| 123: The Impact of Infections & Toxins on Dopamine & ADHD with Dr. Miles Nichols | 29 Aug 2024 | 00:44:07 | |
What is dopamine? How does it affect ADHD symptoms? What types of things can affect dopamine levels in the body? In this episode of the Soaring Child podcast, Dr. Miles Nichols joins the show and dives deep into how dopamine functions in the body and the impact that infections and toxins can have on both dopamine levels and ADHD symptoms. Dr. Miles Nichols is not just a functional medicine doctor; he's also someone who has walked the path of health challenges and emerged with a determination to help others find their way through similar struggles. He has a focus on Lyme disease, mold illness, gut health, thyroid dysfunction, and autoimmunity. Dr. Nichols has turned his personal battles into a professional crusade to uncover the underlying causes of these conditions. From founding the Medicine with Heart Clinic in Colorado to establishing an institute for educating doctors in functional medicine, and authoring two pivotal books, Dr. Nichols has dedicated his life to this mission. Link Mentioned in the Show:Thriving with ADHD Book - adhdthriveinstitute.com/book Key Takeaways: [4:52] Often overlooked factors that contribute to attention challenges in children [9:46] Factors that create antibodies against dopamine receptors [16:10] How can environmental or infectious agents contribute to altering the function and even sometimes structures in the brain? [23:58] What is dopamine and how does it play into attention issues? [29:38] How sugar affects dopamine [32:20] What lab testing is available to assess brain function, dopamine, and structure changes that could contribute to attention issues? [37:03] What are some initial steps parents can take at home based on this information? [41:26] Where to find Dr. Miles Nichols online Memorable Moments: "There are some triggers for neuro-inflammation that may play a bigger role, I think, in attention issues than a lot of people appreciate." "It is not uncommon at all that I find - especially in children and adults with attention issues - that there are antibodies…against dopamine receptors…There are some known triggers that can cause…the immune system to start to attack dopamine receptors." "Without even changing dopamine at all, we can change the way in which dopamine impacts mood, focus, and drive." "It appears as though glycine has a calming effect on the brain. It also seems that it has an effect for temperature regulation, it can improve sleep…" "For many children and for many people struggling with attention issues is that higher doses of glycine - paired together with looking at causes of toxins and infections and other things like that - can be quite useful and I don't see it being talked about very often." "Dopamine is what we call a neurotransmitter or sometimes it's referred to as a hormone…Neurological effects and attention effects are part of it. Pleasure is associated with dopamine." "In some ways, we can think of dopamine as part of the reward system of the brain." "Attention is money when it comes to consumerism and business." "It takes more and more stimulus to drive the motivation and pleasure." "Because the levels of dopamine are so variant, going up and down, it's less valuable to get a snapshot in time level of dopamine. There are precursors to dopamine and there are nutrients and we can look at nutrient testing. I find nutrient testing to be quite helpful." "If diet isn't dialed…if sleep is not there…if there's overuse of. electronics..some of these basics. I don't recommend going into the nuances of detailed labs when those basics haven't been addressed first." "A next layer after diet and stress and sleep and electronic use and stimulation… a next layer that's really helpful for people is to go into gut function…And a sinus swap I like too." | 24: Common Obstacles When Implementing Dietary Changes with Andrea Daigle | 22 Sep 2022 | 00:29:15
On this week's episode of Soaring Child, we take a look at the challenges to keeping your kids eating the right foods. Andrea Daigle is a regular on the show and is a board-certified holistic health practitioner and a member of the team at the ADHD Thrive Institute. She specializes in coaching families through making diet changes through food choices, meal planning, and getting buy-in from not just the kids, but also the extended family. The most important step is clear communication on a daily basis. Have family discussions about what specific steps need to be taken and what the long-term goals are. Have the kids get involved with meal planning, and take them grocery shopping. Get your whole family in the habit of reading labels to see which foods are healthy and which foods aren't. Be sure to comment on the positive changes as they occur. When grandparents try to give your children sweets and sabotage all your efforts, offer them a healthy bag of treats for their house instead of the ice cream and candy. Encourage them to offer other "bonuses" like trips to the park or a shopping spree at the dollar store. Eating healthy from a young age is a great way to raise awareness about nutrition. Your kids will develop a lifelong understanding of ingredients and nutritional value even as they become adults.
Key Takeaways: [5:04] Common obstacles to changing diet in kids [6:13] When your partner isn't on board with dietary changes [9:40] Getting the rest of the family to buy in to the changes [12:29] Stressing the positive changes through communication [13:56] How to get the grandparents on board with dietary changes [18:19] How to handle birthday parties [21:26] How to handle trips to the neighbor's house [23:18] How to handle eating during the holidays

Memorable Quotes: "It is so important to set aside a time where you and your partner can just be together and start a discussion, really talk through what's going on and what needs to change. Really be mindful and talk through it together." "When we started this journey with my son, my goal was to be able to wake up in the morning without dreading what mood my son would be in for that day." "For my son, what I found really helpful was getting him to understand why we are doing what we're doing." "I started very, very slow. I would swap the old bread with the new bread and take these baby steps. And when my son's behavior started improving, that was when I could really have a conversation with him." "The best part about it is my kids actually prefer the cupcakes that we bring over to the ones that are at the party now." "Talk to your neighbors and let them know your child has dietary restrictions. Most of them are very supportive of this. Give them a whole bag of safe treats they can keep in their pantry."

| 23: Picky Eating with Katie Kimble | 15 Sep 2022 | 00:33:57 | |
On this week's episode of Soaring Child, we take a look at the challenges parents face when it comes to getting their kids to eat right. How do you make nutritious foods appealing to those picky eaters? Katie Kimble is a picky-eating expert and the national voice of Healthy Kids Cooking. She is also a blogger, former teacher, and mother of four kids. Katie points out that the biggest obstacle is that parents are not teaching kids to cook. It's important to spend time in the kitchen with your kids and even take them to the farmer's market to show them the variety of foods out there. One of the first steps is to wean them away from traditionally favorite foods, like macaroni and cheese, pizza, and pancakes. Put a wide variety of foods on the table, especially those that are low in gluten, dairy, and sugar. Don't provide snacks too close to dinner time, which will lower your kid's willingness to try new things. Put out a vegetable tray when kids get home from school and are hungry, or start dinners with a healthy, veggie-filled soup first. Some children may have never learned how to chew meat properly or eat crunchy vegetables, and there could be issues going on with their gut health. An occupational therapy evaluation might be helpful. And remember, sometimes it's not about the food but rather the relationship to the parent and their reactions. Parents should keep a "poker face" when serving healthy foods to their picky eaters and not engage in a power struggle to eat. Using positive language is also important when exposing your child to new foods, while putting lots of healthy options on the table.
Key Takeaways: [7:13] Common complaints from parents with picky eaters [7:54] Getting away from too much gluten and dairy [10:23] How to serve healthy snacks [12:09] Incorporating vegetables into your kid's diet [12:57] The dangers of pre-chewed food and difficulty to chew meat and crunchy vegetables [16:38] How to avoid power struggles at the dinner table [18:45] How to keep a poker face when introducing healthy foods [23:25] Getting kids in the kitchen to prepare foods [26:05] Why it's important not to hide the vegetables [28:46] Keeping your child sitting at the table

