169: Chicago Smells F*cking Terrific (feat. Bianco Profumo)15 Oct 202401:04:12

We have Mark and Nick Holmes, the father & son duo of Bianco Profumo — a new Chicago-based fragrance brand that captures the Italian-Americana of the '80s and '90s. In their words: "We do it big. Our hair is perfectly spritzed into place, we speak ten decibels louder than everyone else, we’re the life of every party, and we smell f**king terrific." Their debut launch of three scents immediately grabbed our attention (not hard with these scent profiles: a black cherry leather jacket, a ripe tomato garden, and the modern Cool Water of today) and from what we learn in this episode, this is just the beginning for Bianco Profumo.

We discuss:

  • the food at the Glossier Yous launch event
  • a restroom perfume rec
  • the secret Tsu Lang Yor launch event at Stéle we attended
  • Mugler Angel Fantasm — just as punchy as the original, plus piña colada
  • Sable smells like DS & Durga Murder Mystery set Prof. Newton Hay + PRof. Rrose
  • Tynan smells like Pearfat Stomped On Bed Of Lettuce

160: "brat" scents for when you want to party but are in the midst of an existential crisis30 Jul 202401:11:16

This, as well as other hard-hitting listener questions, are included in this week's Q&A episode. Enjoy!

We discuss: Sable's Die Hot With A Vengeance perfume launch event at Stèle. Why do They (Big Fragrance) keep trying to make perfume layering happen? Byredo 1996 is allegedly coming back. What fragrances belong in a museum? Perfume snobbery.  The ideal time to have sex.  The impending 'beauty is horror' cultural genre. What brands are banned from the pod. And much more...

What we smell like today: Dolce & Gabbana Q, Scentspace Toasty Vanilla, Smoky Haze, Breezy Bay

70: We're Getting Scent To Bed08 Mar 202201:19:37

What if you could use your sense of smell to fall asleep quicker and rest more deeply?  We have vice president and perfumer at Givaudan Olivier Gillotin on the pod to tell us about Dreamscentz™, the tech that aids the creation of scents scientifically designed to promote better sleep. We get into the research and the application of how these scents are created and how scent can affect mood for overall wellbeing.

69: You Can't Fuck A Fragrance01 Mar 202201:08:49

Sex sells, but you can't fuck a fragrance. You can, however, fuck a celebrity (if you're lucky or maybe try really hard), and combining the two has been the standard for how to sell a fragrance since forever probably. The spokespeople are however getting kookier and by way of more interesting choices... hotter? Now that it appears that clout and a certain It-ness of cultural relevancy garner more intrigue and more dollars, the people in our fragrance ads are perhaps less familiar but wholly more inclusive and interesting. Anyway, all that and such, but we shall be using this flimsy structure of a topic to go on about hot people in fragrance ads.

68: Why Does Everyone Want to Smell Rich?22 Feb 202201:04:58

Those who know better know that money smells like balls, but when it comes to smelling rich, wealthy, or classy, people have opinions that may or may not be misinformation  set to a soundtrack of Lana Del Rey remixes on everyone's favorite clock app. It's a vibe, it's a mood, it's perhaps an ill-conceived aspiration that says nothing of wealth itself but the idea of a certain level of taste and what it means to live a life of conspicuous consumption. So, we stay wondering. Why does everyone want to smell rich, anyway?

67: K-fume Is About To Be A Thing15 Feb 202201:12:37

South Korea has proved to be a triple threat with K-beauty, K-pop, and K-dramas putting us all in a cultural chokehold within the last decade. And yet... what about K-perfume? K-Fragrance? K-Scent? WELL. Meet ELOREA, a new fragrance brand pioneering the way for K-fumes. Co-founders Wonny Lee and Su Min Park join us on this episode to tell us all about ELOREA, its humble beginnings, inspirations, and unique ingredients and notes sourced from Korea.

66: What Does Love Smell Like?08 Feb 202201:06:23

It takes your hosts 40 whole-ass minutes to answer the goddamn question but they get there.

Preceding that, a lot of hot goss: What even is love? Are we all doomed? How many people have been personally victimized by Dior Sauvage? Will this fragrance finally allow Sable to manifest her dreams? Why does Tynan always shower alone? Is it live, laugh, love? Or love, laugh, live? Does she who loves life get the last laugh? Tune in to find out.

