed to heal their brains and unlock their fullest potential.

Key Takeaways

[3:18] What is a functional neurologist, and how does it differ from a conventional medical neurologist?

[12:52] The 3 pillars of brain health

[14:59] 2 ways to support the physical pillar of brain health

[18:00] The top-down approach versus the bottom-up approach to supporting brain health

[19:08] Importance of recess for children

[24:04] Simple sensory and movement-based exercises that can support brain health

[30:00] The difference between normal and optimal

[39:21] Electroceuticals

[40:55] Possible reasons some of the exercises mentioned might not have worked in the past

Memorable Quotes

"I'm always trying to answer the question, 'Why? Why do they have these symptoms?'"

"There are these really subtle findings...As a functional neurologist, I really explore those nuances. And those almost always are the keys to why that kid is having those symptoms in the first place."

"We might do very similar tests, between what a functional neurologist does and what a medical neurologist does, but the way I interpret it makes all the difference…The second biggest difference is the treatments."

"With functional neurology, honestly, the sky's the limit with the tools."

"To really get to the root cause and heal the brain naturally, you have to look at the brain holistically in what I call the 3 pillars of brain health: the physical, chemical, and emotional."

"One of the number one missing pieces I see when it comes to ADD or ADHD or even just brain health in general is the physical pillar of brain health."

"Each of the different pillars respond to different intervention or therapy."

"How can we expect a child to think and reflect on their behavior…when they don't have the actual bandwidth to do so? They don't have the building blocks."

"The number one intervention was recess. The more kids have time to go outside and play…that's what actually grew their brain cells so they then had the capacity and bandwidth to sit down and focus in math class. "

"The number one reason why we have nervous system is to navigate the physical world."

"We can use the senses to intentionally identify the weak areas of the nervous system and then strengthen them with these different types of simple exercise."

"We're not looking for normal or average. We're looking for optimal."