Memorable Quotes: "Our generation is generally uncomfortable in the kitchen. No one is teaching their kids to cook." "If kids have not had a lot of experience and practice chewing crunchy things and real meat, they literally might not know how to chew and swallow correctly, which is mind-blowing." "We've got to make sure we're not entering into those power struggles because when we dig in our heels, they do the same thing." "One of the most powerful ways to help kids build the relationship with food is to completely take away any expectation to eat." "We've got to get them involved in the kitchen, at the farmer's market, choosing those foods, washing the vegetables, learning how to tear lettuce. All of those exposure points are getting them closer to potentially interacting with the food in their mouth."

| 22: A Successful View of ADHD with Chris Haddad | 08 Sep 2022 | 00:47:13 | |
Please note: This podcast includes words or language that might be considered coarse or offensive to some listeners. On this week's episode of Soaring Child, we take a look at ADHD from the perspective of someone who's had it. Chris Haddad is considered one of the best direct response copywriters in the world, as well as a best-selling author of the book, The Language of Desire. He's also overcome several mental health challenges, including ADHD and bipolar disorder. Chris shares his story of feeling tortured in his head all the time and not being able to emotionally regulate. He teaches students they've got everything they need inside of them to understand everyone around them, because we are all just human beings in pain and share so many of the same emotions. He teaches those with ADHD that it's not their fault and that there's nothing wrong with them. It's just how their brain operates chemically. He helps them understand they can be very successful financially and professionally by overcoming guilt and focusing on the positives. Many children with ADHD are quick thinkers, witty conversationalists, and have lots of energy. Many kids think they're being ostracized by others when in reality, they're ostracizing themselves. It's not that their brains are inferior; they're just different. Chris points out that a lot of the most brilliant people in the world have had ADHD. Acceptance and a feeling of respect for those with ADHD is also important. Chris's advice to parents with children struggling with ADHD is this: Love them for what they are and not what you want them to be. There's nothing wrong with them, and make sure they know that. They just have a different kind of brain. His advice to kids with ADHD is to be kind to yourself.
Key Takeaways: [10:20] How Chris's teachers discovered he was really smart [10:44] Challenges of high school, college, and youth [13:19] Chris's experience at Burning Man Festival [18:20] Chris's full mental breakdown [19:50] How society judges people with ADHD [21:39] Chris's relationship with his brother [26:58] How Chris handles his ADHD and mental challenges today [30:43] How Chris stumbled upon his superpower of copywriting [41:57] Advice for children with ADHD

Memorable Quotes: "People ask me why I'm good at what I do and why I'm good at the empathy side of things particularly. And I think it's just because with ADHD and bipolar, it heightens everything." "It was always a joke that I was ADHD for most of my life, but I would never go to a psychiatrist or get diagnosed or get meds or anything like that. And I spent most of my youth thinking I was lazy, thinking there was something wrong with me." "The biggest thing I learned was mental health issues are not a moral failing. A lot of kids who have ADHD go through life thinking it's their fault, that there is something wrong with them or they're not trying hard enough. All of that stuff is just crap." "Just because you're dealing with ADHD, bipolar schizophrenia, or whatever it is, yeah it's hard. It is really, really hard, but you can still reach a level of what people consider success, financial or otherwise. You can have an impact on people."

It's imperative as a parent to learn how to effectively observe your child. | 16: Neurodevelopment with Dr. Aimie Apigian | 28 Jul 2022 | 00:45:10
As parents, we want the absolute best for our children, but it's hard when our child is not confiding in us for important events that may have a significant effect on their behavior. What seems like a minor issue for one may seem like the sky is falling for another, so we should definitely be paying more attention to how our children react to certain situations. In this episode, Dr. Aimie Apigian shares why we're in an epidemic of overly anxious kids and adults, how we need to redefine what trauma actually is, how trauma therapy differs from traditional therapy, and more. We also talk about how traumatic events can be passed down from the mother's nervous system to the child's and how neurodevelopment plays a huge factor in ADHD and other mental disabilities amongst children. Dr. Aimie is a Board-Certified Preventive Medicine physician, speaker, and founder of Trauma Healing Accelerated, LLC, Family Challenge Camps, and host of Bio-Optimize Summit. Today, she is here to talk about all things trauma and how to properly deal with it instead of finding ways to suppress it.

| 15: Chiropractic Care and ADHD with Dr. Brian Stenzler | 21 Jul 2022 | 00:35:26 | |
On this episode of Soaring Child, we had a conversation with Dr. Brian Stenzler. Brian is a Chiropractic Doctor and author. He is also co-founder of Dream Wellness and has operated numerous wellness centers in New York and California where he has helped thousands of families achieve their health and wellness goals. There are many gems in this episode regarding chiropractic care and ADHD, but the main ideas are how negative stressors deeply impact the nervous system, how chiropractic care helps regulate those stressors in the spine which is where the nervous system flows, SEMG scans to see where the misalignment in your child's spine may be, and more. We also discuss what is the appropriate age to start chiropractic care and the 5 essential keys to living a long and healthy life. Brian is truly a masterful chiropractor who has taken his craft to the next level. Spine misalignments can have detrimental effects on our health, so it's very important to get care for your child as soon as possible if they have been diagnosed with ADHD or other mental disorders. If you want to learn more about the keys to healing the spine and nervous system, be sure to pick up his book Dream Wellness: The 5 Keys of Raising Kids with a Lifetime of Physical and Mental Health, available anywhere books are sold! Here is the link to find a Chiropractor that uses the technology discussed in the episode https://insightchiros.com/
Takeaways: [3:41] What types of stressors negatively impact the nervous system [7:14] What age is good to start chiropractic care [9:26] How chiropractic care impacts the function of the nervous system [15:54] SEMG scan to see misalignment areas [21:30] What goes into the healing plan with chiropractic care [29:00] DREAM – Diet, Relaxation, Exercise, Adjustment, and Mental Wellness
Where to find Dr. Brian Stenzler:
Memorable quotes: "A child would need to be realigned when they're not in alignment. So if it's at birth during the birthing process, that's when it should happen. Or if it's three months after birth, that's when it should happen." "And that's why it's good to have a chiropractor in your health team. A kid is not going to tell you 'hey my neck hurts', or 'I have a headache'. A baby is not going to be able to communicate that." "We live our lives in the nervous system, everyone of us. It doesn't matter if you're a day old or a hundred years old. Every organ, every muscle, every gland, every tissue, every single cell in the body knows exactly what to do, when to do it, and how to do it because the brain tells it so." "We always let the parent know we're not here to treat any disease or condition. We're looking to see how the nervous system is functioning." "As a chiropractor, the way that I practice is I never base where I was going to adjust based on the symptom, I did it based on what I found to be out of adjustment." "More times than not with ADHD, it's almost always the atlas bone, the top bone of the neck and the axis below it. those are almost always the ones involved… and sometimes just by adjusting the atlas, the rest of the spine will follow." "So the course of care is going to be determined by the severity of the subluxation pattern, how long have they been out of adjustment for, what is their lifestyle like, what is their commitment… we have some kids that may need 2 or 3 times a week, some kids that need once a week… all depends on what it takes to reset that nervous system." "One of my mentors used to talk about rehabituation rather than rehabilitation… we want to create new habits for not only lifestyle but for the muscles to settle into their current place."