We dissect love, dating, romance, anxiety, neurosis, and OK YES eventually the smells of it all, in this, The 2022 Valentine's Episode.

65: The Angel Legacy: From 'Shit On Shit' To The God Of Gourmands01 Feb 202201:04:33

Mugler Angel is one of the most famous fragrances ever. The iconic star-shaped bottle is instantly recognizable as is its scent — unapologetically sweet, sticky, hot, and heavy. It gets in your nose, your eyes, your mouth, and sets up shop in your brain with all its gooey, candy-like floof.  Its overwhelmingly abundant make-up is what we affectionately refer to as "shit on shit." You either love it or can't stand it.

There's more to her than just dozens upon dozens of notes and accords, though, as we've learned and you can too, in this episode — like the genesis of the fragrance, what untraditional ingredients made it not just another fragrance but an innovation of what fragrance could be, what inspired the bottle, how many takes it took to get the scent right, and just how many goddamn flankers its spawned (a lot).

64: The Most Intimidating Fragrance Shop In New York25 Jan 202201:28:46

Deep in the Lower East Side, you will find New York City's own Temple Of Beauty, AKA Aedes Perfumery. The artisanal fragrance boutique has carried some of Europe's most elite brands under one roof since 1995. We talk to co-founder Robert Gerstner, who along with his co-founder Karl Bradl, opened one of New York City's most unique fragrance boutiques, which brings some of Europe's best artisanal scents to the states. Gerstner shares some fragrance-shopping insight, like why the coffee bean smell-reset thing is bullshit, what you should actually smell to neutralize your nose when testing lots of fragrances, and why you should get over fragrance shopping intimidation. Also, Naomi Campbell's eyedrops of choice.

Also pertinent: Aedes De Venustas, the shop's house line of fragrances, offers some of the most exquisite scents this side of the Atlantic — a  bit of European sophistication and flair handmade in New York with the energetic attitude that this city imbues unto all those who dare make a name for themselves here.

It's a brand new year, which doesn't actually mean... a thing. BUT we do have our first episode of 2022 kicking off with our made-up scent resolutions AKA the "ins" and "outs" of smells and scents, plus, as it turns out, lots of things that have nothing to do with either.

Excuse the jittery energy, as we get into it with our girl, who's had a prolific career, from dropping out of college, joining the army, dominating YouTube, interviewing the president of the United States (!!!) and of course, launching cheeky candle brand, FORVR MOOD.

What's it like to be a perfumer? Is it like going to Hogwarts School of Whiffcraft & Whiffery? In some ways, yes. And in some ways...not no. Luckily, we have perfumer Marissa Zappas on to tell us about her journey into the olfactory arts, what it's like going from the corporate world of fragrance to carving her own independent path in scent sorcery, and why it's better to study for a smell test when you're ovulating. Carbon emissions = bad. Perfume = good. This is the basic math behind Air Company's second product ever: AIR EAU DE PARFUM, a fragrance made from CO2 emissions. How do you make perfume from [gestures all around] the air?? We have Greg Constantine, co-founder of Air Company on the pod to tell us about his humble operation that literally turns carbon emissions into useful things like vodka, perfume, and jet fuel — all essential items for our planet's uncertain future.

53: DEATH (To All Of Them) [The Remix]19 Oct 202101:02:33

It's spooky season once again and we're bubbling up this very seasonal episode on THE SMELL OF DEATH from a year ago with neuroscientist and cadaver scholar, Mo Costandi. It's not just a copy/paste — that's not our style, no, what the hell. We, of course, include an all-new, updated, present-day, overwrought overture, as is our style indeed. Also, we have so many new smells to tell you about! So, even if you are familiar with the smell of death (our episode, not the actual smell), there are reasons to give it  another listen.

52: We've Had Enough Of This Scent-less Violence12 Oct 202101:08:42

Added fragrance in beauty products gets a bad rep these days. But given the likelihood that most products "don't work" anyway, may we at least reap some sensorial joy out of greasing up our slowly deteriorating mortal vessels with our little creams and potions, please? If you can slather it, we've smelled it, and this episode contains our favorite non-fragrance fragranced products.

