Have you ever had one of those days?
One of those days where you just wanna hang out with your boys, rob a bank, pay for a loved oneās operation, maybe get out of the country for awhileā¦.. and it all goes to hell?
A more serious version of what was just described occurred on August 22, 1972 in Brooklyn, New York. The bank robberyāand the combination of surreal events and real life drama that surrounded itāwas the topic of a LIFE magazine article which was in turn the basis for Sidney Lumetās 1975 crime drama Dog Day Afternoon.
The movie centers on our two bank robbers: Sonny and Sal.
Al Pacino plays Sonnyāa neurotic Vietnam vet whose impulsiveness and frenetic energy gives every scene a unique form of tension.
John Cazale is Salāthe sidekick who seems to be boiling right beneath the surface of his outward personality. Early in the film you kinda get the sense that Sal could shoot everyoneāincluding Sonny and himselfāat any moment.
Dog Day Afternoon has a visceral appeal. Desperation comes off the screen in waves. The chaotic tone of the movie makes it seem unscripted, comically real, and frightening. Just like life.
STRANGE LOVE: Black Narcissus

So itās 1947 andā¦ somethingās in the air.
Written and directed by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, Black Narcissus outwardly uses breathtaking sets and cinematography to hint at the inner conflicts of a host of characters.
A company of Anglican nuns are attempting to set up a colonial school and hospital in what used to be the palace-home of a generalās harem. Tensions begin to mount once the nuns experience strange illnesses and are overcome by unfamiliarāand perhaps illicitāemotions.
The incessant wind becomes a metaphor for what seems unexplainable and unstoppable. This combination of setting and circumstance brings about a mood of strange love in multiple corners of the story.
And when tragedy strikes, the result is a head-on collision between madness and erotic awakening thatāvery literallyāsends one character over the edgeā¦

In 1999 we were transported back to 1959 to meet a very interesting, determined, andĀ derangedĀ young man named Tom Ripleyā¦
Matt Damon is Ripleyāthe protagonist and antagonist of both the Patricia Highsmith 1956 novel and this, the film adaptation ofĀ The Talented Mr. Ripley. And from the moment Damon appears on screen, thereās a just a hint of oddness in his demeanor that slowly burns into full blown madness and duplicity by the end of the film.Ā Ā
The Talented Mr. Ripley is a movie loved by critics and fans, and much of that affection can be credited to a great castāwhich includes Gwyneth Paltrow, Cate Blanchett, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, and Jude Lawāand to a great script. The story revolves around Ripleyās obsessive fascination with the inner and outer lives of the wealthy. But more importantly, it focuses-in on Ripleyās palpable Interest in Lawās character: Dickie Greenleaf.Ā
As we watch everything unfold, Ripley goes from acquiring Dickieās taste in music, to wearing Dickieās clothes, to watching Dickie have sex, to burying Dickie at seaā¦ Soon, Ripley decides toĀ becomeĀ Dickie. After all, the only thing better than being with the one you loveāisĀ beingĀ the one you love. Right?

Two questions: Can a two-hour argument be interesting AND fully define the past, present, and future of a strange love?
Thatās what weāre gonna dive into as we look at 2021ās Malcolm & Marieāa film that puts two actors in a celluloid ring, straps the gloves on, rings the bell, and letās the toxic punches flyā¦
John David Washingtonās Malcolm Elliott is a filmmaker who has just premiered the movie that will make him a household name. Zendayaās Marie Jones is the inspiration behind Malcolmās film and also his partner in whatāif we're being politeācould most accurately be described as a tumultuous relationship. At the film premier, Malcolm apparently thanks everyone involved with the movie, and basically everyone he knowsā¦ except for Marie.
Cue the explosions.
So, almost as soon as Malcolm and Marie arrive home following the premier, everything hits the fan. The ensuing argument has its peaks and valleys, and it dips as easily into the traumas of the past as it does the insecurities and accusations of the present. And by the time the discourse distills into the 3 little words that no one wants to hear (Iām talking about āI HATE YOUā), weāve gone on a grand tour of this coupleās personal and combined damage.
Selfish acts, unlimited ego, unresolved issues, intentional infliction of pain, etcetera, etceteraā¦ Itās all here. But is it strange? Or, is Malcolm & Marie just a portrait of what everyday, real life love looks like?

Letās talk about The War of the Roses, an 80s movie that shows just how far two people will go when what starts out as the perfect marriage ends up in the ugliest of divorces.
This is a film that reunites Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner, who star as Oliver Rose and Barbara Rose respectively, with Danny DeVito, who also directed. The three had previously worked together in Romancing the Stone and its sequelāwhich are completely different films than what weāre talking about today. The War of the Roses traces the arc of Oliver and Barbaraās life together, from its sweet beginnings to its bitter, bitter end. As their love dissipates, we watch them gradually begin to despise each other and they eventually turn their family home into a final battleground.
The War of the Roses flirts with comedic rage and cartoon-like violence, but at times the disgust between the two lead characters is palpable. Itās clear that the movie has something serious to say about the consequences of vengeance and vendettas. And as we watch Oliver and Barbara engage in toxic rivalry and domestic warfare, the film shows us what divorce looks like when the opposite of love turns out not to be indifference, but instead, transforms into uncontrollable hate.
STRANGE LOVE: Klute

In the 1971 neo-noir thriller Klute, director Alan J. Pakula and stars Jane Fonda and Donald Sutherland explore the refuge offered by an unexpected love, along with the fears and demons that continuously tear at it.
Fondaās Bree Daniels is being stalked by a deranged killer, while Sutherlandās John Klute tries to protect her without falling in love with her. But Breeāa prostitute caught between her desire for a new life and her tortured acceptance of the one she hasācanāt help but gravitate toward the private detective Klute, whose genuine affection confuses and intoxicates her. In the shadows is the killerāserving as the perfect backdrop for a world where vulnerability is dangerous and control is addictive.
Klute is a film that is often taut with suspense, but manages to linger long enough to examine the motivations of lust, while expressing the power and possibilities of a strange love.