Lab testing "is that really valuable tool to look beneath the surface and identify specific challenges with that gut or other areas that may be contributing to ADHD." "We as parents hold the key to our child's nervous system until they are 18 years old. So they actually borrow our nervous system to regulate themselves." Dana Kay Resources: 🔗WEBSITES:

| 13: Essential Oils and ADHD with Jodi Cohen | 07 Jul 2022 | 00:33:59 | |
On this week's episode of Soaring Child, we had a conversation with Jodi Cohen. Jodi is a Functional Practitioner, best-selling author, award-winning journalist, and founder of Vibrant Blue Oils. In this talk, we dive deep into the topic of essential oils and how they can help treat kids with ADHD. Jodi discusses the many different types of oils and their intentions, the different ways to smell or consume oils, and how to choose the right oil for your child. Many times, we don't get the right amount of oxygen or stimuli in the brain when our nervous system is under attack. So simply applying some oil around the nose will calm our nervous system down because we know that smell is deeply correlated with memory. Jodi mentions that kids love scents. However, for those who don't, there are other methods that can help ease their stress, like applying some oil on their hands or feet. She says that kids love it so much that they'll have their oils in their backpack ready just in case their emotions get the best of them. Tune in to find out more on the correlation between essential oils and ADHD!
Takeaways: [4:58] Jodi's personal experience with ADHD [9:41] What essential oils can help with ADHD [11:38] Your child's nervous system can be in the wrong gear [15:35] Different ways to apply and consume oils [19:55] How to instruct kids on how to use oils during school [22:53] Jodi's oil blends and their intentions for kids with ADHD [25:32] Essential oils that are good for moms and adults [26:47] Understanding cortisol and its effect on stress
Where to find Jodi Cohen: https://boostthebrainbook.com/
Memorable quotes: "One of the challenges with ADHD and anything related to different areas of the brain, is that it is super hard to get anything into the brain because it has a great security system." "The more you can kind of center yourself and ground yourself using oils like vetiver, cedar wood, frankincense, lavender, things that are kind of rooted in the earth." "Especially if you have a squirmy little guy who doesn't necessarily like the smell of oils but will let you rub their feet. That's a really great place to start. If you had to pick one, I would say vetiver or frankincense." "Out of all the ways that you can use oils, putting them on your skin, especially if they're deluded, is the least harmful." "Smell is correlated with memory, so we just teach them… when your heart starts beating really fast, you can either teach them to apply the parasympathetic behind their earlobe, or you can just say, this is your happy smell." "It starts in your brain. Your hypothalamus tells your pituitary to tell your adrenal glands to release this stress hormone, cortisol, which gives you kind of the energy to deal with stressful situations." "Some of the moms that were skeptical are like, my kid always has it in their backpack. You know, it must be working. If something helps you, you don't forget to use it." "I don't recommend using oils with kids that are under 2 years old just because they're so little and oils are so powerful."

| 12: Getting Your Child the Proper Testing with Piper Gibson | 30 Jun 2022 | 00:22:48 | |
On this episode of the Soaring Child podcast, we had a conversation with Piper Gibson. Piper is a Board Certified Doctor of Natural Medicine, Holistic Nutrition, and Micronutrient Specialist. She is also a mother of a diagnosed child and walks us through her tumultuous yet amazing journey. We dive into the symptoms of tics, main drivers of inflammation, nutrigenomics testing, and how we can change the influence of our genes. Piper puts a strong emphasis on getting the proper testing done for your child in order to really decipher what is causing their neurological disorder. Testing can be expensive, but she also discusses what people can do to make it as cost-efficient as possible. The food our child eats and the environment in which they live has a lot to do with how they act. It can also be genetic, which is not something that is talked about often.
Takeaways: [3:29] Connection between tics and ADHD [4:35] Symptoms and dangers of tics [7:28] Main drivers of inflammation [8:52] What influences our genes and how we can change them [12:32] What is nutrigenomics [14:44] Tests for people with a limited budget [17:12] There's no one-size-fits-all diet [18:40] Importance of maintaining dietary changes

Memorable quotes: "When we talk about inflammation, it's not just, oh I got inflammation in my pinky finger. It's really systemic, perhaps our whole body." "It's really a movement disorder and most symptoms happen facially. People are scrunching their faces and a lot of kids are jerking their necks or clapping their hands or rapid eye blinking." "Your environment plays a big role in how your body is going to function." "Really using the right test from the start and getting the right answers from somebody who knows how to analyze them is going to be worth any extra investment that you are going to make." "My first test would be a food sensitivity test just to really refine the diet." "I think that a huge part of the process for my clients is that it teaches their children how to listen to their body."

As a teacher trainer, she holds a big responsibility in training teachers how to properly work with kids with ADHD and other disabilities. We dive into topics such as what the first steps are in teaching how to help with emotional kids, understanding key elements of working memory, and the importance of using simple steps when teaching. Above all, patience is the most important component of working with emotional kids. Dealing with ADHD can be tough, so it's very important that parents maintain a close relationship with their child's teacher to make sure they are following the proper steps.
Takeaways: [4:21] Understanding working memory [5:38] What teachers do to break down steps in teaching [9:37] The emotional side of ADHD [13:06] Explaining the social side of ADHD [19:51] How to get a child to stay in their seat [22:22] Why movement can be helpful to any kid or adult [25:16] Steps parents should take if their child's teacher is not teaching effectively
Where to find Cindy Goldrich: email: cindy@ptscoaching.com
Memorable quotes: "The first thing I want teachers to understand is what it's like to be this child. What it's like to be this child in the classroom." "Whether the teacher is a kindergarten teacher or a middle school teacher or a high school teacher, I think it's really important for them to have that understanding so that they can work more fairly with the student." "One of the first things I do is help them understand executive functioning for all people, because we all have executive functioning." "When people ask me what I do for a living, I say I manage parental anxiety. I help teachers calm their class down." "I really help teachers and parents understand how to empower their students so they feel like they have a role and a responsibility for what's going on in their lives." "What I think teachers need to do is teach everybody how the brain works, and that some people's brains get more activated when they move." "They actually found that chewing gum for some kids will help them do better on a test."

| 10: The Game-Changing Tool for Kids with ADHD with Dr. Roseann Capanna-Hodge | 16 Jun 2022 | 00:33:37 | |
On this week's episode of the Soaring Child Podcast, we had a conversation with Dr. Roseann Capanna-Hodge. Dr. Roseann is a Connecticut Certified School Psychologist, Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), and Board Certified Neurofeedback Provider (BCN). We discussed the importance of the very complex tool for treating kids with disabilities called neurofeedback. Research has actually shown that neurofeedback is far more effective and safer to use than psychostimulants, which are more than likely to have a side effect. Neurofeedback is a process that changes the brainwaves in a child's brain using measurement and reinforcement. People are wary of changing the electrical movement in their child's brain, but research has shown that neurofeedback provides an abundance of benefits. Dr. Roseann explains how the procedure works and how it has been under major scrutiny by medical scientists and professionals.
Takeaways: [1:14] What is neurofeedback [8:52] Targeting working memory for neurofeedback [20:55] How neurofeedback is effective for kids with ADHD [23:41] Why care providers are not sharing this information [29:10] At-home neurofeedback
Where to find Dr. Roseann Capanna-Hodge: Tiktok, Youtube, & IG: Dr. Roseann Facebook: Dr. Roseann Capanna-Hodge
Memorable quotes: "It's based on operative conditioning. That when you give somebody a reward, they are more likely to repeat that behavior. And the brain is the same; it learns it." "So that's neurofeedback. You just reinforce the brain for changing from an unhealthy to healthy brainwave, and it's very possible and it's lasting. You can directly target very specific regions." "The brain then creates a new set point, a new homeostasis, and it's able to function at a higher rate outside of the neurofeedback session on its own." "I was like, this is amazing. I haven't slept, you know, because my baby was up, and I could just do this neurofeedback in my frontal lobes, and I can feel alert and I can feel good." "If anything in this podcast is opening your mind, to other possibilities, that nutrition and nutrients are the foundation to build the brain. And sometimes those things alone can rectify things." "There's so much amazing research of kids with ADHD getting neurofeedback, and we know that it improves inattention, we know that it improves impulsivity, and we even know for kids that are moody or anxious, that it can improve those kinds of components." "Why aren't primary care providers sharing that diet has to be the foundation? The diet feeds the brain. And then when you can reduce the inflammation in the body, bringing in therapies like neurofeedback to really optimize that brain, why isn't that, you know? "Since 2012, the American Academy of Pediatrics says neurofeedback is a level 1 intervention, the same as psych meds… but pediatricians are not telling parents that."