What else:

  • Tynan doesn't know how to do laundry
  • Sable is the worst rock star
  • I'm a little lad who loves Botox and cream
  • The Ariana Grande Cloud Atlas Ultimate
  • Sable was not a teenage klepto ;)
  • Is there such a thing as a round fetish?
  • No, I'm seriously asking
  • The surprise best lip product for male-identifying makeup wearers

51: The Extreme Intense Pleasure Paradox05 Oct 202101:27:54

We've been noticing a perfume pattern that suggests a move towards indulgence, intensity, and the extreme. What could it mean? Listen to us trying to figure it out for nearly the time commitment of a feature-length film.

This episode has everything:

  • A list of perfumes
  • A list of their "extreme," "intense," and in some cases "Eau fraîche" flankers
  • Things we like :)
  • Things we do not like :(
  • Sable reveals the worst fruit
  • Tynan  reveals what size his bed is
  • The illusion of morality in beauty
  • The paradox of pleasure and restraint
  • Jokes!

We cover the process of the book deal, the writing of the book, the convoluted nature of our current beauty culture and the precarious positions we find ourselves in for its pursuit, and (almost) everything you'd want to know about the book of the summer — because it's officially out today!

50: Reinventing The Wheel With Cloud28 Sep 202101:04:47

You asked, and we deliver. Not that wouldn't have thought to do so of our own accord, but it just so happens all our interests and obsessions align with the release of Ariana Grande Cloud 2.0 Intense —  the more dramatic newborn sibling to our beloved Cloud.  In this episode,  we review the new fragrance (obviously), we break down the nuanced differences between the Intense and the original, we disagree about the word "boyfriend," and also Dolly Parton's fragrance (sorry), we reinvent the fragrance wheel by inserting "cloud" as a scent profile category. Yes, we have it on good olfactive authority that Cloud is a unique and recognizable enough accord that its name deserves respect and promotion. Also because everyone seems to be clocking Cloud as a dupe for this or a "this is the only perfume people compliment on me" that. It's time. We graciously took it upon ourselves to name several contenders that illustrate exactly what we mean.

48: The Perfume Most Likely To Be Seen In A Wes Anderson Film07 Sep 202101:16:21

In this episode: Tynan's cloud kingdom is fully assembled and he still insists that Kim Kardashian would come on this podcast. Sable recounts the trauma of draining water bulges in her apartment walls post-hurricane and complains about social media. Both of your hosts promise to stop co-opting the intros of these episodes to spiral about personal struggles and instead wax conspiratorial about toxic influencing. And then we talk to Sweden's newest hot boi of scent, Jan Vilhelm Ahlgren, and how he captures complex fantastical imaginings of parallel universes and figures in scent form for his very luxuriously anachronistic fragrance collection, Vilhelm Parfumerie.

47: Smell This Simulation31 Aug 202101:19:42

What happens when virtual reality co-ops scent for immersive experiences in intentionally manipulative ways to help people become more capable, more at peace, and better equipped to navigate real life? As a tech podcast, which we are now, we are investigating how the power of scent is used in virtual reality applications for good and for evil (maybe?). We have CEO Aaron Wisniewski of OVR Technology on to talk about how they're incorporating scent into virtual reality for all sorts of applications, such as but not limited to: healthcare, mental health, therapy, education, military, and civil service training.

45: Fenty Fumes, Gasoline Meatballs, & Toxic Girlfriend Tips10 Aug 202100:59:53

There have been some events happening in the world that can be smelled and then thought about: The Fenty ParFUM: What it smells like. What it's made of. What's the deal with that logo. Also, Rihanna's government name is Robyn?? (It is.)  Also, all these scented stunt products from IKEA and Ford. Plus, some very fascinating and confusing scientific discoveries in a bug's nose about how olfactory receptors work -- that while being very exciting, we are not entirely sure what it means? But we're trying. And that's what matters. Sort of.

44: Confessions From Behind The Fragrance Counter03 Aug 202101:14:29

We all remember navigating the mall through the huge beauty floors (because you always had to enter the mall through a department store for some reason) where your friendly fragrance sales associates would be demo-ing the latest,  pungiest (you know what I mean), designer-iest fragrances. Well, we have always wondered what it's like to have one of the most glamorous jobs at the mall: perfume girl. So we decided to talk to one former fragrance demo (and current illustrator and artist extraordinaire), Lauren Tamaki, who has over 10 years of behind-the-counter experience shilling scents to the world (well the part of the world that visited Canadian department stores). Selling fragrance is not unlike speed dating — you're getting to know someone's desires and aspirations and what makes them cringe or go weak in the knees — all in just one sense. It is also not unlike a well-heeled territorial game of survival of the spritziest, as Ms. Tamaki tells us from her time on the sales floor.

43: I Smell Sex And [Redacted]20 Jul 202101:06:08

The smell of love is not quite the same thing as the scent of lust. The latter is more... slutty for lack of a more polite word. But along all the lines of all things amorous and sessual, the scents we associate with attraction, sex, and love are often not quite the odors present in either context. And sometimes  they are.  So that's what we're talking about in this definitely not PG episode.

42: Scent Sells: How To Sniff Targeted Ads13 Jul 202101:15:11

So you thought targeted ads would stop at just your eyes and your ears? No, they're coming for your nose as well — in fact, they've been  there and you may or may not have even been aware of it. Some such companies like our guests for this episode, Air Aroma, are responsible for curating the olfactive vibes  in any kind of space, from hotel lobbies to fancy stores, homes of the rich and famous, car dealerships, cruise ships, airline lounges, and even medical offices. In this episode, we discuss scent marketing and just how effective an odor can be for experiential value, emotional manipulation (in a good way), as well as capitalist agendas.

40: The Many Layers of Kayali22 Jun 202101:09:27

If you've watched any beauty YouTube (or Instagram) in the past decade you're likely well aware of Huda Beauty. But the brand's co-founder Mona Kattan also has an extremely high-profile (perhaps the highest) side hustle with KAYALI, a very fancy fragrance brand. Perhaps you've heard about it from Tynan absolutely losing it over Sweet Diamond Pink Pepper in previous episodes, or more likely from Mona herself because she is much more influential than we, and also she runs the brand, obviously.

Well, lucky for us, Mona has a new scent that's perfect for now (summer) and also forever! Utopia Vanilla Coco 21 (which Sable will undoubtedly refer to as UVC21), is Kayali's seventh fragrance and the antidote to a year+ long lockdown. She talks about bringing the scent to life and how Kayali got its start from her passion for scent and perfume, the immersive culture of fragrance in Dubai, and what it's like running a few of the world's  most beloved beauty brands.

39: Some Of These Bitches Need The Aluminum15 Jun 202101:10:41

We are discussing Tynan's most loathed topic: deodorant. And in an attempt to talk about anything but this topic, he deftly veers the discussion around to: pimple-popping (videos and IRL), scabies, ballsacks, natural beauty's foibles, the clothes that make B.O. even worse, sunscreen (again), sexual handshakes, and of course the deodorants we actually like because they work. (You have to listen to the episode to learn those, you thought you could cheat just by looking at the episode notes, did you??)

If you're wondering whether natural deodorants are better than ones with aluminum, this New York Times article is helpful.

And if you want to learn more about Sable's stress sweat saga, she wrote about it on Allure.

38: Talking SPF: Summer Perfumes & Fragrances (& Sunscreen)08 Jun 202100:49:25

37: The Scent Of Toxic Masculinity25 May 202101:05:12

There are certain fragrances that carry connotations of the types of personalities who wear them loud and proud. And for those unfortunate few fragrances who did nothing wrong other than hang around the wrong crowd of certain men about town... they have come to be the  aromatic warning waft for the fuccboi™. For reasons unknown to all but the marketing teams behind their mass success, these certain fragrances are implicitly known by anyone with a beating heart as the scent of fuccbois. Your hosts discuss what these scents all have in common, how egregiously they have proliferated toxic masculinity, and our own traumatic experiences with these top offenders.

36: It Puts The Perfume On Its Skin18 May 202101:16:37

"Skin scents" are a newly trendy fragrance aesthetique that we can all thank/blame the people who brought you  'no-makeup makeup' and con culture. Just kidding (maybe)! We've had a vague idea of what skin scents are—transparent, musky, "natural"-smelling, non-perfume-y fragrances that mold to the wearer's skin chemistry—but not what's actually in the juice. So we took it up with the molecule master Geza Schöen, perfumer and founder of Escentric Molecules. The fragrance brand's debut fragrance isolated Iso E Super, the molecule that started it all. This lab creation is what gives skin scents that  je ne sais quoi responsible for the radiant, ethereal, intimate quality that skin scents have come to be known for. Schöen gives us a breakdown of this molecule as well as all of the molecules in the Escentric Molecule line, along with comprehensive insight into synthetic aroma molecules and their value to the fragrance industry.