| 09: The Importance of Teachers & School Counselors with Haley Luckie | 09 Jun 2022 | 00:30:08 | |
On this week's episode of the Soaring Child podcast, we had a wonderful conversation with Haley Luckie. Haley is a school counselor and knows the importance of the connection between parents with kids that have a disability and their teachers and counselors. Parents need to be extremely attentive with the people that are around their child the most. Haley dives into topics like the duties and benefits of a school counselor, how often they meet with kids on an individual basis, 504 plans, and how to help kids struggling with homework. She also explains what a pyramid of interventions is and how it is tiered to cater to a child's specific needs. We as parents need to be aware of not only our child's actions but ours as well. We can either be healing our child's issues or making them worse. Haley speaks about not overusing the word "no", how not to approach our child's issues in a judgmental tone, and the ability to redirect our kid's attention. Learn how to help your child thrive at home and in school!
Takeaways: [2:51] Partnering with your child's teachers and counselors [7:25] The benefits that a school counselor can provide [9:10] How often a counselor meets with kids on an individual basis [12:48] Pyramid of interventions [15:20] How a family can obtain a 504 plan [16:57] How to help ADHD kids with homework [21:21] How to help kids succeed at home and school [26:03] Nonverbal over verbal
Memorable quotes: "A teacher is not trained for extremes, whereas a school counselor is much more trained for challenging behaviors." "The primary thing that a counselor usually supports is individual counseling to build your child's toolbox of skills such as calming down, waiting their turn, developing and maintaining friendships." "Academically, tier 2 is re-teaching on grade-level standards, which a lot of our kids with ADHD need." "A 504 plan can support a child with any type of disability; it's meant to kind of level the playing field for a child with a disability." "You can actually write a 504 plan based on the disability as long as the symptoms are present and they impede academic progress." "Because our kids do struggle with inattention a lot of times, they miss some really valuable instruction." "Kids have a major power bucket, and we need to fill that as often as possible… the more often you give them choices, the more often you fill that power bucket." "Validate your kids when you can. We overuse the word "no" as parents and educators, and that should really be reserved more for situations that are dangerous or really bad for our kids." "Kids become dependent on hearing the words if we talk them through everything." "When our kids get older, we kind of forget the power of redirection… sometimes we just have to get their mind to something else."

| 08: From Overdoser to Overachiever: The Story of Brendan Vermeire | 02 Jun 2022 | 00:30:30 | |
On this episode of the Soaring Child Podcast, we had a very informative conversation with metabolic health scientist/functional medicine educator, Brendan Vermeire. Breandaon discusses his tumultuous journey dealing with ADHD. Two weeks after he was diagnosed with a major depressive disorder and ADHD at the age of 21, Brendan overdosed. The diagnosis for these mental disabilities was supposed to help him, but instead, almost made him take his own life. It's no wonder that suicide is the 10th leading cause of death for Americans. Brendan withstood a lot at a young age and to add to his problems, he was in a toxic relationship. But it was in this relationship where he began to try to figure out his partner's mental instabilities that he was introduced to the world of functional medicine. He became obsessed with health, specifically the dangers of oxidative stress and inflammation in the body. Brendan knows exactly how over-diagnosed mental disorders have become. We have become so fixated on what's wrong with our child instead of becoming fixated on what's wrong with the environment. By simply cutting out fake foods from your child's diet, living in a cleaner, mold-free space, and other fundamental changes, you can save money, as well as improve your child's peace of mind. Tune in, listen, and learn about the importance of metabolic and mental health!
Takeaways: [3:00] Reasons why Brendan became a health scientist [7:07] Brendan's steps after mental institution [11:03] What really causes ADHD [13:09] The importance of knowing your biochemistry [16:59] Contributing factors to oxidative stress and inflammation [19:20] Optimizing the gut-brain connection [28:21] Breaking the ADHD diagnosis and medication stigma
Memorable quotes: "What we're doing with mental health and psychology is so butchered." "Then I was actually officially diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder and ADHD at the age of 21, and it was actually like two weeks later that I woke up in the intensive care unit after overdosing, intentionally overdosing on my wellbutrins." "I think these diagnostic labels: the ADHD, the autism, major depressive disorder, or bipolar; I think they're really really asinine labels that really just don't make sense… they're focused more on the label rather than other physiological issues." "With oxidative stress and inflammation, like those are the two mechanisms that drive any illness." "Focus on what we have control on as opposed to focusing on what we do not have control of." "88% of Americans are considered metabolically ill and 70% are overweight or obese, and 43% are diabetic and 30% have a fatty liver." "Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death for Americans, and Alzheimer's is #6." "You can't get better in the environment that made you sick." "If you're kid is eating fake food, they're sedentary, you have to get them active., y You have to feed them high quality real food." "50% of the kids I work with, we change the diet, we don't need to spend the money on lab testing… the fundamentals are the way to go for sure."

| 07: Dealing With Dietary and Social Changes with Andrea Daigle | 26 May 2022 | 00:29:56 | |
In this week's episode of the Soaring Child Podcast, we had a delightful and insightful conversation with Andrea Daigle. Andrea has been on her journey with treating her ADHD-diagnosed son for about four years, and she shares the key tools and approaches she took in order to implement healthier eating and social habits for her son. The main topic we discussed in this episode is how much diet can affect behavior. We all know that establishing a dietary system that consists of whole and organic foods is the best approach, but it can be costly. So, Andrea shares her secret to keeping the price of "eating healthy" at a low rate. The key is to try to find a system that works for your child and your family. Andrea puts a strong emphasis on implementing the right system for one's child. Every child is different and one specific system is not going to get results for every single child. Parents have to try things out and fixate on what works for their child and what does not. But the important thing is to try. Get started making the right changes for your child and your family.
Takeaways: [2:59] The start of Andrea's journey in treating their son with ADHD [4:37] Andrea's son's adverse reaction to the medication [7:19] The reason why Andrea connected with The Soaring Child [10:48] How families should start to make dietary changes [17:15] Getting kids to transition from dairy milk to non-dairy milk [19:50] Keeping the cost of "eating healthy" low [22:31] How to deal with a picky eater [26:17] How to deal with friends' birthday parties when they're implementing changes in diet [29:35] Key final takeaways

Memorable quotes: "But in the process of me exploring these different avenues… you know… working with doctors… medication and that sort of thing, he started having outbursts, tantrums, and just… a lot of emotional dysregulation." "It got to the point where the school was calling me every day so I did it… I put him on medication, and it was awful. He had the most violent rages on that medication, and it just exacerbated the problem." "The number one thing that was the most eye-opening was that my son, at 7 years old, said, 'Mommy, I feel happy, I feel good.' And that was when we knew we were making a difference." " A very good place to begin is taking a look at those snacks. It's a very good place to start for everybody. Look at those snacks and what's coming in and out of those packages." "The thing you want to do with birthday parties is be prepared. We always want to be prepared and plan ahead. The very first thing to do is call and find out what's being served at the birthday party." "We started this journey when my son was 7. He is almost 11 years old now, and he chooses to eat this way. If we go to a party, he's the one that takes charge of what we bring, what that sweet treat is, because he doesn't want to go backwards. He doesn't want to feel what he used to feel." "The last thing I want to say is if you're feeling overwhelmed, or you're feeling like you have nothing left to try, or your children are really struggling, you haven't tried implementing diet and nutrition changes, now is the time. Don't sit on it. Don't wait. Don't even take a second guess about it. Now is this time, because it is going to be the best decision you will ever make for you and your family."

| 06: The ADHD Diet, part 2: The 5 Worst Foods to Feed Kids with ADHD | 19 May 2022 | 00:36:45 | |
On this episode of the Soaring Child Podcast, we continue our journey in omitting the top 5 worst foods for kids with ADHD: gluten, dairy, soy, sugar, and artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives. I dive deep into studies as well as personal cases that prove my point that these foods are not the types of foods we should be feeding our children, our guests, and ourselves. It's hard to give up the foods we've grown up eating like milk, bread, cake, cookies, all that good comfort food we know and love. But studies have concluded that these foods are heavily processed, contain gluten that may cause opioid-like effects on the body, cause extreme amounts of inflammation, disturb our digestive system, and much much more. Tune in to one of the most important talks people should listen to if they have a child with ADHD, or even have ADHD themselves and want to do something about it. The fact that the US allows ingredients in certain foods that are banned in countries throughout Europe and other parts of the world should certainly be an alarm to people who regularly consume gluten, dairy, soy, sugar, and anything artificial.
Takeaways: [7:10] Gluten can cause opioid-like effects on the body [10:20] The glutamate effect [12:03] List of foods with high gluten level [13:33] Reasons to cut out dairy from child's diet [16:28] Reasons to cut out soy from child's diet [18:52] Heavy dangers of sugar [26:06] Reasons to cut artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives from child's diet
Memorable Quotes: "It's baffling to me that the United States continues to allow ingredients into their food supply that are not even food. It's no wonder that we have so many staggering health issues." "Inflammation isn't the only issue with gluten, though. Gluten also has the potential to create opioid-like effects in some individuals." "When we removed gluten from my son's diet, he became a completely different person. Calm, focused, able to sit still. One of the moms I work with said the same thing about her son." "One thing to keep in mind when removing gluten is that some people go through a gluteomorphin response; think of this like a detox period. During this period, their ADHD symptoms might actually get worse for a short period of time before they get better." "Dairy, like gluten, also creates inflammatory responses in the body… about 50% of those who have a gluten sensitivity also have a dairy sensitivity." "Some researchers suggest that 3 out of every 4 people have an unknown sensitivity to dairy." "Dairy intolerance creates digestive problems, allergies, acne, asthma, and a whole host of other issues." "Simple carbs should be avoided or seriously limited. Now, complex carbs on the other hand, come from vegetables, whole grains, beans, nuts, and seeds. Complex carbs help sustain healthy blood sugar levels." "Companies may not listen to our voices, but they will listen to our money. If enough of us refuse to buy products that contain artificial food coloring, they would be forced to make a change."

| 05: The ADHD Diet, part 1: Addressing the #1 Treatment for Kids with ADHD | 12 May 2022 | 00:25:04 | |
On this episode of The Soaring Child Podcast, the topic of discussion is the number 1 treatment for kids with ADHD, and that's a functional and nutritious diet. Many doctors know about the inadequacies of ineffectiveness of medicine like Adderall, but still continue to prescribe it to kids, instead of focusing on the root of the problem, which starts in the gut. 80% of the body's entire immune system exists in the gut, therefore diet is the main factor when it comes to illness and disease. We dive deep into the dangers of not only traditional western medicine, but also the dangers of the types of food we are feeding to our children. There are several studies now that show how an improved diet is much more effective in treating ADHD than traditional medication. There are also many studies that show how the consumption of gluten, dairy, artificial preservatives, and other food groups are exacerbating the immunological progression of our children. It's time to change the traditional way of treating ADHD. The studies are available, and now more than ever with the advancement of technology. There are no more excuses one can give. I've attached the studies mentioned on the podcast if one wants to pursue more insight. Enjoy! Videos discussed in this episode:
KEY TAKEAWAYS (with timestamps): [1:31] Gut and brain connection [8:15] Dangers of leaky gut [12:18 ] Important case studies on ADHD [15:48] The dangers of Adderall [17:34] Benefits of dairy-free and gluten-free diet [23:05] 5 terrible foods to give kids with ADHD
MEMORABLE QUOTES: "This is the main thing you have to do, or else everything else that we discuss on this podcast are not going to be as effective. This is like the foundation for everything." "80% of the body's entire immune system exists in the walls of the gut." "90-95% of the body's serotonin, and 50% of the body's dopamine, is also produced from the gut." "leaky gut is when food particles slip out of the intestinal walls and head into the bloodstream. When this occurs, the body recognizes the food particles as foreign matter and then creates an immunological response" "leaky gut might show up in the following ways: things like inflammation, malabsorption of essential nutrients, transfer of toxins to the brain, which results in poor concentration, poor memory, anxiety, depression, and behavioral issues" "In 2002, a study was done to show the connection between food intolerances and depression. The study concluded that, the patient's symptoms of depression considerably improved on an elimination diet." "The adderral ratio on parent responses on who got better compared to who got worse, was 0.7–1. What that means is that for every 0.7 children who got better, 1 child got worse using Adderall… more children got worse when using Adderall." "parents who implemented a gluten-free and dairy-free diet for their children, showed a 24–1 ratio. That means that for ever 24 kids that got better, only 1 child got worse" "It's time for something to change. It's time for the first line of treatment to be food, rather than a prescription that has a 50% of making it worse"

"When dysregulation is happening constantly and it's becoming more frequent…that's when we need to really start asking questions." "Remember, your child is not giving you a hard time. They're having a hard time." "If you are feeling like, 'How are we going to go another day like this? This is not sustainable,' then it's time to put your investigative hat on and start doing something different." "If your child has bad breath, we need to figure out what's going on in the body that is driving that because that too is not normal." "The healing starts with us…with the parents." | 04: How to Parent a Child Newly Diagnosed with ADHD with Ashley Gobeil | 03 May 2022 | 00:27:10
In this week's episode, Dana Kay is accompanied by seasoned child and adolescent therapist Ashley Gobeil in a tranquil discussion around the reduction of ADHD symptoms in children; especially for parents who are new to the diagnosis. Dana and Ashley cover a wide range of topics that affect the severity of symptoms in our children and how we as parents can help rein in some of these symptoms. Much of this episode highlights ways that we can ultimately create and maintain our own calm so that we can show up lovingly and consistently, giving our children the "over-the-top empathy" that their highly-sensitive bodies need for harmony and healing. By learning how to hold space for them (while also, holding space for ourselves), slowly but surely, our children will feel safe to unfold fully into their humanness with more ease and comfort than the stigmas may suggest.
Key Takeaways: (3:15) Caring for a child who's recently been diagnosed with ADHD is to first, consider how to care for yourself and better understand the situation (4:14) Slow down the process, consider: How does the diagnosis, the reality, etc. feel for you individually and as a family? (5:57) Looking beyond behaviors, what adds to the symptoms, emotional and family stressors, food, support available or lacking, school environment, behavior, sensitivities (9:39) Neurobiology – how the brain operates, child development bottom up in-utero-adulthood, how the entire system works and how is it different for kids with ADHD. (12:08) Fight, flight or freeze response activated when children are overwhelmed can show up as the screaming, yelling, fighting, and "defiant" behaviors that generally receive backlash (12:58) Food is very integral to the ultimate management of ADHD symptoms (22:08) It can be exhausting as a parent, breaks are okay; just aim to communicate that need in a way the child can understand so that they still feel safe/secure. (24:41) -- Every difficult moment can also be spun into a teaching moment; it really helps them develop neural pathways so the next time it happens, we can remind them of the tools we've built together

Memorable Quotes
"We can be the external regulators for our child when they don't have the internal regulation they need." "Looking beyond behaviors, what actually aggravates ADHD symptoms." "Children will learn about the world through our experience of their experience." "We need to continue to ride that wave of emotion and every time show up the same way as a parent, with consistency."