Rosie Jane Johnston of By Rosie Jane joins us to help demystify how loosely the term is thrown around, yet has come to define the current era of makeup, skincare, and yes, fragrance. By Rosie Jane launched in 2010 as a "clean" fragrance brand, before the term became the rallying cry it is today. 34: The Aroma Of Our Addictions04 May 202101:11:11

Addictions are the hedonistic and sometimes dangerous expression of our indulgences, so it should be of little surprise that scents are a huge indicator, enabler,  and even keeper of our fondness for these experiences that may be toxic in nature—but definitely not in this fragrance concept. That's the sweet spot that Akro hits, a new perfume brand from Anaïs Cresp, Jack Miskelly, and Olivier Cresp, the nose behind the six fragrances in their initial offering (and behind  Angel, Light Blue, Nina Ricci Nina, Black Opium—so many hits!!).  We speak with father-daughter duo Olivier and Anaïs about Akro's olfactory spin on some familiar addictions, and how indulging them through scent can be a powerful experience all its own.

33: Why Are We Still Describing Fragrances As OriEnTaL?27 Apr 202100:48:53

You may have noticed how the co-hosts of this podcast audibly cringe every time we talk about a fragrance that is marketed as an "oriental" scent. It feels icky and wrong and way tone-deaf. Because it is. But why does the fragrance industry continue using such an outdated term in such a blasé matter-of-fact way? It's not like there aren't a ton of other more accurate descriptors that could be used to better explain a fragrance. It remains a mystery, however, one that more and more people are starting to rightfully question, ourselves included. While there isn't much discourse on this problematic topic, we reference this flare dot com article by Madelyn Chung for its in-depth research—a perfect springboard for your co-hosts to bounce off of and, as the kids say, go awf.

32: Don't Spray Your Dick20 Apr 202100:45:26

How do you apply fragrance? Well, that is a many-pronged question, pondered for many years and with varying degrees of authority on the matter.  Tl;dr: it depends. How far do you want your scent to emanate? How many enemies do you have? Why doesn't perfume ever last as long as you want it to, no matter how much you douse yourself?  (That we can help with.) Your hosts will answer these queries and many more things that no one and everyone asked us on the matter, imparting our fragrant knowledge on the most effective ways to smell like whatever it is you wish to smell like.

31: The Godfather of Smells06 Apr 202101:00:05

If you want to talk about fragrance, you have to talk to Luca Turin. So we did.  The biophysicist and writer wrote the book on fragrance—three actually—which were some of the first published guides to contemporary fragrance starting in the 1990s. He's since studied the science of how scent works with our sense of smell, still a grand mystery. Also a mystery: why masculine scents are so...the way that they are, what marks the difference between a scent and a fragrance, what makes some fragrances really bad and really good, and how far off we are to creating an electric nose.

30: Getting Sprung On Seasonal Scents30 Mar 202100:44:36

Are you team switch-up-your-fragrance-for-Spring or are you bad at sports? There are arguments for both and we have them here in this episode. Seasonal fragrances do the shelf shuffle twice a year, and now is one of those times. When the rising temps and hems mean more skin to spritz, some of us break out the Spring-y fragrances in favor of our whatever-seasons-come-before-Spring fragrances. What is a Spring fragrance, you ask? Well, allow us to tell you what our ideas of seasonal scents are and why we participate in their cyclical dance of sprays. Sprances.

29: Fragrance In Skincare Is Not The Enemy (Unless...)23 Mar 202100:59:19

So many people are alarmed at the presence of added fragrance and scent in their skincare products. But scent in skincare products is also there for the added experiential element of enjoyment.  Dermatologists and Skincare Youtube will ditch scent in skincare as any non-essential ingredient that can possibly lead to an allergic reaction would be, but there is a way to live your life and moisturize your face while having your very own little Calgon take me away moment. One skincare brand that's always featured scent in its products is Fresh (and they have actual fragrances as well). We spoke with Lev Glazmen, the brand's CEO, to learn about how Fresh incorporates scent into its products and how to safely enjoy fragrance with your skincare.

So we asked Steve Mormoris, CEO of Scent Beauty and former CMO at Coty Beauty, how and why famous folks like Cher, Dolly Parton, and Beyoncé create fragrances—and how Lady Gaga's Fame perfume was originally meant to smell like sperm and blood (and whose sperm it was based on).