"If your gut isn't healthy, you're not going to have enough neurotransmitters to keep your brain healthy." "You can't out-supplement an unhealthy diet and lifestyle." | 111: Why Traditional ADHD Treatments Don't Always Work With Dana Kay | 06 Jun 2024 | 00:22:02
Why don't traditional ADHD treatments always work? Why does it sometimes feel like no matter what you try - be it medication, supplements, therapy, or various other strategies - that NOTHING actually works long term for your child with ADHD? If you've ever asked either of these questions, then this episode of the Soaring Child podcast is for you. Many times, traditional ADHD treatments don't work long term because they are focusing on symptom management, NOT actually addressing the underlying stressors of ADHD. Tune in to this episode to learn more. Link Mentioned in the Show:
[2:22] Why medication doesn't always work "If you've ever been puzzled by the effectiveness of traditional methods, this is your episode." "The biggest misconception about ADHD in kids is that medication is the only way to treat it. The problem with medications is that they merely mask the symptoms, without addressing the underlying stressors of ADHD." "Supplements can be effective and healing in the body. But first, parents need to be sure they are supplementing correctly." "We supplement based on a child's unique needs, and not use a one size fits all approach. Because one size does not fit all." "Shockingly, many supplements have quality problems." "We sacrificed a LOT to try therapy for my son, and it did not help at all. Not even a little bit." "Therapy can be effective, but it's not the most impactful way of handling ADHD symptoms for the vast majority of children." "While it is valuable to learn effective parenting strategies, and learn to communicate with your child better, those are almost never the reason children experience ADHD symptoms." "Diet can definitely make a difference. But, many children with ADHD are picky eaters, and they can act up if they aren't given foods they like." "I have never seen a child grow out of ADHD without some kind of changes." "The truth is, most ADHD strategies…. often miss the mark in addressing the real issue. Instead, they only address the symptoms." "The reason traditional ADHD treatments don't work long term is because they are focusing on symptom management, NOT actually addressing the underlying stressor of the ADHD." "The World Health Organization ranks chronic inflammatory diseases as the greatest threat to human health."

| 110: One Family's Experience with Functional Lab Testing for ADHD with Marisa Faassen | 30 May 2024 | 00:40:04 | |
Have you ever wondered if there was more you could do to understand and manage your child's ADHD symptoms? One family's journey with functional lab testing might just offer the answers you're looking for. In this episode of the Soaring Child podcast episode, you can hear from Marisa, the mother of a child with ADHD who used functional lab testing to support her child. Hear their story and discover how you too might benefit from this approach. Link Mentioned in the Show: Key Takeaways: Memorable Moments: "We were starting to get some judgment from some of our family, because when you don't understand ADHD, you don't get it. You look at a child and think, 'Why can't you discipline them? Why can't you calm them down? Why can't they regulate themselves?' They're looking at them as bad kids because they see that as bad behavior." "For the first time in our journey, I felt understood. I thought, 'Oh my gosh, this makes sense.'" "Honestly for us, it was a relief. It was validation that we weren't crazy..that there was something going on that we couldn't identify." "We go to doctors now…and you're just always given something. Here's a pill. Here's a pill. Here's a pill. And you never get to the root of the issue." "We never want her ADHD to be a handicap to her." "We go in and we think we need to do it all at once, but that's overwhelming for us…We just did one thing at a time." "It was noticeable in her appearance as soon as she went off the gluten." "It just takes time. It's hard at first…but just give it the time." "The functional lab testing… is that foundation, and you can build on it." "There's more to treating ADHD than just medication. That is the one thing I wish I'd known."

| 109: Is it ADHD…or a Concussion? with Dr. Spencer Zimmerman | 23 May 2024 | 00:25:59 | |
Did you know that ADHD is meant to be a diagnosis of exclusion? This means other potential causes should be considered before confirming ADHD. Surprisingly, conditions like concussions can show similar symptoms and are often misdiagnosed as ADHD. In this episode of the Soaring Child podcast, Dr. Spencer Zimmerman joins the show to discuss how concussions in kids are frequently mistaken for ADHD and what signs to look for. Dr. Zimmerman is a Clinician and Founder at Idaho Brain and Body Institute, where he helps individuals struggling with neurological, psychological, and body-based symptoms and conditions. He's refined his unique method over the past 10 years and has worked with over 2,000 patients. He's the author of the best selling book Brain-Reset: 7 Steps to a Healthier Brain. He's been on ABC, CBS, and Daily Flash talking about brain health. He's uniquely cross trained as both a Chiropractor and Nurse Practitioner. He's a Diplomate in Chiropractic Neurology, a Peptide Certified Provider through A4M, and has extensive training in Functional Medicine and Functional Immunology. Link Mentioned in the Episode:
Key Takeaways: [4:29] How often are concussion symptoms mistaken for ADHD?
Memorable Moments: "It may look like ADHD symptoms if a concussion goes misdiagnosed." "ADHD rates are going up, and there's a lot of different things that are happening…that are contributing to that. But let's not forget also that there can be other things that can cause ADHD-like symptoms." "When you get a diagnosis, you've got to say, 'Is there a better explanation for it?' So don't ever give a kid an ADHD diagnosis unless you've said, 'We've looked at the other things that would better explain these symptoms, and concussions are things that are routinely missed." "It's actually upwards of 20% of kids who play contact sports will suffer a concussion each and every year, and 50% are never going to be diagnosed or evaluated… "The goal is not to prevent them from playing sports. The goal is to say, 'How can we play sports safely and then when is the right time to return because your functionality is back where it should be?'" "You shouldn't be making a concussion diagnosis based purely on symptoms." "If you're suspecting a concussion, you won't see it on imaging. You have to do these detailed tests." "If you have a concussion, your risk of a lower extremity injury or any injury in a sport actually goes up the next 2 years...But if you get the concussion truly recovered and not just symptom-free, you're going to minimize that risk." "Females have a greater risk for concussions." "Strengthen your neck because that way, if you do, you've got more resilience."

| 107: Primitive Reflexes in Kids with ADHD with Dr. Kaleb Scroggin | 09 May 2024 | 00:38:35 | |
What are primitive reflexes? What role do they play in ADHD symptoms? And can working on retained primitive reflexes really make that much of a difference in kids with ADHD? Dr. Kaleb Scroggin joins this episode of the Soaring Child podcast to share more on this topic. Dr. Scroggin was born and raised in Savannah, Georgia where he currently runs his pediatric-focused Chiropractic practice. He was a high level athlete growing up where he was exposed to sports chiropractic and even went on to work with pro athletes in the NFL and MLB during his undergraduate and the first portion of his chiropractic schooling. He was then exposed to the profound impact of working with children and the life changes that can happen when a child's health is improved and restored. He immediately shifted from working with athletes and dove into newborn and neurodevelopmental health. From there he received a board certification in pediatrics and published a paper on balance and coordination in children with ASD, while running a practice and raising three beautiful children with his wife. Every day he is invigorated with the changes he sees in childrens' lives. If you are curious to learn more about retained primitive reflexes, tune in to this episode!

Key Takeaways: [4:01] What are primitive reflexes? [8:21] What are retained primitive reflexes? [14:30] What should a parent do if they suspect a child has retained primitive reflexes? [22:02] Are there specific reflexes that are directly related to ADHD challenges? [30:16] Is there a time when it's too late to fix these things? [37:00] Where to find Kaleb online
Memorable Moments: "Primitive reflexes are the major movers of your body from about 4 months pre-birth to about 4 months after birth, and their goal is to actually train your brain on what to do." "There's about 14 different…primitive reflexes…that we check in our office on our new infant exams that should be there at birth." "There are some reflexes that are there starting at 4 months before birth and some that don't come on until a few months after birth that help with different developmental milestones." "Movement is the #1 driver of brain development." "There's a ton of infant reflexes that need to be integrated in order for that frontal lobe - the executive function - to have a good foundation to work." "You have to turn on the whole frontal part of the brain in the developmental order as a baby for the adult part of the brain to work appropriately."

| 106: How to Have a Non Toxic Summer with Dana Kay | 02 May 2024 | 00:27:13 | |
Summer is full of outdoor activities and memorable adventures. But it's also a time when our children are more exposed to various environmental toxins, like chlorine from swimming pools, chemicals in sunscreens, etc. These toxins can add a significant load to their bodies, exacerbating ADHD symptoms. In this episode of the Soaring Child podcast, discover how to have a non-toxic summer (and how to safely and effectively detox from any toxins your child might be exposed to).
Links mentioned in the episode: My favorite magnesium flakes: https://amzn.to/3PISJEE My favorite HM-ET binder: https://shop.adhdthriveinstitute.com/hm-et-binder-120-capsules.html ADHD Fast Class: https://bit.ly/3GAbFQl Detoxification Episode - https://adhdthriveinstitute.com/podcast/soaring-child-episode-88/
Key Takeaways: [3:20] Common toxins kids are exposed to during the summer [7:20] Tips to make swimming less toxic [11:38] What to look for in a sunscreen [15:38] How parents can ensure a toxin-free environment at summer camp [18:14] Natural ways to support detoxification and reduce the impact of toxins
Memorable Moments: "During the summer, children are often more active and spend a considerable amount of time outdoors, which, while very beneficial for kids with ADHD, also increases their exposure to various environmental toxins." "Because children's bodies are still developing, they are more vulnerable to the adverse effects of chemical exposures. Their smaller size, higher rates of metabolism, and the fact that they're closer to the ground (where some toxins settle) further increase their risk." "Though chlorine isn't ideal, there are things you can do to help your kids detox those chemicals before and after swimming." "You can still use sunscreen but choose a cleaner brand and this will go a long way in reducing your child's overall toxic load!" "It's much easier to limit a child's toxic exposure when they're at home with us under our supervision, but many of our kids will also be going to summer camps so we need to think about this too." "The goal is to support the body's natural detoxification processes, which include the liver, kidneys, digestive system, and skin, in a gentle and supportive way." "Remember, small tweaks can make a significant impact."

| 122: Organic Vs. Non-Organic Food for Kids with ADHD with Dana Kay | 22 Aug 2024 | 00:29:58 | |
Is it really necessary to buy organic foods? Is it worth the extra cost, or is it simply a marketing tactic? In this episode of the Soaring Child podcast, Dana Kay, board certified holistic health and nutrition practitioner, answers these questions and more. Tune in to learn more about what it means for a food to be classified as organic, as well as when it's most important to stick with organic (and when it's okay to buy non-organic). Link Mentioned in the Show:
Key Takeaways: [2:37] What makes a product "organic"? Memorable Moments: "Organic farmers use only natural processes on their farms, so when we buy organic, we can be more confident that we are not eating Genetically modified ingredients or toxic chemicals." "GMO stands for genetically modified organisms. GMOs are living organisms whose genetic material has been artificially manipulated in a lab setting." "In 1994, the FDA approved the first GMO tomato." "Most GMOs fall into one of two categories: herbicide tolerant or pesticide producing." "We really don't know how their consumption is going to affect our health long-term. We also don't know how they will affect our planet or our animals. Remember, GMOs are, in essence, manufactured plants. They can't be found in nature anywhere. They are created in labs and then pushed on consumers, many times without our knowledge." "In the United States, three federal agencies regulate the use of GMOs: the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). These agencies claim GMOs are safe for consumption...but are they really? These organizations are the same ones who refuse to ban ingredients that other countries have banned because of their significant health concerns." "A consumer should know what they are eating at all times. They shouldn't have to guess or read between the lines. Labels should be clear one hundred percent of the time." "In the United States, the following crops are often genetically modified: corn, soybeans, cotton, sugarbeets, alfalfa, apples, canola, potatoes, eggplant, papaya, pineapple, salmon, squash." "Since the early 1990's (when GMOs really hit the market), Americans have grown sicker and sicker." "When we consume GMOs, we are participating in the ONLY long-term safety trial EVER conducted in humans." "One of the best ways to avoid exposure to toxic pesticides is knowing which foods you need to buy organic." "If a food is on the Dirty Dozen List, you NEED to buy organic because these fruits and vegetables have shown to be the most contaminated with harmful pesticides. The foods on the Clean 15, though, don't necessarily need to be organic." Dana Kay Resources: 👋SOCIALS:

[15:44] Symptoms of Lyme Disease parents should look out for in children [19:12] What happened when Heather was finally diagnosed with Lyme Disease [22:44] What a holistic approach to Lyme Disease looks like [26:54] Heather's advice to parents if they think Lyme Disease might be an issue for their child [28:57] Where to find Heather online
Memorable Moments: "Lyme disease is the great mimicer." "One of the telltale signs is it's got migrating pain." "It's a tick, mosquito, any blood-borne carrying insect…it can be sexually transmitted and it can be congenitally transmitted." "Only 30% of people with Lyme Disease will get that bullseye [rash]." "There's lots and lots of components that go into who gets it and who doesn't." "I can't even count how many times I've been reprimanded…when really it was an inflamed brain and lyme disease, mold toxicity, and celiac disease this whole time." "What a blessing it was at 34 years old…to finally have a piece of paper that said…there wasn't something wrong with me in the way that I was made to feel my whole entire life." "The CDC just recognized chronic Lyme Disease as a disease for the first time last year." "I've talked to so many people with autoimmune and Lyme and they just talk about having flares, like it's a normal part of the disease, which you don't have to have the flares if you address all the different areas that need to be addressed." "No matter how common a symptom may be, it is never normal. It is always the body's check engine light coming on, and sadly too often we take something over the counter, which is like putting a piece of tape over that check engine light, and things just keep getting worse and worse…So pay attention to those symptoms."

Memorable Moments: "I tried everything I knew as a physician…No one ever - ever - suggested any kind of dietary intervention." "I thought I was doing good - giving him a good, healthy diet, but little did I know until I got into your program that there was so much more to dietary interventions than just the things that I knew as a dietician to do." As a dietitian and as a gastroenterologist…I'm well aware of the relationship between the brain and the gut interactions when it comes to gastrointestinal diseases...that same interaction affects the brain in terms of ADHD." "I was so frustrated as a dietician that the physicians did not appreciate the role of nutrition in preventing disease nor in treating disease and I thought, 'Ya know, if I can become a physician, I can then write the diet orders and I can help thousands of patients with my expertise in nutrition to treat them." "As a patient, you turn to that doctor as the expert so somehow we have to get the word out there that nutrition, diet, and alternative methods are vital to the diagnosis and treatment of ADHD "My biggest regret is that I didn't know sooner….My son, for 19 years, was on a path I thought was best, which was medication…How many years of his life did he lose because I didn't know and try an alternative diet therapy?" [24:07] How to avoid artificial flavors and colors [25:01] Brands that often avoid artificial flavors and colors
Memorable Moments: "For families of kids with ADHD, understanding the potential impact of these artificial ingredients is crucial in managing symptoms and promoting a more balanced and focused state of mind." "Artificial colors, also known as food dyes, are chemical substances developed in laboratories. They're used in a wide array of foods to enhance appearance, making them more visually appealing." "Artificial flavors, similar to artificial colors, are chemical compounds created in laboratories." "Unlike natural flavors that are derived from actual food sources, artificial flavors are synthesized to mimic natural tastes. These flavors are engineered to replicate the taste of fruits, nuts, spices, and other natural foods." "Artificial flavors are often complex mixtures of numerous chemicals." "Here are some common terms indicating artificial flavors or colors: Artificial Flavors, Artificial Colors, Synthetic Flavors, Artificial Flavoring Substances, Synthetic Food Coloring." "Studies have illuminated a concerning link between artificial additives and ADHD symptoms." "In Britain, food is made with real ingredients, while in America, chemicals are often added with no warning label. This needs to change. American consumers deserve the same consideration as those outside the USA." "When chemicals are added to food, we should be informed. It's baffling that the United States continues to allow ingredients that are not even food, contributing to staggering health issues." "Artificial flavors and colors are everywhere. Even a lot of things that are clear or white in color have dyes or flavors in them." "My best tip is to eat fewer processed foods as these additives are always in processed foods and to read those labels." "My rule of thumb is, if you can't pronounce an item, put that item back on the shelf. The shorter the ingredient list, the better."

Memorable Moments: "When we change the way somebody breathes, we change their entire health." "The average person is unconscious about how they breathe, and it's something that we do 23,000 times a day, whether we like it or not. And air, believe it or not, is the thing that we consume the most. The average person, the average adult, consumes about 30 pounds of air a day." "How we breathe plays a huge role in our immune health, plays a huge role in our energy levels, plays a huge role in how well we detoxify and eliminate toxicity from our body. In fact, 70% of the toxins in our body are actually eliminated through the lungs." "It's a very sophisticated instrument of healing, and it's also very simple. We're already doing it. We just need to draw our consciousness to it and then make the minor adjustments and shifts so that now we are breathing in a way that prioritizes our health." "Our breath overrides the brain…How our children breathe and how we as adults breathe is super informative to the nervous system, to our cellular respiratory system, and also to our behavior as well." "The easiest analogy I can give to people is that the breath is like the steering wheel of the nervous system. So are we breathing in such a way that it's steering us in the right direction or are we breathing in such a way that it's steering us in an undesirable direction." "We want our nervous system to match our desired state, and our nervous system is steered by our breath."

Key Takeaways:
[3:18] The Top Areas to Focus on - Beginner Level - Diet, Supplements, Exercise [14:22] The Top Areas to Focus on - Intermediate Level - Functional Lab Testing, Targeted Supplementation, Optimizing Detoxification [24:42] The Top Areas to Focus on - Advanced Level - Dietary Flexibility, Maintenance Supplements
Memorable Moments: "Diet is the foundation of any plan to reduce ADHD symptoms naturally. The food we consume plays a crucial role in how our bodies and brains function." "Supplements should never be considered the be-all and end-all for ADHD support. As I say often, you can't supplement your way out of a poor diet. BUT, in conjunction with dietary changes, supplements can be very beneficial." "Research shows that taking probiotics can help support that gut-brain connection. But, the problem with a lot of probiotics is that the strains don't survive digestion." "Functional lab tests can uncover underlying issues that might be contributing to ADHD symptoms, such as nutrient deficiencies, parasites, leaky gut, food sensitivities, mold, etc." "Our bodies are constantly exposed to toxins, and for children with ADHD, reducing this toxic burden is really important." "It is impossible to get rid of all toxins from your life, so that's why it's important to optimize detoxification." "Once you're in the thriving phase, it's important to reassess the supplements your child is taking. Maintenance supplements are about supporting ongoing health and preventing regression."

| 99: How to Read Nutrition Labels with Andrea Daigle | 14 Mar 2024 | 00:22:16 | |
Ever glanced at a food label and felt like you needed a degree to understand it? There is definitely A LOT of information on food labels that can make it tricky. But, reading food labels is crucial, not just for those with dietary restrictions, but for anyone aiming to make healthier choices. From 'natural flavors' to hidden sugars, what's on the label can often be surprising. Andrea Daigle joined this episode of the Soaring Child podcast, sharing invaluable insights on navigating the maze of food labels. Whether you're trying to cut out certain ingredients or just want to eat cleaner, Andrea's tips and tricks are a game-changer.
Link mentioned in the episode: ADHD Fast Class - https://bit.ly/3GAbFQl
Key Takeaways: [4:26] Why we need to read food labels [6:11] Where to start with reading food labels [9:39] Common foods that often have hidden gluten and dairy in them [14:14] How to read the labels on eggs [16:48] How to read labels for proteins like beef, chicken, and seafood
Memorable Moments: "We need to read every single label, and it can be a bit tedious, but eventually, you're going to get the hang of it." "Now more than ever, it is so important to read labels because there are so many chemicals, additives, and quite frankly just nasty ingredients that are being put into our foods." "The key is, you want that list to be as clean as possible. A good rule of thumb here is, if you don't know what it is, we probably shouldn't be eating it." "The end goal here is to know what each and every ingredient is, for you to be able to pronounce it, and that list shouldn't be very long." "The gold standard is to look for pasture-raised eggs with grade AA rating with the organic label." "When you're looking at beef, you want organic, grass fed beef." "For chicken, we're going to look for pasture-raised organic chicken." "For seafood, wild caught is best." "The only ingredient in your proteins should be the protein itself."

Memorable Moments: "Children have challenging behaviors all the time, even if you're not dealing with neurodivergence or ADHD. There are things that set us off as parents, and it goes back to how we view the situation." "As moms, everyone is so hard on ourselves. We are constantly berating ourselves." "All these things we say to ourselves, we would not accept anyone else saying to us." "This constant flow of insults really affects our mood and really brings us down, so the first thing I would suggest is to start looking to see, 'What am I saying to myself?'" "If we give ourselves that self-compassion…that is such a big help against that guilt that we feel every day." "A lot of the guilt also comes from trying to do it all." "We have issues asking for help…so much so that we would rather do it ourselves than ask for the help when doing it." "If you have another adult in the home in addition to yourself, there is no reason you should be doing all the work." "It's never going to fix the situation if you don't let people experience the natural consequences." "Am I going to be resentful and angry if I do this right now? If the answer is yes, then I don't do it, and I let natural consequences take its course." "Guilt never goes away; you just get better at handling it."

"There is no 'one size fits all' approach to ADHD symptoms." "It is true that supplements can play a very important role in nutrition and healing, but sadly no single supplement is going to solve all of your problems." "I always trongly recommend before considering supplementation that you address diet first or specific functional lab testing to identify underlying malfunctions and stressors."
